Conflicting info on apps to sd card process - G1 General

Can someone point into the right direction on doing the apps to sd card process? I downloaded Paragon and all the files and now I am wondering which link to follow? Sorry I tried another process and my G1 would just stay at the boot up screen

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512743 I am a little confused on this link? I have a 1gb card that is already formatted...in which order do I follow the steps?

You aren't giving us much information to go on. What build are you running? That method uses Unionfs, not all builds support that method.

As stated, we are going to need more information on the ROM you are running.
If you are using Cyanogen's Recovery, you can do all the partitioning from the Console.

JF 1.5 and JF Heros theme
I followed the steps on the link below to do the hero rom my G1, did the root, rom and then when I got to the apps to sd process, the phone just stayed on boot up with the G1 screen.

So I am still trying to do the apps to sd process

Well that's even more confusing, because you have mentioned two different ROM's with two completely different A2SD methods. JAC Hero uses automatic A2SD if you have an ext2/3 partition, so if you do you should be good to go. If you just want cupcake, I'd go with Cyanogen's build. Has everything JF1.5 does and more, but it also has automatic A2SD aslong as you have ext2/3. Hope that helped, please try to be more explicit

Sorry
My first on all this and it does get confusing when i try to do it.
I have a G1 that has been updated with the 1.5, i followed the steps to root, install a rom, I used JF files as I followed the link above...While trying to do save the apps to sd card process with the linda manger and trying to set the part on the sd card, something went wrong. it doesnt work for me, my G1 just stays on the G1 screen on boot up....so i had to reload the JF rom...
This is what I would like to do:
1. Do the apps to sd card process
2. Get the Hero rom on my G1
I am stuck on #1 before I can do #2

Ahh thank you, this clears things up.
Apps2SD is dependent on the ROM, so when you get A2SD on one ROM and want to switch to another you have to start again (not always, but that's besides the point ). So, forget about A2SD on JF, because you go to hero it will break.
What you need to do, is format the Fat32, ext3 and linux-swap, then install the Jac Hero ROM. Please ignore that Jac Hero video you linked to, it will just complicate things. After you have partitioned that card correctly, you also need to upgrade the SPL. This is risky, you could brick the device, but as long as you follow the directions you will be fine.
You have several options for formatting the card
1) Buying Paragon 9 for windows
2) Using a live Ubuntu cd
3) using the terminal in cyanogens recovery image
Easiest is using cyanogen's recovery image
you can find it here : here
afterwards format the card using the guide on the Jac Hero page

Ok I'm a newbie and sorry to be asking so many questions but I should format my sd card to fat32 and ext3 and linux-swap?
I have Paragon 9 for windows and would prefer to do it this way, so the sd card will have 3 parts?
And then I can just load the Hero Rom as you suggested?

I am so excited I have to give props to this link
Best link ever!!!!!!!!!!! Have Hero on my G1, its laggy but I am excited to put on the Mytouch when it comes out

This linked helped so much and I did the install in less then 10 minutes since all the other links were confusing me, I recommend this link for newbs like me....
I am amazed at the hero software its cool

Using Swapper to increase speed and preformance

I am a complete noob when it comes to phones, but i did manage to root my MyTouch3g using the tutorial from Unlockrz.com...anyways, i loaded up the dwang-1.12 ROM, and it is working quite fine. Waaaay faster than before. Now i have some questions though. I've seen lots of people talk about using apps like swapper or DroidSwap in order to speed up phone by using memory from their sd cards? idk if i got that correctly, but anyways, i would like a step by step explanation on how to use this feature. Thank you.
Also, another quick question, how do i know if my ROM is the latest version? i assume the phone doesnt check for itself, so any ideas where to check/get the updates? and would i have to delete everything on the phone? any help is much appreciated.
If you did it by the tutorial at Unlockr.com, then you should have the amon_ra recovery image already. What you will want to do is go to "Partition sd card", then partition your sd card. It'll ask you to set the swap, ext (which you won't really need unless you use ROMs like superD where app2sd is automatically set). By setting swap on your phone via recovery image, certain ROMs will detect your swap right away and use it, again like superD.
I don't know about dwang since I have never used it myself. However, maybe you should look into flashing other ROMs that are used for G1. Since you have a MT3G, you will be able to flash almost all ROMs that are made for the G1. The only bad part is that some ROMs use app2sd when MT3G users have enough internal memory to have a lot of apps on board without app2sd.
Also, MT3G users do not require DangerSPL when flashing G1 ROMs even with sense, eclair, or some other ROMs that require it. With that in mind, try the latest superD ROM which is posted on the G1 Development section or maybe cyanogenmod 5? Very popular these days introducing a new era for G1/MT3G with 2.1!
You may also use swapper from the market, and it'll automatically set it up for you if you select "swap on" from swapper. But I recommend partitioning regardless because with swapper, every time you boot, you have to apply it again.

