I would like to create a new thread dedicated for trying to tweak the X1 keyboard. This is because of the common problems already known, such as repeated key input on a single press, and I hope that we can all put our heads together to overcome it.
Here's my part of the hint.
1. Just type as needed, even with typos.
2. After finish typing, use the spell-check feature in the SMS/e-mail menu.
3. This can help quickly fix mistakes, you can even add words that you know that you want it to replace. Use OEM X1 Keyboard for better control.
That is how I try to overcome the crappy keyboard, but there is still a few things I would really like to get:
1. Auto replace multiple spacebars. Sometimes multiple spacebar inputs come out and the spell-check feature doesn't detect it. Even XT9 Add-word won't allow spacebar inputs.
2. Typing speed inhibitor. If there is a program that blocks any keyboard input for a few milliseconds, all the X1 keyboard problem will be sorted.
Eg. Pressing "d" and another "d", such as for "add", takes about 0.3 seconds delay between each "d". If there is a program that enforces these 0.3 or 0.5 seconds on "no-input-register", you won't get "adddd" anymore!
But anyway, anyone else have nice keyboard tweaks that you would like to share?
Effectively, the only way to get a functional keyboard on an X1 is to clean that dirt-loving f**ker (talking about the keyboard) regularly.
Actually the Keyboard is EXCELLENT if u get the guts to clean it once every "some" months.
Excuse me, how do you clean the keyboard? Do you open it? Or simply with some product?
Youtube: Xperia Disassemble
Follow the procedure until you get to the keyboard. Problem with this is frequent disassembly caused my to crack one of the side frames of the phone. The X1 has very thin plastic frames that needs to be handled with care.
I've also heard blowing HARD into the keyboard keys works too, but can anyone confirm that the mucous involved won't damage the internal wirings?
you won't crack your xperia unless you have no idea what u doin/manuality/patience.....
Blowing won't be effective....cleaning will

The problem is that it will eventually get dirty and unresponsive again. I can't clean this sucker all the time.

What contacts? You mean opening the phone up and clean it with alcohol, or just swipe alcohol on the keyboard without opening up the phone?
If it's the latter and if it works, even just for a few weeks before it gets dirty again, I'm dead interested.
Is there any way to use HTC software keyboard auto correction with X1 hardware keyboard?

I think "repeated key" is a hardware failure ,when the production of X1.
Replacement is the best way,and get good results
I did get the replacement done, but the key still repeats unfortunately. How many of you guys went for replacement and had no problems with the keyboard for over 4 months?
Try first to change these values:
HKCU\ControlPanel\Keybd\InitialDelay to 750
HKCU\ControlPanel\Keybd\RepeatRate to 30
HCLM\services\keypad\ActionDebounceTimeout to 90
It could help a little...
i gave up on the hardware keyboard. I still have about 1 month in warranty but the service centre in indonesia is so crap that they'll need about a month to fix the damn keyboard.
if u are lucky,it will only take a month. Unlucky, and u will lose your phone for 3 month. Either way i cant go without my phone for that long.
I just have to make due with soft keyboard now. Done all the registry and fiddling around with the repeat rate thing,it doesn't help at all.
Im about to sell this thing but the value had decreased so much from i first got it. It was $800 compared to $460 now...
the point is,im not a happy chap
just clean it man....It's really eaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasy .............and the xperia is a great device, dun sell it !!!
Has anyone tried the 4mm thing? If I have to open up the X1, I would do so for one last time and modify it with the 4mm thing.
Would be crappy if I modified it and yet it still has repeatings...

