X1 Successes and failures - XPERIA X1 General

I wanted to start an absolute thread that would highlight all the successes and failures of thirdparty CAB installs, Panels, Porting, ROM COOKING, Performance improvements and issues for all things X1 / Xperia
The idea being that new handset users have a single thread so they can get cooking, tweaking and tinkering as soon as possible.
My own experience was trial and error. Installing cabs, bricking devices, learning how to unbrick etc etc bla bla
Any way lets see how we get on
Please post you results here so new owners can get cracking
thanks

Auto Unlock and Lock for WVGA
Problem.
There are limted options to having an autolock or a soft lock button on the standard SE X1 panels. Only the Xperia today screen has the option of having a touch lock, but it is not an auto lock. Ideally you would need an application that would automatically lock the device after a period of time and at the touch of a couple of buttons unlock.
Ease of use and a knowledge that the phone has actually locked is key. I am tired of making phone calls from my pocket!
I have tried a number of Slide to locks, S2U2 similar to the IPHONE lock. It is actually a good way of dealing with the locking and unlock of the phone. Simple and fast.
Some worked some didn't
Ilock didnt work all the time. Issues with distorted images with full screen setup.
Solution that has worked on a Standard SE ROM for the UK
http://s2u2.eqvipage.dk/S2U2-download-1.37-VGA.html
This has a number of specific settings for a good and trustworthy auto lock. The auto lock can be configured to be full screen with images of your choice or default S2U2 images. A number of settings are also avaliable when it comes to determining the power settings. Think of it as a windows screen saver in XP or Vista.
Images, Timeouts and locks etc
I am pleased with the result of the lock on the X1 and others in this forum are now making skins for S2U2

New: Quick access to backlight brightness

Hi folks,
When I'm using my PDA at night, I turn the backlight right down, so it doesn't wake the girlfriend (and blind me!) This requires many steps: Start->Settings->System->Backlight->Brightness->Grab stylus->Drag on screen.
I've written a simple little util which pops up a backlight brighness trackbar, plus 2 buttons to instantly minimize/maximize. You can download it from here. There's no installer - just drag the exe to your device, then create a shortcut to your Start Menu / Programs folder. Only tested on my Universal under WM6 - should work on any HTC (non-phone) device AFAIK.
Personally, I've attached it to the backlight button on the front of the universal, so to minimize backlight brightness I just tap that button, then tap the left softkey button.
Hopefully some of you find this useful - if so, lemme know! If you have any problems with it, I'll try to sort them out.
I've also made the source code available. It's a little C# class. Feel free to use it for whatever you want.
Hi,
I was looking something like that. But when I tested at my PPC, HP 6815, it did not work? Could you please help me ?
Regards,
Great work, jp_howard!
Very useful. I'm sure it may also run on many other mobile devices.
Will have a closer look at the sources
Thanks for this nice tool!

hi jp_howard,
pls allow me a couple things:
1. it does not work while my o2 atom is cradled. maybe it will work if on battery power. let me test later, once i disconnect then get back here to update.
2. would it be possible to map it to the volume keys? this is useful for me because one of the major problems of o2 atom is the battery life, so i am force to always set the backlight its minimal setting to converse power. the problem is when i'm outdoor, i would not see the screen anymore due to the low brightness i mentioned, so it would be great if i could access the brightness level by the use of only the volume keys. anyway, i don't change the volume that often during calls...
3. lastly, i would also like to start programming in c# like what you did here. would it be too much too ask, if you point me in the right direction, so i could start programming too? btw, i'm basically a web developer, with formal training in c# windows programming as well, but not very well verse with CE programming. i've tried the hello world in vs2005 already but i'm still far from mobile programming. thanks.

Slide2Gesture?

Maybe this has been discussed before but no one tried to develop the idea.
well instead of S2U, i prefer to have a gesture that i choose to unlock the device... so no one can unlock it other than I... if im dont have these programming skills
anyone is able to do it?! it can be a modified version of A_C's S2U2...