things have moved on a lot..a little help please

Hi,
last time i came in here unhappy with my stock HD2 on tmobUK android was just emerging on SD, now i came in here the other day WP7 is available as NAND and so is android....things seem to be a little confusing now, quite a few of these great ROMS are from people whos first language is not english so its quite hard to sometimes understand what they are explaining so i would be greatful if someone could answer somes questions, i have tried to read threads as best i can but some of them, well most actually are well into the hundreds within hours.
1) A lot of chefs describe NAND and SD, i know the difference between the two, but then they get mixed with magldr and NAND with ext4 etc etc..basically i want to flash the phones software to my NAND, i am assuming this is the best way to have it running at its optimum ?..so if i do this why would i need ext4 partions on the SD as well ? whats the benefit of it ?
2) i have also noticed that you can scan a barcode and have a link download a new rom to your phone and flash it, could i do this with ANY rom straight over the top of another without question ? and everything will be as it should be.
3) Does each ROM need to be set up in a different way?, this partly answers the previous question.
4) i flashed WP7 to my NAND (i think)..i was not happy with it and i had magldr installed, i just formatted my SD card to fat32 popped it back in and followed instructions to put [Feb 01][DL DesireZ v3.4][DL Data2SD/Ext4 v2.6][Nand/SD/MAGLAR] on to it.... it took me into magldr and told me to do a few things...did this flash to my NAND ? and did it do what was needed to the SD card regarding format or was it up to me to make certain changes to the SD card myself ?..the phone works and i can make calls, but all the apps that are stated to be in the ROM are not there, i cant find any GPS stuff and when i go to market place itsays its downloading an app but i can never see it.
As you can see i really am quite discombobulated with all this...i would love a easy reading guide that explains everything from A-B and all the terminolgy.
Thanks.
1. Many of these Android roms would swamp the entire memory of the EU HD2, so a workaround is to have partitions on the sd cards to store apps and data, leaving the system to run on NAND. When you update your rom, you just flash the system files and all app and data remains on the sd card.
2. The QR code just allows you to download the rom to your phone. You would still need to flash it AFAIK. (Heven't tried one of those yet). There are basically 2 types of NAND Android roms. One type use the more conventional flash type where you run an exe (daf.exe) from the usb flasher option on magldr. The 2nd (more recent type) packs the roms as zips which you can download and copy to your sd card and then using Clockwork mod, you can flash the rom directly from your sd card. This also allows you to take full backups, try another rom and if you don't like it you merely restore the rom.
3.Each rom and each dev has their own way of building these roms, so you will need to read carefully regarding what to do wrt sd card partitions etc.
4. Flashing WP7 and the Android rom via magldr would have installed the rom to NAND. You would need to partition your sd card yourself prior to flashing the rom. There are tutorials on how to partition the sd card to give you more help.

