Any seen a program that will disable automatic data roaming? If not any one wanna develop it?? Seems like a useful program to have especially when you're traveling and don't want to pay the crazy roaming fees if you accidentally use your data connection.
Any one? Ideas or software recommend?
I'm also trying to find a program that will automatically disconnect / disable data while roaming.
I live near the border of 2 countries and even though I don't pay roaming for calls, my data is not included in roaming which makes it expensive.
at the moment I use nodata modaco to manually disable my data when I'm going over the border, but then I also have to have the phone service manual to avoid roaming without knowing it and being charged for data .
this is annoying because when I lose coverage I have to select it again manually, which happens a lot living near the border.
thank you very much, dan
PocketMax PhoneAlarm (http://www.pocketmax.net/phoneAlarm.html) can do this through profiles. I use this feature and it sure makes travelling abroad a lot easier...no need to worry about remembering to disable data services...
thank you for your suggestion. the problem is that, due to the area where I live, I constantly change from my home network to the roaming one, even without knowing (when the service is in automatic mode). if I use profiles to disable my data with phonealarm I would have to change them all the time depending whether I'm in my home network or not. but some times, the network changes even on this side of the border.
I would have thought that some kind of mortscript would be able to disable data as soon as I moved to a foreign network without having to depend on profiles. therefore , I would not have to worry what network I'm with, because at home data would be active, and as soon as roaming kicked in, data would be disabled. thank you, dan

Hi!
I am looking for a tool to prevent data roaming ONLY: I tried Modaco Nodata but with this one you only can deactivate the connections permanentely...
I am here nere the border so sometimes the network is switching over to the one of the next country. I dont want to switch to "manual" network selection because i want to stay reachable... on the other hand, direct push / data connection should only be active in my home network.
Does anyone of you have a similar problem or a solution for this one?
I set my network to home only and when I travel to Michigan I use nodata to keep data turned off... ever since I haven't received any data roaming charges and my data service is on without worrying about roaming... the downside to this is I cannot take advantage of the extended calling area but oh well if I need to call to US with phone I turn data off and then switch to normal mode....
Question for North American users of SGS2.. can you use wifi even if you have no data plan or you turned off your 3g? I have heard several people who can't use wifi if they don't turn on their 3g data plan. Hope this is not the case for SGS2...
When you're connected to wifi your data plan isnt used, and you don't need one either.
yes you can only use wifi and have no data plan. you can still leave the phone on the 3g network, just for voice calls only, so turn off mobile data.

I have an Evo running CM7 on the SRDO plan, my phone is very rarely used to make or receive calls. I would like to be able to turn the cell radio off while keeping the mobile data active, if this is possible. Please let me know if there is a way to do this, preferably with a toggle widget but I'll consider a more complex solution if need be. Thanks in advance.

You can turn mobile data off and have the phone on but I've never heard of a way to turn the phone off and use mobile data.
Unless its pure wifi and which you CAN use in airplane mode.
..
You can change how often it polls the towers but data and voice are done with the same radio. It just switches over to 1x instead of 3g to talk.
Hi all - I'm on the cheap Tmobile plan (500 mg/month) but I really don't need 4G that much. Ideally I'd like 4G to only run when in the web browser, youtube, etc - when I really need fast speed.
If I'm in google music, facebook, reading email, etc - I really don't need FAST speeds - 3G is more than fine.
Anyway to set up 3G as the normal radio, then auto-toggle to 4G when specific apps open?
Ideally I'd only like to use the fast 4G when needed, like downloading videos, youtube, etc.
I don't remember if you need to have your phone unlocked for the menu to be enabled but it's under System settings -> Tethering & networks -> Mobile networks -> Network mode.
You can also run the *#*#INFO#*#* code -> Phone information.
You may want to check with T-Mobile if switching to GSM mode will stop you from using up your 4G allowance (if that's what you're trying to do). I've seen no indication to that.
Re-reading your post, there is no 3G mode anymore, since they upgraded 3G to 3.5G which they call 4G. So your choices are either GSM (2G), WCDMA (4G) or LTE.
All data usage counts against your quota, even 2G. Your phone is not going to use more data simply being on LTE. The proper way to manage data usage is to disable auto-sync and turn off mobile data entirely as much as possible.

I use (2g-3g on/off) widget from the playstore. It places a widget/shortcut on your home screen, that takes you to a settings screen that allows you to toggle between 2g, 4g, and lte. Works great on my T-Mobile G2.
tasker, how dunno but look into it

I think if you install the Secure Settings plugin you can use Tasker to automate it.
Doesn't GravityBox have the smart radio option? I didn't have much luck with it at first, but seems to be better now.

Okay so for Tmobile, no matter how I get the first 500mg of data (3G,2G, etc.)- that's when the 4G shuts off? I thought I might be able to "save" 4G until I really needed to use it.

That's correct. Also, 4G doesn't really shut off. You will still be on LTE or HSPA+ when available, but the speed will be limited. The system doesn't actually kick you off 3G/4G it just reduces your speed.

Okay that makes sense - so I'll still be on 4g (orlando) but just throttled at 128k or less. kk thanks
