Hi, first post on here....
I'm playing with a Orange SPV M5000 (HTC Universal), and I can't find a permanent storage area on it, is that right?
I've also got a O2 XDAII & a XDAIIs and these both have a Storage folder (permanent) and a Storage Card (if inserted)
Does the HTC Universal not have this, or is it just the SPV M5000s?
Thanks
All the storage in WM5 is permanent unlike WM2003SE
thanks for the replay, but that's not true
I just copied a few image files to \My Documents, cold-reset the device, and the files were gone.
Unless anyone can say otherwise, I don't think this device has any permanent storage othere than the external card
Jon, hard resets are designed to wipe the device.
soft reset - it, just jabbiing the reset hole, preserves data fine.
go easy on the hard resets! you *will* lose data, that's the point of it.
ady, dave, thanks, and I was wrong, you are right!
I'm a developer, and working out how to stop users from zapping my app when they let the battery run down, and trying out install scripts, which is why I'm hard-resetting devices, etc
on ppc2003, if the battery died, the device is factory-reset, I did not know that wm5.0 worked differntly, this makes things much easier, thanks guys

Sorry, i only just woke up.
As far as I can discern, the extended rom is really just a hidden folder, that you are prevented from writing to. You can change a flag on the disk with some software on this site, and on some devices even resize it, but generally, it can be used as storage, or not. it's pretty hidden, obscured and not very friendly, so i guess only the extremists will use it.
saying that, it's a nice place to store copies of ms bvoice command so you can reinstall it again when it screws up again without using 'real' storage space on your device (you listening, microsoft? )

lol I need to wear an eye patch now
Installing to \root\Program Files\DylonSoft should be fine on the Uni and most other WM5 devices. Some devices might not use Persistent Storage, the OEMs have the choice to use RAM but it is discouraged. I haven't read of any devices that have chosen the old method yet.
Persistent Storage is just a built in flash chip.
When you do a soft reset the OS is loaded into the (uselessly small) RAM space from the ROM. Just like your PC, killing the power only kills whatever is running and of course any unsaved work.
I've gotta say this is a very helpful forum!
I've got this sussed now, as I said, I'm a developer, so I want an install which will work on most devices, so I'm not going to mess about with extended ROM, as I'll then have to spend ages messing about to do the same thing on a different device.
Anyone wants help building installers for pocketPCs, give me a call
Thanks

yes and no....the yes part first....if you use your storage card and phone like a portable drive then you can store all the apps you have room for....wm5trorage is great to use in this way....also certain flash apps will run...( i dont know which ones ...google is your friend here) ....on the no side...I haven't heard of or come across any knowledge of any app working directly from within the mobile environment....not one that was not altered to do so in some way .....my two pennies....hope they help

two pennies is better than nothing
forgot to mention I know that it's possible from the storage card vantage because for a short while I ran opera portable from my phone that way ....so when I was at work I could use my own browser and minimize my footprint and control my information....worked like a charm...I wonder if it's possible to perhaps put a U3 type program on the phone where one could do more and have it boot on connect........that would be a nice app.... in theory you can put the suite they offer for free at http://portableapps.com haven't tried that but it should work
Many custom ROM's don't have CoPilot intstalled. Make sure you make a backup of the CoPilot software on your old ROM before updating. After you've updated you can restore the software on your new ROM.
The CoPilot application can be backed up with the CoPilot desktop software, called CoPilot Central (2.0). Download it here.
Additional tip:
Make a backup of CoPilot with CoPilot central, then go (on your Windows 7 or Vista desktop) to:
[drive]:\Users\[your login]\AppData\Roaming\ALK Technologies\CoPilot Central 2.0\CentralData\Backup\Program Files\

and copy the CoPilot directory to your MicroSD card.
Unfortunately the activation key isn't stored during the backup process, but the CoPilot live login is, so it saves you some typing on the abc keyboard during the reactivation of the software.
If someone has found out how to store the activation key, please let me know.
Nice tip, thanks!

In the meantime there are cabs available to install CoPilot again on the HD2. But I am always stressed out about the CoPilot activation.

wow, I can see you get stressed about it You found a thread that is really old.
Back then, my son, times were much tougher then for you youngsters nowadays. We had to copy things around to get things going. Nowadays, you have little cabs and all that.. what a luxury!
But don't stress out. Never stress out. Just say ohhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm and backup the file licp8.dat that you will find in your windows directory.
In german I would say, its just "nervig" but in cause of the fact that we've to write in english here I have used online translation and picked up "stressed out". Maybe it was a to hard word for my small problem.

I was just kidding. I agree, it is a annoying problem. But the trick works. It saved me from a heart attack.
Then I'll increase the difficult level:
Will I have to install CoPilot before restoring this file or will it then be overwritten?

I'm also interested in this. I've not got a custom ROM on mine, but have been tempted, so i asked CoPilot support about it. Don't hold your breath on me getting a reply though, as it took 2 weeks for them to get back to me with my last question!
Hopefully, someone on here will be able to point us at a trial download, cos I can't find one anywhere!