1) MAGLDR is nothing but kind of a bootloader. You can select how you want to start your ROM. AD SD or NAND or also now you can back up ROMS with MAGLDR... SD ROMS use haret.exe method. NAND uses DFT.exe method. there is another way called Clockwork MOD which uses .zip method.
Differences:-
SD Method: you have winmo 6.5 on NAND and android on SD card.
NAND Method: you install android on NAND itself.
Clockwork MOD: you install android on NAND but the benefits include you can backup your whole ROM in the actual state and flash it back later... So you can try different ROMs without worrying about installing apps and adjusting settings on the ones you like.
ext4 is a type of partition used by system. you can use the ROM which supports APP2SD and put your apps on ext4 partition.
2) As for the barcode ones. I am not sure how that works, but deffinately not as easy as you are thinking...
3) All the NAND roms use DAF.exe method so you do not need to worry about setting up the ROMs or anything. It does it for you. But some NAND roms have capabilities for APP2SD, in that case you might have to format your SD card in some particular way (explained in the threads always) to get ext2/3/4 partition to use app2sd.
4) you can flash WP7 only on NAND as there is no other way to do it for now. As for the new build you used, it has more than 1 versions. SD and NAND. If you followed the instructions for NAND and used DAF.exe to install it, then the ROM is already set up for you on NAND. Now the build you used had data2sd option and you can format your SD card as the author has said to use app2sd functionality.
One more thing, mostly TMO US users do not need app2sd as they have enough space on their phone. So if you are TMO US user, you can opt your self out from that headache.
Hope this helps. Just for the clarification, I am also a newb... I tried my level best to answer your questions...
QR codes are just text, in this case a URL. Instead of making you type the URL on your phone, you can just scan it with a special app, and get taken to the URL. Nothing more.
Thanks guys...the fog is clearing a little now...just a few reiterations..
So if i opt to flash to NAND, is it flashing it to the NAND upon each boot or is it written once and thats it, it seems to take a little while longer to boot these ROMS on NAND than a stock ROM..so for instance, if i was to remove the SD card after shutting down the phone and then start it up again, would it not boot because its looking for the ROM on the SD to put into NAND ?...i understand that running from the SD card it just boots from the SD card.
So basically the last ROM i installed, as i did not pre setup the partitions on SD card, FAT32/1024mb ext4/512mb ext4 and went on to flash the rom it has ONLY flashed the ROM WITHOUT the apps and everything else it was supposed to have pre installed already ?...so i have now setup my SD card and i am going to follow through again from scratch and hopefully have the ROM running with all the said apps.
My SD card being setup FAT32 / 1024 ext4 / 512 ext4 doesnt seem to be a lot of space to store apps on the ext4 partitions, what data goes on what partitions...and do i HAVE to have the ext 4 at the stated sizes ?
Thanks again guys for your input, you have all been really helpful.

If you use NAND then you can start your phone without SD card. The build is on NAND(ROM). Where win6.5 used to be originally. You do not HAVE TO partition your card. You can use whole card at FAT32 and store all your data on there. But if you choose, you can give some storage space as ext2/3/4 partition and store your apps in that partition. The benefit is you can free some space from your phone. When you boot your phone for the first time, it will be in original state. Then you can install apps from the market. These apps will be going to your phone's inbuilt memory by default. But you can use some apps to move apps from your phone storage to ext4 partition. But be aware that after you move your apps to SD card you have to have SD card in all times or those apps will not work when SD card is not there. As far as the size of ext4 partition is in question, 1024 MB is more than enough. As you will have some space on your phone and 1024MB on ext4. I would say if you install more apps than that, then you phone will be laggy like hell. ext4 partition size should not matter according to me.

^ Agreed. Don't do Apps2SD if you don't really need it. It's another possible source of problems (I've had my fair share of system crashes with A2SD on my ol' Magic, and the biggest problem was that there was no way of backing stuff up - stuff probably got more reliable nowadays though), it's not ideal for your SD card and speed isn't optimal either.

Very confused user........HTC HD2 + MIUI

Hi guys,
I have read this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1021837
I am using a HTC HD2 (international version)
I would like to know if it's possible to do the following?
- boot MIUI (http://www.miui.com/download.html) from SD card
From what I have read about MAGLDR, it seemed that I can copy MIUI to SD, and select option 2 in MAGLDR...........
Quoted:
Option #2
Boot AD SD, this will in the future allow you to boot Android from your SD card, but as for now it is not working just yet. This option also allows you to boot other Android specific software such as Clock Work Mod Recovery(CWM) that you have placed specific files for on your SD card. This option is not really needed for CWM as you no longer have to place files for it on your SD card you can flash it straight to NAND.
But it seemed that I need to burn MAGLDR into my phone, which I am afraid of bricking it............
Could someone let me know if I have the whole concept wrong?
Is it possible to run Haret after booting into Win6.5 to run MIUI (http://www.miui.com/download.html) from SD?
i think these tutorials answered by questions............but still a bit afraid to brick my phone..........
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-magldr-and-how-to-install-and-use-it-on-htc-hd2/
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-boot-android-from-sd-card-of-htc-hd2-with-magldr/
You can boot Miui in Winmo via SD. (using haret)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969661
If you follow the instructions, you probably won't brick your phone by installing magldr.
I didn't want to use MIUI in SD format as no1 is doing it now:

SORRY I will stop to release any MIUI mods , including SD/MAGLDR version, owing to some unhappy things, check here:http://www.miui.com/thread-59240-1-1.html

Sorry, noob question............
check which thread?..............
I've burnt the 400MB version...............
The thread of the rom you are trying to install.
Oh! Okay, I thought making it a bigger size will allow it to have more access to disk space for it's OS + programs, okay, I'll look into this area
How bigger the CWM partition, the bigger the OS space, which you can't use for apps.
But I can choose to install apps in SD card?
A closer look @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11894125#post11894125
and I figured that it's running MIUI from SD which is not what I wanted?
I want it to flash into my NAND...............
That one is running from NAND. Follow his tutorial to get it running.
hmmmmmmm, okay.........let me try it again...........
Was doing the CMW thingy,
It failed with:
USB Init Failed...........
The thing is I have 1.3 of CMW, and the tutorial wants me to flash a v1.2 of CMW
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=898913
Eelkede, from his post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11894125#post11894125)
can you tell which size of CMW should I flash?
I might go here to reflash the correct size (v1.3 instead of v1.2)
btw, I used this to help me flash..............
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...kmod-recovery-on-android-htc-hd2-with-magldr/
150 mb is enough (you can edit it to a lower number, but let's just start normal)
Follow the Instructions you posted.
Put the .zip of the ROM on your sd card
Reboot phone, open the CWM (AD Recovery).
Select: Install Zip from sd card, find the .zip, install. Let it boot (it can take a while, just leave it).
Optional: Install (same way as rom) Language pack, reboot.
Done.
Oh! I used http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...kmod-recovery-on-android-htc-hd2-with-magldr/
and flashed to 250MB and it's working now!
One thing I noticed; I was using Win6.5 + loading MIUI from SD using Harret, and this is faster than the one I had loaded in NAND..........
You mean it loads faster? or does it handles faster (in android)?
Could be, always reboot a few times before making a final judgement. You can try overclocking your device.
Glad I could help, have fun with MIUI on your device!

MIUI Nook Color 1.9.16 on SD Card?

I have searched diligently and have yet to find specific instruction for creating a bootable SD card for my NC with MIUI Nook Color 1.9.16 (or any version of MIUI for that matter).
I am currently running a fully rooted version of 1.3 on the emmc and "all is well" and I need it left that way so as to continue having access to "in store reading" which I use quite a bit.
Have previously had CM7 and Phiremod running both internally and on an SD card at various times and tried to do a previous version of MIUI on the card using the same process without any luck.
Thanks in advance.
You can use verygreens method here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Important part is to rename the miui zip like this -
'How to update to a new build:
put the new build you want to try on the first partition. (the name must be update-cm-*.zip or cm_encore_full*.zip or just update-*.zip)'
..and it should work fine
cheers,
Many thanks as that did the trick!
Loaded and running from SD card.
It installed/is using the new Market interface (3.1.3?).
Where are/is "My Apps" as I do not seem to be able to find it.
D/L Netflix and it runs just as it should but the soundlevel at max is quite a bit lower than on rooted 1.3.
Free Koi living wallpaper looks beautiful.
My Apps - strangely there isn't one, but this works nicely -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154299
Sound level - Download nook tweaks from market and change settings in that
Cheers,
What did you rename the MIUI file? I've tried it a couple different ways and checked the MD5's, but keep getting errors. Unless my SD card has been corrupted somehow (I used it for other SD boots before this, so not too likely), I can't think of anything else causing the problem.
Hi. I tried putting the MIUI zip in the root of the sd card and booted into recovery as stated. It was renamed as one of the cm7 updates and installation went as per normal. However, when I did boot up the nook was stuck looping the MIUI animation and did not finish. What did I do wrong?

Maybe just didn't wait long enough... the first boot takes a long time since the update script clears cache and dalvik cache.
Of course... this is just a wild guess since you didn't provide a whole lot of information... more information may yeild different feedback.

