I have a mogul and its pretty cool, with the custom rom and tweaks. I am thinking about switching to the Centro or 755p. I have some cool apps for the Centro or 755p I would like to try. I was think about the Centro, 755p, or the Treo 800w. I've had Windows for a while now and am wondering if a change to the Palm OS is worth it.
Whats everybody think?
My wife has a 755P and she counts the days till it's gone. The PalmOS feels so old and installing apps and shell enhancements to make it look and act more modern slow it down quite a bit. It lacks gps. The camera is even poorer in quality and much more basic than the Moguls. There's no reset button, you have to pull the battery....often! The built in browser is horrid, Opera Mini works but is less than stable. Basically, this phone would be really cool, if this were 2005!
I always laugh at the GUI on my friend's centro. The keyboard is also terribly small. And don't even bother with the 800w. My girlfriend had one from work for 2 months. She barely used it and the battery would not last more than 12 hours. Google and you will find identical comments relating to the battery. She would take it off the charger at 9am and by the time she left work around 5 it was low battery warning. By the time she got home it was dead.

I bought my wife, recently the Treo 755p, and she loves it. I have the Mogul 6800. First, I had a Palm Tungsten C and TX for so many years. So I am aware of so many apps available for the Treo. The camera on the Treo is way better than that of the mogul. The mogul is ridiculous... which is very low resolution. The treo takes vivid pictures. My wife and I compared the pictures. You can overclock the Treo, you can't the Mogul... believe me, I've been trying. Palm has more apps than windows mobile...Windows has an advantage over Palm in browsing the net... I prefer the Xiino for Palm as a top browser. Skyfire for WM sucks... I much prefer the hacked version of Opera Mobile for WM... no more "out of memory" warning. The treo is more attractive than the mogul too. With chrome buttons, easy to text with one hand and high resolution screen... the treo beats the mogul. Want to make the screen more attractive on the Treo... download appshelf....want better security, real security which windows doesn't have... try TealLock.... the mogul has wifi, a plus, but if you have unlimited data plan, it won't matter. Last, the treo feels more sturdy, unlike the mogul feels like cheap plastic....

We've also compared pictures between the two and the Moguls were better. Possibly differences in unit build/lens? The camera software is no comparison, the Treo is basic and a little slow. Thanks for the app suggestions, we'll try out xiino. Opera mini works, but the java VM is less than stable and has ended development. I agree on the feel issue, the 755 feels more solid but considering that it has no sliding keyboard, it should. Still, while the PALM may have more apps than WM, most are really really old and haven't been updated in 5-6-7 years. The biggest omission by Palm in this unit was to remove the reset button. Pulling the battery when something goes wrong gets tired. Also, a modern smartphone must have gps! Our contract isn't up for a few months, so we'll each be living with our respective phones for a while yet.
BTW, Skyfire doesn't suck per se, it's still beta and needs polish. If they eventually achieve Opera Mini speed with Opera Mobile functionality, it will be a killer app. Currently, I use the wicked fast Opera Mini for general browsing and (hacked)Opera Mobile when I need to d/l or use flash.
When you get down to it, I wouldn't recommend either of these phones at this point. The 755 because it's a 2005 phone with 3g tacked on. the Mogul because it's memory starved, over complicated and has 2 major h/w flaws (white spot and usb port)
jph8tr,
You are right about the Mogul hoggs memory...found a couple of apps that keep mines in check...MemMaid is one of them... if you need some more apps- go to my page: http://rferreira1.googlepages.com/mogul6800
For great palm software, hacks and tips- this forum rocks: http://www.1src.com/forums/
There is a great palm OOS app developer (dmitrygr from palmpowerups.com)- who is not affiliated with palm- pushes palm devices to the extreme... so you might not be aware of new apps since they can be only in palm forums like 1src only.
I agree with you about the reset button being in the back of the treo... it is inconvenient. And the lack of GPS... however who now a days don't have one in their vehicles...so for my wife, it is a useless function.
Skyfire, does suck. I know it is still beta...it looks choppy and it is slow on my Sprint Mogul... even when I use fast broadband wifi. The hacked Opera Mobile is faster, clearer and better (those interested- search for Opera on this great site). Just my two cents.
And you also right about the mogul has FLAWS- I have a little, not really noticeable white spot and my usb port gave out- so I can't sync with active sync anymore- tried all the hacks, tips... doesn't work. So I use NueMass Storage http://download-full-free.com/massstorage-nue-12/ freeware... makes my mogul into a drive... very useful.
These two phones are different and so it will depend on what kind of user are you.
i had a vogue before never a mogul,
but i have had a 755 and a centro before,
first i will go over the pros:
-the keyboards on both after you have had them for a little are actually really easy get around on
- the 755 and the centro both got really awesome battery life atleast for me and that was with using LJP ( its a nintendo and gameboy emulator) alot
- those are really the only positives i have to say about it
Cons
- the 755's camera is garbage, the centro one isnt that bad but it's still sub par
- the OS isnt as finger friendly as i had hoped it would be, i am not really a huge fan of using the stylus, the main screen is easy to work with your finger but any menu outside of them is a pain
- the blazer browser is total junk, you can run opera mini on it, but to do that you have find the java sphere which is a pain in its own, and also even when you have it its not very reliable
and the treo 800w,
from what i have seen of it at work is nice i just hate that there is no easy way to end tasks on it, there is no end programs by tapping X on it
sprint is getting the palm treo pro very soon but i doubt they have addressed any of the issues
So, if I go with Palm, is the 755 or the Centro better? Im assuming the Centro because its a newer model. I get a 30 day trial with Sprint so I can always go back to the Mogul or the Treo 800, Pre, or maybe a Palm Pre.

Wait for the Pre if you can. The Centro has a pretty low resolution screen, it's primary advantage is that it's about the same size as your average "dumb" phone.

