Roaming in my own country?? - G1 General

I just looked at my G1 (which has been flashed with the 1.5 jf developer phone release) and it says im roaming on Orange UK. I thought that I can only be on T-Mobile uk given my contract is with them. But most importantly, is it going to cost me money if it keeps switching to other networks or is it something the operators do anyway.

I don't know if it's the same on your side of the pond, but over here roaming like that isn't uncommon. And these days, typically doesn't cost anything. I probably spend nearly 50% of my time on AT&T rather than T-Mobile.
If you just saw it after flashing to ADP -- I bet the stock firmware had a preference for T-Mobile towers, but the unbranded ADP firmware selects whatever is strongest. Need to call your carrier to see if it will cost you anything.

You can force it to a preferred network -- Settings --> Call Settings --> Network operator.

Using GRPS abroad (T-Mobile UK)

Is there any way of knowing in which countries GPRS will work in? I've got a T-Mobile MDA Vario and on one or two occasions I wasn't able to get GPRS up and running in order to browse the net. Just wondering if it doesn't work in some countries or if that was a coincidence.
Isn't there a list of countries/companies which T-Mobile have roaming agreements with on the T-Mobile website ?
Yes but this only indicates where you can use the phone. My understanding is that this does not necessarily include GPRS/data availability or access.
Yes, just because you can roam does not mean you can use GPRS. I do not think that info is on www.gsm.org either. Drop an email to T-Mobile customer service if it isn't on their site.
Must admit I always buy a local SIM for data usage now that many operators have pre-paid GPRS.
GPRS abroad..
T-Mobile do have partners abroad - for the preferred network to use and cheaper calls - but that doesn't mean you will get any of your GPRS allowance wheilst roaming.
I have the Web'n'walk tariff , but my mobile bill was still over £160 when I got back after a week in Eire.
I think the GPRS / MMS data usage was at their standard roaming tariff.,, whatever that is.

Some examples
I couldn't use GPRS with O2 in UK (where T-Mobile wasn't available). I had no trouble with multiple carriers in Barcelona and always found T-Mobile itself in Frankfurt and Bonn. GRPS works in Paris (didn't note the carrier) and never worked with any of NINE partners in Taiwan last year.
prestonmcafee, thanks for the examples. Your visit to the UK must have been some time ago, T-Mobile exists here now, I think they initially came in the market a couple of years back when they acquired what used to be one to one, or whatever they were called.
Yesterday!
Sorry I wasn't clear, what I meant was that I couldn't get GPRS in the UK in the places where T-Mobile wasn't available; T-Mobile is usually available but not always. Victoria Station and Heathrow have places where T-Mobile's signal is so low that the automatic connection on a US T-Mobile phone connects to O2, and in this case, GPRS will fail.
Sometimes, but not usually, a manual connection would turn up T-mobile even when the phone had connected to O2.
I just returned from 5 weeks in the UK yesterday.
LOL

UK T Mobile phone in Orlando - GSM OK??

I have a UK T Mobile Vario, and am taking it with me on my Orlando holiday in a couple of weeks time. I am really wanting to use it to send / receive quick emails.
The plan is to connect to my email, pull down the mail headers and then disconnect. With the mail items I want to read, I go back online and pull the full message down.
I want to drop quick mail messages to friends and family back home, and give certain updates to people on items I have been asked to buy, make sure they are OK with prices etc etc.
There appears to be various mobile cariers in Florida, and am not sure which my phone will connect to when I turn it on, but I know how to manually select a network.
The question is this, the villa is in the Indian Ridge development in Kissimmee, so should I select a specific carrier to get data features, or will any of the available ones allow it?
Vario is Triband so USA is not a problem.
You may be better ringing Tmobile UK and asking them which carrier is cheaper for roaming data in the area you will be travelling to. If you add international option to your account before you go ?3quid or thereabouts, you can get cheaper roaming. It may be cheaper buying a sim in the US and connecting on the local sim.
Maybe our American forum users could suggest the cheapest PAYG options. including data.
I had no coverage problems with tmobile around Orlando earlier this year.
If all else fails, most of the hotels in the area seem to have free, open WiFi
and plenty of parking ;-)
i lived in orlando with t-mobile, and never had any problems with coverage

