I'm getting a HTC Hero next week (Telus, waiting for it to be shipped) and I'm wondering what's a good screen protector to buy for it. I have an iPod Touch with a giant crack through the screen (still works) from dropping it so I want to have some protection this time around. Can screen protectors cause damage to the screen, if they're cheap ones or whatever? Do they impair the touch screen functionality at all? This is my first touch screen phone.

Screen protection is completely unnecessary. The screen is made of glass, and won't be scratched by normal use.
You can put any kind of protection on your screen, but it won't help anything if you drop your Hero in an unfortunate way.
Screen protection wouldn't have helped your iPod either...
besides from that this belongs in the accessoires section, and i believe there were some brands and models discussed already... i think you can find out which is the best, my vote goes for none. the screen won't scratch, and the surface feels way to good to be covered, and my hero has its own pocket in my jeans, and/or sits in a protective pouch.

i wish i could say this. my hero has a scratch right on the screen and its was only put in my pocket with nothing else. Also now i have dust under the left bottom side of the screen also. If your going to get a screen protector, i recommend Zagg Invisible Shield. When i had an iPhone 3G i got this put on and it was the best investment i made ( i got the whole body cover ) which i felt was much better than some case.

so your hero was scratched by the garment in your pocket?
in the end it is your decision. the dust argument is true, there is a lot of dust in the pocket, that is why is use a microfiber pouch.
I would buy a clear-coat, same as invisible shield but you get lifetime replacement all you have to do is pay the 3.99 shipping

Anyone know how tough the glass screen on the Hero is? I've been mollycoddling mine ever since I got it, but my brother just slings his iPhone in his pocket and it's never scratched.
My Touch Diamond screen ended up with countless tiny scratches after 6 months living in my pocket. :-(
Can confirm, concrete and the screen do not mix.
Get a screen protector
Hero's screen is made of "gorilla glass" same as the Iphones
I've been taking good care of mine too, only keeping it in an otherwise empty pocket. Somehow managed to get a tiny scratch tho.
Sorry for reviving the thread, but didn't want to start a new one. Can anyone confirm that the screen is indeed made of the same material as the iPhone per NisseGurra's post? (not doubting, just would rather ask and potentially find a source that confirms this )
I must say that the screen to me feels more plasticy than the iPhones ( I've held them side by side ).
I bought some protector screen off ebay, and so long as you put them on with care, they're very good.
Yeah I threw one on that came w/ a Flexishield case I purchased from eBay, but now I'm really starting to appreciate the anti-grease coating that was on the screen before I put the protector on. That's why I was wondering... if it truly is a scratch-resistant screen, I'd consider going protector-less for the sake of having a TON less smudging.
while it's pretty expensive, I suspect the HTC official screen protectors must have the anti-grease coating too - I certainly haven't noticed a difference in smudging level
in a small portion in the corner of my screen i thought i would test this out, even using a screw or blade with a fair bit of pressure it didnt scratch i think for normal usage ie keys in pocket you will stay scratch free.
I must admit, whatever they have coated the screen with seems to be far less scratch prone than other handsets I've had.
I do look after it TBH, but then I always do look after my handsets, hate scratched screens.
It does appear to be coated in a plastic and does not feel like glass. yet its cold to the touch just like glass would be, whereas plastic would feel 'warmer' to the touch.
In the most supreme irony, my screen has picked up a couple of small scratches. Lol. No clue where from either, it hasn't been dropped or mistreated.
Seems a screen protector is in order.

That's bizarre, especially considering your little corner-of-the-screen test!
There are some cheap screen protectors out there, which are made of too soft plastic so that they'll get scratches easily which doesn't look really good.
So, can you tell me your experience with your screen protectors on your HD2 - do you have allready small scratches in it or is it fully scratch resistant?
I don't use one with the HD2, but the best I ever used on formal phones was EXiM Spuc. They feel a little harder then other screen protectors and I used one on a SE P1 for about 6 months with the pointy stylus and I sold the phone with the protector still on, I even had to tell the new owner there was one on there..
I have a new brando screen protector for HD2 but haven't used it yet. I use the PO S511 case from htc, so most of the time its closed..
Usually the anti-glare ones (check the HD2 accessories forum..i got it from somewhere in there) are a bit more scratch resistant. They feel a bit "thicker" than the clear ones...though I'm sure they're about the same thickness.
I use the FX-Clear (Folix) bought at amazon.de - it´s great stuff
i dont have any protector and no scratches. Its glass... there is even a video with ppl trying to hurt it with a knife and it's still fine after... Waste of money imo. Also might impair functionality and looks.
Rather than get the screen scratched, as has happened to a few people on here (keys & change in the pocket with the phone!!!), I got some of these...
http://www.protectionfilms24.com/article/vikuiti-dqc-160-screen-protector-htc-hd2-28087.html
They're quite thick, but don't hinder screen sensitivity (I'd estimate the reduction in sensitivity around 5% - it's that minor). You can also wash them and reapply them (if you can get it off!)
I'm terrible at applying screen protectors. I always get stuff underneath them and end up going through a whole pack and not getting one perfect. With these things, however, the fact that I could just remove it and wash it was a godsend! It's easy enough to remove if you've only just put it on, and I've now got one that's on there that you can't see. It's perfect!
I couldn't recommend them enough mate. 3 for 2 at the minute as well, so well worth it.
Why would anyone want a screen protector for the HD2 when its glass and scratch proof??? wierd confused:

Because it's not scratch proof - it can get scratched...

definitely InvisibleSHIELD!
you pay premium quality, but you really get scratchproof device. you can scratch the foil with keys and you won't find any marks. using these foils on my iPods for 4 years and they still look like brand new! you can choose between screen only, or a full body cover.
also, the foil has a lifetime warranty!

shouldn't this thread be in Leo accessories?
I grabbed this stuff: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370310732216
before the minor scratch I'd already made was joined by any more...
they can be a real pain to get properly aligned but they easily remove,if required, and can be stuck back on again just as easily..it's just like applying transfers to airfix models when you were a kid.
any one with recommendation on screen protector
I'm currently using a Zagg max coverage protector that I had installed at Best Buy, and have no complaints so far. The only thing I've noticed with it is that my finger tends to get stuck when using Swype, but not often enough for it to bother me.
I don't have this phone but I don't think you need a screen protector. I haven't seen any videos on the screen durability test like they do for the iphone scratch test. But I think the screen should be sturdy enough. The screen won't be as smooth to scroll with a plastic layer. And if you accidentally get even a drop of water in the corners of the phone with the squeegee, you are screwed. Good luck.
Using an Invisible Shield on mine. This is the only phone I've ever used one on. I figured with a screen this huge I want to keep it looking nice.
You don't need you it is glass like the Iphone and hero. I have seen test's on both using key to try and scratch nothing happened. Anything that would damage the screen (scratch it) would go right through the screen protector and still damage it. As it would take a lot of force to scratch. Just a wast of money not to mention it hampers the touch screens ability to pick up your finger.
someone apparently water damaged their evo with putting on a protector. Careful. I would cover up the indicator on mine once I get it.
i have a zagg on mine and hate it. its sticky and has a "orange peel" like appearence. i ordered a hard plastic one on amazon and am waiting for it to come in the mail.
I also feel that a screen protector is unecessary...glass is very hard to scratch, and can only be scratched by something harder than it is.
Zaag one here and I think it's too sticky. It messes with my swiping. Catches my finger too much.

I used the same logic with my hero and ended up getting a few scratches just from unforseen sh!t happening. this screen is too beautiful for me to risk.
also whoever water damaged their phone while putting on a screen protector is an idiot.
I put one on for peace of mind and it works just as it did without the protector.
However, if it's like the iPhone screen, then you shouldn't need one at all. I had the same iPhone since the release date and had zero scratches as of Friday... it's last day in service!
We pre-ordered out Evo's at RS so we used out accessory credits for Zaggs and car chargers and I put them on. They do have an orange peel like look when looking at them at a angle with the screen off and reflecting off some light. But with the screen on and looking at them there is no issue with the display. They were not hard to put on either.
I'm using the "anti-glare" protector that comes in the 3-pack you get at the Sprint store for $12 (the other two are "clear"). I love it - it doesn't interfere with my user experience at all. Why on earth would you risk scratching your screen? To save $4 and 5 mins time?
Boxwave Crystal Clear screen protectors. I have a 3-pack on order (I have 2 Evo's between me and my girlfriend). We're using them "naked" so far until they arrive.
I highly recomend the Boxwave protector though, I have used them for about 6+ years on various PDA/Smartphones. I even have one for my P&S Camera.
Here is my experience:
Zagg:
Good -
Works well as protection
Hides fringer prints decently
Bad -
Blurs your screen a very small amount
Makes the surface feel like rubber
Hard to put on without getting a little dust under it
Generic hard plastic sheet:
Good -
Works well as protection
Feels very smooth, smoother than glass
Easy to put on, and normally you get 2 or 3 in case you make a mistake
Perfectly clear
Bad -
Finger print magnet, oil really builds up
You can see where the protector ends around the edges
Added glare in sunlight(small amount)
Unprotected Glass:
Good -
Feels very smooth
Easy to clean off, just rub it off on your shirt
Perfectly clear
Bad -
Medium finger print problem, but easy to clean
I feel scared to place it face down, once I get a case that recesses the face I will feel better.
Over all I decided to go with unprotected. Its the middle of the road and I feel the best over all experience.
Zagg Invisible Shield is NO GOOD.. Its almost sticky. Don't get it! I warned ya.

