HI
Is it possiable to view a webcam image with MSN Messenger for pocket pc using Mobile 2003se.
I have looked at the tools option within the MSN Messenger software currently running om my XDA II with Mobile 2003se, & can find no option to receive a webcam call or sound?
Having searched the net on this issue, I have found mention of a program called Microsoft Portrait which appears to give this function to MSN Messenger, but although this is a microsoft product, which is currently downloadable, I am a little reluctant to try as it's dated 2004 ver 2.3.
I have also looked at upgrades for MSN Messenger for Mobile 2003se & there is a site which will upgrade the product via Activesync, but with no listing of what features are available, or version No. to check against.
(Is it actually possiable to identify version of MSN Messenger running under 2003se in some way?)
Has anyone gone through this route before who can help me?
mobile messenger dont support it currently
not that it would be possible to do it with a higher fps then
1 fpm == frame pr. minut
Thanks for the reply Rudegar
Have you seen this before;
http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait/
Please advise me of your thoughts.
had it installed once long time agoe
back then the camera of my himalaya was not supported
somebody talked about ms wanted to make support for it
if they had the camera stk
though
here is last i've heard about it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=22825&highlight=microsoft+portrait
and pretty much all i heard about it

Thanks for your time in advising me of previous activities on this.
May well give it a try myself now......I guess if anything developes in the future, it will manifest it's self via a "Mobile MSN Messenger upgrade"?
yes unless i'm misstaken then universal devices dont come with messenger and they seem to have to pay ms to get it
so that may indicate that newer versions of messenger will have more features
of cause i'm not sure tha they would release it for older non wm2005 devices
I guess a close watch is kept on MS to see if any new features appear at the following;
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/msnmessenger/default.mspx
It would be nice to be told of any new features are being made available?
I can find no reference to what new upgade features are anywhere, no version numbers or nothing?
Guess I will just have to run the upgrade & hope I only gain features & not loose any.......thats if anything happens at all.
Once again, thanks for all your help.
Hi,
I'm a very fanatic MSN Messenger User (wrote a few add-ons and helped on for example Messenger Plus!).
As a tech geek I also recently bought a T-Mobile MDA Pro, and am quite disappointed that it did not come with Pocket MSN pre-installed. An MVP assured me that it should come pre-installed, but it doesn't (and I blame T-Mobile ).
Although Agile and others are very good alternatives, I still believe the official client will be better, and refuse to believe otherwise untill I tried it
I know one method to get PocketMSN is to flash another ROM, like the I-Mate. However I don't think this is an option for a lot of people, as I think it breaks the warranty. Another method is to pay 14.95E to log in with a downloadable Pocket MSN, but as I have up to three addresses (some for testing purposes) and sometimes I need to troubleshoot some others, this is not an option either.
But I am not giving up! (yet)
I want to try if I can copy the files needed and get it to work anyway. I've already asked a friend with a HTC Wizard (MDA Vario) to help me on that, but I think it'd be better to copy the files from a Universal ROM.
So (finally ), I was hoping that someone could help me to browse the files present in the i-mate or qtek roms. Ideally I think the easiest would be by comparing the files in the i-mate, qtek, and mda pro roms, but as the mda pro ROM is unavailable, I think that'd be impossible
It comes preinstalled on the O2 ROM as well. Works fine, but lacks videoconferencing, regardless of built in hardware support...
Works fine? Do you have the problem where if you start it in landscape mode you only get a very small area of text until you flip the screen to potrait mode and back again? Or is that just me.... I have the o2 rom.

