Just got my HD2 through as an upgrade from O2, but it doesn't seem to be picking up any SIM card I put in.
Anything obvious I'm missing?
I've done a hard-reset, but no joy.
Is it a duff unit?
Apologies if this seems like a silly question but have you inserted your SIM card the correct way? The correct way is back-to-front with the cut corner going in last.

Yeah, I've made sure it's the right way up. Checked the manual, and the little animation just to be sure. Seems like it's a duffer. I've spoken to O2 and they're getting a new one sent on Monday. Ho hum, was looking forward to setting it all up tonight. Friday night, that's sad, eh?
Hi I had the very same problem, try deleting the pin protection on ur sim card before inserting it in the hd2. hope this helps

My unlocked 8525 quit recognizing my SIM card this morning. It says "SIM card is missing, You can still makle emergency calls if your service provider supports it." The SIM card works in other phones, so it's not the card.
Is there any way to make it recognize my SIM card again? What went wrong?

Also..
I noticed that when I slipped the SIM into it's place, it kind of bends up a little. I didn't think much of it, and figured I hadn't noticed it before, but I got to thinking...so I tried putting it in again, and then the battery, and I sort of squeezed it together to compress the SIM down and then started the phone. It worked! I had a signal, and I called my home phone to confirm. And then as soon as I let go of the pressure it died again.
After looking at the space that the SIM card fits into, I couldn't see anything that would make it bend up like that.
Any help???
Post some pics if you can, many eyes might see something that one set may not.... also you could pm Mike Channon and see if he has any ideas, but without seeing, my guess is as good as yours (and Mikes is as good as everyones combined). Cheers...
I bought a used X1a from a reputable seller on ebay.
When I inserted the sim for the first time I was greeted by a 'sim card missing' notification. I wondered if my sim was broken so I inserted another sim and was greeted by the same notification.
I then hard reset the phone 2 times using the "left+right+power button" and software program, but sadly the xperia still showed the same error.
I then read that if I stick something in beetween the simslot and the battery forcing the sim to touch the connectors it might work. It didnt
I then read that a radio rom might change it but havent found or learned how to use one yet.
I use Rogers in Canada:
ROM: 1.02.948.8 (09/17/08
Radio: 1.06.25.29
Please help
Hmmmm....well there's stuff you can do to check and see what's wrong. Honestly.....if I were you.....id be more insistent on getting the device changed. Coz damn....its doing this on the very first run. Go back to the ebay dude and report it.....get another one
had the same problem. i jsut took the simcard out, reinserted it and voila ... it worked.

I took it out many times and reinserted it but it still says that my sim card is missing.
Did you insert the sim in any special way?
Even though it came unlocked im thinking it might have locked it self to a past sim card.
I remember when I inserted my old sim from my W910(unlocked) to a friends n95(unlocked) it wouldnt work. It also told me to insert a sim.
Is there any unlock software for the xperia, I know it comes unlcoked but I want to try.
I fixed it...................
Wow after having so many phones I cant believe I missed this.

