HD virtual keyboard stuck in compact - Touch HD General

Strange problem: I've search google and here at xda, but find nothing even close.
Discovered the answer in the event others experience this strange situation: Download "sipchange" (google). It nailed this perfectly.
The keyboard defaulted to compact mode about a week after I received the phone. I hard reset (ROM version 1.14.405.3) and did not install any applications, anticipating perhaps a program conflict was my problem. After two days is did the same thing.
The only thing I've tried is changing input methos in the settings node. After I choose full QWERTY (or any other keyboard selection) and select OK, the settings default on compact.
Anyone know the registry setting to force the keyboard to full QWERTY? Maybe this is a known issue....
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Still no joy - I installed Touchpal 3.5, however the in input selection for Touchpal 3.5 will not take either.
Edit: Cleared ROM - flashed firmware. This defaults to full QWERTY. I then installed Touchpal 3.5, but my HD would not change to the touchpal keyboard after selecting options and rebooting.
Might this may be a hardware/keyboard mapping problem?

Yes, I have issues with this too.
I use two particular input methods: Block recognizer (I'm an ex-Palm user) and SBP Keyboard. I have to select which to use, using the input selection pop-up menu, which appears next to the keyboard icon under the keyboard.
Problem is I want to customise that menu as the default options (Touch input settings, Phone Keypad, Compact QWERTY, full QWERTY and other input methods>) only leave room for one other option.
Any ideas ?
Many thanks.

Physical keys stopped inputting letters; numbers work fine (16 keys)

Hi all!
I bought the Touch Dual last week and since then have been doing tens of installs/uninstalls to check what apps are out there etc (AE Button Plus was one of them).
I remember when i got it I could enter both TEXT and numbers from the sliding out number pad. I used the *XT9 button to differentiate between ABC, abc, XT9 - text input methods.
Now pressing the *XT9 buttons doesnt do anything anywhere - all i can enter with my kaypad are corresponding numbers.
I must have removed/unchecked something in the settings, but what?
Thanks in advance!

Yes!! I too had that problem... It seems that after installing about 5 apps, this will happen. I hard-resetted about 5 times now and i still dont know what exactly causes this trouble
I have the same problem too.. I've posted it under this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=384160
Does anyone know how to solve it?
Solved
Fixed it. The alphabetical input from the hardware 16-keyboard is back in SMS/Word Mobile/Texting programs!!
Just go to Start > Programs > PDA Settings > ROM Settings > Enable T9.
This makes the hardware *xT9 button allow to switch between ABC, abc, #12, T9.
PS: Im using this ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364335). The problem occured after I was using the above ROM for a while, and it was fixed without reflashing anything.
Hope this helps!

is there like a registry fix for this problem instead of flashing an entire rom?
@sebastlim
there's no need to reflash anything. with my Niki Project 6.1 ROM, when the problem started, i just went to Just go to Start > Programs > PDA Settings > ROM Settings > Enable T9.

Yes, but that options is only available on that rom, others dont have it
And even doing that doesnt change anything on my niki rom.
Until I turned it off and back on again. D'oh!
Problem with physical slide out keyboard and soft input panel keyboards
I have a 20 key version touch dual and had this problem as well - and unlike the other posts, I had not installed any additional apps. The WM 6.1 version CE OS 5.2.19716.1.1.0.
Here is what is happenening:
1. The slide out physical keyboard will type only the numbers when the numeric keys are pressed. The alphabet keys on the sides q/w, a/s, z/x, o/p, ,/l etc only input the first letter and dont cycle on to the second letter [eg only q comes up - you cannot bring on w] and the xt9 stops functioning. Pressing the alt or sym/*/xt9 key does nothing other than typing up *.
2. The two soft input panel keyboards (touch keyboard 20 and touch keypad 12) revert to a qwerty keyboard and dont switch to a xt9 mode.
3. I tried using the Start-->Programs-->PDA Settings-->>check T9 option. It works but erratically. Often, it reverts back when the PDA is turned off and on [not soft reset]. When I go back to PDA settings and look, the T9 option is checked and yet the behaviour was non T9. I checked off and checked on T9 -->> works again. Sliding out the physical keypad seems to preserve the xt9 most of the time. Erratic..
I will try to install the fix from HTC
the difinite solution
Check whether PCM keyboard is installed and if yes, uninstall it. The problem will be solved!
If you install the appropriate version of EzInput (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426281 ) it should re-enable your hardware keys.
Good luck!

