So i've had my HD2 since release, and just recently i've noticed background noise during phone calls.
This is most evident when im in a quiet place, or there is no one speaking, and the volume is on max.
The sound sounds like a 'ksssh' and phases in and out, and is not always constant. But its definately there.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Yes I also hear this.. sometimes I even hear popping or crackeling of the speaker when the volume is 50%!
It's really anoying and I'm considering to return my device for a replacement. I did not have this experience on my Touch HD, there it was crystal clear!

I also experience some crackling at low volumes, but I guess (and hope) is's just a firmware issue which can be dealt with. also when waking up (sms for example) the alert tone cracks some times. But when I'm listening to music via the internal speaker at loud volumes it seems to be ok, therefore I think it's not hardware related...
Yes, I also get the alarm issue.
It would make me feel much better if HTC came out and said, Yes its a software issue. Then I would patiently wait for a hotfix. Otherwise if its hardware, I would need to send the handset back and get it replaced. And my 28 days is running out.
Has anyone submitted a bug/support request with HTC for this?
My problem is specific for the Earpiece and not the speaker on the back of the HD2.. therefore low quality in call!
Can't say I've noticed any different sound quality - better or worse - than my last phone.
For me also: background intermittent hiss (from speaker and bt earset)
Your problem sounds like to be a feedback issue between the speaker and microphone. I haven't noticed it so far, but try and adjust the threshold level in sound settings and see if it changes anything.

Could you please explain, what you mean with threshold settings? The system volume?
My earpiece and speakerphone distort, they are also far too loud on minimum settings. I have rung O2 for a replacement but they are out of stock.
Hmm, mines perfect...
same problem here ....
any news regarding this problem ?
My problem is a little bit different. My speaker is completely OK, but if call somebody he is complaining the very poor sound quality, sometimes he even doesn't understand what I am talking to him.
i'm not ok... sometines i have very strong background noise... like a "hush"... i had a nokia e71 before and it was perfect...

I get this since i changed to my new radio, but not before, but not all the time only when im in my bedroom, (hhmm pc, wireless network, laptop, netbook) makes me wonder

This must be a problem in the software. I've open a new thread about (with fring you can chack that the speaker is ok).
Can someone write me a correct registry parameters for InCall or InCall2 or AttenuationCategories
HKCU \ ControlPanel \ SoundCategories \ Ring \
HKCU \ ControlPanel \ SoundCategories \ InCall \
HKCU \ ControlPanel \ SoundCategories \ InCall2 \
HKCU \ ControlPanel \ SoundCategories \ InCall3 \
i have te same problem, tried everything several roms and radio's nothing help.i send my phone back,is 5 week old now, have warranty
Yes, I have this problem as well. But I hear "static" during low volume situations. I'm going to return mine for a replacement.

I notice that every now and then my tytn speakers make that typical noise you get when your mobile is close to a loudspeaker. Sounds rather cheap. My wizzard never did that.
Does anyone else have this?
Haventh had that problem. Speakers work fine, no interference.
Don't meet this problem yet

Actually I suffer from something else:
While the volume of the loudspeaker in speaker phone mode is far too loud (and toggling it to minimum alsomost changes nothing), the volume in handset mode is far too low (increasing the volume also doesn't help here).
In speakerphone mode thus the sound is actually distorted because of the overwhelming volume.
As in both cases the loudspeaker is the same this can only be an issue of initial settings somewhere in the handset, worst case hardcoded in the ROM.
If anyone knows an appropriate reg tweak I'd appreciate that a lot.
Otherwise I hope that this be included as a substantial improvement in any future firmware update (mine is 1.18, German localized, but generic = no operator binding).
I wonder if anyone else with same firmware version experiences the same.