Roaming Symbol Problem

I just recently bought a Rogers HTC Magic, rooted the phone, and unlocked it. Everything seems to work completely fine. At the moment however, I seem to be having an issue with a Bell Mobility sim card. Bell's HSPA sim works fine, and I seem to be able to use voice and data ok, but the problem lies in that their seems to be a roaming symbol ("R") on my reception bar. Im using the phone in my local calling area which is somewhat misleading to me.
Im using MyHero 2.0.5 ROM at the moment. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks in advance!
Agreed
I'm doing the same thing. I'm running cyanogens roms and I get the same thing. Best I can tell is that this is normal on the magic. Just be careful if you live near the border like I do.
I figured this was normal too. I guess i'll try other SIM cards to see what they say as well, thanks!
Ya I also have this phone running on Bell, wish I could get rid of the roaming. It also asks if I want to connect once in a while too.
Shouldn't the romaing be dictated by the sim? I have a bell sim, on the bell network, why do I get the roaming icon? is there a way to change the phone so it doesn't think it's a rogers and not roaming or something?
Are you sure you have the Bell APN Settings and not the Rogers Settings in the phone?
Settings -> Wireless Control -> Mobile Network Settings -> Access Point Names
If it says Rogers you're Roaming on the Rogers Network.
I put in the bell APN. I don't think we can even roam on rogers network, wouldn't work. Either way, it's the Bell APN.
I don't have a clue as to the differences between Bell and Rogers sims... but I can tell you that my HTC Magic, on Rogers, with a Rogers sim (duh), running Amon_RA's most excellent RAv1.6.2H only shows roaming when actually roaming.
I was in the US yesterday and watched it flip from a Rogers tower to ATT. I was watching to make sure it was not using any data when roaming on a US network. The symbol, lockscreen info and the carrier listed in the status pulldown all were updated correctly.
It might have something to do with the ROM you are running. However I bet that given the phone came from Rogers, it has some carrier info buried somewhere that it is comparing to the carrier you are on (Bell) and triggering the roaming status.
If you disable data when roaming in the settings menu, what does it do? If it disables data, then the phone thinks it is roaming, which would support my carrier data mixup theory.
I will try a different rom on the phone. Unless someone knows for sure what I can do to fix this.
If you disable roaming there is no data, because once in a while it prompts to connect, if you say no, you get nothing. Sometimes my wife must accidentally hit no (its her phone, she probably says no cause shes not sure what it does). I just want to make it so she does not get the prompt ever (settings are all set).
I have a rogers HTC Magic (unlocked) I'm using a fido sim, it thinks its roaming as-well but I have only fido apn settings. It only roams with certain roms and radio's. I can use alot of roms eg. cyanogen,Hero HOFO 308,GYD 2.1.1 without roaming but when I update radio and flash cursorsense roms it thinks it is roaming. I have to enable data roaming in order to get a 3G signal. as a fido user I dial *#123# to see if I'm in my local zone zone. A fido tech rep told me that most unlocked phones indicate roaming because of the phones hardware programing. The hard programing of the phones checks the sim and sees that it is using a diff sim card and starts indicating roaming when in fact you are not. A rogers salesman also told me the same thing. He said as long as your carrier is displayed on your phone homescreen then you are good.
I have the AT&T Tilt, not running the AT&T ROM. I've tested a few different SIM cards on my phone and here's what I've found:
Rogers: Roaming works correctly. In Canada, no roaming indicator, in the USA, roaming is indicated correctly.
Telus & Bell (HSPA): Roaming indicator always on.
I've heard that this may be due to the SIM card listing more than one Mobile Network Code: 302361, 302653, 302657 (original Telus CDMA networks, not compatible with the phone or any kind of SIM-based network so it's uncertain why it would be on the SIM card), PLUS the HSPA network code 302880. It's possible that the phone is not reading that far into the list on the SIM and therefore does not know that 302880 is a home network.
Tilt 2 Roaming Triangle and telus
I'm on Telus and have a Tilt2. The original ROM that came with the unit didn't show the roaming triangle. I have attached some screen captures of the ROM. I've attached a copy of the registry (Remove the .cab it was the only way I could get it to upload).
I'm now running Jackos rom and it does show the roaming triangle.
Hopefully somebody can find where the settings are located and hopefully it's contained in the registry.
Have the same problem on the Stocks ROGERS 1.5 Rom. Sales associate said you should not get roaming charges since you aren't actually roaming and if you do, just contact your phone provider.
rogers htc dream unlocked now on roaming?
i also have a htc dream from rogers unlocked not rooted and my bell sims card works like my phone calls and my text but i can't get my data to work and when i click on the apns theres not thing and i am not able to adjust anything in there, if anyone can help it would be great, so pretty much the bell sims card works but i cant use my data and it says im roaming

If you aren't outside of Canada and you get the roaming symbol; they can not charge you roaming fees.
Roger and Telus PLMN Compared
I'm not sure if this will help,
I have attached a picture of the PLMN from a Rogers sim and a Telus sim
Maybe someone knows how to adjust the information on these lists.

