For all the fellow Fallout-3 fans out there that have wanted their very own pip-boy without the accompanying post-nuclear holocaust... well...it looks like you will have to wait for the holocaust... the lawyers of the game have demanded that I remove my skin from this website. The theme was originally available for free from this XDA-Developers site as well as from www.throttlelauncher.com however, in compliance with the developers of the game, all my files have been deleted. I take no responsibility for those who obtained my free theme before it was deleted from this website, and who have since reposted links to the theme within this thread (#122) and at other wm freeware websites as it is completely out of my control.
For those unhappy with Bethesda's decision may wish to e-mail them.

Here's an idea that I have that maybe the moderators and the rest of the community can help me expand on.
Since it's award season (e.g. Grammy's, Tony's, Oscar, Golden Globes, etc) I was thinking that we should have an annual xda-developer's awards.
I was thinking that a group of moderators could take cash donations thru paypal or some other means and hand out cash prizes for the awards voted best. The monies could be collected thru out the year that way by award time there should be plenty of money to "hand out as cash prizes" Maybe T-shirts could be printed for nominees.
I was thinking that moderators could choose the nominee's and then the community could vote on the winners. I think it would be counter-intuitive to have the community vote the nominees.
Some of the categories could be as follows:
Best ROM (To include sub-categories for different handsets) and then one overall ROM of the Year.
Most Creative App: (This categories could include apps that aren't IPhone knock off or sims; Trackme and Advanced Configuration come to my mind quickly)
Best IPhone SIM (e.g. IFonz, itask, S2U2, many others)
Best Skin
Best Finger Friendly Application
Best App collaboration (Many people are not just creating apps on their own)
Developer of the Year (Many devs create more than a few apps or create a killer app and should be considered for this award). This allong with APP of the Year should be considered the TOP awards
Can I get some feed back from any mods or the community? Suggestions on prizes and additional categories? Or even if this idea stinks that's cool too.
Ahh we would need a clever name for the awards as well..or would XDA-Developer awards suffice?
Just my two cents.
Great idea!
Really cool idea..I think this way will surely motivate all developers to work even more harder
+1
It should not be so bad! I'm in.
Awesome idea!! I'd love to see this happen.
Some good ol' recognition never hurt anyone. That sounds like a fantastic idea
Best Finger Friendly Application
A_C's S2XXX apps - that's my vote.
Best Rom for the Wing/Herald
I nominate ttran for his Open Touch 3.0 lite
Far Superior to the Stock T-Mobile Rom.
Love it . All of them will rock.........
A_C for best dev ever.
That's really a nice idea, but I don't think it's the way to go. I really don't know why, but it seems that it will cause some trouble at a point. Maybe, it would be better to just simplify by just awarding the title to the respected person(s).
Plus, this is online. You never know if forgery, any or any mishap will come up. Anyways, just a thought. Can't really explain what I'm trying to say. It's all mumbo-jumbo-ed.
think if this is managed properly it could be a brilliant idea
any mods have any views as you guys would have most of the work?
Count me in too. Can't wait for this to happen.
This is a fantastic idea! Even if the reward is just a speacial rank on this site it would help dev's feel as though they have accomplished something and it would also encourage people to daonate.
And for best ROM dev I would nominate YUC for his O2 XDA Stealth ROM which no one eslse has been able to do!
Some one should do a poll in this thread!
Made this into a poll here:

Guys and gals,
This year’s Smartphone and Pocket PC Magazine Best Software Awards ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/awards/ ) is getting near. I, being the Nominations Manager for the Awards, would like to invite you ALL to participate in it, regardless of whether you’re a developer or “just” a user of them.
If you’re a developer, it’d be REALLY great if you could enter the apps you’ve written in the Smartphone & PPCMag Encyclopedia ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/_enc/cat.asp?cat=2&name=Software ; you can add new entries there too). It’s free and, then, in addition to your having your app listed in the list, it’ll be far easier for me to nominate it for the Awards if I deem it worthy enough. In the last two years, I spent DAYS of chasing down developers of top (freeware) titles like Qmail and Pocket GBA in order to being able to nominate them. I would prefer NOT having to waste so much time at contacting developers this year and asking them to enter their titles in the Encyclopedia – I have better and more productive things to do.
Being listed in the Encyclopedia, your stuff will also get far more exposure outside XDA-Devs and other “geek” sites as well.
Just like with last year, don’t think a free app can’t compete with commercial stuff out there. For example, VITO CopyPaste, Opera Mini, fring, Emu42, Google Maps Mobile, Orb, Qmail, My Mobiler, Mobipocket Reader, PHM Plus!, FuseSP etc. were all finalists, GB-SOFT Tweak, CastCE, Emu48, ScummVM, LogMeIn (Free), most of masterall’s emulators etc. were winners. Top-notch freeware titles like Dotfred’s PIM Backup or TaskMgr or Vijay555’s VJFullscreenTSC were also nominated (albeit didn’t win / become a finalist because of the very strong competition in the same category).
If you’re “just” a user of these apps, you’re also VERY strongly asked to nominate your favorites, should they not already be nominated. As a rule of thumb, all of the last year’s nominated titles are automatically re-nominated, unless there’re radical changes – for example, new titles – in the given category necessitating the un-nomination of the (comparatively) weakest titles OR the given title hasn’t been discontinued in the meantime. You can see the list of these apps – that is, the 2007 nominees / finalists / winners – at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/awards/category_all_2007_newquery.asp .
I don’t want to leave any decent, new utility I may have overlooked not nominated. With the current rate new apps and tools are released here at XDA-Devs, I just can’t keep up with all the new versions / releases, no matter how hard I try. (And I have a LOT of other things to do – for example, I’m working on a Digital TV and CDMA Bible, concentrating on a lot of EE stuff and also preparing a major speech at a W3C conference on mobile Web browsers, leaving me little time testing all the new XDA-Devs-originating stuff.)
(Also see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=300200 for my 2007 announcement – it’s a bit outdated tough.)
Remarks / comments / recommendations are welcome!
Awesome. I'm excited about this. These awards always help me find new/interesting titles to toy with.
Apart from what's on your list already, and in terms of eloquence and overall usefulness, I love the PocketCM Keyboard, and I use it all the time. In terms of functionality, I like that new Internet Connection Sharing Control (http://cleanimport.xda/index.php?threads/377047/) program. It's still in development, but the idea of it is great: finally an all-in-one utility for handling all of the various Internet sharing configurations. As far as I know, it's also the first program to let a user use their phone as a wifi adapter.
I personally think that Schaps Advanced Config is the most usefull program for what I do, but I'm not entirely sure what kind of programs are within the scopes of this...
+1 l3v5y
And for the best suite of programs, A_Cs S2 series win every time although they're not the most innovative programs in that they are just trying to copy the iPhone....
Hi Everyone,
I need to add a few points to Werner's (Menneisyys) post. (I am the owner of Smartphone and Pocket PC magazine and in charge of the awards).
First, as you might have guessed, the quality of our category structure and to a large extent the nominees is directly due to Werner's incredible efforts.
I asked Werner to get started ASAP, and his response naturally was to post here. However, as you will see we aren't as ready as we might be.
At www.PocketPCmag.com are in the middle of a conversion of data from our current rich but hodgepodge of a site, mostly written in ASP. We are moving to a cleaner, more uniform look using the Drupal Content Management System.
Because of timing, we decided to do the awards and leave the encyclopedia of software and accesssories in our current (ASP) system for now. Then probably when nominations are frozen in July we'll switch over.
However, we REALLY need to update the input form for vendors.
It looks like we'll have to do that in ASP. We are juggling a lot, and we can't commit to updating the form until at the latest, May 1.
So, the ideal from Werner and my side, would be to at least make sure your products are in the db now. Then everyone can update their information as soon as I give the OK here.
THANKS and good luck.

Nothing comes near.
Thanks guys for the feedback.
I've (being the author of several networking & hacking-related tutorials & hacks) already played a bit with CSC but still haven't had the time to test it in all possible configurations / on all my WinMo devices. Will definitely post a detailed review / evaluation on it and also nominate it for this year's Awards. (Preparing for a W3C speech, in addition to preparing my next Bibles, takes a LOT of time and work so I can't really test new software right now...)
BTW, at the General forum, there's a Dev Awards thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2100268 ); I'm thinking of in some way combining it with the Smartphone Mag awards structure before May.
BTW 2, speaking of last year's nominees and categories, feel free to comment on them too - what other titles would you see nominated? I prefer open discussions like this to PPCMag's (closed) user nomination system because a lot of people can chime in the discussion, making the nomination process as democratic as possible. (While, of course, I reserve the right to have the final word in nomination ).
Yeah A_C's programs are sooooo awesome!
Besides already mentioned pprgrams, i'd also add MortButtons and ThumbCal (still a beta, but already usable) to nominated applications.
Also, Mollusk's great (mostly free) games sure deserve a nomination (www.xFlib.net)
S2U2, S2V, S2P by A_C +1 for those, and I'd like to add Emunutz for his HTC HomeCustomizer and Chi Tai Dang for Battery Status
I would like to nominate Slither2006's SCLPC++ cube. It is a fantasticly useful tool in its present form and with the changes that he has stated will be in the next version, I really think that it deserves consideration. It may just be a retrofit for older PDA's, but for the vast amount of older models out there, it gives a new lease on life.