Thats true, got the same problem. Voice is too loud in speaker mode and too silent the regular way. Haventh had time to explore this issue more. Had this problem in every rom I've tried. Hopefully they will fix it in future roms or something.
Yep have noticed the same problems also - sometimes the "mobile next to the speaker" issue occurs and the loud / soft thing too.
same **** here ... also my crt monitor @ work is flickering every 15-20 mins ... damn ...
How do you find the Earpiece sound quality and voicecall performance compared to previous owned phones?
I think too many people where unhappy with the device because of the phone performance in general. I can't understand how such basic features where not treated as top priority specs.
It's " Who cares " typo sorry, not possible to edit the poll.
Thanks
EDIT: FLashed Radio 2.06 and voicecall quality is better but STILL CRACKLES
i find the sound quality is weird with this phone i.e.
rear speaker = loud but tinny, and seems that anymore than 70% volume and the software overpowers the actual speaker and causes distortion
headphones = ok sound quality very vocal friendly, quite nice for ambient vocal tracks, soft and fluff sound, i used shure se310 headphones so some of the best around
call earphone = very bad, even with the volume very low it still distorts when people talk, im not sure why this is and i thought it was a damaged speaker but its as if the sound is to harsh with the high feq.... so only call or accept calls from people with deep voices lol
It isn't necessarily the ear piece that's the problem, it's the VOLUME being pumped through it. The volume on my HD2 is ridiculously loud so I'm not surprised that my speaker is popping and distorting!
i went with the "it could be better" option
i always find myself switching to the speaker, then going back (repaeat cycle over and over with each call just trying to find an easy way to make out what people are saying.
a couple of mods would ultimately fix it, but im happy that the speaker is loud. Which kinda means its got the Umpgh
i use the headphines for music, i switched into an inear buds. it really makes a difference

Yes but it's TOO LOUD. I wouldn't mind if it went loud but I also want it to go quiet too, it's way too loud at the lowest volume setting. I can't use the speakerphone at all, it is destroying itself with distortion. I actually can't use the earpiece close to my ear either, due to criminally high volume. I use the earphone as a speakerphone - I kid you not. I don't know if it's just certain batches but my HD2 would be suitable for almost-deaf people.
Actually the keypad tones also are WAY TOO LOUD! I was in a meeting and it was like everyone was trying to find out where the was sound coming from... I had to turn it off.. a shame..
Not to forget also the pain the earpiece causes during phone calls. This thing is really sharp !!!
In terms of HTC phones, I've had the Kaiser and Raphael before the HD2, and I must say that the call quality on the HD2 is the best of the three! This wold be both through the speaker on the back (speaker phone) and through the earpiece.
I agree that the initial volume was way too loud, however there is a tweak somewhere on the board where you edit a registry entry for initial call volume, and that helped tremendously. So I'm actually quite pleased.
People who made the HD2 @ HTC Tech.. were a little bit deaf I think..
Bad speaker quality because of distortion and popping

Yea I think so, I am gonna try the registry tweak; hopefully it's gonna work.
voicecall is pretty bad because of the random noise similar to radio static. This nosie is particularly noticed when no one is speaking.

Same here ... someone spoke with HTC about this issue !?!?!?
I am not really bothered by the noise but by the poping and cracking sound the earpiece makes.
The registry tweak did not work for me as I expected
I will have to wait for a hotfix if any... I hope HTC will consider this issue...

have had the phone for only about a week but no issues with random noise. I do find that the loudspeaker distorts @ max volume, but just one notch below that and it's ok.
think the Touch HD has better earpiece / loudspeaker, but the HD2 can output higher volume on loudspeaker compared to the HD, so that's a plus.
maybe it's an issue with your phone operator?
For people who experience the background noise - Have you tried (if possible) both GSM and UMTS/HSPA (3G)?...

What tweaks worked for you guys to eliminate the distortion? when I lower the volume I keep hearing like a popping sound and cracks even with the headset.
Any idea? thanks.

Currently I'm only using GSM network but I will try making phone calls using UMTS. Don't think that will solve this problem though.
About tweaks I haven't tried any because all tweaks I saw were related to the distortion due to extremely high volume (which is not my case).

Same here, I need to remove the cracking noise, more like filtering the call quality, it's not a hardware fault im sure.
When I talk on this phone, the sound is very poor... Although not too loud (like other complaints) but the sound crackles at high frequencies... The speakerphone is even worse...
Is anyone aware of some tweaks to improve communication sound on this phone?
Can AudioBooster be set up to work with the phone's sound not only the music player? Any other options ???
Thank you in advance.

I think the high volume on this phone is artificially boosted over what it's meant to be, i.e. HTC have modified the audiopara (or something like that) in the Windows folder to try and boost the speakers sound over what it's meant to be.
(Something that ROM coookers figured out on the Diamond I think).
I think, maybe someone can reduce those values back to normal? The speaker will be a little quieter, but it won't crackle or distort as much.