Touchpal freezing

Hi,
I use Touchpal V3.5 and i absolutely love it, if you haven't tired it I highly recommend it, especially good is the mixed language input and I actually type faster using touchpal+gsen in landscape mode than I did with a hardware keyboard (a worry that almost prevented me from buying this marvelous device). I do have two little niggles that would be great if i could overcome somehow:
1. Setting Touchpal to the default keyboard does not stick after a restart/reset. I have to change the keyboard each time i start up. I tried SIP Change but it doesn't seem to have an option for running at start-up....anyone know if i can get at the registry somewhere or something?
2. When I first open it, if i try to type in Chinese before using English, it freezes in a bad way, disabling EVERY window that tries to call the sip and requiring a soft reset to make the phone useable again. If I open it, type something in english, and then switch the input to chinese it runs like a charm until I restart again...what is that about?
Actually neither of these issues is a deal breaker, but it would be nice not to have to worry about it, is anyone else having these troubles?...any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
touchpal
i have touchpal also and cant keep it as default. Ive tried all the fixes there are on all the threads. Doesnt work for Touchpal. any suggestions or fixes would be greatly appreciated.
Well I figured out the answer to problem one on my own...TF3D takes a little time to load and interferes with SipChange so you need to adjust the delay so as to happen after TF3D is finished.
Just tap SIPChange, select the IM you want, and set the time to 45 seconds (shorter may work). Bingo, stays the default IM on restart
whats the difference (apart from it's tabulated) between touchpal and "compact QWERTY" mode keyboard?
you also need to Go make this change: HKCU\Software\HTC\BootLauncher\Apps and remove the folder called "Startkey"
I have the same problem with touchpal, where do i do this?
Just tap SIPChange, select the IM you want, and set the time to 45 seconds (shorter may work). Bingo, stays the default IM on restart
@FRUSTIN:
TOuchpal is third-party software by CooTek, "Compact Querty" is just a different layout for the tock HTC input method. TOuchpal is MUCH more feature rich and just kicks the [email protected] out of the default keyboard in every way, it supports tons of languages and multi-language input (go back and forth between two languages in the same sentence without changing any settings), web hotkeys, adds copy/cut/paste and D-pad to EVERY app, etc. check it out at www.cootek.com
@DIAMONDBS:
I did NOT do that and it works perfectly for me...why do you need to remove an entire folder from the registry? Can anone confirm this?
@WEETABIX1980:
Just go to start>programs>SIP Change, when the program opens you select Touchpal from the list of input methods and then change the numbers in the box below the list to 45, then click "Select"...should be the only button there...tapping "OK" is not good enough, be sure to tap "Select"
thanks, any clue what sip change in dutch is in the programs?
anyone knows this?
SIPChange is a little tool developed here at XDA:

Download the cab to your phone and install. This should then give you the options mentioned above.
Touchpal intermittantly hangs on me aswell. I post on here about it before. I tried allsorts to cure it (hard resets, clean installs etc). So annoying when demoing the phone to a friend and all of a sudden the keyboard hangs and wont popup.
I used to love Touchpal, now I hate it and will not install it on my phone.

Having problems selecting QWERTY keyboard.

Hi!
I received a Touch HD few days ago and from the first time I noticed that something doesn’t works properly.
Initially the keyboard by default was the QWERTY one. I changed it to probe the compact one. I did the change with no problems (obviously was not a difficult issue). Well not so obviously because the problem was when I tried to return to full QWERTY keyboard.
I selected the fullQWERTY in the configuration menu, I pushed the OK button but when I tried to write a new message the compact keyboard was still there. I tried to change to any other keyboard but the result was the same. I haven’t installed any keyboard so is not a software incompatibility issue.
I reset the phone, check for rom updates, etc but I cannot select QWERTY keyboard. I have search about this but the only information I found is a post in this forum with no answer.
Please, any information about a possible solution will be greatly appreciated. Just imagine a wonderful HD without its QWERTY keyboard…
Thank you very much.
I have the same issue. A full reset did fix it but then it randomly happened again. Obviously that's not ideal!
Any ideas anyone?
Might it be worth an email to htc?
You checked for ROM updates using? I'm sure there is some registry key but not really certain.
Regards,
Carty..
I have encounter the same issue. I have found out that if you go through setting and select keyboard to change..it will not work...
It seems that touchflo took over the registry.....
Now the correct way to change your keyboard is to
1. press your keypad up.
2. you should see this little arrow beside the your keypad icon
3. when you tap the arrow you will see this menu pop up to pick the keyboard layout.
This is the ONLY WAY to change the keypad
Hope this helps

I cannot get compact QWERTY to go away

I used the hack to disable Compact QWERTY but it keeps coming up even though it is not in the selector for SIP keyboards.
I've tried everything but I can't seem to figure this out.
Is there a way to completly remove Compact QWERTY instead of just disabling it?

