Application auto updates don't work - anyone know why? - Touch HD General

Getting a bit tired of this now so I'm tempted to try doing something about it, but I'm not sure what.
Non of the auto updates on my phone appear to work correctly and every time I want new data I have to manually tell each program to refresh/update etc. The manual procedures work no problem.
It's really annoying and wastes time having to do that when you should be able to open an app and have everything up to date.
Examples of what I mean are RSS feeds, Weather programs etc. . It puts me off using certain apps.
Is there any common reason for things that might cause this? I'm using an "Energy rom WWE" and am wondering if this might be rom related, although I have a vague recollection that this was also the case on the standard rom as I can remember having to manually update TF3 weather every time I used it, despite setting it to auto.
The phone always has a good GPRS/EDGE connection (my provider has no 3G ), although what I noticed a while ago was that my data connection would sometimes not work so I now have a scheduled automatic reboot every night.
I don't think the problem is related and I've not had connection problems since then, but regardless of this the auto updates never seem to work.
I'd LOVE all this stuff to be updating automatically as it is all set to do, but no idea why it doesn't do this.
Any ideas? Thanks!
Jim

Jim...1)does your data connection stay active in standby? Also 2) Check this registry setting HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCMSgEnhancement\Overlay Transition and see if the dword is 0 or 1. If 0 change to 1. It's a long shot that may not make much sense, but worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestion Sean - will check it out.
What exactly is that registry setting for?
And silly question maybe - but how can I tell if it's keeping the connection active if it's in standby?

Hmmm, been in the registry and I'm uncertain about this.
I don't actually seem to have this registry path:
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCMSgEnhancement\Overlay Transition
Instead it has:
HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCMSgEnhance\
And none of the folders inside it seem to correspond with the overlay transition setting.
On the other hand there is a folder for:
HKLM\Software\HTC\Overlay Transition
This has three REG_DWORD settings (Interval/TotalFrame/WaitTime), and a default that has not been set to anything.
Hope that makes sense?

The registry setting is actually what controls how email fades in and out when you're swiping left or right between emails. Some chefs turn the overlay off which turns the fade transition off and makes swiping between emails almost instant. I use to turn it off, but each time I messed with that reg setting, my data connection would freeze up after or during an auto update. The only way to fix it was a softreset. When I would turn the transition back on, the problem would go away. Why? Not sure. That's why I said checking that reg may make zero sense, but it might be a factor.
To check if your data stays on in standby: establish a data connection and put your phone in standby (screenoff). After a bit, turn the screen back on and see if you still have a small "E" over the signal bars. You can also check the notification manager by pressing the top bar. See if a timer is going and how many hours, minutes and seconds it's been going. Or, and this may be better for testing purposes, go into sounds and notifications, set a sound for data connection established and a sound for data disconnected. Then start a data connection and you should hear the connected sound. Then put the phone in standby you will either hear the data disonnect sound or nothing at all. If you hear nothing at all, then your data is staying alive in stanby.
Edit: oops I didn't see your post above this one. See my response below.

Which Energy Rom version are you using? The second reg settting is what controls the speed of the fade in and out email transition. If you don't have the other setting then my second suggestion is not the problem. So see if your data stays active in stanby. If it disconnects then that would certainly be one good explanation for your apps not updating.

Thanks for such an informative reply - very helpful.
Yes, checked the data connection and it still shows edge there (ove 8 hours worth) so I guess that's not the issue.
The odd thing was that after posting this thread my RSS feeds actually did auto update today! BUT, my weather apps haven't, so it's a fluke I think.
Rom name is Energy ROM WWE 29/07/2009, Protocol 52.64.25.34U, Radio 1.14.25.24

SMS and new rom 4.00.5

I have noticed now that when I recieve a SMS message that I get the notification sound but no longer does the unit turn on and display the message like it used to. If I turn the screen on it displays the message like normal but it doesn't automagically turn the screen on. Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing that changed that functionality or is that normal now?
It is normal now, I prefer the new way
Yep its normal like that and i should agree with Master Zviratko that the new way is better...

Its a side effect of a feature/bug in 2003. Lots of applications where hit by it.
You will find that if your device is connected to AC power it will function the way it used too.
With 2003, when on battery power, it no longer just turns off the display it doesn't process applcations in the background anymore to get more battery life.
Anyhow, on a notification you get a brief spurt of processing time, then it goes away, so with 2003 applications first of all your code has to turn on the display again, bringing the device back to life.
Other apps that play sounds on notifications may not even play the full sound, depending on the length of the sound.

