I was reading somewhere on here that people have tried to use there full hsdpa speed through there Vario II over bluetooth and they reported they cant get anywhere near the speeds (500-600k max)
Well i have just got my new IBM Thinkpad with inbuilt bluetooth and ive tried it and i have just dont a speed test on many different sites and got 1.7mb on everyone!
It really is lightening fast and very very useable. Im very impressed.
Hi all. Sorry to start another thread about wifi on the Universal, but there seems to be no resolution in any of the others;

... and these are just the recent ones. It seems there are a lot of us having problems with wireless range/reception. I think the basic questions we're asking are:
1. Is it a problem with the router/ap or the phone?
2. If it's the phone, can it be resolved with a software fix?
3. If it's the phone, is it another problem in the vein of SD cards (some work, some don't, depends on your phone)?
4. Do any of the more experienced members have these issues, and if so, what did they do to overcome/circumvent them?
I know i'm asking a lot here, but I think we would be grateful of even a sticky thread saying "There's nothing you can do about poor WiFi range" - at least then we'd know.
Many thanks in advance,
Gurney Man
Okay - might be onto something...
As stated in another thread, I just installed Radio 1.18 to see if that'd help. Uni said I had a Wireless connection to my network as I was rebooting it... i'm in the other room, so that's promising. However, I now get a nice SDDaemon error on boot...
More on this exciting story as it happens folks.
*edit*
Next on the list - ActiveSync has decided it doesn't like the phone now. No contacts sync-ing... Ugh.
I think it becuase if speed
i checked the AP(router) when the ppc(universal)connects to it,and i realized that it connects only with 11mbps speed even when the signal is low but with laptop i can connect with other speed like 5 2 1 mbps i think if we could configure universal to connect with 1 mbps we can get the most range. does someone knows how to set the speed to 1 mbps?
Radio upgrade doesn't seem to have helped.
It's an idea at least. Could we not change the connection settings on the router itself? Probably a daft question, as I imagine we've tried the Universal at other APs and still got poor reception.
Continuing my voyage of discovery, after upgrading to Radio 1.18, my comm's manager doesn't work properly, and wireless still doesn't work very well. Should I try an earlier Radio version (1.15) before I put all of my contacts n' settings back on the device?

My friend have a nokia N80 and I did some tests, some time ago.
The reception is better. for example universal couldn't connect to wireless AP and N80 it's able to surf on Internet. At the same distance.
What I remener is that the N80 was able to connect at slow perfermormance , connected at 1Mbps and Universal was 11Mbps or nothing...
As you now slow performance is better distance... But I can't tell this to my universal , it always try to get higher performance and not higher distance...
do you know any solution to get connected with 1 Mbps?
Louder!
lol - still don't think we'll get any help. I assume now that there's no fix to this issue. The senior members here jump all over solveable problems - they haven't even corrected our grammar
Regards
Success!
okay, so this is probably I couldn't connect. All I had to do was change the settings on the router to only use wireless B, and I got reception. I felt ballsy after that, so played with the channel settings too, and guess what - changing the channel gave me even better reception. I would recommend any of you guys having the same problems to tinker with your router settings - if you don't have a 'puter wired to the router be careful, you might end up having to hard reset it, but otherwise go for it!
... now to reflash everything and get all the settings back... and get a better browser.
Regards
and then...
when I re-flashed, I assumed radio 1.18 was the cause of the issues I was having, aside from the wifi. Re-flashed to 1.15... no wireless. Going back to 1.18 again. Sheesh.
is 1.18 better than 1.15 in wifi?
I think so...
I seem to get an extra couple of metres with 1.18 - still not exactly the free roaming wireless I was hoping for, but better than just putting the device next to the router to get a weather update for Spb and nothing else.
Very Strange. Mine work well
Radio 1.18. WM6 2.02.02
2 walls (30 cm). No poblem. I've not encoured such problem. (thanks god). In open space, I've got even 50 meters reception (from hotels). So, I'm kind of an alien here no?
Regards,
Cristian Nica
i thought 1.18 was weeker....
nlcluigi , did you always have that good reception, or did something fix it?
Hallo Folks,
I think my WiFi-Connection on my brand new HTC Blackstone is very slow. But I had the same problem with my older tytn II.
I have to say, that I am rather hazy about the speed one can achieve...
Here you can get a 10/100/2000 MB testfile: http://www2.qsc.de/dltest/
So I will start and will update this list:
me: 533 kbps
bbonzz: 1750 kbps
Please say how fast you are connected with the internet, so we can except the internet connection.
p.s.: Sorry for my bad english!
tested two days ago with 1mb file -->1750 kbps
Can you tell me what channel you are using.. perhaps it has something to do with it. I use one (next used channel is 11) and alternative for testing 13, but its the same!
11. But i connect to a 20mbps lan, so maybe you have a slower connection hotspot
hmm... i have 16 mbit, so somehow something is wrong
could it have something to do with different radio or maybe i have a different network stack in my win mob 6.1 ?
Have you already enlarged the connection window via HDTweak and enabled WlanG? (last one i'm not sure makes any difference, but surely doesn't harm)
Yes - i have checked the first thing and applied the second thing u mentioned... no differenze
I now tried duttys latest rom... but still the same
The page you linked to redirects to the homepage.
I tested on www.ozspeedtest.com
On both the 600KB and 3MB files I got exactly:
1.63MBps
My internet speed is:
20Mbps
Do you have any problems with the wifi connection?? Because i have a very pour reception all the time, and my dad with his ipac has always best reception..
Any bug in the software.. or does the wifi of the TD2 just suck?