I'd definitely wait for the Pre. Winmo, despite what anyone says, is ancient technology compared to the iPhone/Android/WebOS

Hello fellas and ladies!
My brother got an iPhone a few weeks ago and of course I have been testing it and comparing it to my first love (universal), which is still up for sale if anyone is interested !!!
I would like to mention the following (based on my comparison with my Uni) and ask you a question!
Pros:
3G/wifi internet is faster on the iPhone
- On Uni I have tried with Opera 9.5 and IE
Games are so much more advanced and flawless especially with the accelerometer!
Battery with heavy use on the iPhone lasts a little over a day! The Uni lasts much less with heavy use!! The battery on the Uni is terrible...
Cons:
No SD slot
Battery is not easily accessible
I hate iTunes
practically no cracked/patched soft/games <----- Huge downfall!!
At the moment I can't think of much else.
I can't wait for Omni any longer, they've been promising it for over a year and nothing yet.
So my question is: Would you consider switching from the Uni to the iPhone, and why?

I have respectfully read and agreed with most points in that thread!
However! my main reason for getting the iPhone would be internet access and battery life. Yes! I said it! battery life! my Uni will not last 5 hours internet browsing + video + music + games + work (word, notepad, calc, txt, mail, camera and so on) And I don't want to get an extended battery as its bulky as it is.
As much as we all want to hate the iPhone (me included!), we can't deny its internet browsing speeds both on WiFi and 3G (which is at the moment my main interest) Also GPS, accelerometer (fun!) and the crisp LCD! + more of which I can't think of right now.
I also have a problem with my Uni losing signal quiet often, and I get complaints that I'm unreachable!!! and I have tried many ROMs and Radios to fix this.
I don't know if its the hype of the iPhone or my frustration with the Uni that I'm considering it.
I guess, I just want a phone that works and capable of browsing 3G speeds...
But I will miss all the necessities that PPC offers!
Why can't someone on this forum flash the iPhone with WM6.1???!!!! Now that would be sweet!
I don't know what to do, I'm in dire need of battery life + 3G speed + 3.5 LCD (and above) + compact and accelerometer lol
Any thoughts?
I had an Iphone and sold it....as a gadget is nice specially for its multimedia features, but as a convergence device falls short in many ways..I wouldn't even consider trade it back for my HtC tilt much less for the Uni.
Could you buy/check in your country Samsung i900 Omnia? Much more features than iPhone, everybody speaks very good about it, and in Italy even cheaper than iPhone.
If I had to choose between Omnia and iPhone no doubt for Omnia, but I still have my Universal and it still works so good (even better with all the ROMS here )

I completely agree with you and I'm not even thinking of it as a replacement of my beloved Uni no matter how many times my Uni losses signal. I've even considered carrying them both in my two pockets, and yes I am joking!! but the thought did cross my mind!
But wouldn't you confirm that the battery life is better, 3G/WiFi is faster, and undoubtedly we'll see some development as far as hacks and manipulations with the ROM... I'm really hoping that someone can flash it with WM6.1 now that would be an awesome phone!

We do have the i900 up here, but I don't want to downgrade to a smaller screen if anything I'd like a larger one. Aside from the screen size it's a very impressive phone!
I don't understand why manufacturers do this moronic.... THING!!!! its absolutely frustrating why would you compete (i900) with the iPhone which has a 3.5" lcd with a 3.2"!!!!???? if only i900 had a larger screen I wouldn't even turn my head in iPhone's direction....... uuuuhhhhggggghhhhhhh
Why not get a touch diamond or touch pro? I have gone from the XDA Exec (Universal) to the diamond and am happy.
The on screen keyboard is tricky at first but my diamond flies and gets over a day so far when using GPS / Wifi etc. I would have gone for the pro as I am very used to the unis keyboard but in the end I couldn't justify the £150+ on top of what I got my Diamond for to go with the Pro just for the keyboard, card slot and extra memory. Try one out you might be surpised how nice they are and what they offer

I wish it was that easy, but I can't seem to settle with a smaller screen size than the one I have now.. I simply can't.
I appreciate your recomendation but the screen size is stopping me from moving past this obsession with the iPhone! Also, the speed of the 3G/WiFi as I mentioned above is what pushing me to get the iPhone...
All the people I know who own an iPhone not only are they happy with it but with every passing day they enjoy it even more.
The iPhone is far from being a good phone for buisiness use. You have limitations with e-mails, you don't synchronise easily with Outlook, the contacts are not accessed as easily as on WM6 and that is a very important aspect, if you have many contacts in your list.
The iPhone will make you scroll much more through the list, which is time consuming.
I tried the browsing, but the lack of keyboard is frustrating. The browser might be quite good, but it is not THAT much better.
iTunes is too annoying for me - I don't want to synchronize my musics, I just want to copy my mp3 songs. I HATE iTunes and would NEVER buy an iPod unless they change that.
Then you get a completly locked device, no memory expansion, no SDK, no freeware,...
I know - there now is a free SDK, but it is limited (cannot access all funtions) and developers have to pay to publish it, which means there won't be freeware.
All in all, I would say, the iPhone looks good, is a nice gadget and suits a normal user fine.
I however like to have something more powerfull: great screen, keyboard, lots of software and emulators. Hell, on the Universal you can even run DOS!
Cheers,
vma