Hi There,
I'm new so apologies if this has been asked before, I did try a search but to no avail.
I received my HD2 yesterday and when trying to put a Sim Card in it is really really stiff, I managed to snap one in the process (thankfully Virgin are sending a new one out). I then tried with an old Vodafone one which I got in but it took a bit of force and even then the phone didn't recognise it, upon removal it seems to have scratched the simcard contacts fairly badly.
Am I being a complete idiot or do you think I have a problem with my HD2?
Many Thanks
Ben
possible problems could be
inserted the wrong orientation!
trying to insert into the SDcard slot!!!!
SIM card usually comes in a bigger card, maybe there is still some excess plastic on the edge of the sim when you removed it!
Possible that there is something jammed in the SIM slot!
Or maybe there is something wrong with your phone.
only thing id say is the cut off corner goes in last.every phone i've seen beforethe cut corner goes first, but im sure it won't be that cos of course we all read the manual cover to cover before putting the sim in....didn't we? hehe
Thanks for the replys. I am fairly renowned for not reading instruction manuals (like all men i guess!!) but for once I actually did.
Defo tried to put it in the right way but it just wouldn't go in, i've tried this morning again with an old disconnected sim card and it seems to have free'd up quite a bit, it still feels kind of grindy (apologies for the made up word) and nothing like inserting a sim card into any phone i've had in the past but i'm keeping my fingers crossed it'll be fine.
Just got to wait for the replacement virgin sim now which is annoying because i'm itching to get using it, it's a beautiful bit of kit.
If you are in any doubt, get the phone switched out for a replacement. If there is a fault with the SIM socket, then it may well reappear when you least want it in the future!
You are trying this with the battery removed aren't you? It can be done with battery in but it is a lot more difficult to get the SIM card properly under the locating lugs.
I've switched SIM cards a lot, and there is absolutely no problem- it is as smooth as you'd expect from a snug-fitting slot!
Hi Neil, thanks for the reply, yes i'm trying it with the battery out and it definately couldn't be described as smooth so I suspect there may well be a problem with it.
I shall give virgin a call and arrange for a replacement.
Thanks again for your help.
p.s This is an awesome forum, i've been studying it all week in anticipation of receiving my HD2 (first winmo phone), looks like i'll have to wait a little longer before I get to properly use it though
I would get it replaced!
would be epic, is he tries to put it in the sd card place
I do have my moments but not even I could do that!!
Hi,
I rooted my phone using the ultimate s=off guide on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
However, with a SIM card in the phone, it says "No Sim card in phone (emergency calls only)"
I've tried both a Rogers and Mobilicity Sim card and they both work in other phones. How can I get it to read my SIM card?
Thanks in advance for any help. I really hope I can get this working.
I'm really hoping for a reply here, because I have a feeling that the phone is damaged and I bought it on ebay.
I flashed the phone with the royal ginger rom and I tried adding APN settings for Rogers, however nothing pops up for me to select after I click save. It is just an empty black screen.
Is it worth it to buy an unlock code from ebay and try unlocking it that way? It looks like to me that the phone is not recognizing the SIM card at all.
If you used the gfree method and added your APN, it should work, unless theres no coverage in your area.

No it did not. As soon as I got the phone I tried putting my SIM in and it did not ask me to input unlock code. So I rooted it using the gfree method and it still didn't read my SIM card. I'm left to believe that I was sold a broken phone, so I'm going to ask the seller for a refund.

yep, good idea. hardware problem that I'm sure the seller knew about
On a side note. Is it possible that the seller did an unroot and reset to factory settings improperly that is what broke the phone? They claim it was fully functional and the seller did do this before shipping, so if that is the case I''m going to make it clear.

Ok, thank you for your help. This phone was definitely broken when they sent it to me then. They are feeding me a load of bs at the moment. Good thing this purchase was protected by paypal.

That's your best move but first, slide a piece of folded paper into the SIM slot and then put the SIM card in under it so it'll make contact, that's the only way my MT4G will recoginze the SIM. I use regular notebook paper folded once and cut to be about 1/2 the width of the SIM slot and long enough to let me grab it and pull it out so I can remove the SIM.
Try it, it might work. If it does, it's not a big deal, you can return the phone or you may decide to keep it.

Hmm, this is interesting. I'll try it when I get home. I've tried pushing on the SIM with a bit of pressure while the phone was on and it didn't make a difference though. The SIM slot is pretty tight though, do you place the paper first, then the SIM card?
Tried the paper thing and it still didn't work. Going to have to try and get a refund.
You know, now that I think about it, the phone was powered on when it arrived. It was in postal for about a week, could that have caused the SIM to get damaged?
Dears
Facing the problem of no service and no sim card detected on my v20 after a reboot or randomly ,i ve tried every thing and found out that the problem is coming from the sim card reader ,there is a space left between the sim card and the reader causing the problem ,the fix is to full the space with a small paper or something to force the sim card into the reader
I know this is a necro post, but I wanted to confirm that this DOES indeed work. I got a second hand V20 from eBay today and couldn't get the thing to recognize the SIM Verizon was giving me at all. Gotta go back tomorrow to have them activate it now that I know this trick works on this phone!!

I ended up sending the phone back for exchange, after a small 1" drop the SIM was dislodged and the adapter broke and got a new one which didn't have the issue, so I unfortunately don't have any pictures. The best way however to place it is to ensure that it is directly over the SIM card and goes into the slot with your SIM, it should be providing some pressure on the back of the SIM to push it into the slot firmly, but not bulge the MicroSD adapter's metal too much, if you've done that, a fall may just break your SIM reader.