On the MDA Pro ROM it isn't installed... at all
i have JJ and it works fine, but times out and disconnects itself.
if you tell me what files I need to get for you, I will copy. i have no idea how to extract out of the source .exe, but have it if you can tell me what to do and how to do it, but suspect there are better gurus around than me to do this.
Guys
There ave been a few threads on this already. T-Mobile in the UK (branded as MDA _Pro) do not offer the msn software. Initially i was a bit dissapointed when i got my MDA, however when i discovered Agile messenger i was very happy.
Agile supports mulitple formats, ICQ, AOL, MSN etc.. but better still for a mobile device with a per kb download charge it uses way less bw than the windows version. I also was pissed off about Mobile msn not supporting multiple accounts and also the paid for version will only support @hotmail or @msn accounts not @mydomain accounts.
Regards
Charlie
Does Agile support Videochat (preferably via wifi)?
Agile does not support video at the moment but there is another thread on the forum about the new version of agile for WM5. I think they are working on video support but if it will support that in version 1 beta or not is yet to be decided.
In the T-Mobile Germany ROM Update MSN Messenger is included. And it works fine!
I use now Agile Messenger and MSN Messenger. If you also want use ICQ, then Agile is better. MSN Messenger does not have so many features (e. g. no Emoticons, but Agile shows them correctly)
I wonder, if it is possible to make a cab file out of the MSN files of this ROM in order to use it for other Roms. Any ideas?
Hey all,
We're currently evaluating WinMo devices to replace blackberries in our company... thus far the results have been a mixed bag to say the least.
I look after an exchange 2003 environment (SP2) so we're push-email ready, however there's one big thing holding us up - IM.
On the blackberries, we use something called Blackberry Messenger which is capable of both online and offline messages, and pretty infallible. It runs in the background and whenever a user is online handles the sign-on and message delivery, likewise if a user is offline the network queues the message until they're back online.
I can't find anything like this for windows mobile, can anyone suggest soemthing I'm missing? until I have this we're stuck with blackberry...
TIA
German T-Mobile is offering a BlackBerry Software Addon for the MDA Vario - I started a thread a while back right here in the forum.
Since I have no use for Blackberry, etc. I have not installed/used it. But maybe its what you are looking for.
The only way to do (online) IM now on WM5 devices is via PocketMSN I think.
Dont know any alternatives (especially that can handle offline IM).
I'm new here, but....
I know on the PC there is a program that handles offline messaging and it is available on the PocketPC now too. It's called ICQ. You can send a message offline and the person will receive it when they logon.
http://www.icq.com/download/ftp-pocketpc.html
Lemme know if that's what you're looking for.
you can use Agile Messenger.. Lets you use AIM/ICQ/Yahoo/MSN IM accounts. There's a thread someone in here that has the info on it.. just search the forums for Agile Messenger.
You might want to contact Jabber and work out somemthing with them, the idea's mentioned above are good but I know you need something internal (not somthing that has potential use for (ab)use/danger)

Any day now, M$ is gonna release mobile office connect. If you use office connect already this will move the IM client out to WM5.
You can try Saki,
It has the features you mentioned as well as integrated email, RSS feeds, and others. I know a company that chose to use this software and wizards instead of Blackberries.

Let's not forget Microsoft's Live Communication Server (LCS) 2005 with the office communicator SIP client.

In my opinion none of them is worth the money! In fact IM services should be free just like they used to be!
Agile Messenger is a beautiful IM client and supports all standard IM (AOL, ICQ, MSN, YAHOO and more) but the price on the software is a joke! Well, as long as they find people spending that ammount of money they won't go down with the price anyway!
IM+ never worked on my NOKIAs and also not on my XDA!
I can see who is online, I can send them an IM but never receive what they are typing in ... ! The interface is not as comfortable and handy as the Agile Messengers, looks somehow way behind ...

Yeah I think its insane that they want money for the programs wish AOL would come out with a good I'M client for wm5/wm6
IM+ works on T-MobileWeb... i tried......
I use VeriChat.. its a good client and is pretty fast. The basic is free and you can set a bunch of away messages to pick from.. it also supports a variety of things.. but sadly they don't sell it anymore.. i attached the EXE though in case you want to try it

LOL,
maybe it is about time that we sit together and develop a XDA Messenger!
I know a little bit about programming allthrough mobile programming is none of my favorites! I am not familiar with the COMPACT FRAMEWORK and WM5 / WM6 API but it can't be that hard ...
sounds good to me!

I have no programing skill on pocket pcs but if you want to give it a run be my guest lol...anyway
anyone have agile beta cab could you post it or email it? [email protected]ail.com thanks if you do
i prefer im+, frankly, i lost my copy of agile, and it always had some issues anyway
@jaychym: if i find a copy, ill send it to you
I use AIM on my 8125.. I kind of like having the actual AIM as opposed to paying for Agile..

The bad thing is: if you use almost any of the Messengers, like I do, it is quite complicate if you do not have an application such as AGILE ... I would buy it for US$20.00 if that would include a life time subscription, but not for more ... Also: for YAHOO is not really a messenger out there (except the one integrated in the TMO US ROMs, and that one really sucks!!!).
I just 'scammed' the web to see if anybody out there works on a open source project for messengers on PDA's but could not find any good stuff ... either it is so old that it is not worth to try to bring it back to life or it is not open source ... sad!
Well with the growing popularity of the Windows Mobile platform, thanks to increasing sales of it via phones, I think you will begin to see a greater proliferation of software like this for the platform.
Now, that said, I would welcome an XDA Messenger if someone should choose to write one and I would gladly help to beta test it. There's just no way I'm paying a monthly subscription fee for IM software on top of what I pay for my phone and data.
Otherwise it looks like it's separate apps. Windows Live, that older free version of AIM from the UK and the new version of Yahoo! Mobile should be out soon for WM devices.
XDA Messenger would be sweet! Does anyone know if Jabber is based on SMS? There's a free ap at http://www.movsoftware.com/products/imov/imov.htm, but it's no good to me if it uses SMS. I have unlimited data, but pay for each text message
i kno that Jabber is available in IM+ and the whole program uses data. I personally dont use Jabber, but I assume its the same for all services.
i love the idea.. of making a program so that we could all use it.. i would help but i have no clue how to make a program.. but if u guys get around to making it.. itd be kewl if u guys included personalized away messgaes so we could out it in and so that it appears online like on a computer. not i'm mobile like when u sign on froma fone... well this are just suggestions if u guys do end up making one thatd be great..
I used QuickIM for MSN until I installed WM6 with Live messenger. It has no subscription, available for all mobile platforms *except* WM, but there is a rudimentary jar version which is what I used.