These are the reasons as to why I still haven't committed to an iPhone.
It would be very hard to go from a Uni to something so "LOCKED" and "ONE DIMENSIONAL" But I do need a fast internet browsing device and a better battery life without the bulk, and not to mention the ability to receive calls in a home's basement which my Uni is not capable of doing.
Perhaps I'll wait until the G1 comes out as orb3000 said but than again I've seen it and its hideous!
I don't know... I just need a phone that works with fast browsing abilities, but then again I'll miss all the things that the Uni and WM represent!!
Honestly try a touch pro or diamond for a few hours - get one and send it back if not happy? I think you will be surprised

ahhh...Not true, with the latest firmware you can search through your contacts like in WM6
[QOUTE]
The iPhone will make you scroll much more through the list, which is time consuming.[/QOUTE]
Again, this is not true; for alphabetically arranged stuff in a list you can use the Alphabet row on the Right hand side to quickly scroll, otherwise IMHO scrolling is a lot easier with the new Multi-touch vs taking out the stylus and using it to scroll.
[QOUTE] tried the browsing, but the lack of keyboard is frustrating. The browser might be quite good, but it is not THAT much better.[/QOUTE]
Again, safari is miles ahead of internet explorer, using NF or opera reduces the margin by a fair margin, but guess what, all the sites that have been "optimized" for the iphone really fit seamlessly with the entire UI, and that is what makes safari a joy to use. Actually if you have an iphone (or can beg, borrow or steal one) try going to web sites like google, yahoo, amazon, facebook and see the difference yourself
[QOUTE]iTunes is too annoying for me - I don't want to synchronize my musics, I just want to copy my mp3 songs. I HATE iTunes and would NEVER buy an iPod unless they change that.[/QOUTE]
with the new itunes and the 2.0.x firmware , you can drag and drop your music into your iphone.
if you don't want to sync your PIM to outlook, you can forgo itunes completely and use a "FREE" winamp plugin"
going a bit off topic i simply HATE active-sync.(i may be a bit biased here as i owned a palm pilot and simply loved the simplicity and stability of Hot-sync
[QOUTE]Then you get a completly locked device, no memory expansion, no SDK, no freeware,...[/QOUTE]
Again, when we got our devices (UNI in our case) did we not have to worry about CID unlock, SIM unlock ???
How is jailbreaking and unlocking the iphone any different than what we did??
As far as an memory expansion slot is concerned, HTC is coming out with more and more devices without expansion slot, so why just blame apple??
[QOUTE]I know - there now is a free SDK, but it is limited (cannot access all funtions) and developers have to pay to publish it, which means there won't be freeware.[/QOUTE]
1)Yes, the SDK is free but is limited
2)Search for open toolchain to know how to get complete access
3)since you don't use iphone/itunes you have NO CLUE about the amount of free ware available through itunes. And did i mention that most of the software on the installer app and CYDIA is FREE.
talking bout "limited access", did the CORE player guys ever get access to the nVidia graphic accelerator in some HTC's??
[QOUTE]All in all, I would say, the iPhone looks good, is a nice gadget and suits a normal user fine.[/QOUTE]
very true
[QOUTE]I however like to have something more powerfull: great screen, keyboard, lots of software and emulators. Hell, on the Universal you can even run DOS![/QOUTE]
1)Uni's screen is CRAP. on a mildly sunny day, at max brightness the screen is completely washed out and unreadable.Yes it does have a VGA screen but the color reproduction, contrast is really really bad.
the iphone's screen on the other hand is FANTASTIC. with the sun beating down hard, the thing is still very readable!!! not to mention the contrast, brightness and colour reproduction is very good.
BTW when will HTC realise that it is time to R.I.P for the 65k screens???
2)leaving the 3g stuff apart, the iphone is way more powerful than are UNI (which is to be expected as the UNI is almost 3 years old)
3)if you can run DOS on the UNI, i can run UNIX bash on the iphone
4)there are loads of free QUALITY softwares and emulators available for the iphone (free and paid)
P.S- i made the switch from my uni to the iphone last year in oct. and have not regretted the decision even once.
heck its been more than 3 months since i last charged my UNI

not a problem at all.
however bear in mind that your choice should be decided on what you intend to do with your phone.
if you REPLY to lot of emails/ need PUSH-email/edit documents / then stay away from the iphone.
if on the otherhand , you only read emails (or only occasionally reply) and want a good, simple and stable phone with excellent multimedia functions, go for the iphone.
on a side note, i felt that my UNI was never a good "phone", i always had problems with signal strength, people complained that my voice was to 'muffled' or choppy.
after switching over to the iphone, i have not experienced these problems, now it very well may be that my cell service provider has upgraded there equipment or installed a new tower in my vicinity, but i have reason to think otherwise
Never get rid of my Uni
Yes, I'll never get rid of it! It's a great device!
I laugh at those who carry around their laptops and cellphones. I have it in my pocket... Running WM, linux or Dos - trying to run Android, what would you want more...
hey guys just got my iPhone...
Would like to point out that so far I'm not impressed but I am loving the fast internet speeds. YouTube quality is absolutely horible; I am very disapointed with its quality very choppy but is still watchable.
I'm enjoying the fact that I can post using my phone, hoever entering text is very difficult and uncomfortable but I'm sure I can get used to it.
I will try to compare it to the Uni and report back

choppy video...
how fast is your internet speed???
Sorry I haven't been home enough to make a comparison to my Uni...
What I found out is that the streaming video quality of the iPhone is as much pixelsted as on any other device, so I take back what I said above.
The 3G speeds are well beyond what I expected and a significantly faster than on my Uni.
I am very pleased with it right now and I can't wait to jailbreak it. I wish we had a section for the iPhone on this forum...
I'm posting using the iPhone, and the texting i'm getting used to so no issues with that!
Overall very pleased!