Which radio do you recommend? I have Leo_RADIO_2.07.50.27_2 and a terrible sound while on the phone.
Sound is to loud, impossible to lower volume enough. Much distortion even at lowest volume (which still is to loud). Bad sound in cable handsfree and BT handsfree.
Soundquality while playing music on the other hand is perfect in speaker, handsfree and BT handsfree.
Suggestions?
Since sound is often a pretty subjective matter, so I'd like to interject that the phone network only transmits from around 300 Hz to 3,000 Hz. Therefore the sound of a voice over your phone will never sound as clear and nice as it should, let alone like the 192 kbps-MP3-file you are playing
If it's worse compared to other phones however it's, as stated above, likely a problem with the radio. I use the 2.08.50.08_2 from [REF]The HTC HD2 Radio ROM Thread and have a quite decent quality.
I agree totally - if it sounds good or bad is individually. But, the sound quality in my HD2 is far worse than in my 5 years old SonyEricsson, and when I borrowed a Nokia the other day I was surprised how good (clear, crisp, distorsion free) a cell phone can sound.
I have a lot of distorsion and all too loud sound. Often I have to hold my phone 20 cm away from my ear just to avoid getting half deaf..
Thanks for the tip, I'll try the 2.08.50.08_2 Radio and hope for a better sound

little info: some users said that the soundlevel is now always set up to 100%...but try it on your own!

Thanks, trying it now, will report back after tomorrow's hardcore testing at work..
Return it if you can...
I had Nokia E71 before and it's speaker is fo another level better than HD2... BUT, question is: when I'm gonna use speakerphone on my HD2? ... almost never
Seems better, but a little to subjective at the moment. Will keep trying and report back!
Definitely better after the patch. Quite good actually. I have not seen any side effects yet, only clear sound, and better volume.
Thanks for the hotfix!
Will try it on my colleague's phone also now.
sound quality
I used the hotfix as well but it appears to have made no difference whatsoever to the quality of sound during calls , so my phone is going back to htc again and if it returns with the same issues i will ask for a replacement as due to the ammoun of posts on here this is a major flaw in the phone and a highly irritating one too , i love this phone but the audio quality during calls is appalling in comparison to all my previous phones .
After a couple more days of testing I found out that the patch gave no effect at all. BUT: I found out another thing: Even though the system volume is at lowest according to the meter, if you increase, you actually lower the volume. So, if you during a call first increase and then decrease the volume, it gets acceptable. Still to loud though.
So, it seems like what HTC really should do is to get the dialer use the sound mixer properly. Today it is obviously oversteering which creates distorsion.
this is a war we won't win

I've bought my HD2 back in Dec the 11th and since then I've been in contact with HTC about fixing this problem. They've given me a debug tool to run on my device, sent the logs twice and so far they've done nothing about it. I've given up. What I do for outgoing calls, while it rings I turn the volume all the way up and then all the way down before the other party answers. doing this you get a decent sound. Can't do much about the incoming calls,
As far as flashing different radios and roms... I've flashed about 30time already. tried all the possible radio/rom combinations but with only slight different results. Nothing to brag about!
the fix I attached helps a little bit!
If anybody finds and cure let us all know! please!!!!!
Hello,
I'm running a X10i since 2 days. I must say that I'm quite happy with it but I have difficulties with the sound of the ear speaker : as the volume is quite low, I have to increase the volume and when I increase the volume higher than 3/4 to full I hear a lot of cracking and popping.
Do you have the same problem ?
BR
On my phone to sound is quite good. I have to volume at max, and dont have any bad sounds, or unwanted noices.
is this while using the bluetooth headset?
Ive not tested it with the bluetooth set yet...
I seldom use that...
So, I think the sound in the phone itself is great.
How's the ringer volume, because I've heard random reports of it being pretty low.
Unfortunately, it is kind of low....
And i noticed when something blocks the speaker, like having it in the pocket, it becomes even lower...
And if in a somewhat noicy area.. Forget about hearing it..
this is currently one of my main gripes with the X10. The earpiece volume on my unit (firmware 1.6) is extremely low. At highest volume I get cracking and popping. If there is even a little background noise it becomes almost impossible to hear through the earpiece. It's getting to the point where the phone is almost unusable in many situations. Also the speaker volume is quite low as well. Miss many calls and notifications even at full volume.
I have just used the BT headset thus far. and the sound quality is good up until I attach them to the speakers.. Then they make a ****t up sound when I change song, or when it is no sound on at all. This does not happen when I connect them directly to the phone.
I’m having problems with the in-call volume on my X10I.
I called orange uk and was told that there have been many similar complaints with this handset on their network.
I was told them that it may be the deal breaker for me and told them i wished to return the handset.
The rep said that the reason the call volume was low was because i was using my old sim and not the one that was shipped with the upgrade.
Apparently there a certain profiles assigned to each sim for each respective handset???
The rep was confident that this would resolve my in call volume issues.
Anyone else aware of this?
Personally I have no problem with the soundquality. My problem is just low volume in the earpiece. Hopefully this can be turned up in updates or custom ROMs.
Earpiece volume is my main issue. However I am being told that it is down to my sim and not a software issue on the X10.
That doesn't sound right to me (excuse the pun) especailly as so many others are having this same fault.
That's irony for you, it works really well at everything else just not as a phone!