I have to admit, the tutorial does looks easy but im not exactly the kind of person with steady hands and nerve to do "surgery like this". When i bought the phone i know i will have to fiddle around with all the Winmo settings and such, set it to whatever i like and so on. But I certainly didn't expect Sony Ericsson to tell us to get our phone to the service center every 4 months or so to clean the keyboard. Worse, i didn't prepare to do a "surgery" periodically on my phone.
The idea of opening up your phone every time the keyboard gets dirty is just not on. Not to an end user, especially when they consider this is a business type of phone. Surely there is no business in disecting ur phone, is thee? To me, that's just bad bad business by SE
So i dont know, i'll probably still keep it because i'll be going to Japan in 2 months or so, im gonna need the GPS from X1 so i dont get lost. It's soft keyboard all the way for me now

I know you can download different today plug-ins, and i know about VisBar and such, but I don't see how your today screens look so different from mine (after looking at various 'today screen' threads).
My screen is just several horizontal lines, with the usual "no new messages", "active tasts", etc, and a couple of plugins.
I see people's screens with a completely different layout.
Cheers for any replies

Thanks for the link, very helpful.
How do you get rid of only the bottom toolbar in WM5? I downloaded the program that other people had used, but I could only get rid of the top bar (which i'd prefer to keep), and not the bottom one.
Cheers
matheprat: If you're referring to the program ToggleToday, I haven't released it yet for WM5, but it's coming very soon.

If you need an alternative, try Wisbar Desktop Advance.

Note: Wisbar 2 or desktop is very very laggy
Use PPX instead if you want better speed, its just as good as WisDesktop.
This is the skin I m currently using
Does PPX work on WM5? Looking on their website it doesn't mention specific compatibility, but has anyone got it runniung satisfactorily?
Cheers,
Fin
Yes, I forgot to mention PPX. It takes quite a bit of headscratching to get it set up, but it works well in the end. Never tried it on WM5.

I'm still looking for a alternative interface for my phone to operate more easily with my fingers instead of my stylus.
It's so hard to quickly find a contact in my contact list while on a bike, in my car, etc since the scrollbar is like 3 pixels wide. Or to lock the phone or close an application, the icons are to frigging small
Not that I have big hands, rather small for a guy even but still...
Any suggestions?
matheprat: not sure when it'll be released, when I get time!
I'm working on too many other things as well, it's really just when I get a few minutes to work on each bit. Hopefully release fairly soon, as I said, WM5 is done, I need to join it to my old WM2003 code and then check it against a companion today plugin I wrote. I didn't mean to come accross pushy, sorry if I did. I know there's a lot of work needed in developing programs, and no doubt it will be worth it when it is released.
Many thanks
matheprat: no offence taken at all, didn't think you were being pushy.
ToggleToday was one of the first programs I ever wrote, and then I bought myself a Universal to start development on, but accidently wrote VJBigPhone and that kept me busy for a month or so
Now VJBigPhone has gone quiet, I'm finally getting around to re-writing ToggleToday! It's a messy program to write, particularly for dual WM5/WM2003 compatibility, but the basic code is written. Now I'm wrapping it together and will work on a GUI for it.

The MOST stable Today Information plugin eva
By the way, can someone recommend the most stable Today Information Plugin?
I was using latest PowerLevel plugin by ScaryBear but it has lots of memory allocation/deallocation problems. Then I switched to simple 15Kb "TodaysInfo" plugin by Lou Terrailloune (v1.7) and it is quite stable but it has significant rendering delays when rotating screen. So, what is the most stable/fastest one to show battery/memory levels and perhaps it can inform you when your battery charge completed (aka PowerLevel/AudioInformer)?
Thanx!!!
Sounds good - any chance of a link?
Hey guys, I just ordered a replacement keypad and casing for my phone, so I'm going to be opening it up in the next few days to replace it.
So my questions is, does anyone need any high-res macros of any internal components?
I'll be shooting using a canon 5d, macro lens, and light tent, so I should be able to get some really detailed shots for you guys if you need any.
And can anyone point me in the right direction to find some instructions on how to disassemble this thing???
Thanks,

Hi Kai
Well since you ask and to save me the bother!!! There is something but it depends!! When you say keypad, are you talking about the front lower hard key assembly or the keyboard?
It's particularly the keyboard I'm interested in. Not just a rear photo but a breakdown of the construction. I am assuming it is the usual printed circuit combined with a conductive rubberised template beneath the keys. Essentially I would like photos (super high res. is not necessary) to cofirm construction with the aim of creating a practical fix for those that have the odd key that needs an extra firm key press.
If it's the front keypad you are replacing then of course I would not want you to de-construct your keyboard - that could create the problems that some others have with "dodgy" keys.