Hello Guys.
I got a Hermes previously an 8525, and wow it had a lot of issues, like the keyboard not working and the white screen and things like that.
I was wondering if the mogul had some or a lot or did it improve a lot?
Thanks guys.
I have a mogul and i cant in good conscience sugar coat it. Mogul is a POS in my opinion. it runs WM6 far to slow with only 64mb of RAM for programs. find yourself something else. i wish i could recommend it, but no..
The Mogul is just as bad; too many bugs, too slow, not enough RAM, no video drivers. I owned one for less than 6 months and sold it.
Now I have an equally buggy Treo 800w, but at least it's fast, has video drivers, and has plenty of RAM.
Hey man,
Mogul has problems too like the government,economy......and all. However several of us, Mogul users, got it to work to our satisafaction. I for one have 3 email accounts working flawlessly with push,GPS, Spb software,Resco,Radios,tv's, Skype
,occasional router and the list is way too long. I do not have to have half a dozen programs running at once, maybe some music while surfing the net, email/gps/phone call or something like that
Mogul is serving me well. Now that I am able to get a free HTC Pro, I will try it out.
Wow. All this hate against the mogul. It is a solid phone once you find a good ROM and software combination. But, if you are buying new right now, I do agree that you should get something else. The mogul is the previous generation, so I would try the current gen. phones like the diamond or raphael, that is if it is within your budget.
Or you can hope that HTC changes their mind about the touch HD.
Also a pervious 8525 user here. Same memory management hassles and hokey keyboard on mogul. Like the others say, not many phones were more fun to tinker with at the time it came out but now that the Touch Pro (Raphael) is out I also can't recommend a new mogul.
Make sure keyboard works properly.
Oh ok, seems good, but a Diamond and Touch Pro are very expensive aren't they?
I wanted to get Omnia, but wow, too expensive too.
Not a plan user btw.
I think as soon as Rapahel drops price, I'll get it, love its color, but a bit too pricey.

Yea wait... anything with 64mb RAM = trash
Trash? A little too far with that....
Let me just remind you users of the titan that have had it a year and a half or more like I have, we are a little sore with it at this point. The mogul with DCD's new roms is very solid. We developement junkies are just pissed because we don't have an accelererometer and can't do anything with manila 3d. The fact of the matter is it is a great device, just a little out dated but with the pricing now its worth it I think. Built in wifi, full touch capabilities, customize it to whatever you want, mobile office, built in gps receiver, come on guys. Don't you remember how ecstatic you were when you first brought this bad boy home. If you have not had one yet now is the time to get one when there are stable roms for it, there existed no such thing when I purchased it. And just remember the majority of smart devices can't touch the mogul. I will say though I am one to buy the badest mofo out there now in an attempt to stay ahead as far as possible. Lastely, I signed up for new plan and paid $200 for my girl's titan a year ago and just sold it for the same so how can I be mad at that (she wanted a touch, go figure, said it was cuter). Just buy the titan to get you through another year then waste your benji's next year. I know devices such as touch pro and diamond are much more advanced that the titan but my budies diamond performs like ****, beautiful, but slow as ****. I am waiting for htc to change its mind on the touch hd. Now theres a device.
Yeah, I think I'll just grab it and get the advantage of 3G, until a good device comes down in price.
As these new devices, I don't think either they're definitely worth to get like at this moment.
Like Sweeney Russ says, touch pro hd, there's a device.
ya I'm a little bitter about the memory and apps closing left and right.. other than that it's a lovely device... I guess it would be fine if you stick with older apps and don't get too involved with current developments like m2d. Honestly, if this thing had an extra 64mb (the tilt) I would be very content with it.
dark - you're buying it new? new contract or an upgrade?
I very much enjoy my XV 6800. Yes, if you are a tinkerer who has to plop in every possible app being developed and push the limits of new capability, then by definition any phone that is a year or more older will not be to your liking.
But if you want a phone that can be quite stable if you stabilize your apps and stop tinkering every week, and one that can essentially be a mini-laptop away from home, I know of nothing better than the Titan.
The hard keyboard is awesome, and the touch screen works great.
I guess the best way to describe the Titan is that it does everything decently. It doesn't shine as the best in any one area, but you can do anything with it.
Does it have the best video graphics? No. But I watch ripped movies and youtube videos just fine thank you.
It plays plenty of games. I can do actual work on it using the hard keyboard and Office Mobile.
And if you unlock the GPS, it even gets that much better.

The Mogul is just as bad; too many bugs, too slow, not enough RAM, no video drivers. I owned one for less than 6 months and sold it.
Now I have an equally buggy Treo 800w, but at least it's fast, has video drivers, and has plenty of RAM.