When you think about this, you'll maybe see this is really the right thing to do. For instance, imagine you're running an IRC client. You would want it to receive the IRC data as it comes in, doing precisely this: keep the screen off, do a brief spurt of processing, just enough to see what's going on and maybe alert the user, and then go to sleep again.
Any other way would drain the batteries really quickly, this has a chance of keeping people online in a meaningful way all day.
it still works the same way as it did, when i put a file to download and execute the ByteCounter.exe, i hear the beeps as the data flow. However, sometimes it just drops the connection.
Btw, I suspect that the Always on GPRS feature to keep the device connected during a call is just a fake! The device disconnects when making a call and then reconnnects - IP changes.

Hello,
you wrote that the device isn't switch on, when a new short message comes in. That is a problem of the Radio Stack Version. I have the PPC 2003 version 4.0.01 and Radio Stack 4.21. And I have the same feature/bug. I told to microsoft about this and they told me, that there is a new radio stack in test. This new radio stack will fix that.

Damn phone keeps turning itself on

Upgraded to the new 1.60 ROM hoping to cure this annoying problem but if anything its worse.
I turn the phone off and within 5 minutes its turned itself back on for no apparent reason. No notifications or anything. Cant be doing my battery life any good if it keeps switching on
Any ideas?
That may be something to do with the way that ActiveSync is set up.
I've had this kind of problem in the past and found that by killing activesync by using a task manager of some variety and changing my 'network' settings that the problem goes away
Please excuse me, im quite a newbie at this xda malarky. My xda also turns its self on randomly since installing 2003. you said change your network settings. How and what do you change them to? I made sure that activsync is turned off, but it doesnt make much difference either way.
cheers
I have experienced the same...
And, I've been on multiple ROM's with no avail.
I'm not sure anyone has ever found a solution.
My activesync is turned off, but the damned thing keeps turning on. Its sitting in the cradle at present and it turns on every 3-4 minutes!!!
It is Active Sync
I had this problem with my charger in the car. It is not sufficient to kill the Activesync. You would have to go to the options in the Activesyn menu, go to the new options button in the PC tab (the first one) and there disable the box with the name "Enable PC sync using this connection". This you will have to enable each time you want to sync via the cradle. I don't have the problem in the original cradle, it is only with the thirdparty car charger. I sync via IR or bluetooth and that is always available via the menu in Active Sync.
Good luck!
Johan
ActiveSync i can understand when its in the cradle but currently its sitting on my desk and still turning on at random intervals sometimes 30 secs after i switch it off!!!
Signal strength maybe?
I have same problem, happens mostly in car but not exclusively.
I get the feeling that it's related to the cellular signal strength and the device loosing or regaining the GSM connection.
San Francisco has several zero or almost zero coverage areas so it's not unusual for a phone to loose and then regain a connection while driving or walking.
I would love this device if it worked as expected but at this moment it is the source of endless frustration.
im also having these problems they are head doing never used to turn itself on as soon as i hard reset it just started to do this now and its annoying me so much
Im also having these problems . I find a solution using registry cleaner of pocket mechanic.
Bye
Guys, Check the setting of the ActivSync, most probably you will find a schedule for synchronization is set every certain time. So, you have to switch it to Manual Sync.
I think this should soulve your problem.
Sprite Backup
I too had this problem. For some reason the enabling Sprite Backup battery monitoring and Scheduled Backups caused this. try turning these features off if you have it installed.
I have same problem, its really anoying, have not found a way to stop auto connection even after changing some setting on my computer Activesync & XDAii activesync. I'm guessing theres no way to stop it.
Is there an active sync update available? I'm using 3.7 (build 3083)
For those whose unit turns on by itself, please check:
From your PPC:
Start > ActiveSync > Tools> Options > Mobile Schedule
Make sure all 3 options are set to "Manually".
From your Desktop PC ActiveSync:
Tools > Options > Schedule
Make sure every active options are set to "Manually" as well.
You can manually sync but Activesync still keeps "looking for changes"
I need for help plsssss
if some body plsssss attch the last eddition of xda2nbftools because I am living in Saudi Arabia, and the web site to can download this file is BLOCKED here in Saudi Arabia, they are blocking web sites here then u can't open it at all and no way to can download it unless if it attached here in this forum
Here is it:
Same for me too,
Mine can turn itself on almost as soon as i turn it off, its a running battle to get it to turn off and i very rarely win, I have accepted the fact that mine will stay on most of the time now and have a second battery to help me through the day,
I checked all my settings and all mobile schedule settings were on manual and all the active options are set to manual too, so it wasnt those settings causing the problem,
I cant believe the lack of support that O2 are providing, if this was an HP handheld there would have been a fix for each problem as it cropped up within a week as they have done with each of their handhelds
do the people experiancing turn ons have a card in the Sd slot? i do but i notice when the device is off...... put a sd card in and the device turns itself on i only started to notice it turning on when i got my SD card i might take it out tonight and try then?
Yup, i have a card in the slot all the time, took it out for a few hours this morning and it was no different, still kept turning itself on,
I looked a bit deeper into it this morning too,
It seems that i use it, turn it off and it turns back on 13 seconds later, i turn it off again and it turns itself back on again 13 seconds later, so i try to turn it off and the power button has no effect, i have to press it twice to turn it off, then it seems to stay off for at least 30 minutes before going through the exact same sequence again,
I will list all my installed programs a bit later when i have more time, hopefully everone else can do the same (whether you have the problem or not) then we can see if there's a common program that is on all the XDA2's that might be making them turn on and see if its absent from the XDA2's that are fine