On latest roms including duttys 2.3 compact qwerty no longer exists.
You've already said you use SIP change, so I'm not sure why it keeps coming up and once you select the keyboard you wanting using SIP change and reset phone, it should then be your default!
Try going to Start/Settings/Personal/Input and see which keyboard is selected
I am using the latest official ROM 1.19.831.0 when I look at the keybpard settings it has full QWERTY as the defaut and I can't even see the compact one.
Is there a way to delete compact all together? If not I may have to switch to a cooked ROM.
It is odd, I cannot pin down when I get compact rather than full.
I tried to re-enable compact reset then disable and reset again and the compact keyboard will still show up.

The only thing which comes to mind is possibly a reflash or hard reset
I've installed fingerkeyboard2 and use SIP change so fingerkeyboard is default. Works everytime
I deleted the reg keys and it seems to work, sometimes the other qwerty keyboard comes up but I hate to disable that one.
Ok my phone hates the full qwerty! I kept getting the standard keyboard instead of the full one even though in the settings full is the default. I disabled it in the registry and it still comes up, when it happend the full keyboard disappears.
I may have to hard reset and start over!
Has anyone else suffered from the Compact QWERTY keyboard that won't go away? I'm using standard ROM and for the life of me just recently it's stuck on Compact QWERTY. Every time I change to "Full QWERTY" and "ok", it just reverts to compact QWERTY, and it's starting to really, really annoy me.
Could someone suggest why this is happening and how I might fix it (happy to edit the registry settings if someone can tell me where to look?)
Thanks,
Petrov.

Have you tried going to settings > Personal > Input and selecting 'Full Qwerty'?
Alternatively try installing SIP change and selecting 'Full Qwerty'
OR again, another alternative is to use FingerKeyboard V2.1

Thansk for the tips Fallen. I had tried changing it through Settings, but that was what was not working unfortunately. I was about to try your SIP changes suggestion, but I found another solution.
I opened Total Commander, and at the bottom right of TC, there is a little keyboard symbol. When I hit that, it brought up the option to change the k/b to Full QWERTY (amongst other options). I changed it and, since then, it hasn't changed back to Compact QWERT - so my problem seems to have been resolved.
Many thanks,
Petrov.

Excellent, glad to hear it

Keyboard is not visible in my HTC Toudh Diamond2

I am justing trying with some of the keyboards on my HTC Touch Diamond2.
I have installed the following keyboards.
1. SBP Full keyboard,
2. Touchpal
3. HappyKeyboard
4. Swype
5. Resco.
I will uninstall and keep any one of it, after whichever is convenient for me. I am facing the following problem with respect to it.
1. My keyboard (not on swype,HTC default keyboard) is not poping up and it's not visible and even I can't open new SMS/mail window. Once I have done the soft reset only it's resolving.
What i noticed is whenever I am having such an issue, I am going to Settings >> Personal >> Input and check the "Input Method" and it's displaying as "Touch Input" instead of whatever I have selected previously. Even chaning the "Input Method" is not reflecting and need to do sofe reset.
For example: I have selected the SBP full keyboard and it's working fine and after some times, I am opening my phone and going to open the new SMS/new email message and it's not opening the keyboard and symbol is also showing SBP full keyboard and when I clicking the symbol the keyboard is not displaying at all and I need to soft reset.
And in this case Settings >> Personal >> Input >> "Input Method" is displying as "Touch Input" where it should be "SBP Full Keyboard". I don't hoe it's automatically chaning.
2. I don't know how to set the particular keyboard as default.
For example: I am selecting the SPB keyboard and after some times if I am doing soft reset, then the default keyboard is set.
Please help on to advice on this..any one is facing such issues.
Try remapping a button to open up the input panel, inconvenient, but it should work. Otherwise try a hard reset, and if that doesn't work: try a different ROM