Had the mogul too, now the 800w. I can honestly say I don't miss ANYTHING about the mogul other than the battery life. I lived with so much crap for so long.
-The keyboard is bad, and gets worse with time
-BT is TERRIBLE, range and volume wise, buggy too
-Hated the slider form factor, the slow screen re-draw made me want to throw the phone
-Memory, MS should not allow WM phones to be sold with 6.1 and 64 megs. There were so many times I wanted to use the camera but had to reboot to get enough memory.
I could go on, but I won't. The 800w isn't perfect either, but is sooo much better.
Things Have Changed
First of all your using a treo as your defense. Second of all, what the hell are you talking about, you like the treo keyboard over the mogul keyboard? You must have tiny little fingers. I am running radio 3.37.20 and my bluetooth range is phenominal. I can be outside of the car and stay on it while my phone remains. And the audiopara cab actually makes the speaker so loud that it is embarrassing on the phone and my girlfriends little pink moto bt earpiece's speaker blew because the volume was too loud. And why so concerned with the memory? We all know the mogul should have had more, but the fact remains it runs everything I want it to and several apps at the same time. I don't know what you were running but the camera works outstandingly well and screen rotate function works instantly. IGO 8 and touchflo are the biggest memory hogs I have and they run seemlesly. The only explanation would be that you must have been running a stock rom. DCD 3.2.6 is as close to perfect as it gets. No freezing, no lagging, virtually no memory drain. Why are you in the titan forum anyway?
They dont even sell the mogul here anymore its all about the touch pro, which cost almost the same as the mogul did, around 550...get a diamond or a touch pro.
Also not true.....
I got a brand new mogul on ebay for $225, never opened.
So that time has come where my MDA vario III, is a bit worse for wear and it's time for something new.
Is the G1 up to the standard (and then some) of the Kaiser spec.
My main uses are heavy normal phone and sms use, tomtom, a bit of wifi, and other usual pda stuff like calculator, calandar, games etc. After a ROM flash (to Sleuths) it was great and not buggy or sluggish.
The kaiser let me down on call quality, bluetooth quality (with jawbone II still no good) and the speaker & camera were a joke.
Can the G1 fill the gap that is going to be left when I put the Kaiser to rest?
well, so far the G1 is a nice phone...good call quality...bad battery...wifi works well...as does SMS and such.
there is currently no tomtom for g1 but that will probably change next month. calculator calendar and games are better than on windows mobile and the touchscreen kick's the kaiser's @$$.
i'm not sure about bluetooth quality...i'd assume it's good although there is currently no support for bluetooth file transfers.
i think speaker and camera are pretty good.
I think It's a good upgrade. I upgraded from Kaiser myself.
The screen is better both resolution- and touchwise. Android really blew me away. As I use many Google services daily It's really important for me. I find the GPS accuracy better. There is now a tilt sensor just like a currently released phone should have. Mounting the microsdcard via UMS on Ubuntu still allows you to use the phone (probably the same with Windows). The trackball is really nice.
On the bad side; battery drains quickly, there is no videocalling camera (mainly thinking about the new Googletalk webcam feature), no neckstrap attachment hole available (I've solved it in my own way) and no possibility to use the phone as a modem like my Kaiser (afaik).
Currently I'm wondering why I'm not prompted about an OTA upgrade and all custom ROM links on the WIKI are dead.
edit:
Using CFW now and i figured out how to use it as a modem.
I had a kaiser, and I loved it. I since bought a Raphael, but work have just bought me a G1 to play with and I'm in love.
So right now, I've got a Raphael and a G1, and the G1 is so much better it's embarrasing. Just waiting for the battery life and range of apps to catch up.
Hey, it's all about the track ball. I also have an iPhone 3g to play with, and I find it inferior to the G1 but superior to the Raphael (and Kaiser). Hardware kb and track ball kick iPhone into touch for my money.
The browsing experience on the G1 is superb, the best of the lot for me.
However, until all the software I use on the Raphael or equivalent is released for Android, I'm not yet ready to ditch WM and the Raphael.
Luckily for me, I have all three toys to play with, but the G1 is my absolute favourite by far.
I have had the Kaiser, am currently using the Raphael and also have a G1. Personally the G1's battery life is the biggest drawback for me and that it does not support WPA Enterprise which my school uses everywhere and I have no cell reception on campus so the phone is basically useless to me when I am at school. If these problems were solved, I would definitely choose the G1 over the others.
Thanks for the responses people - much appreciated.
It seems like the G1 will be the way to go. I was considering the raphael before the G1 came out but it seems like it's really not enough of a step up from the Kaiser.
I will never go iphone - overpriced, underspecced, and I'm not paying over a $1000 a year for the most basic (cheapest too!) package AT&T have. They do look nice and the screen was a ground breaker but everyone I know that has one has to literally charge it everyday and the limitations are too many.
I know that's probably going to be the hadrdest thing to deal with switching to the G1 - I got about 4 days to a single full charge with my Kaiser.
Thanks again!!!!
I also had a kaiser and the g1 is superior by far.... windows mobile is still buggy no matter cooked rom is installed in the phone.... the phone that can give the g1 a run for its money is the blackberry storm and nokia e71 and n97....
I'm in the same boat.... could upgrade to the g1 next week and most likely get a reduction in rental too (customer of almost 3 years) but am stuck between this and the touch hd..... keep getting swayed both ways!!
Have to agree with Miguel though and I think he's swayed me to the g1... windows mobile is extremely buggy and slow so maybe I should jump ship now and consider coming back for Windows Mobile 7.........
i just upgrade my at&t tilt with a g1. After a couple of days i think was a good choice
the screen is amazing , the touch is another generation from the tilt .
i was missing htc connection manager but i replied it with aSetting.
the gps from the satellites not from the network is faster to fix the position than the tilt
the keyboard still good for me but the slide system on the top look kind of weak.
the only big problem is the battery , the tilt wasn't good ether but the g1 is worst.
i go to sleep with 50% and i weak-up with 20% left , maybe there is a way to close all the programs in the background ?
another is the tilting of the screen i have to say that i miss it.
and another issue is the network i don't know why the g1 lose more often the edge or 3g connection
Christian
The hardware is solid, the OS is generally better, but the software support isn't there yet. It does sport arguably the best web browser in the smartphone market right now (probably tied with iPhone), and the app support will probably pick up dramatically in January when the paid apps system goes live (of course, then you'll have to pay for stuff).
Very fun phone, but not really a productivity workhorse. I never used my WinMo phones for productivity anyway, so I don't really miss it, but the lack of decent games is kind of a bummer.
got myself a n97 and i put my HTC Touch HD up for sale! this was by far the best cellphone forum!
how does it compare?
Why did you sell? I really like my HD, although not a fanboy, and always like to know how new phones compare
(Worst thing about getting a contract in the UK is knowing you've got 18 months to go until you next unwrap a shiny new toy!)
nokia
If you want the N97 you are going to buy the N97 no mater what phone you have now.. eg the touch HD .
The touch HD ( fro me ) is a fab phone, and does everything that I want it to do .
I have all the fixes etc on my Orange ROM . and it works fab .
I have done the nokia thing.. had a N95 , N73 etc.. and they were not " for me " the touch has it's downfalls.. but so does every phone.....
Best of luck with your new phone.
One thing to consider though. Whenever I am looking into purchasing a new phone, I am also looking at the help forums, backup, rom upgrades, improvements, features etc and IMHO nothing compares to having xda developers!!
I did away with my Touch HD and got my first iPhone 3G 32gb. Man I love how fast and silky smooth everything is. The user interface puts anything from windows mobile to shame. Even running at Edge speed is now acceptable on safari browser. Video and music plays buttery smooth with 0 hick-ups unlike the HD or touch pro or diamond.
Oh and btw because of the new CPU chip and ram boost there is not much of a need for multitasking..all applications open instantly with no waiting even games load lightning fast. Also it does perform some multitasking. For instance you can play music while in most other applications like google maps etc. Also when you go back into another application it remembers right where you left off. Have seen no need for true multitasking yet...there is always jailbreaking if I really want it, but I truly never used it much of the HD accept for playing music while I type an email or text, which the iPhone does this too which suprised me, because I thought it did not multitask in any shape or form.
Also installing a free ATT file you can access free USB tethering to a laptop or desktop. no unlocking or jailbreaking required.
The screen is much better than I thought it would be in fact its better than the HD's in many ways accept for pure resolution, which the HD doesn't make much use of in TouchFlo3D where it streches wallpaper to VGA res. Also in the HD's opera browser you can't even read web page text unless you zoom in. The iphone's browser text can be read without zooming.
There is absolutely nothing I miss from the Touch HD or windows mobiloe since owning my first iPhone 3GS.
Only cons I can mention in comparison to WM is less customizability unless you want to jailbreak it, which I don't for now. Also battery life is not as good as the Touch HD, but it may be more so because I've been heavily using it since I got it. Also battery is not broken in yet.
byebye !!!
i came from nokia.. i think it is fairly laggy.. unless n97 is better?? however do u have as many tweaks freeware as XDA?