Agreed, the Zagg is sticky. But I deal with it so that I can protect it. I don't have a huge issue with viewing it or the orange peel look when it's off because you don't notice it when it's on. The fit is nice. On my hero, I had a really clear smooth one from ebay which was great, but was all scratched up. The zagg shouldn't even mark up which is why i'm dealing with it. Sticky, but not to the point that it pisses me off. I put it on myself relatively easily, just spray lots of that solution on it, no bubbles, no dust, 2 minute application.
Maybe the Zagg is sticky if you put it on backwards but I have ZERO complaints about mine.
I ordered a 3 pack of anti-glare/anti-fingerprint screen covers from handhelditems for 7.99 (for the 3pack). They have crazy deals on evo 4g accessories right now. I also got a car charger for like 3.99.
I bought it more for the anti-glare/anti-fingerprints than the actual screen protection.
Warning!
There is a whole thread started on water damage and most of this comes from any screen protector that requires you to spray on water... ei Zaggs
When you squeegiie the water off the screen it leaks in to the back of the phone and Sprint has been sneaky about placing water damage indicator right on the tip of the phone.. below battery.
Either cover the indicator with protector or stick to the regular screen covers..
Anyone know how durable the glass is on the Aria's screen? It's nice and shiny, and I'd like to keep it that way (but also avoid a screen protector if possible). Has any seen any videos of durability testing on the screen, or been daring enough to test it themselves?
i would use a screen protector. try the invisibleshield. i always use it. i hate making my phone bulkier then it is. invisible shield does the job and once it gets dull and old, have them replace it and WALA new case again.

I've been wondering about this, once you put Invisible Shield on the phone, can you still open it to replace battery/sim/sd card?
I dropped mine on concrete (first drop) and cracked the top right corner. But thats to be expected with any phone with a glass screen.
The only good thing I can say is it didnt spider web like I see on all kinds of iphones
I am kicking myself because I dropped my phone the first weekend I had it and it slid face down on concrete (so mad because my invisible shield had not come in yet). It put a nice little scratch in the screen, very noticeable. My advice is to get something protecting the screen quickly, my drop was from on my lap while seated and that scratched it, I couldn't imagine a larger drop.
Sent from my HTC Liberty using XDA App
Well i had a screen protector in my hd2 since first day, but i read some and found that it is scratchness, so i took off the screen protector and the difference is big o.o the colors and brightness of the screen are so beautiful compared with screen protector (L)
so can someone confirm me that is it truly anti-scratches? or it is just false?
i have a nice scratch down my screen lol

mines from trying to prove you cant scratch it LOL........
It's highly resistant to scratches. I don't have a single scratch, no protector, and have had the phone since they came out in the US.
Of course, being glass, it still possible to scratch if you try hard enough.
i used the pouch that came with it for abotu a month and a half but then i didnt bother, ive had the phone since nov09 and dont have any scratches on the screen
i use no other than "brando ultra clear" since my early days with my palm V
screen protection is highly resistable and after 2 Years of usage with stylus no scratches. On my HD2 no difference with or without screen protector.
Udo
I'd recommend some kind of pouch when you put it somewhere together with other stuffs, especiually keys etc. If its solo in your pocket its safe.
just keep the screen pointing to your leg in case someone hits you with something. <-happened to me
i have my hd2 from nov 2009...i use the leather pouch it came in with...clean as new....but then i take care of it real good....it can get scratched if it comes in contact with a material which has a higher moh (measure of hardness) ...so get the leather pouch for hd2...it wont add bulk to your phone and provides the best cover for the screen
I got the Otterbox for the HD2 and its amazing. When I take the phone out of it to remove the battery or sd card the phone still looks BRAND new. They cost only a little more than some screen protectors do. I got mine on Amazon for around $30
2 years with my dear and not a single scratch, and i don't use the leather pouch, only a silicon case to protect the back.
Hi, screen protector save my phone when i accidentally drop my hd2 from meter and half. Screen clash on sharp stone on ground, protector to destroy, but display survive with only little scratch. So, im using screen protector. Obviously do not use cheap screen protector.
