So I've got Touch-IT 4.5 on my phone (UK Version with O2) and was just wondering, will this phone work in the USA with this firmware?
Also, I have unlimited internet on my phone but not abroad. How can I turn it all off so when i'm in America I don't get charged £6/mb ?
you can use modaco nodata to disable the internet connections of your phone. its a really small, but useful application.

yes your phone will work in USA but your O2 goes on roaming cost a lot of $$$ I recommend to buy a AT & T or Virgin prepaid card when you there so your Work Colleges can call you on this #, for the internet most of the Hotels if you stay in an Hotel have complementary I-net with Wlan and when you have Skype with a money account you can call via wlan + Skype for less than a cent to GB
if you stay in a Hotel from Hilton group I recommend to get a Hilton honors card asap it’s for free there points program are one of the best in the World.

I am going on a trip to Florida in August and would like to know what is the best way to get low cost calls and GPRS access. I plan to either use Opera as my main browser or use the EXEC as a modem for my laptop.
I have looked at some options but was not sure whether they will work.
1. Buy a T Mobile Sidekick sim card from a US ebay seller and get GPRS for $1 a day
2. But a T Mobile SPeal Easy Sim card from a us ebay seller and get unlimited GPRS (wap only?)
But will it work with my exec and are there other ways?
If you're currently with a data package from O2, UK, you may find there is no additional cost for using GPRS abroad, i.e., no roaming fee for data connection. This was at least the case when I was travelling in China using Exec with the O2 SIM card. Of course the roaming price for voice calls is however unacceptably high.
I'm heading down to Florida (from UK) in early February and was wondering if I will be able to use my Vario II when I'm there?
I have a T-Mobile contract with Web n'Walk (unlimited Net access).
I would like to use my Vario to access the Internet.
Is my Web n'Walk transferable? Or will I pay a fortune to access the Net when I'm abroad?
Also, any advice about using my phone while I'm there would be appreciated (e.g. should I purchase a SIM for the duration of my holiday?).
If you are roaming then you should be able to use if no problem, though I recommend you unlock it and pick up a sim while you are there as it will be much cheaper.
Forget the damned phone and go see Florida properly!!!!

I am going to Florida on business (and pleasure).
Ask your T-mobile about net access (roaming) in Florida. If that's short trip ,use wi-fi spots ,like a Starbucks .
I was there last November MDA works great, GSM and GPRS (no G3)
don't forget to disable auto download application's (RSS, whether etc)
I the most of the hotels WIFI is for free.
Starbuck has also WIFI but you have to pay for it
even if you use your T-mobile hotspot account.
it's cheaper to use GPRS for short connections..

you WILL pay for using GPRS data connections abroad. W'n'W unlimited access works only in UK.
The using hot spots is cheaper anyway. The most of Starbucks has free hot spots, some not. The most has contract with T-mobile. As far I remember , the Barnes and Noble bookstor's has free hot spots too.
I've been on Florida a year ago. Always hoked up in to the free Starbucks hot spots.

I'm due to fly out to Australia for a 3 week holiday on Saturday.
I had planned to purchase a PAYG (or prepaid as they call it) SIM and use it in my unlocked
Vario II to keep in touch with family/friends via email and also update an
online travel blog. Unfortunately I have just discovered that none of the
Australian cell networks appear to offer full internet access on PAYG.
Anyone know if this is the case, and more importantly anyone know of a way I can get full internet access whilst out there without having to pay t-mobile £7.50 per MB for roaming data (i only pay that a month for unlimited access at home!)