Hahaha, yeah well... I can't really say if that's true. I'm gonna try and get a new SIM since mine is like... Two-three years old. But I doubt that the SIM is causing problems like this.
I did get a new SIM with my upgrade, but as i didn't want to be without a phone for Two hrs whilst my services transferred to the new SIM, i just popped in my old one.
I will pop my new one in tonight and post my results.
I'm not confident though.
is it normal to hear own echo during a call?
That depends.. Is the person you are calling in the same room?
I've heard the odd few people mention this but I can't say that i've experienced this.
The volumes that low i probably wouldn't hear it anyway
Am on .16 and the volume/quality is ok if a little quiet, am mostly still getting used to switching back to pda phones from a candy bar phone, they are very different on your ear!
Now i'm on 1.0.14 and i thought upgrading to 1.0.16 may fix my issues but that update is not available for me (Orange UK).

I think SE said that the .16 update was for certain carriers and not for the phone itself. And since SE refuses to release change logs we'll probably never know.
Okay so I just changed my SIM card with the brand new one that comes with it, and there's no change in volume... Talking to the tech guy he claims that on some phones it actually did make a difference. Hard to say what they're told to say and what actually happens though.
Thats weird, im getting my X10 on tuesday, and I currently have a desire, and the sound volume in the earpiece isnt that high, and also the ring volume isnt that high, I was hoping for better from the X10 ;-(
I just got it and noticed the earpiece volume is still low even with the volume turned all the way up.
Is there a setting I missed or maybe a registry fix?
Any help would be appreciated

Don't mean to offend you. I had the same issue but was more of a user issue. I kept increasing the volume not paying attention that I was adjusting the ring volume and not the system volume.
if that doesnt work you may need to return it. My friends HD2 had low speaker volume and low earpiece volume. As much as we tried, we couldn't get it to go.
N1M1TZ - No offense taken, I only adjusted the volume during a call and at max it is still quiet.
I checked the settings/sounds, no adjustment for the earpiece just the ringer and the system sounds.
marduk79 - after doing a little digging I have found that this is a common problem with this particular batch of phones.
The first batch came out and the volume was set way to high that it was actually blowing out the earpiece.
I think I may have found a solution, if it works I will post it.
Thanks for the assist.
So what is the solution... My first one had sweet loud ear piece volume. But alas, the speaker blew. My replacement is alright, but I want it to be a tad bit higher... Lots of years of loud punk rock have made me slightly def I think...
Anyone know if there is a cab or registry tweak or something that will make the volume louder in the ear piece speaker?

How low? Like so low you couldn't hear it, or just low enough to be annoying? Basically my first HD2 was nice and loud. The new one is about 3 bars lower sounding turned all the way up... Which annoys me because I know the other one was louder and it's hard to hear people if I'm in an environment with a lot of background noise.
I feel like if I tried to take it in to get a replacement they would think I was nuts.
headphone and phone speaker too low
I too beleive the headphone volume is way too low, when listening to music or taking a call on the headphones it is barely loud enough too hear if there is any background noise such as traffic or conversations going on nearby. I have the volume about 75% when listening to talk radio stations, on my headset, no background noise present and it is at normal listening level. So if there is background noise, I need 100% for it to be loud enough to hear clearly. The phone speaker is not much better, when listening to calls on speakerphone the percentages are about the same for equvilent listening circumstances. I have tried "AudioPara3 TMO" and notice little or no difference in sound. Does anyone know of anything that will increase the maximum volume level for both speakerphone and headphones?
I'd like to know if there is any registry hack to increase the line out volume as well. My line out volume is very low, I have to put it to about 50 percent to match what would be the 20-30 percent level of my old HTC Touch (Touch 1 to HD2 - quite an upgrade, eh?? )