I have had 2 iphones, 8gb, 8gb 3g and i have tried the new 3gs (college has one).
Use it for a while and after a couple of weeks the weakness shows through, its a really nice interface, it just works, but so does a normal mobile with buttons.
the 3gs is quicker, the camera is almost as bad, the screen is the same, basically i would wait for the newer revision with a higher res screen next year.
once you realise you cannot just modify it (even with jailbreaking) then you get frustrated and wonder if its really worth the £45.00 a month tariff.
I am not getting into a slanging match as its not worth it, I have tried to jump ship but something keeps me returning back to the windows fold.

I have to agree with you there dude, I tried jumping ship but couldn't due to the sheer amout of customisation/personalisation you can do with WM. No offence to all the iphone fanboys (although you will probably take offence) but the iphone is a phone for fashion victims, WM is for techies/pros.
That's my 2 pence, if we keep going maybe we can get a couple of quid together
You guys say good bye and I say hello. I just got a HD and moving from the Touch Pro. I had a 3GS for a while, but after you get past the "ooh shiny" and "omg it's so sleek" phase, all that's left is buttons...I had over 200apps and I had to scroll and scroll and scroll. Not customizable at all.. :| And the keyboard. Horrible. I hate qwerty. How come no one came up with compact qwerty for that thing? And why, oh why can't I replace the battery! I don't want to carry a charger or a battery pack. I want to carry batteries And did I mention the camera sucks? And most of the features they added WinMo already had? I'm glad to be going back to WinMo and besides, TF3D2 v2 should be coming out any day now
cu soon back here on xda-devs when you're done with the proprietary Hellbian OS of your new one!

This is exactly why I sold my iPhone 3G and kept the HD. At first, I liked the beautiful interface, but after some weeks, I got really frustrated because the iPhone can't do basic tasks like exchanging files, downloading files from the internet or ftp servers and lots of other basic stuff I could do with Windows Mobile, even with Jailbreak apps that did not work most of the time (like iBluetooth, Backgrounder...).
This is what Adam Z Lein at pocketnow.com said about the Palm Pre today, and the same things could be said about the iPhone. It is just one example, but it describes very well my experiences with the iPhone and why I switched back to the Touch HD in the end (and won't buy an iPhone again):
itolson said:
This was good news. However, since I didn't have the USB cable with me, I would have to find another way to transfer the security certificate to the Palm Pre. On Windows Mobile, there are a number of ways to wirelessly access and transfer files. Normally my first try would be to beam the file via Bluetooth, however the Pre does not support Bluetooth file transfer profiles. On Windows Mobile, I could also access my network file shares over WiFi using the File Explorer and copy files to my device that way. Or I could log into a server using the Remote Desktop Client, map my phone's memory as a network drive and copy files that way. Or I could use Live Mesh beta to syncronize files to my device over any network. The Pre isn't capable of any of those methods.
It turns out, I had to browse to the certificate on my HTC Touch Diamond with File Explorer, then send that as a file attachment to myself on email. The only other option would be to go get the USB cable. Opening the certificate from the email address installed it directly, but I was unable to save the file to the Palm Pre's file system if I needed it in the future.

Is it possible to play DivX movies on iPhone or unpack ZIP or RAR archive which is include in mail attachments?
Is it possible to downgrade to other firmware with iTunes 8.2 or something else... e.g. Baseband or other complicated stuff.
How to play flash movies in Safari?
You get the MMS.
Good luck with new toy.
I think this may be a no-brainer. I spend so much on my Phone bill, that ATT is going to give me a Focus for free. (or one of many other phones of my choice).
I just got my Tilt 2 is running the exact way I want it to. Should I upgrade? How happy are you with WINMO 7 and Focus?
Yes I know it's a freebe, but if ATT is planning on coming out with another phone, I don't want to use up my free turn now. That's the only thing holding me back. Thanks.

