The thread is really confusing because it starts out with people thinking that it's a troll then it seems to get serious and is now being reported on some blogs.

Does this mean it is possible to get the bravia engine for Xperia Play?

does the play not already have the bravia engine
Play does not have Bravia Engine.
All the other phones do and now including last gen model.
Exactly. The phone which would benefit most from crisper and more vibrant colors is THE ONLY ONE excluded from the whole new Xperia set. Aren't they dear, our SE friends?

Sony nears buying out Ericsson from venture: report
(Reuters) - Sony Corp is nearing a deal to buy out Telefon AB LM Ericsson's stake in their 50:50 smartphone joint venture, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday citing people familiar with the matter.
The joint venture's two parent companies have regularly discussed the nature of Sony Ericsson's ownership structure, according to the report. It said the talks were ongoing and could break apart at anytime.
Ericsson and Sony declined to comment on the reported talks.
"We have a long-term commitment to our joint ventures," said an Ericsson spokesman.
Many analysts say Japan's Sony needs to assert control over Sony Ericsson if the venture is to recoup market share in the cut-throat world of smartphones.
Sony and Ericsson's joint venture, formed in 2001, thrived after its breakthrough with Walkman music phones and Cybershot cameraphones, both of which leveraged Sony's brands.
But it lost out to leaner rivals at the cheaper end of the market, and its share of total handset sales has dropped to below 3 percent from more than 9 percent at its peak.
"A buyout would make a lot of sense for Ericsson as I believe their share in the joint venture is worth to them between zero and minus 1 billion euros ($1.33 billion)," said Bernstein analyst Pierre Ferragu.
"Whatever price they agree on, it would be a positive for Ericsson," he said.
Shares in Sweden's Ericsson gained further on the report and closed 6 percent higher at 69.20 crowns on Thursday.
A full takeover of the venture would boost Sony's overall offering, which includes content, gaming devices, consumer electronics and even tablet computers, but is still missing its own smartphones.
"The buyout allows Sony to move development in-house and better integrate other products like gaming into newer phones," said Steven Nathasingh from U.S. technology research firm Vaxa Inc.
Last month at the IFA trade fair in Berlin Sony Ericsson's phones were presented inside the Sony hall, mixed with Sony's TV sets and new tablets.

Sony Is This Close to Paying $1 Billion for Full Control of Sony Ericsson
Sony sure had itself a day the other day, and rumor has it the tech giant may soon have itself all of the Sony Ericsson joint venture as well.
This according to a rumor reported by industry gaming pub Gamasutra, which reports Sony is oh so close to a $1 billion takeover of the mobile phone partnership that it currently shares a 50/50 deal with devices like the Xperia Play. That device, if you'll recall, bears the PlayStation brand and was 100% marketed to the masses as a game-playing device that happened to make phone calls.
But where would the acquired Sony Ericsson assets go? Again, according to rumor, the bits and pieces would be folded into Sony's PC and gaming wing as part of a streamlining maneuver to save cash and improve operations.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Play owners or otherwise, does this sit well with you? [Gamasutra]
its good for both!!
through this deal Sony can compete better with Samsung/Apple..
If sony can keep the employees who designed the arc ill be happy either way. It's a win win for the consumer

Well, I have mixed feelings about this. Before the merger, Sony was failing miserably in the mobile phone sector. Their phones were just not up to standard. On the other hand, Ericsson was doing pretty well. If I recall the last Ericsson phone was the T68m which was a hit (it was later renamed T68i after the merger). The joint venture, Sony Ericsson, struck gold between 2004-2007 with their Walkman and Cypershot phones. They were very, very late in offering a high end smartphone which came in the form of the X10 in March of 2010 with sub-par software but, great hardware. This was 3 years AFTER the iPhone hit the shelves!
So I am really not sure how Sony will fair if they drop the Ericsson in "Sony Ericsson"?
I think it won't affect so much Ericsson. Or I thinks they shoudn't. If they really buy, they should just add more features to the phones, but keeps the employees from Sony Ericsson. Just a name thing.
Will still be a loyal sony ericsson fan either way. My 1st SE was the t100. It had a blue screen. Lol.

Looks much better if Sony Ericsson is on the device and not just Sony imo

I agree. But, I do not think that they will keep it.
Do yo really think that sony-"we lock everything down and sue you if you unlock it" will continue down the path of helping devs and unlocked bootloaders that SonyEricsson just started walking upon?
I doubt it.
The name? Sony won't buy out Ericsson for anything less than a namechange. They won't pay billions just to keep label the product "SonyEricsson".
I think this is a good step for sony, but a very bad one for android.