whatever G2U ...
I like the idea of this
Cool thinkin...
No passworded needed, just a gesture.
Someone needs to copy the Microsoft Origami thingy where you unlock by tapping a certain sequence on a picture of your choice, with more security gained by moving to a smaller grid size.
ell, honestly, if you delete the images from your S2U2 directory, that should accomplish the same thing. You would just have to remember where to slide from. Or use your DPAD.
lawmangrant, i think you're missing a handy side-effect of having G2U: you can still view the today screen. I imagine that you can view the today screen, but not be able to do anything until you gesture. If anyone uses PointUI, it's kinda like the builtin lock. You see the main screen until you tap, upon which the lock screen comes up. It's pretty nice (personally use s2u2 instead) but G2U has potential uses.
It's a good idea, especially if you don't have the instructions right on the screen, it's a good locker to keep people out of your phone.
It should be Gesture2Unlock (or G2U for short) and it was discussed in the Kaiser forum here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=362231&highlight=gesture
A_C, the author or S2U2 was contacted, but he didn't think he could do it, as you can see from the thread...
I still like the idea.
I have a program in mind that does exactly what you want...
hm.. not exactly...
you have to tap to 4 or 5 different points on your touchscreen to unlock your phone...
but I don´t know the name at the moment....
I´ll try to find it....
This is a great idea.......
strange !!! walking down the street today i had this exact thought
may be some day!!!!
This was good, but doesnt work anymore...
http://softava.com/archive/pp/otp_features.html#
interesting. Would be very similair to taking a biometric of a persons signature. presumably tho one wouldn't want the signature to be drawn as you gesture2unlock, but instead "draw" onto an invisible notepad.
its no easy process (have researched biometrics) as the important part if the learning/recognition algorythm which will probably involve some neural network coding (ouch but fun).
What you need is something like this!!!
http://bip.golana.pub.ro/~mmihai/sign/index.html.
I've emailed Mihail about this (the author), pointing him to this post. I will post his reply as soon as it arrives.
Here's my email:
Dear Mihail,
I came across your website whilst looking for clues as to how we might implement a fellow forum contributor’s idea on xda-developers.com (here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=370632&page=2)
His idea was to unlock a pda using a gesture on the touch screen. To my mind that mean signature which lead me to search for some algorithms on the net. Your implementation was particularly interesting as it seems quick to operate, has low memory footprint and could work on a low spec machine (such are many pda’s).
I was wondering if you implemented such a system, or if the algorithm you have developed has been release for others to use, commercially or non-profit.
Your input into the discussion would be highly valuable.
Best wishes
Sean

I see pluses and minuses to this approach as opposed to using s2u2 with the deleted slide graphics.
If you want true privacy when someone picks up your phone, you wouldn't really want them to see your today screen especially if it contains appointment and tasks info, etc. That's where I think using a modified s2u2 would be better.
If you don't have appointment info on your screen or nothing that is "dynamic" or constantly changing except the clock, then you could skin s2u2 to "match" your today screen and place the clock exactly where it is on your today screen. For example if you have HTC home as your today screen, you can skin s2u2 clock to match the position and font as HTC home and then take a screenshot and modify it to a wallpaper, cutting out the clock par. The tricky part is the missed call and sms counter. S2u2 has the potential to disply that info but to replicate that look of htc home would require major changes, probably requiring A_C's help?
Of course if our devices had the horsepower, we could modify s2u2 to just take the screenshot of the today screen and load it as a wallpaper everytime it starts up, maybe a mortscript, but it would probably would be too slow realistically.
Im glad that u liked the idea... A_C said that he doesnt have the skills to do it.. but im sure he can help...
i don't mind if the appointments info appears on the screen, but i prefer no one can access all other applications... typing a password takes time... especially when activated side by side with S2U2...
Why a signature recognition? How about a gesture system like the one found in firefox plugins:
https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/39
https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefox/addon/12
They're based on eight directions - four sideways and four diagonal.
Directions are defined as:
U - up
D - down
L - left
R - right
7 - up/left
9 - up/right
1 - down/left
3 - down/right
So to program a gesture you just need to input the directions of strokes it consists of.
For example URDL would mean drawing a rectangle starting from bottom left, and then going up, right, down, left. You can also describe more complicated gestures that way - R2D1L7U9R would mean drawing a circle starting from its top point and moving right.
In my opinion biometric algorithms don't make much sense, since they would need a styluys to work - try to draw your signature using a finger
Simplified gestures should work with finger as well as stylus, and should still provide more than enough security.
Great minds think alike.
What I wanted was a way to use touch to unlock the device very easily without it being easy to copy. I also wanted data to be safe should the device be reset.
I thought of using the standard S2U and just using a skin which didn't make it clear how to unlock so as to deter casual snoops.
There must be a way to do this! If no-one comes up with something soon then I'll dust off my programming books and give it a try.
the new Ftouch Flo a.k.a FtouchSL has some new gesturing features ( like corners )..maybe this would be useful

Automatic lock device

Hello, me does not know how to too much or put that then I puts it here.
I look for an application for locked automatically the device at the end of defined time.
Kind S2U but widely lighter which makes only the locking as when we rest on locked which is has the origin present in WM.
Thank you.
go to start > settings > Today and select Device lock..now return to today screen and you will notice Device Lock...enjoy
This method is not automatic... and we cannot adjust the time
See my post on FM lol !
I saw but it does not work
I would like something like this too. S2U actually keeps my sbp time from working correctly (mutes sound.....which for alarms kinda defeats the purpose)
S2U is too heavy to a lot of level (RAM, battery...)
try these mini S2U analogs. They're pretty small.
mini S2U analogs?? What is it?
Hi,
Here is mini S2U2.
@+
Hi, I personally use a past version of s2u2 called Slide and I launch with batterystatus everytime the screen turned off. That method allow recover the RAM used for the Slide because this program isnt run in background.