If you have the Tilt working the way you want it to, why would you switch? The Focus has functionality pretty much on the level of a severely retarded iPhone. It's nowhere near and nothing like the old Windows Mobile. Mine is sitting on my desk without a sim while I wait to see if Microsoft is actually serious or if I'll be getting an Android phone this summer. I've actually used my old Fuze more recently than the Focus because even tho it was slow, unstable and barely usable half the time, the other half of the time it did almost anything I needed to get done.
I am a previous Tilt and Tilt2 owner. I am now a Focus owner. The limitations of WP7 are out there and pretty well known. If any of those are critical to you, then don't switch. If you want a completely refreshing experience, no memory problems, apps that actually close when you close them, and not having to worry about constantly tweaking your phone, go with WP7. I don't regret it for a minute. Everybody is so worried about c&p (which is coming) and multitasking... there is something to be said about the WP7 experience. It has really grown on me. I go days without a soft reset. Marketplace occasionally hangs, which is my only complaint. The beautiful thing is that they are still on the first release. The most under talked about feature of WP7 is the People hub. It is really amazing how simple it is yet how it integrates all my contacts. I'm also a big OneNote user and I love this version. I do like a hardware keyboard, but this soft keyboard is just as good as the iPhone. Critics like to say the iPhone's keyboard is better because how could something be as good as an iPhone? Well, it actually is. I had an iPhone between my Tilt and Tilt2 and the WP7 keyboard is just as good. WP7 is not perfect (yet) but it's a great start. I don't even think about my Tilt2 anymore. I figured I'd buy the best of the first set of phones (Focus) early, then wait for a good second gen one to come out and get that in a year. I don't regret my decision for a second and would never go back.
FUZE
I moved from my FUZE to a Focus on December 27th and have never looked back. Like you, I got my FUZE where I wanted it with a custom Energy ROM and lots of tweaks and apps. It was an ongoing process that I had learned to live with. I had the Focus for 4 days before I swapped the SIM out of the FUZE. In fact, my FUZE is still on the charger.
All of this crap about C&P and multi-tasking is a tempest in a teapot. I haven't missed either and I use my phone hours each day. It is smooth, seemless and everything just works like WM 6.5 should have. I can't explain here what I love about WP7, it would take too long. You have to experience it to really understand.
This summarized my thoughts exactly.

The Focus is a great phone. To say that it's as functional as a severely retarded iPhone is extremely shortsighted and entirely subjective. If you find usb thumb drives to be too cumbersome for mass storage, need wifi internet sharing (the Focus tethers great with my Win 7 x64 laptop via usb), vcard support, or to send video via mms (although the camera in my TP2 sucks so bad I never used it) then stick with the tp2.
That being said, the Focus is MUCH faster and way more stable. Even oc'ed to 748 MHz my tp2 was extremely laggy, especially when sliding out the keyboard. I never thought I'd be able to do w/o a hardware keyboard, but, this one is fantastic. Unlike the iPhone, the auto-correct is right 95% of the time.
I, personally, can live w/o the missing feature for the time being.
Also, you may want to wait for the LTE rolling out later this year. If you're in one of the cities that will get it, it should be much faster than the current 3G and WP May introduce phones supporting it by the end of the year.
A lot of really nifty new hardware got announced at CES this past week. But then, if you're willing to wait, something better is always going to continually be coming down the pipe. If you're looking at what's out right now, you can do much worse than a Focus.
Personally, I much prefer using my Focus over my old Tilt2. About the only thing I really miss is the ability to connect to IRC. That one does irk me. Other than that, I really am digging the new toy.
I went from an HTC Wizard to the Tilt - I never got the Tilt2 - to a Samsung Focus. Only rarely do I miss a physical keyboard. I miss some of the apps - SPB Wallet, Vito Audio Notes Touch and Mobipocket Reader. I miss syncing Office docs but I don't miss Activesync issues. Occasionally I miss the Tilt's scroll wheel and Dpad but I'm getting over it.
The Focus' screen is so beautiful and the WP7 interface is really a joy. I love this phone - it's fast and responsive and pretty as hell. I know that I'll find new apps to replace my old ones in time and I'll adjust to the differences.
My advice is that if you have programs on your Tilt2 that you can't live without then you should think twice before moving on. But if you go into a store and take a look at the Focus you might just get one anyway.
As mentioned before if you're into social networking the People Hub just handles that integration really well. Also if you use Windows Live Photo Gallery Online and or Facebook for pictures the Pictures hub handles this great.
I'm not a gamer so the Xbox live thing doesn't do it for me.
So, I love the Focus but I'm waiting for the apps to catch up.
Here are my two choices.
1. go from tilt2 now to focus
2. wait and use my freebe on another phone in the future that ATT will carry.
???

It's not short-sighted, it's the way it is. I bought a Focus the day they went on sale but every day brought about at least a couple situations that the iPhone and Fuze could easily meet and the Focus had nothing. If it did any less Walmart could package it with a prepaid card and stick it on the rack with the $25 Nokia phones that come with $30 of talk time. I don't give a damn about copy/paste, the thing that made me put the sim card back into the iPhone was that the camera doesn't save it's settings. How asinine is that? Doesn't anyone at Microsoft even use a camera? Didn't anyone bother testing it? And *I'm* the short-sighted one? That's why I don't buy that rubbish about how it doesn't have any useful features because "it's two months old". And as hard as it was to believe, the browser is actually WORSE than the WinMo browser which, in the very least, could play audio and video streams. I'm half surprised WP7 didn't come with Trumpet Winsock to make a data connection. WP7 is stable because there's practically nothing to crash or freeze. WinMo is fast, too, when it has nothing to do and a 1 GHz processor to do it on. So if I had a Tilt2 and wanted something that was actually responsive and approached the same level of functionality, I'd get an iPhone or a decent Android phone for, I'd guess, the next year given how long it took Microsoft to get the current rendition of WP7 out the door.