It Sucks
My old HTC Artemis was (a bit) better, my gf's iPod Touch is a lot better, an old HP HX4700 was the best I ever had, it beat laptops.
Try experimenting how you hold it, if you're holding it over the antenna it'll be worse.
did you try setting power saving in Performance Mode (instead of default Best battery)?
Try to check out about "Radio" rom version in Developmet forum. The one come with first D2 is really no that good....
Not sure which version is recommended because each version can do good and bad to your radio perfarmance (for example GSM and 3G). you can try each of them once you do HSPL
Sorry for my bad english
¸i have the wifi problem too. for example when im on my work and have nothing to do i scan area for wifi and trying to surf little. wit my n95 i had 3 bars on some connection, but on td2 i only have one and that sucks bad
Wi-Fi works great on my TD2.
At home, at the office and at friends places I have no problems at all.
All different kinds of encryptions, channels and standards...
Works beautifully.
Stock ROM btw...
I have set it to Performance mode and i use Udk's manila 2.6 ROM (see signature).
I have 4 bars only when i'm like 1 or 2 meters away from the acces point
My version stuff:
OS Version: 5.2.21840 (21841.5.0.60)
Manila version: 2.6
Rom version: 2.08.502.1 (60647) WWE
Radio version: 4.47.25.31
Protocol version: 61.35tc.25.28U

That's exactly my experience too. And, it's not just the number of bars. The wifi really does have less range too - those bars seem quite an accurate indicator.
wi-fi antenna on htc sucks. really bad hardware, way bellow of nokia or other devices
Same experience. My router is 8m away from me, 1 wall between mobile(me) and router. Connection is lost every 2 minutes. And only 1 bar signal. I dont have powersavings on and mode set to performance, not batterylife.
Also outside my house i find 4 wifis with my Omnia, 5 Wifis with my N95 and 3 Wifis with my Touch D2 in same moment.
My ADSL connection can do 13Mb download & 1Mb upload, all computers achieve (also on wireless) this using either speedtest.bbmax.co.uk or speedtest.net. However my HD2 can only achieve 3.5-4Mb max using the same sites, upload is represented correctly. It seems to fly up very quickly then back down, for upload it takes a few seconds to check the speed for both sites. I used Opera 10 (Flash Lite 3).
Also on HSDPA it can only do ~0.5Mb but when tested in dongle it achieves ~2.5Mb, upload is represented correctly (1Mb) for both Vodafone and O2.
I've also tried the wireless N hack but this hasn't improved things.

There is no solution. HD2 performance on WI-FI are just bad. People don't care. The only justification they can give to this is "it's just a phone". Amen.

That sucks, my mates Omnia is also pretty bad on WiFi so I assume this is a WinMo problem?
Also I meant just O2 for 0.5/2.5 HSDPA thing, just checked Vodafone and got 3.5Mb / 1Mb.
Also doesn't the "it's just a phone" thing kinda wear off when you cross the £500 mark?

I don't know. Maybe it's WinMo but I don't have other Windows Phones to make comparisons.

I agree but these are the people that appear here when you criticize their toy.
Maybe enabling wifi-n will speed it up. I'd at least give that a try.
Also, I did a test, and I get exactly what I get on my laptop which is 5644kbps
I have been having issues with HSDPA on my HD2 for some time. I am with T-mobile UK... what I have found is that when I hard boot/reflash a new rom... HSDPA is full speed. However something triggers what I can only think is a GPRS only mode, at first I thought I had installed apps that affected networking but I don't believe that is the case now.
Yesterday for example I was in a shielded building and had no reception whatsoever... when I came out I could not connect to T-Mobile data so restarted my HD2 a few times then setup data again.... I am connected now but internet connectivity is really slow, I generally stream music but I can't do this and I may as well forget about YouTube.
I have spoken to T-Mobile about this in the past and they said there are no restrictions on my account. I also know (havng proved it before) that by going through the hassle of a hard reset/new rom flash HSDPA with work again.
I wonder if this is IP related but I am not sure how to check the configuration on Winmo. I also am unsure how/where to do a speedtest (Speedtest.net needs an updated version of flash).
Managed to get it sorted out.... sent the Tmobile settings from the Tmobile website to my phone. Then in my ROM (OMEGA) there is a enable 3G mode.... This seems a bit flaky to be honest... Anyway I selected the new Tmobile internet settings option in Connections, then flicked the 3G setting in connection manager on and off a few times...
In the status bar, rather than "G" and a small "G" with reception meter both show as "H" (this will differ to the rom you have probably).... main thing is streaming is back again

I've generally found 3G to be faster than WiFi and even the ping in some situations on WM phones.
my phone also gets around 2 to 3Mbps on the speed test with the wifi.. 700 or so with hspda and 500 or so with 3g.
isnt this the max rate of the memory card? perhaps the phone itself is slowing down the results?

3G speed depends heavily on the mast tech level and how many people are using it.