[APP] WM6.5 SmartLock / WM6.1 csdevctrl low memory wm device lock

Try it just get this from others forum and it's free....
Auto Lock v6.06 (CSDEVCTRL)
The locking can be activated at the following events:
1. After a specified period of idle time (no screen tapping or touching the keyboard).
2. After the device has waken up.
3. During a call ("In-Call Locking" Partial or Full).
4. Gesture Left or Right to unlock
WM6.5 SmartLock
1 WM 6.5 use new lockscreen . gray when in wm6.1 or older
2 lockscreen when startup
3 lockscreen when standy
it works well after reboot.
Auto Lock v6.06 (CSDEVCTRL) looks very nice... many options in setup as
executing application after unlock (with command line parameters), locking keyboard, unlocking while slide-out (for raphael i guess), setting right sip, flashing, vibra, etc. ... rly Nice...
but for me LockMeLite is better... (with build in - slide 2 answer option while ringing) cheers
thanks for upload... !
lucasjohny You're the best! Thx. for find this apps.
Hi,
please can you tell me what im ment to do with this?
do i need to install the cabs from the 2 links or just the autolock cab?
Thanks in advance
MG
I'd follow the links to the main thread as both of these apps are on XDA and both have been updated significantly since the OP started the thread.
There are also much more in depth descriptions.
The attached cab files are also outdated. Don't use either of them if you want the latest/greatest.
very nice app!!! I have wanted this for a long time
http://thewingster.com/smartlock.aspx
Thank you very much
I'm wondering whether I can disable the tiny and short sound when I receive a call during the device is locked and turned to silent or vibrate mode? I don't want to disable all sounds of this app, but just this because when the device is turned to silent, it shouldn't make any sounds, should it?
The lock sound is off when I turn the device to silent mode.

two little apps: automatic rotation & wifi/display stay active - update 28/12

Hello
The Mega is my first smartphone, and thanks to xda I found lots of usefull info and apps to customize it just like i want
I think now it's time to share some apps I did mostly for my own use, but maybe usefull for some other people.
Well, here are two simple applications:
RotateMon
- The first, "rotatemon" (stupid name I know... ) is designed to run invisible in background and simply rotate the screen to landscape if one the following apps are launched: sms /mms ; opera mobile 10 and notes (notes.exe)
When you exit the app, the screen is restored to previous orientation. (meaning if you already are in landscape, you will stay in landscape)
I did this app because i couldn't found something doing this the way i want. I know there are mortscript scripts to do this, but not exactly like this. (and there's a problem with tmail.exe with this method, because mortscripts checks if a windows exist, but sometimes tmail.exe runs in background with the same window title "SMS / MMS" as the active window, so we must check if it is really active or in background...)
I know it's possible too to assign a long key press to the action "rotate sceeen", but I was tired of long pressing this key everytime i launched opera or the sms program...
Well just try it if you want, and let me know what you think about it, it's very usefull for me, maybe for you too
You can launch it at startup like I did (for example with sktools or something equivalent).
Please understand that I did it for myself, so it's "customized" for me (the apps that are monitored to trigger the rotation). If it is usefull for someone else I'll be happy to provide a more "user friendly" version (with the ability to configure what apps are monitored for example). Don't hesitate to ask
StayAlive -update 28/12/2010: now with a nice interface, install cab, more user friendly -
Another very simple program, designed to keep wifi "alive" even when the device is in sleep mode. It's a simple switch: ON/OFF, based on the registry key Comm\BCMSDDHD1\Parms\HTCKeepWifiOnWhenUnattended , you can switch the "StayAlive state" when wifi is on or off, doesn't matter, and the state is keep after a soft reset.
This tool can the display alive too, it provides a simple switch On/OFF to keep the display alive (doesn't prevent locking, well sometimes it locks and sometimes not, don't really know why..., but the screen stay on). Please note that the screen will not stay on at full backlight level, it will stay on at the "lower" backlight level (to prevent too much power drain...)
Ps:Sorry for my poor english
how to remove this software from phone?

You just have to delete the program folder. If it's running, kill it with a taskmanager before of course (or soft reset). If you put it in your startup, remove it before, then kill the process or soft reset, then delete the folder.
No modifications are made to the system

Hi seb3773 I like you rotatemon very much. It is what I need, but since I have used Swype I had to turn it off. When the screen rotate my swype keyboard don't rescale well and the screen is cut out on te right side.
I would be grateful if you could disable sms rotation in your program?
or maybe some "user friendly" version above-mentioned?
I'm proud if it is usefull for you too A more user friendly version is coming soon, as i'm actually unemployed , i've plenty of time to do it. I intend to program a configuration interface with some nice features. It will be ready in 1/2 days
Great work
good works, man.
I wonder whether you can add-in one more switch not to connect 3G or smthng.
I'm having problem with that. When i accidentally press on browser icon, it start connecting to 3G network and i got to pay data charges.
It would be good if we can turn off. Thanks