Data Connection stays on

So, I find that when I use a browser or any other data connection software, the data connection stays on after exiting the browser or other data use software. This tends to run my battery down extra fast if I forget to go into the Comm Manager and turn off the data connection manually. Or I'm in a situation where I can't take the extra time.
Question 1: what are other people doing about this?
Question 2: Is there a something like the WiFi switch programs (I'm using AKToggleWiFi) which make turning the data connection on or off something that can be done with a button or shortcut on the today screen?
On Question 2, the main thing I don't like about the Comm Manager are the number of steps involved, and when I turn on the Comm Manager, it takes a few seconds for it to realize that the data connection is on, before I can turn it off.
Thanks in advance

Try this:
To disconnect network when idle for 1 min
HKLM\Comm\CommMgr\Planner\Settings\
Delete the following key: "SuspendResume"
add "CacheTime" value of 60
This should disable the connection if its idle for 1 min
hope i helped!!!!
Thank you! That works!. I set it for 30 seconds (BTW, had to use DWord, not string). I didn't delete the old Key, just set it to zero. I may need it for times when I'm doing a chat or something that I can't have it log off during...experimentation to follow.
Why doesn't it come with an option to turn off the data connection instead of burning through the battery after a certain wait period?

To be honest I gave up on trying to understand Microsoft's reasoning, there is a number of performance issues that could be resolved easily that they choose not to fix.. They are special like that .. I thought about trying just disabling registry instead of deleting it, Glad that worked for you.
The difference in power use is profound. I think data connection wasn't just happening when I used it, but would go on by itself and stay that way. This is the first time I've seen this much power left in the battery after a whole day. It's still reading 100%, even though I've used the phone a couple of times. In 5 months, that has never happened.
I wish my wife's LG Touch was as open to problem solving as my WinMo phone. I'm pretty sure her phone has a similar problem draining down the battery.
new imagio issues...
Hello,
I am very glad to be returning to a winmo phone, after having been forced to use blackberry for a while. I have used many windows phones in the past, so am sort of familiar with rom flashing and registry edits.
Just got an HTC imagio, and am using it with corporate exchange server, connected through VPN. I have a couple issues that I am hoping someone can help with. When my VPN is enabled, I go through the entire battery in less than 6 hours. When it is disabled, battery lasts for about 2 days. Any ideas about how to make the battery last longer w/ VPN enabled? Would the approach described about disconnecting network when idle help with this?
In any case, I would like to try. Would someone mind please directing me to a registry editor that works on imagio? thanks, and I'd very much appreciate any other ideas!
EDIT:
OMFG...this works PERFECTLY!!! MY BATTERY IS LASTING WAY WAY LONGER, AND I'M STAYING CONNECTED TO VPN!!!
sorry for yelling...I am just so freakin' happy. This forum is great!