Im not sure about the prepay card you are speaking of..... but I just move to Sydney and spent the first month trying to sort some mobile internet out.
In the end I got an uncle to set up a vodafone account for me then I used that (they wouldnt give me an account unless I could provide 3 months Australian payslips and about 50 forms of ID)

Try to organise it before you leave or you may find it really difficult.

mobile internet in australia sucks, i work for Telstra and even on my staff plan its damn expensive.
id love to get unlimited mobile net on my jam, ive often said id gladly trade my phone line for a dataline on my mobile anyday of the week.
As far as i know, none of the australian service providers have internet access on prepaid sims. I guess you are out of luck.
I'm in Australia and there are a few HSDPA providers of Mobile internet (a sim card that u can stick in a usb stick to get the web on ur laptop)
Do you need any special software to use these sim cards in a blackstone to access HSDPA, and possibly use VOIP instead over the internet? or is it probably not worth it.
I'd really like to ditch my overpriced vodafone mobile. $4 per megabyte of data seems like alot.
If you want to use data with Vodafone you have to add a plan to your mobile sim as if you use data with out a plan it cost the world, have to mortgage house!!!
If you do that you could use Voip and if HSDPA isn't available you still can use the phone as normal.
Not sure about voip software as I haven't used voip with HSDPA only Skype with WiFi.
You're right the data plans are slightly better but they're still excessive!
I was wondering if I could ditch the mobile part and get a pure data plan (vodafone calls it mobile broadband) like on this page (targeted at laptops) and use it in my phone instead?

After some disagreement with Bell, I've tried to find some truth regarding smart phone plans and the OMNIA II. The Bell representatives stated the Omnia II will only work with a smartphone plans (which conveniently start at $50 Ouch!)
Supposedly if I outright buy the phone (full price) I won't be forced into a contract. Assuming I'm contract free... can I subscribe to a cheaper monthly voice plan only?
The goal is to use the phone as a WM 6.5 PDA and surf only when in the vicinity of WIFI (home and office etc). For the few phone calls I make (which avg 4-5 a month - yes I hate talking on a cell phone), a simple voice plan with basic text messaging should suffice?
The issues surrounding this are:
A. Has this been done successfully before - is anyone doing it now???
B. When a WIFI hotspot isn't available, will the browser fail or will it secretly connect to the cellular network and ding me with data charges?
C. Having no prior experience with a GPS enabled cell phone - this "A-GPS" needs the data package to work? Or can I use it with a voice plan only?
D. I've heard stories of smartphones constantly talking to the cellular network, is this an issue? or is there a way to disable the data connections forcing it to use WIFI only?
E. Would any of this warrent unlocking the phone? Bell stated it comes locked with a Bell SIM card (its on their HSPA+ network).
Again, the goal is to use it as a suped' up PDA, surf only on WIFI and subscribe to a bare bones phone package for that occasional call I might make.

Re: Disabling GPRS - try NoData from Modaco - its a freeware, just google for it and disable all your data plans.
O2 will work with just voice plan
A. Omnia 2 will work with just a voice plan, I used mine in the Cook Islands last week with just a voice plan SIM.
B.The problem is that Bell offers data with the phone setting so you would have to make sure you disable the data, not just with Opera or the GPS, or you will incur data charges and they will roll up quickly. Most likely they offer the bundle (I have it and fine it a very reasonable plan for my phone use) because people regularly use data by mistake.
C. GPS Worked just fine. I couldn't use google maps but no problem, there's only one real road
D. As long as you are not using push email or any application that accesses the internet automatically you should not incur charges.
E.You don't have to unlock the phone unless you want to go with a different provider than Bell.
Are you set on having an Omnia 2? Perhaps a better option would be to purchase an unlocked Omnia 2 and a pay as you go SIM from a provider that does not have data.

That rep was full of ****. Buy the phone outright, and call Bell and ask them to disable the data for you so you never have to second guess or accidentally use data on your phone. Be careful, you must disable data on every sim card you decide to use.

I just signed a three year contract with Bell, a few weeks ago i was surfing on their site and like you said , impossible to get a Omnia 2 without a data plan, last week i went back on, and I dont know if its a bug, but you can order one with a regular voice plan, i took the 30$ plan ( cheapest) got the phone by mail , free.
If i click on my connections on top you can disable all data, and only use wifi. If it does want to use data it warns you before activating it.