How about flashing a stock rom, copying the copilot folder (and other relevant files?) to sd card and then go back to the custom roms...

That's not a guaranteed method. There are most likely files in unexpected locations and registry entries that you wouldn't immediately find. It's worth trying though, but I wouldn't expect it to work completely.
Co Pilot make a great product, in my opinion; however their support, or should I say their speed in reacting to customer queries, leaves a lot to be desired.
I am waiting for a response from them to a query I logged over 2 weeks ago (granted we have had Xmas in between) but I'm not expecting to hear from them until mid January at the earliest.

when I first purchased it I got a download link for a cab and the maps in an email from ALK.
Don't you have that?
Not going to share the cab as it appears to already have my reg number inside it (or at least it's already filled in).
as a secondary route you can back up and restore the programfiles for copilot.
Use Copilot central on your PC on a stock rom to back up, and it will restore fine on your new one..
I've tried this a few times now.

No - it was installed on the device when I got it and I've never had a download link. There was also a bit of literature in the box about CoPilot, and that said that it was pre-installed.

Nice one - I'll give that a go later and see if it works. If it does, then that's the answer.
Cheers fards.
Hi I have an issue with Copilot 8 and havent managed to find a thread in here that mentions the issue I have.
I have the following versions
OS 5.2.21869
Manilla 2.5.19211619.0
ROM 1.48.405.2 WWE
Radio 2.05.51.05_2
I replaced the original 2GB SD card with an 8GB, and used the 2gb card in my daughters Nintendo DS, blatting everything on it.
Now I fancy trying Copilot, and whilst I can run the app, I cannot download any maps as it thinks I am in Africa (or only have permission to download those maps).
This is the same for Copilot Central and on the device, if i try to download anything else it just says "Error downloading files", for the African one it gives me a second screen asking me to confirm.
Am I missing something here? Or is it because I deleted the "trial" version maps on my SD card?
I have 15 days left on the trial to fix this :-S
Hope someone has had the same issue??

You need to get in touch with CoPilot support for help with this. They're a bit slow I'm afraid, so don't hold your breath.

Agreed. However I bought CP7 early last year (I think) and it cost me nearly £60! I wrote to them recently asking if I could transfer my licence across rather than pay £26 for a new package when CP7 is perfecly adequate and they refused.
Fair do's I suppose, as they have got to make some money somewhere but disappointed nevertheless. The "get in lane" improvements in CP8 are worth it as I use this system in my car. However seeing that I have not yet had the full benefit out of the package I paid for last year I can't justify the extra expense and then have a whole package lying around doing nothing.
Shame.
WB
I think they are getting confused somewhere!
There is absolutely nothing to prevent you cancelling the license on one device then reactivating it on another one. The only thing they won't do, and this maybe where the confusion arose, is to transfer a license between platforms (WM -> Apple/Andoid and vice versa)
If you still have CPL on the original device, you can go into the Licensing screen and select to deactivate it. This needs an internet connection. Once deactivated, install the program on the new device and go through the online activation. If that doesn't work, complain again to ALK. There is no compulsion to upgrade to relicense the program.
Had the same issue with my trial. CoPilot sent me this link and it says just to copy the copilot folder to the memory card.

That's the maps - not the application. We're looking for an installer for the app.
Worth keeping a note of this though - thanks
That's funny. My CoPilot Central 2.0 thinks I'm in Africa, too. When I used the KML-export function of my GPS-Tracks, that I had no use for, the only coordinates the KML-file contained were two hundred miles off the coast of Ghana in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Thats the link that got mine working, I still had the ROM version loaded on my HD2.
Now I can see what the product is like, the screenshots look pretty nice. Ive got an inbuilt satnav in the car, but for £26 I'd be tempted to get this as a walking aid.

Same here, I have factory fitted satnav in the car but I got co-pilot after the trial ended, as you say if you just use it as a walking aid, you can't go wrong for £26.

Neil,
Thanks for the heads up. To be honest ALK make a great product but their Customer Service is diabolical. Rather than spend hours exchanging increasingly meaningless messages with them in that fixed format template format they are so fond of using which is so irritating and tells you absolutely nothing, I simply ditched all the CP8 folders on my device (bar the rom files which I can't move) and installed my paid for CP7.
Saves a whole load of hassle, from my perspective, and it works just fine.

Long shot but if you are trying to access CP Central from a PC, why don't you set-up a proxy server or use some other method to "hide" your IP address which might help solve the problem?
I have never done this for this purpose so it's unusual for me to recommend an action I have not tried myself; however if no one else has a better answer and you can't get CP Support to help then might be worth a go?

Don't bother with the Copilot support "contact form". It's totally useless, and they'll probably never reply. Instead send a "tweet" to http://twitter.com/copilotsupport/ or http://twitter.com/copilotlive/. That usually gets an answer within 24 hours.