Everyone with Battery problem post info here fix soon

Ok, although I do not have a solution it seems that their are a small percentage of people on here that have the same problem as me.
This is what I know:
The EVO has a bigger display, a faster proccessor, 4G, and alot of advanced features this means battery is not going to be the greatest.
However, I am now rooted running CM6 RC2, and although I love this ROM I have been having terrible battery. Also, I was using Fresh's and stock unrooted ROM and had bad battery also, AFTER I PUT IN ALL MY SETTINGS.
When I would hard reset my phone, it would sleep like normal, and the battery would run great, however, I think their is a setting that I use with my phone that is keeping it awake.
Now I am going to give all the settings that I use on my phone without installing any apps from the market. Because I know some apps keep your phone awake but I did a factory reset, put in my settings without installing any apps and my phone stayed awake.
***I have already tried the HTC and Sprint method of "conditioning your battery" I know their are 2 methods I have done both. I have setCPU, juice defender, spare parts, all that stuff that supposedly saves battery, but so far none have helped. Also my phone is set to auto CDMA, i tried that*****
Here is what I think. I am changing some setting in the phone that is keeping it awake and I can't seem to find what it is, I had this same problem with google sync setting and thankfully someone helped me fix it and it solved the problem however, after that I am still having the issue.
Keep in mind I HAVE NOT INSTALLED ANYTHING FROM THE MARKET YET, I have only entered my settings in apps that came with the phone because I believe that is the culprit.

Facebook-sync if off, I have not synced contacts with Facebook, and the problem I had last time was with google sync, I had google sync turned off and that kept my phone on. Now I have facebook sync turned off, COULD THAT BE THE PROBLEM?

If anything looks not right, or you think something as little as it may be may be causing the problem, even if it doesn't make sense please suggest it, I have tried everything, thanks.
Not to burst your bubble, but it's been pretty much proven that CM6 has unsatisfactory battery life.
Try Burnt Droid v1 + netarchy-toastmod kernel for optimum battery life.
I know,
but after reading through the thread it seems that about half of them half pretty good battery life, however I had poor battery with other roms, because something was keeping my phone awake.
I'm having a similar problem. On any ROM that's based of HTC's 2.2, my phone will run fine for about a day and then it will begin to stop sleeping. Once that happens the only way to get it to stop is to do a factory reset. What's funny is that using the exact same settings with CM6-RC2 I don't get the 100% awake issue. I've tried everything and can't figure it out.
I've tried turning off all automatic syncing, turning off network time and network location...didn't work. I deleted my Exchange account since I had heard that some people were having Exchange problems...didn't help. This last time around I didn't install anything from the market, it was just the stock apps. I did connect the phone to Sync in my truck and used it quite a bit before the problem cropped up.
I've got a sneaking suspicion that it's some kind background process that tries to run after a specified amount of time, but there's some kind of problem with the Sense-based ROMs that I've tried that won't allow it to run properly. So we need to figure out what the process is and either stop it from running in the first place, or figure out a way to take it out of the ROM so it isn't there to begin with.
I'm going to wipe everything and try installing Fresh 3.1.0.2 again. I'm going to try to remember to reboot my phone every night when I plug it in to charge and see if that helps. While it isn't ideal, it's way easier than having to do a factory reset every other day. I'll post back and let everyone know what happens.

CM10 Battery Drain and Feature Request

Hi there,
I installed CM10 (thanks a lot for it by the way) this morning and it seems my display sometimes just activates without reason. At first I only noticed the device being extremely warm, so I check battery usage and 92% of it have been "display". The device went from 95% to about 50% in a matter of a two or three hours with me not using the tablet at all in that time. When I checked again a little later, the display was active, although I am sure I had sent the device to sleep mode.
Also, here are two features I would like to request:
1. Please add a way to rotate the lockscreen
2. Please add Mobile Data as a switch for the quick settings (the one you get to by "clicking" the clock). It is rather annoying to go through the menu to activate / deactivate it...

OK, found the fix for that problem... the other one still stands
And I have got an additional issue now:
my Mobile Data Connection doesn't work. My carrier is o2 Germany and the stock ROM had some issues with that carrier as well a while back. Maybe it is the same problem?
For now I am switching back to stock, without mobile data, the tablet is only half as usefull, even with the otherwise better ROM
Add your APN Setting manually and it works nice. They are in the 3G Settings. I even had to just add a almost empty one to make things wake up again.

I have actually experienced the opposite--battery has been outstanding since flashing the ROM. I usually turn on Airplane mode when I am not using the phone, and am certain to turn off WiFi as well. Try that and see if it makes a difference. Also, be sure you are charging with an appropriate charger!

Thanks, that solved the 3G issue and, as far as I can tell after one day, the issue with the screen activating, as well.
For the other point, being able to activate / deactivate the mobile data easily, I found Power Toggle (can't post link, just look for it in the play market or remove the blanks: ht tps://play.google. com/store/apps/details?id=com.painless.pc) which can add a widget to the notification area that works great
You can add more switches to the menu popping up when clicking on the clock. Thats what I did. Its in System -> Notification Bar (Or something like that, I use it in German ^^)