No I am only replacing the front keypad.
I could take my keyboard apart, but I am hesitant if it may cause problems. I've already got problems with my keypad, the last thing I need is to have to order a new keyboard too!
But I am willing to take the phone apart further, as long as I dont risk doing any serious damage. I have never opened up the TyTN before, but I have done work on Motorola's, Sony's and Nokia's before, with sucess, so I'm not too concerned.

Thanks for the links, I read the disassembly guide and it didn't look to complicated.
I have a question that you may be able to answer though... The reason I bought a new front keypad is because sometimes my buttons stick, or just dont work, no matter how hard I press them.
Now looking at the cnn.cn website I see they are selling the printed circuit board that goes below the pinpad. I have a feeling that that is probably what I need to replace, not the keypad (oh well, it was only 7.99).
I'm just wondering what your thoughts are on this and if you've ever stumbled across the issue before?

Well, i've seen a mix of hardware and software issues related to this. Of the hardware ones I have not seen anyone report back having fixed it themself.
I onder also about the connector being the culprit, though it is retained by screews. The buttons sticking and the buttons not workingg may be unrelated of course or could mean butonns are not quite in alignment with the board.

Hey guys, I'm loving the Xda Trion (Hermes), but I'm finding it's use as a phone / SMS device a bit sub-par. It's so annoying to have to use the stylus to send a quick text message, for example, and having to use the built in keyboard and trying to text while walking is a non-starter.
Basically, I'm just wondering what third-party software other people are using to make the Trion more of a one-handed phone (in the style of a Sony Ericsson K800, for example). I'm in particular need of a half decent SMS app, that lets me use the touchscreen with my thumb. It doesn't matter if it's free or commercial software; I'm interested in anything that can make the phone functionality of this pda better.
Also, is there any third party software that can improve the camera? Or anything that can manage associations (i.e. the applications which open whenever a file has a certain extension e.g. ".avi").
Cheers!!
Many different questions warrant many different posts, best not to lump them all together.
For managing associations, I use GSFinder.
What do you want to do to improve the camera?
Have you tried SPB Mobile Shell (re one hadned use)?
V
Hiya!
I would rather lump them in altogether so that I can get lots of different answers and opinions to look over in the same thread!
Regarding the camera, seeing as it's essentially a software program which takes the pictures, I just wondered if there is third-party software out there that provides a better interface to the camera, or removes the blurriness from photographs.
Haven't tried the Mobile Shell. Does this improve texting with one hand?
Edit: The camera and file associations thing is secondary really. It's the calling and texting with one hand that I'm really interested about.

Mobile Shell doesn't help with texting, but makes all the other functions more or less on your phone much easier to operate by thumb! Free trial available.
For texting, try Tengo Thumb, which means you can just use your thumb(s) to input text, no stylus needed. Free trial available.
I think the moderators generally advise keeping posts to one topic (although the moderators are the worst examples for not doing this), and then making sure that your post title matches your post, eg
"Miscellanous musing and ruminations on the use of single digit physical input, improving the camera software and how to assign file associations".
And squeeze that into the topic title length limitation!
Check out the various text input (SIP) replacements that will let you define your own large input keys. Some are free.
I wrote a skin for ThumbKeys once, which I found to be particularly effective.

Hey vijay, nice to see u're back
What "thumbkeys" are you refering to?
Sorry. my bad Glancing at my own old posts show that I have some kind of Freudian oversight embedded in my mind - it's not thumbkeys, despite me always referring to it as such, it's Touch Keyboard - http://www.orthancsoftware.com/TKeyboard.htm
I haven't used it for many years, since moving to the Hermes I use the SIP less and less. But for relatively large amounts of input on a non keyboard device, Touch Keyboard was the easiest for me to skin to my satisifaction, after trying many types of skinnable keyboards.
There are other more "conventional" SIPs for use with big thumbs.
If you're a real psycho you can check this one out:

PS: yeah, I don't know if I'm "back" yet, I've been super busy at work (I'm a lawyer and we just got absolutely blown out of the water on this big case that took 6 months of last year up).