All 3 are Great!!
As you all know, all S2 applications are freeware. That is, they cannot be sold for any purpose and it's stated clearly in the attached license file.
However, it's found some guys do repeatly sell them through eBay or their own websites. For eBay, I have to submit an individual email to eBay when a suspicious listing is found. That's really time-wasting.
Recently, I came across this website: www.iphonethemeforppc.com. I asked the website owner to remove S2U2, but he simply declined.
I'm totally sick of them.
So, I'll suspend the development of any S2 applications until there is any good sign of changes.
Anyway, thanks all for your support. Take care.
Update: 11-Sep
Got the reply from iphonethemeforppc
We do not sell S2U2! We offer it as an optional free download from our
site just as most of the other sites on the web.
When you purchase the iphone theme you will download a zip file that is
an html file and a Cab file with all the wisbar theme addons and a txt
file. This is NOT the S2U2 files and we do not sell your software. I
already said this once so get it straight!
We don’t believe in selling copyright software and we don’t endorse it!
Now if you want to know who I believe is doing it wrong look at this
site: http://www.web-resort.com/. They actually have it included in
their download package!
With that being said, We don’t have a problem re-wording our site if
that makes you feel better, but we are NOT selling your software.

But up till now, S2U2 is still posted on this website with screenshots & wordings like "Features"...
Here is the reply from another beggar at web-resort.com:
we are not selling S2U2 as it is a free application as stated on our
website.
Please read the part of our Warranty Disclaimer relative to freeware:

It's even worser that it's selling the whole series of S2...
So, I have to keep on suspending the development. Take care.

I must say thanks all for your support & feedback. I'll think seriously about every suggestion you've posted here but I have not made up my mind yet. So please forgive me for the lack of update of any S2 apps in the near future.
Take care... I'll be back...

It has been brought to my attention that many android application developers have no idea how to properly class their applications by name. Here we will review a few common terms specific to this context.
Here is a list of terms in no specific order which we will review in this document.
Free
Lite / Basic
Standard
Advanced
Proffesional
Premium
Trial
Demonstration
Firstly let me start by saying that the word 'free' should never be in an application title. There are exceptions to this rule. For example a video game might have the word free in its title, such as 'free world defenders.' It should be clear to the developer that the word 'free' should not be used in an application title in reference to the cost of ownership. In practice this is at best unprofessional and untidy.
It may seem to the beginning developer that this would add clarity and destinction to a specific release of an application but this is an unnecessary clarification as most applications are already classified by price categories. At best all the developer has achieved is lengthening the title of the application and flagged it as possibly unworthy of usage. Most people don't expect to get much of anything for free. Keep this in mind when you develop your freeware applications.
I have also found that many developers have taken the word 'professional' entirely out of context. Instead of providing an example just yet, let us explore what the word professional actually means.
pro·fes·sion·al adj.
1.
a. Of, relating to, engaged in, or
suitable for a profession: lawyers,
doctors, and other professional
people.
b. Conforming to the standards of a
profession: professional behavior.
2. Engaging in a given activity as a
source of livelihood or as a career: a
professional writer.
Let's apply this definition in the context of software applications. Joe is a blogger. He blogs all day about his life. In fact there is almost nothing that Joe would not blog about. Joe decides that he could get more blogging done if he could quickly post his thoughts from his mobile. Joe goes to the market and he finds three things: Blogger Free, Captain's Blog, and Blogger Professional.
Joe thinks for a second... He decides right off the bat that he is no ordinary blogger and that he does not want deal with advertisements, so he overlooks Blogger Free without hesitation. Joe thinks that Captain's Blog sounds interesting. He decides to look it over because Blogger Professional sounds like it may have more features than he is really interested in. Joe is happy with Captain's Blog, and it is the first thing he blogs about saying: "I'mma live happily ever after!"
The term 'professional' implies that your application will employ features useful to the individual who requires industry standard adherence to specific guidelines laws, regulations, or operating procedures. Users in this market will have certain expectations. It is important that whenever you use the tagline 'Professional' that you have done your research and tested your product in the field with real professionals.
Usually products that employ groundbreaking features or features that can't be found anywhere else attempt to call themselves professional, but as stated before this term is at best reserved for industry professionals who require specific functionality. The proper tag for this kind of application is 'advanced.' Because it provides advanced functionality.
Some applications are so prolific that they require two tags such as 'professional advanced' or 'professional basic.' Yes, there is a 'professional standard' (no pun intended) as well as many other combinations. use whatever makes sense. I call these titles of prestige.
The term 'standard' implies, that an application meets or sets "the bar" by which applications that perform similar functions must reach to begin to consider themselves competition. It also implies that there is more to come or more to be had from this application and it's descendants or even its competition.
The term 'basic' or 'lite' is essentially the same as the term 'standard' but basic/lite implies the bare minimum required to achieve an acceptable effect. Usually this is an application with reduced functionality in order to meet a restriction on cost, time space, or otherwise.
The term 'premium' implies that your software is giving the best functionality there is, or the best functionality that it has to offer. this term should not be used lightly by any developer who wants to be taken seriously in the world of software engineering.
Trialware implies that an application has either full or limited features on the basis of time or functionality. Trialware is not freeware and should never display advertisements for anything other than itself. It is a platform for you to exhibit your product and the main idea is to sell YOUR full product. This is when you call your product a 'Trial.'
The difference between a trial and a demonstration may seem vague but it is not so. It should suffice to say that a 'trial' can be upgraded or unlocked, and a 'demonstration' can be replaced or succeeded with the final product. A demonstration may also have advertisements for other programs or services offered by the developer or its affiliates.
If you like this paper let me know! This is my first draft. Feel free to comment constructively and chat amongst yourselves with proper regard to the topic.
- Posted via mobile
Here is something else that I had not thought of while drafting this document. The term 'full' is like the term 'free' it is completely redundant or otherwise pointless to state that an application incorporates all of its functionality.
I am not yet sure where I stand on the term 'donator' but I am sure I would like to know what the application is donating to. If it is feeding starving children I would like to pat it on the back and send my donation in as well.
The terms 'plus' and 'extended' were not covered either. These terms are highly acceptable and they imply that the application has extra functionality which is not available in other versions.
These terms work very well with titles of prestige or as new ones. For example: 'proffesional standard plus,' 'standard plus' or 'extended basic.' These can be shortened into abbreviations to create some interesting artifacts such as 'PSP,' 'SP,' or 'EB.'
If you are running a charity, consider using the terms '+,' 'plus,' 'extended,' or the abbreviated forms instead of 'donator.'