Not saving camera settings is just dumb (I seriously doubt this will be an issue for long). The browser is far better on WP7. It accesses and renders pages faster than my wife's iPhone, let alone the TP2 (IE, Opera, Opera Mini, Skyfire, etc.). At least it WILL support flash compared to the iPhone. Can you edit Office docs on the iPhone? Kinda. But, the Office hub on the Focus is considered to add great functionality to the phone by many people. TP2 can do some of this, too, if you don't mind the lag. Typing is far more accurate for me on the Focus, coming from a hardware keyboard. Believe it or not, that affects the functionality of the phone, at least for me. The Focus can tether without additional cost. If you care about music the Zune Pass is outstanding. The Focus might not have much functionality for you, perhaps, but many others would disagree. Then again, maybe all of us happy Focus users are just retarded Walmart patrons.
All I have to say is I loved my Tilt2! I got a Focus with my upgrade. I figured I keep my Tilt2 to fall back to if I didn't like it. Needless to say I loved the Focus so much I gave...did you hear me... gave my Tilt 2 because I couldn't even justify putting a price on it. That's how different the Focus is. I've read all the complaints and ironically it's the exact same ones people gave as a reason the Iphone would fail. Hell I even mocked Iphone owners. Well we know how that turned out.
As far the browser, here in New Orleans(signals vary in every region) WP7 IE is faster than any WM browser I ever had Opera 9,9.5,9.7, 9.7 with Flash,10 beta,10 Mini,Skyfire, UCWeb6,6.7,7,7 release2, NetFront 3.4,3.5,4,4 updated, Bolt,Iris, Pocket IE, Uzard. The sad thing is all of these damn browsers were installed on my phone because none were good enough. With the Focus I released much like the Iphone people I mocked, I don't need most of that bullcrap. I don't know if the IP4 has a different browser version than the 3GS, but WP7 IE is just as fast and accurate. as my nephews 3GS.
As for saving camera settings, I never taught of this till you mentioned it. Now that you mentioned it, it sounds crazy to me to save the settings. I constantly take pictures with my phone for work. Unless I'm in the exact same conditions then saving the settings would be just a big pain. Obviously, someone in the Microsoft meeting must have mentioned this. Damned if they do damned if they don't.

You still are using a fixed set of settings, the default ones. If you are OK with those is no problem, but a user should still be able to customize the settings and then save them instead of always going back to default.
I am in my first day of "playing" with a Focus, coming from a Tilt 2. Sometimes I think I should have not started.
I love the simplicity but I miss the flexibility.
So far the biggest con for me is the small font used in various places that I find hard to read after using the phone for a while. Maybe it is time for glasses but get them only for the Focus? Too bad the font size cannot be adjusted other than the places where zooming works. Speaking of zooming I miss the reflow of text, so now after zooming I constantly have to scroll sideways to read a page.
When I got the Tilt 2 I thought I was going to use the slide out keyboard more. Turned out that I rarely used it so that was not an issue moving to the Focus. I do find the Focus keyboard very sensitive. The slightest touch or even coming close enough to the screen without actually touching registers on the touch screen. Even though the Focus screen keyboard keys are very close in size to the Tilt 2 screen keyboard I have lots of typos with the Focus. I guess though that this is something that gets overcome with time.
WiFi... cannot connect to hidden networks??? Please Microsoft, reconsider this.
Once connected to WiFi what is there to do other than using WiFi for data instead of 3G? I cannot connect to my Windows Home Server to save pictures and other documents or to load some documents for the road. I know I can go thru Skydrive but that's extra steps and maybe I have documents I would rather not upload to a third party server.
I would like a common email tile on the home screen instead of individual tiles for each account. The visible home screen is limited. HTC Sense does this beatifully.
Various apps that I use save their data somewhere in the phone's memory. I would like to be able to back it up at least by copying it to my laptop or home server. I do not see any sort of file management at the OS level where I could do this. Some apps save their data in the cloud... again a third party server.
But I do have another 25 days or so to play with the Focus. I'll see how things change.
Started with a Tilt --> iPhone --> Tilt2 and now Focus. The phone does have its quirks but I believe the pros outweigh the cons. The onscreen keyboard easily rivals or surpasses that of the iPhone. Transition between programs is fluid and seemless. The link with Xbox Live is awesome!
This is only day 2 of playing with this guy and I'm already hooked.
Just upgraded from the Tilt 2 (prior to that I used the original Tilt and then the Fuze) to the Samsung Focus -- and I will not be looking back. Finally a phone that works when I need it to! I'll trade a few, very minor limitations that I can work around for the lightning fast responsiveness of the WP7.
I can't count the number of times with the Tilt/Fuze/Tilt 2 that I stood outside an elevator needing to quickly look up a meeting room number or sitting in a meeting and needing to look up a phone number only to have it slowly lumber through the process at a snails pace with people waiting all around me in frustration. I need a phone that works in real world - real time - business situations. So I really value the simplicity and responsiveness of the Focus.
It's a keeper.
I also came from the long line of HTC phones and the iPhone3Gs. I upgraded to the Focus the day it hit the streets and as others have said I have never looked back. I do miss some of the customizing and some of the apps but in time they will come. I knew the limitations going in and while some of them have been a pain the pros way outweigh the cons. If MS keeps their word and gets the updates out and keeps them coming they have a big winner on their hands.

My sentiments exactly. As a former Fuze owner, the only thing I miss are the physical keyboard, and specific apps. I purchased my Fuze the day it came out, and used it heavily during that time. I still find myself clicking on the search button to end a call, but that's a habit I'll break soon enough.
The keyboard is probably the best soft-keyboard I've tried, and I'm still learning little tips to make it even easier. That said, I really do miss the hard-keys.
The only other area of concern are the apps. I had a number of apps that I used daily, which sadly aren't yet available for Win7, and possibly may never be available.
Still, this phone is just amazing. It is extremely responsive to gestures, screens load quickly, and the screen will blow your socks off. Everyone who gets their hands on it just love it.
Now I purchased mine off contract on eBay for an incredibly good price. I doubt I would take on another contract with a phone this early in its development. If I were you, I'd wait it out a little longer. The Tilt2 is a good phone especially with custom ROMs loaded.
Wait until after the MWC in February. Some new WP7 phones might be announced then.