Thanks for answering. I'm still looking for the right solution, and I'm sure it won't include paying $40-$45
agile.....
i have a copy of agile, sharing it with the masses

thanks for the prog but it seems you have to register it and pay for it.
considering pdaphones/smartphones are more popular these days alot people would find that a good free messenger-program would be nice to have. sadly i don't have any programming skills but would definitely be among the list of beta testers for windows mobile 2003 and windows mobile 5/6.
FRing NOTHING IS BETTER THAN FRING
Hey all. I'm thinking about writing an Instant Messaging Client for Windows Mobile.
My ideas include:
Ability to use any major instant messaging network: ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk, AIM, etc.
Touch Screen Friendly
You can be connected to all your networks from both your desktop and phone at the same time.
It can be used as a replacement for the standard "Contacts" application: all your non-instant messaging Contacts will be viewable on this client as well. You can do the standard stuff as well: call, email, text, as well as send an IM.
What I'm wondering, is if you guys would be interested in this, and if it's even worth my time. So please vote and let me know!
well i'm very intrested. any thoughts on vga video chat integration?
It'd be just great. I'd love to see it happen
im+ is good and has a 7 day trial
agile messenger is also good and i believe also has a trial
the best for me has been beejive its still beta but works great for me is free and has a great UI that makes it feel something like SMS on the iphone
beejive.com
these all work with multiple services
id be interested if it could compete with these especially if the UI could blend with the diamond or touchflo 3D
NYRican is right, it should match the Tf3D UI, would be a great Idea, & the greatest would be if the VIDEO CHAT works as well.
GoodLuck
Skype
WOW.Can you include Skype? as i found very few clients include it
great...
i think it will be very usefull when you realise something like imov
a full compatible xmpp jabber protocol messenger with transports feature for other messaging protocols like msn icq ...
as opensource project or freeware
Benefits:
- xmpp needs little traffic
- transports have the benefit that all status and standby comunication per protocol is reduced to one!
- programing is easyer because you must integrate only one protocol
- as opensource or freeware other developer can support you
...
definitely a fantastic idea
1) nice gui interface (agile, im+ = brutal interfaces)
2) NON Memory HOG! (Beejive is great, but runs very slow)
3) NON Power Consuming! (Beejive eats battery likes its going out of style when running for long periods of time)
-----------
Those are my comments based on other applications on the market.
if you can pull of designing a very nice interface, easy to use with the touchscreen for vga, that'd be awesome!
I'd love to use a killer mobile TF3D integrated contacts and unified communication client for the Microsoft Unified Communications products!
Right now, I sync with my Outlook contacts OTA on Exchange and have access to our company directory. That alone has proven invaluable already..
+1 very nice to such an App.
Maybe a little bit nokia 5800 like.
There You can also handle everything to do with Contact
( IM, SMS, Phone, Pics...) via the Contact app.
This would be a very very great App.
Respect for Idea.
greets doena
Thumbs up here
I think this is what is needed to complete this mobile
and IM that can do it all
Looking forward to it

there already is a client for MS unified communications (OCS) for windows mobile. but your company needs to have an edge OCS server running or else you won't be able to connect.
i would like to see this, but it's gotta be a LOT of work? if you plan on implementing all those protocols.. i know with miranda (a windows multi protocol IM) they have enough resourcing issues with one developer per protocol.. and you are suggesting that you develop all the protocols as well as the UI and everything else? impressive..

My plan is to host an Openfire XMPP server, and that provides gateways to all the other IM clients. There is also an open source XMPP client library called Jabber.NET. Really, all I would be doing is hosting a server and writing a rich XMPP client UI. And for a phone, funneling all the traffic through one protocol and proxy works out much better on performance and battery life.
So I would not be writing any code related to protocols, but I would have to maintain a server and pay for bandwidth costs. Ultimately that means I would not be able to do this entire project for "free" like everything else I do: I need a way to make enough revenue off of it to pay for the hosting service.
Also, regarding the MS Live Communications client. Not only do you need to run an Exchange and LCS server, you need to purchase an additional license for Public IM connectivity. That license is around $13-$16 per user per year. And on top of that, you must use the MS Live Communications client, which is not so touch friendly: what I really want out of this is a nice, usable, IM client.