SE offerred the first smartphone in 2002 or 2003 as P800 and than produced a range of top end smartphones until they lowered the bar with X2....
I doubt it will success, Sony always sells the brand name before the product.

Yes but, these were not popular or game changers. What I meant was the second surge of smartphones which started with the iPhone in 2007 and then the Android devices.

Well as for the iPhone it took LOOONG time for ANY company to respond and probably one of the first real success was HTC HD2. As for SE I don't agree, X1 was very impressive, just the legacy was not continued.
SE used to make great smartphones. The whole "P" series was somehow special (i owned p910i and p1i) and the p1i is still my all-time favourite SE. Then they released the first xperia which was a worth replacement for the p1i. It was even better than its main rival at that time the htc touch pro.
but then they decided to f**k it all up and released the x2.. and then the x10..
Now they seem to be on the right track though with the 2011 series.
i just hope that the takeover from Sony wont affect their future smartphones too much
I still have the P910a. That phone is a classic! Has a physical qwerty keyboard, jog dial and touchscreen. The best of all worlds! Also has one of the loudest speakers in the industry. The phone had horrific battery life though and SE's Symbian UI wasn't that good. I had the w600i. Did anyone ever own that phone? Remember the battery door flying out easily? LOL. SE quickly recalled the devices. Tried fixing it then discontinued it. I had the p990i. That was a disaster. Then I went on to own a number of walkman series devices. The best selling w810i which I still have. My fave was the w995a which died on me.
My fave cybershot phone is still the k790a, still have that too. I love the candybar style. I had the C905a. I went through a lot of SE devices. I have the Arc now. I was thinking about getting the X10a just in case the Sony Ericsson
name is no longer. What do you guys think? Am I crazy? Please go easy on your responses. LOL
Whatever happens, I hope Sony Ericsson makes a comeback.

Sony said in a press meet that it would discontinue the feature rich mobile range (like cedar, walkman, cybershot, satio and all like that) from september and would concentrate on and release only Xperia line of smartphones from here on!
They think that smartphone market has grown phenomenally and people are moving to the smartphone generation it seems!
Soon, sony would bring xperia's in every price range covering every budget user!
Do you think it's a wise move from Sony?
Leave your comments below,
Here's the link attached :

I think the decision to focus on the Xperia lineup was taken quite a while back.
It's all about mobile convergence. Technology has improved in leaps and bounds. Prices have fallen drastically. Smartphones are no longer a toy for the wealthy.
And let's face it, we're all humans. At some level, we all compare ourselves with others. People will want to see if their phone can run the same thing as the next person.
And to answer your question, yes, it's a step in the right direction. It was inevitable. The only question was when.

Though you maybe rite in certain situations, well..
Lets consider an example, you couldn't offer an Xperia smartphone within 5k and even though it comes out, it would be very very low powered and even making a call would be irritating wheras consider that SE Cedar does that brilliantly, though its not smart enough, who would want such a product?

What does "feature rich" mean???
Like a Cybershot phone made for primarily for camera and calling? would that be feature rich?
Or a Walkman phone made primarily for Music and calling?
EDIT: Ah, I just noticed this is India only where it's getting discontinued

If that's true, I wonder if sony is planning on releasing a smartphone to match a feature phone price point. In which case, it'll probably be a horribly slow one

well ..
I've a different opinion here ..
no matter in India or wherever ..
as " xtacy! " said ..
the problem in Sony ericcson is that they were telling " we will publish " we will do , bla bla "
and for example ..
x1 , released 1 year after the announcment !
It was about to be out in windows mobile , and then It's android I believe " not sure about if it's android , but I know It's out 1 year after the announcment "
also , the best thing in Sony is that their mobiles has an amazing prices compared to other companies , that's matching a GOOD and SUPER GOOD configurations compared to the price ..
but , come on ..
they are releasing " LATE " configurations .. the ARC S had to face Galaxy s2
while Arc s has a POOR Ram , and a lonely core processor , with a HIGH price once It was released ..
yes , none is like sony in Camera and Music " personal opinion "
but , yet we haven't seen a high ends device that fights the latest configured mobiles out there ..
no " TOP DEVICE " yet ..
and even if they plan to make one , It will be late , and won't face " TOP DEVICES " in it's time ..
and tbh , the new devices of Sony " Sony xperia s "
It looks ..... arghh ....
Just saying ....
special opinion , and I hope I don't harassment or match anyone or any company ..
-------------------------
wanted to to add ..
that the mobiles market is improving sooo fast , and Sony have to deal with it
Not by a LOT of devices ..
but by a REAL devices ..
Regards ..
You are rite at many situations.. If they can make WORKABLE budget phone tats enough though..!
Tats d real problem now