What I do is that I have installed the "Smart Dialer 2.0" which can be found at www.pocketpc.myluckypda.com.
Using this application you search for your contact using T9 (Very good for one handed operation due to large buttons). Once the contact is found this application has the option to take you directly to messaging application with the touch of a button. From here on I use the "SPB On Screen Keyboard" to type the message and send it. Alternately I can also use the slide out keyboard on my Jasjam but I am a bit reluctant to do so for the fear of its getting loose over time.
And if you want real one handed operation I suggest you use Smart Dialer to search for the contact and take you to the messaging application, followed by the Intellipad as has been posted above.
Regards
Hey guys, many thanks for the excellent suggestions so far! I'm gonna research these when I get back from work today.
Cheers!
Just wanted to say I'm using the Intellimate Phone Pad and it's awesome!
One thing I noticed though, it's actually an HTC cab, dated 2004. It does the job, but I'm just wondering if there is a newer version out there. I like to have the very latest version of all my apps!
Vijay,
Which of your apps (or is it someone else's?) makes your top bar have all of those icons with the counters for how many SMS's, missed calls, etc.
That seems like an excellent usage of the real estate!
You mean in this screenshot? Or something else?
V
yes, that screenshot.
the counters for email, sms, voicemails, etc. across the very top.
Major upgrade released, version 5.0
Upgraded version comes with a new attractive skin that allows the use of the new features:
Thumb mode which makes it possible to write quickly even without a stylus and thus makes this keyboard ideal for one hand use.
Correction mode in combination with the Preview feature ensures users only write the letters they intend to.

Just tried it and I'm not getting on well with it. Usually though it does take me a while to get used to a new keyboard, "touchpal" form teksoft is my preferred keyboard at the moment, It also has a new commercial version out. I'll try the resco a bit more, but my first impression is unimpressed.
Uniqueboy,
Set the keyboard size to the one where you can use your thumbs, then either use your thumbs or, as I do, use a stylus on that size keyboard. Works for me but I appreciate we all have different tastes/preferences.
ATM, for me, this stands above SPB FSK.

I agree. I tried SPB Keyboard a while back and found it just plain hard to use (especially with SMS). This on the other hand is a breeze to SMS.
Looks nice but I can't get a simple answer as to how to enter a "_" (underscore) char using the iPhone-like skin on Resco's forum. Also, there's not much info on how to customize the keyboard itself although there are various ini's and config settings.
PocketCM seems to be a bit better as far as customization is concerned.
$20! Yikes. I mean, well if you don't want it then don't buy it. Currently PCM keyboard is free and probably better because you can skin/customize it to heck. But it's good to see more usable soft keyboards coming out. I still can't believe it took the iPhone to make WinMo developers to do this. We(WinMo users) could have used somthing like these years ago!

If most of the features were provided by WinMo, then our forum won't be so crowded like nowadays.
I just try to see it from + side..
Edit:
What the heck!!
All replies made by senior.. oops.. I need to get a hell out of here ..
VERY nice that it's gettin bigger in landscape mode.

Looks nice but I can't get a simple answer as to how to enter a "_" (underscore) char using the iPhone-like skin on Resco's forum. Also, there's not much info on how to customize the keyboard itself although there are various ini's and config settings.