What kind of information? My nook color originally had the latest CM7 nightly on the sd card. I followed verygreen's method when I installed that. I used the NC normally. Then, I followed this thread and applied verygreen's method. I downloaded the MIUI rom from the miui thread, renamed it like the cm7 nightly zip ("cm_encore_full-253.zip") and put it in the root of the sd card. I put the sd card back in and booted via recovery. It installed and shut down. I turned it on again, and reached the MIUI globe thing. It was looping and stuck there for 30 minutes.
I've been thinking of trying miui.
If anybody has got.it running from SD please give the step-by-step procedure for the rest of us.
Thanks

I hate to revive a dead thread, but I have been trying everything I could read or download.
I am using the Size-agnostic installer from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
I am trying to flash MIUI 1.9.16 (MIUI.us_encore_1.9.16_Eng_Deo_ZipA_Signed_andmer) (http://goo-inside.me/miui/encore/)
I successfully installed CM7 to this Sandisk Class4 16gig microSD. Every time I try to flash MIUI, I re-burn the size agnostic card image, copy over the cm7-renamed MIUI ROM, and boot.
The installer seems to work, just like my CM7 installs. Then, when I try to reboot, it goes back to the installer (linux penguin at the top, goes through the motions of trying to flash another rom, when not finding anything, it shuts down).
I know I am missing something simple.
Am I to install CM7, then MIUI on top of it (without reburning the card)? Am I just using an SD-incompatible ROM? For those who were successful, where did you download the ROM from?
I know I have lots of questions, I hope you guys see my effort (that I don't just want someone to give me a quick fix), and I thank you in advance for your help.
Kind regards!

I'm certainly no expert, but I have flashed two different versions of MiUi to micro SD cards adn then worked fine. You do not need to do i over CM7. Like you, I prepared a clean SD and used the size agnostic procedure. I renamed the MiUi file to some that started with update-cm-
I got my MiUi file here:
http://roms.miui.us/
I used a program called SD Formatter to format the card.. then I used the 1.3 version installer. I sometimes had problems using winimage to create this sd card . You have to select the drive letter for the sd card and then use the "restore" choice on the menu.
David, thanks for your response. I had already wiped it and installed CM7, but when I saw your post, I gave MIUI one last try. I downloaded from that site, and BAM, it installed perfectly! Thanks heaps!

I have a brand new Nook Color the Software Version (in about my Nook) says 1.2.0. what is the easyest way to go about rooting? is there a specific version of CM7 that I should use? What is the best rooting method or system to use? I am totally new to all this so some step by step instructions or detailed informatio would be great!!! Thanks for all you guys help!!!
There are several decisions you need to make before you start. Do you want to have dual boot (meaning that you can switch between stock rom and another rom of your choosing? In these case you would be running the non stock rom from the sd card. Or, do you want to go full non stock rom (emmc)? There are different methods for each.
After you decide this, you need to decide which custom rom you would like. The most used are CM7, phiremod and MIUI. CM7 is the most update one and has a lot of following and development.
If like you mention on your post you are looking at using cm7, then I suggest you start with the latest stable version 7.1 (which was released a couple of days ago). You can find the files and instructions in this post and the detail instructions here
Hopefully this can help you, you could also look around in the android development section in the forums for further info and/or wait for more detailed info from more experienced rooter than me
Thanks for the Advise/ information, so if I go dual is it very complicated to switch from one to the other? is there an advantage to being able to switch back and forth? I currently have a 2gb sd card that should be big enough right? Once again thnks for the help..........
Does anyone else have input or feedback???
Just last week I installed CM7 on an SD card in my Nook Color. It's been great so far. I figure I'll try it on the SD card for a while before I do anything more permanent like installing to the internal memory.
When you install to the SD card, you boot back into the "stock" OS by just removing the card.
As for the size of your SD card, I think 2GB is large enough, but that depends on how many apps, etc. you plan to have on it.

I would not recommend doing that. The Nook card slot is a little fragile and excessive swapping will likely damage it. Mine gave out and I rarely remove the card as I have CM7 on the eMMC and only use the card for backups and upgrades. I had a hell of a time restoring the stock ROM so I could return it under warranty. If you are going to run from the card, set it up for dual boot so that you just pick which ROM you want to use when you boot up.