Dated October 2011

Excerpt:
"Nordberg said he sees Sony Ericsson eventually shedding its feature phones altogether, in order to become a smartphone-only company, a feat that he reckons will take place sooner than you might think. He expects this shift to be achieved by the mid-point of next year, (bearing in mind smartphones already account for 70% of Sony Ericsson's sales)."
One more dated January 2012

Excerpt
"In spite of these challenges, throughout 2011 we’ve shifted our business from feature phones to smartphones, and our Android-based smartphone sales in the quarter increased by 65% year-on-year. The Xperia portfolio, including the recently announced Xperia NXT series, will serve as a cornerstone of our smartphone lineup in 2012.”"

Nope, the world didn't love the Xperia Play. The sad reality is that the Xperia Play didn't sell well. That's the first reason why you haven't seen a Xperia Play 2.
Sorry, but it has been said tons of times. Sony doesn't want to develop a Xperia Play 2 because it would affect on the poor sales of the Playstation Vita. The smartphones have taken a big part of the handheld market on these past years, if they make a gamer smartphone, it would affect more to the Vita, wich has a lot of work to do against the sales of the 3DS. For now, Sony only wants one portable gamer device, the Vita.
You really think they don't know that there's people that would like to have an upgraded version of the Xperia Play? Of course they do.
Sorry dudes, but be realistic.

Thanks buddy.
But Xperia play is best in the world.
If you use it one time ,such as for NFS Most wanted,or Modern combat and the other games that optimised to this device, you can see that.
This device is awesome.but with low power hardwares.
And it's very shameful.
But your right about Sony's strategies.
But we have hope.and we want to say it to Sony, like ICS.

You should see the difference between what do you think and what people out there think. I love my Xperia Play too, and I am still using it as my main smartphone/portable gaming device since it came out on 2011, but the truth is that the Xperia Play didn't sell well and making a second one it's not interesting for Sony right now.
Believe me, I would even clap with my ears if a second Xperia Play were anounced, but as I said we have to be realistic and assume that it won't happen.
Agreed with the other people, i love my xperia play and use it as my smartphone/gamer device but this phone really does affect the sales of their other products so it's safe to assume they won't make another gaming phone sine it was a 'mistake'. Lets look at it, currently with the use of emulators, our xperia play devalues the Nintendo and Sony consoles (such as the ds and the psp).
Making a second xperia play will result in loss of profits for the company
I agree, xperia play is great device! My brother's play went broken(flex cable..) about 1month ago, ordered new cable and got flex cable today and repaired phone, and it works great . The only Playstation attribute the phone has (aside from the symbols on the buttons) is PS Mobile. Which has already appeared on several non-Sony devices.
While it would be nice to see an Xperia Play 2, I don't think Sony would want to make one seeing how poor the original's sales was.
Perhaps it would be better if Sony made a slide gamepad for their Z series phones? Similiar to that camera add-on they have.
I love the xperia play, usually i upgrade phones every year but when i got the xperia play i didnt want any other phone. But the undeniable fact is that the xperia play is gaining age and the ram and internal storage is too small. I would be overjoyed if Sony came out with a Xperia play 2. i would pre order it in a heartbeat! But as much as i try to stay loyal to Sony they just Dont listen or care about there users or how many petitions we throw at them. And they say the dont want to make a xperia play 2 because it will interfere with there Vita Sales THATS BS! the vita sales were Doomed from the beginning! i had the vita from the start and i traded that damn thing for a 3ds! horrible device! i would love a xperia play 2 100x better. but it might never happen unless sony grows a pair of ears!

Agreed, lol. I would ditch my Note 3 in a heartbeat if they released a Play 2 with Next Gen specs (not just high-end, but next-gen like ahead of the competition). They really don't need the vita if they have a Play 2 that can do all the same and more.
But I also have to disagree about the Vita being a horrible device. It's a beautiful piece of hardware. Only problems are the game deficiency here in the West and the poor UI integration.