The phone companies in Canada must be less uptight about unlocked/rooted phones
If you asked those questions to a t-mobile or at&t rep, they would straight up refuse to talk to you
American cell phone companies are still stuck in the "Ma Bell" mentality, where everything that touches their network must be under their control
anyone figure out a fix? I'm having these roaming issues as well on the bell network with unlocked at&t phone.
I have Same probleme Here, Bell on a AT&T Tilt 2 phone, Always get Roaming message.
any registry edit or mod available to make it work without these message ?
thks

I searched around to a fairly moderate extent and I have found many people with the same problem, yet I can't find any resolution to this issue.
I'm not even sure where the issue lays. Is it with the hardware/firmware? SIM card? Windows Mobile? Is it the rilphone.dll? or maybe some registry entry. Maybe it's on the Bell network side?
Someone told me they put a Rogers SIM into their Fuze and it didn't show up as roaming, yet when they put a Bell SIM in, it's back to roaming. So what's the difference between Bell and Rogers?
Here's a question for anyone who has this problem, when you boot android does it still show as roaming?

Is there any way to force roaming on Windows Mobile

I have a T-Mobile HD2, but T-mobile doesnt workin at my workplace. AT&T works so I was wonderning if I could force a roam. I've tried to manually connect to the network, but network registration fails. Anybody know anything?
Roaming is for countries other than your home country... no operator that I know of lets you roam to their competitors' networks... (apart from operators that own no physical network and have agreements to use other carriers' networks, in which case you can benefit from all... but that's rare).
But...
That is exactly the case with T-Mobile and AT&T. I got to school in Denmark, SC in the country. There I can roam on AT&T cuz theres no T-Mobile tower. When I got home its back to T-Mobile. The only thing I could say is that the roaming could be region or area specific. Could that be the case?
I guess the best way to know is to call TMO and ask...
I roam on AT&T just fine up here (Mendocino County in Northwestern California) in dead spots, and that's in-market where there are also T-Mobile sites. We're a former Edge Wireless market (AT&T Affiliate, taken over by AT&T in April of 2008), and all former Edge Wireless markets have this, we get to use AT&T and T-Mobile's network, I can force (instead of letting it automatically roam over) it to roam on AT&T if I want as well.
force roaming hd2
i have just purchased a hd2 i would like to know nore on this subject since i do not reside in a area that offers descent cell service... i know it is possible on a g1 (my last phone) but would there ve a way to do this on a wm 6.5 fustom rom?? or another ahdroid on for that matter i know nothing has been discissed in some time now on this thread but any help/redirectoon would br much appeeciated.... thanks. ps. sorry i should enable spell check.

[Q] All networks work except Three (UK) Help

Hi
Starting on EE. I have had my phone (GTI9505) unlocked from a shop and also had a code. The phone is unlocked and works with EVERY other network sim besides Three.
Three shows under my APN settings but all i get is no service then emergency calls only.
this has been happening for about a month now and only once (last night) did it show the network 3 before gong back to emergency calls only
ive tried 3 different three sims (coincidence) none have worked and the same 3 sims work in other phones. Did i mention that all other networks work?
ive tried changing the network mode and pressing automatic search under network operators. when I go to manual all i see is EE, O2 and Vodafone
i rang three to see if they blocked it and they assured me it was not blocked
i am on android 4.4.2, i9505XXUFNC9
How can i enter the service menu so i can have a play around with the settings/radio etc?
anything else i can do/try/flash?
You've probably just got no signal in your area. Three are probably the worst service for coverage. I've had no signal indoors for the best part of a month. Customer services just fob you off with "they are carrying out work in the area", which is not shown on their website. Absolute joke of a network. Soon as my contract is up I'm going back to tesco/O2.