It's okay I understand you are neither professional nor do you aim to be. I taught myself everything I need to know in the field.

the following is an email i received 2 hours ago... read on
The largest online protest in history has fundamentally changed the game. You were heard.
On January 18th, 13 million of us took the time to tell Congress to protect free speech rights on the internet. Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion, people all around the world saw what we did on Wednesday. See the amazing numbers here and tell everyone what you did.
This was unprecedented. Your activism may have changed the way people fight for the public interest and basic rights forever.
The MPAA (the lobby for big movie studios which created these terrible bills) was shocked and seemingly humbled. “‘This was a whole new different game all of a sudden,’ MPAA Chairman and former Senator Chris Dodd told the New York Times. ‘[PIPA and SOPA were] considered by many to be a slam dunk.’”
“'This is altogether a new effect,' Mr. Dodd said, comparing the online movement to the Arab Spring. He could not remember seeing 'an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically' in the last four decades, he added."
Tweet with us, shout on the internet with us, let's celebrate: Round of applause to the 13 million people who stood up - #PIPA and #SOPA aretabled 4 now. #13millionapplause

13 million strong,
Tiffiniy, Holmes, Joshua, Phil, CJ, Donny, Douglas, Nicholas, Dean, David S. and Moore, Fight for the Future!
P.S. China's internet censorship system reminds us why the fight for democratic principles is so important:
In the New Yorker: "Fittingly, perhaps, the discussion has unfolded on Weibo, the Twitter-like micro-blogging site that has a team of censors on staff to trim posts with sensitive political content. That is the arrangement that opponents of the bill have suggested would be required of American sites if they are compelled to police their users’ content for copyright violations. On Weibo, joking about SOPA’s similarities to Chinese censorship was sensitive enough that some posts on the subject were almost certainly deleted (though it can be hard to know).
...
After Chinese Web users got over the strangeness of hearing Americans debate the merits of screening the Web for objectionable content, they marvelled at the American response. Commentator Liu Qingyan wrote:
‘We should learn something from the way these American Internet companies protested against SOPA and PIPA. A free and democratic society depends on every one of us caring about politics and fighting for our rights. We will not achieve it by avoiding talk about politics.’"

Never is a kind of stretch. It could and it will, just not yet. Freedom is earned not given, and when people become lazy, it is lost.
Great news though, hopefully this will make the MPAA and others hold off on censorship and blocking of innovative technology for a while.
"delayed" all of us have to stay vigilant about every thing like this.

The bill didnt get dropped. Its been put on the shelf. It will rear its ugly head in a year or so.

We have to be on the lookout for similar bills, its retarded how they lobbied to try to sneak it into law hoping people wouldn't notice. Glad this one is shelved indefinitely