Agreed. I need a period and comma on the first keyboard screen, as well as the ability to get to a "_" and "\" without using the full keyboard. If there were some decent layout choices, this would be a winner, as the spacing and response is good from what I have seen thus far.
I'm not going to pay $20 for something that should have been on the damn phone when I bought it, as good as it may be. I use PocketCM keyboard now, which works fine. I like Touchpal too but I only use it at home where I sms in 1 language. I could pay for it but won't because it should have been there in the first place.
The same could be said for PocketCM contacts and some other tools. Why does someone have to make this in his free time? MS should have done it and if it wasn't for the iPhone craze we'd still be without these great pieces of software.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying for software. I just don't pay for software that fixes problems that shouldn't have to be fixed by end-users.
(Sorry for the rant)
I have resco keyboard pro .rar where do I put it to work?
I used PCM Keyboard until the newest Spb came out a few days ago. I used it for 5 minutes before paying $15 for it. The key spacing is intelligent, and the layout are the best I've seen anywhere. What really sold me was the convenient placing of the ctrl key and the intelligent way the keyboard changes when you press it.
I don't expect I'll ever find better, though I can still hope. Seems clear just from the screenshot though that the Resco still has a lot of catching up to do.

a rar is a packed file like zip, so unpack it and install the file or whatever is in the unpacked folder.
The other thing is that this is really basic knowledge for any user of a computer, so play a little with a PC will help you
MOD EDIT: SHHHHHH!

Thanks! That was my first post here and I really was amazed how fast you guys answered that. So I downloaded a program called winace and I unpacked it. I got the actual keyboard which I installed on my storage card and a resco keyboard keygen. Where do I put that. I am sorry that I am a noob.

This is not a particularly good place to talk about keygens. It implies pirated software and that's sort of against the rules here.
AJ
I am sorry. I didnt know what is keygen.
i hate getting the demon trial is over blah blah lol
MOD EDIT: No warez requests, or i will ban you!
If you like the software you should buy it! XDA is no place for trading warez. Please stay on topic.
@Ponde
You will find your answer HERE.
Sorry for my off topic post.

looks alot like the old leaked pics..
at least it looks like there's speakers at either end of it and not a paltry one like on the X1
Looks a bit fat. Speakers on both sliding parts seem like a waste.
The speakers aren't at the top and bottom of the phone [in portrait mode]. They are on the two back slits of the phone. The speaker grille design is aesthetic. I've seen phones with fake windows mobile speaker grilles... and they are usually Samsung, but my wish will come true if I am wrong about the X1.
I am in love with both the X2 and Rachael,
the X1 is the beginning and im glad to be a part of that now I want the next chapter, something inside knows that SE is going to kick some ass with the next gen of xperias and i cant wait to see how this story pans out.
come on SE show us what u can REALLY do. Damn they are going to be good.
The blue prints look alot nicer than the real thing.
My only wish is to changed the top row into number keys and add FN CTRL Indicators.
my WISH is to get a tiny cell wtf, the x1 so thick and heavy!
the best keyboard is on the touch pro2, if only the were a jack 3.5mm and material buttons like the x1, htc wouldhavedone thebest cell ever, i'mnot talking even about the xperia panel which are so ridiculous....
however I think x1 has inovations like the opticalmouse very useful to surf the web AND the PAD(which seems to have disapered on the X2...), the camera which was the best when it came out. that's it.
speaker is crappy, my cell cracked (I had to send it twice to get repaired)
don't think I am against the x1 but we must admit that it is not so GREAT

I would rather have a keyboard cursor arrows than a D-pad that is hard to press. And the X2 delivers that. Besides, the main reason for a D-pad on the for me is that it allows me to move among the text and edit them but the buttons are too thin on X1 and optical mouse either goes too fast or too slow. And even worst no one realizes that D-pad is used more often on the text field then on menu navigation. By doing this, the arrow keys on the X2 is perfect text editing.
Haven't you realized that most of the time the X2's optical-joystick-only-feature is perfect for menu navigation especially when the phone is closed you usually don't type anything. And when the phone is open: there you have it, cursor keys that work exactly like a D-pad but even better than the X1's optical joystick. Why do people think the X2's optical joystick is a bad design?
D-pad + optical joystick = Win. Anything else is a big ass failure in my book.... Why downgrade it when you have the perfect setup as it is?
i dont believe that "thing" is the next Xperia.
why would they build something so ugly after they made an amazing phone like the X1 !?
& everyone knows that SE cares so much about the style even the cheapest phones they got look good!
i think the leaked pix & the blue prints belong to the X1 , as they made that ugly ass phone & made it better.
