H - myTouch 3G, Magic General

E is for edge and 3G is common sense but since last night my radio indicator displays H, was thinking it was hspda but not really sure. Anyone seen anything like this?

My phone also shows h, but i assumed that it was hspda too....

I get a E, but yea that's what the H means.

oh?
what network are you on?

The 'G' as 3G icon has started to flash on over the last few days in the 604/778!!!

Could it be that Rogers is finally rolling out the 3G network in the 604/778
area? I heard the GTA would be first... well no surprise there,
but I figure these blips of the 'G' icon maybe hardware setup and testing
during the wee hours as to avoid making people go "OH GEE, IT'S FINALLY
A G'Thang".
Anyone else see that 'G' pop up after 2AM starting this week?

I presume that you mean "3G" or "U" or "H", not "G" (which means "GPRS"). Yes, Ottawa is now live as well (finally). Although, I am not too impressed with the signal strength. My office is about 500 metres from a cell site and I get four solid bars with GSM, only one or two with UMTS. I drove all over the west part of Ottawa quite a bit yesterday and never saw it go above two bars. Is this what we have to look forward to with UMTS, or is it just that not all of the cell towers are lit up yet?

Yes G as in 3G. My handset's OS ROM displays "G" instead of "U" for 3G.
Here in Vancouver they don't have it set up and working yet but I did see
the "G" blip on and off after 2AM this week. I confirmed with Rogers that
they are planning a 3G roll out in June '07 so this just maybe it but I'm not
holding my breath.

As far as I know on my handset the "G" is for 3G as in UMTS and the "E" is for
the Edge. I have always seen the E showing on my handset but this week
the G has popped up for a few seconds here and there after 2AM. When I'm
in Japan all I see is the G icon and there's no GSM or GPRS on SoftBank.

G is GPRS... Why would it be any different on your handset? Maybe you're roaming out of your edge coverage and hitting GPRS only territory.
Get happy when you see 3G/U/H.

Could be the OS ROM that I'm using isn't "stock".

no G = GPRS no question sorry! 3G = UTMS H = HSDPA this is a well known fact check your carriors information just to check. What rom are you running? If its a newer WM6 it like duttys rom you have in your sig it will show 3G or H for UTMS and HSDPA
Also the radio version has something to do with what icon is shown for what but all the newer ones should show 3G or U or H
G = GPRS
E = EDGE
3G/U = UTMS
H = HSDPA
Seems to me that you dropped to GPRS for a few minutes not to 3G

Thats right, this is the behaviour I've seen as well.
G = GPRS (2.5G, about 50-60kbit/sec)
E = EDGE ("2.75G", about 100-200kbit/sec)
3G or U = UTMS (3G, about 300-400kbit/sec)
H = HSDPA ("3.5G", about 1+mbit/sec)
If you really want to confirm if its 3G or not, switch your phone to WCDMA-only mode in the phone settings. If you don't get a signal, it means no 3G. Or conversely, switch your phone to GSM-only mode (this limits the phone to GPRS/EDGE), and if you are still getting the "G", it means that it is GPRS and NOT 3G.

Well, that's is weird because I swear (sometimes quite rudely ) that the
last time I was in Japan for a week my X01HT was showing the G icon all the
time. At first I didn't think anything of it because I had a dog's breakfast of
a setup on my handset and this and that was either sort of working or not
at all. So now I guess I will check the icons out more closely when I return
to Japan.

3G and other Symbols

Hi i have the HD2 on 02 and when im in a 3G area my network operater changes to show 3G 02-UK but my signal bars dont change they stay the same as
(the 8th one down on the left of page 39)
the symbol to the left of the signal bars shows H with two arrows i havent seen my signal bars change to show
(5th one down on the right of page 39)
why is this?
Am i connected to 3G?
I have never seen my signal bars change like the ones on page 39/40?
http://www.o2.co.uk/deviceinfo/device-pdfs/htchd2eng.pdf
The manual is wrong.
My O2 HD2 on t-mobile shows 3G/G/H in a white box when no data connection on.
When data connection is on, you will see 3G/H/G (and possibly E [t-mobile dont have E]) with arrows, indicating data is on.
The manual suggests that the signal icon will intregrate with the data icon whereas we see it as data icon then signal icon.
What you are seeing is correct.
When it shows 3G with arrows, you are connected to 3G, H is slightly faster 3G, E is edge (slightly faster 2G) and G is GPRS 2G.
ok thats cool so when i see the H with arrows this is faster than 3G so what are the actual speeds of 3G & this H thingy? and does this mean that my HD2 is connected to a faster connection than my mates iGay 3GS
HSPDA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Downlink_Packet_Access
The actual speeds may vary, depending on network, tower distance, how many people connecting on that tower etc etc.
basically
GPRS=2G
EDGE=2.5G
3G=3G
H (HSDPA)=3.5G

HSPA not working?

I've had the phone for a couple of weeks now, and while 3G works pretty regularly, and I see pretty quick web, I've NEVER seen the "H" symbol indicating HSDPA in use. I have it enabled, but no go...and I've been downtown Philly, downtown Orlando, and King of Prussia PA area. H should be working somewhere in there...

Stock ROM doesnt have the H icon I believe. So while I'm sure its active and connected, its only going to say 3G. I didn't get the H icon until I flashed Energy ROM. It does change from H to 3G from time to time
All the H means is that your data connection is working at that time. It does not mean you have HSPA.
Huh, the manual on the stock rom says that 3G and H will both show depending on the connection. Any other way to check? I guess a speed test...

Stock AT&T Taskbar Icons

Anyone have a download of them? Just flashed a new rom and my 3G shows up as H on the taskbar. Anyone have a link to the originals? Not a big deal, but it'd be appreciated.

That H is for HSDPA, the higher-spec 3G (i.e. it indicates you're getting a theoretically faster connection right then)...you don't want to see that?
Ahhh really? Well, I checked the rom, and it seems like the H has just replaced the 3G icon all together. So, I'm either E (EDGE), or G, or H. For some reason, it's driving me crazy If anyone has a download, please post it.
Nevermind, I was wrong. I just got a 3G icon on there, walked a bit, and it jumped to H. You were right This can be locked, or whatever.
You can disable HSDPA icon with Advanced config (Data Connections), this way it always shows 3G. I do this because it's always referred to as 3G with Tmo USA.

Issues with data connection - 3G/H/H+ 3G not working but H/H+ are

Anyone else getting issue where the phone keeps switching between 3G and H? I see this happen a lot and my phone only seems to serve pages when H or H+ is showing.
It's normal. H or H+ take more energy, so it only switches to high HSDPA on demand.
Regards
Nuno
