Best Apps for the X1 - XPERIA X1 General
I wanted to start a thread where X1 users could post there views of the best apps, freeware and commercial, for use on the X1.
Software is personal, there are no rights and wrongs, just taste.
Here is my top 3.
1) QuickMenu - Shows every program, every setting and even every user file on the Pocket PC right on the today screen. Fantastic little program, the HD screen of the X1 shows it off to fantastic effect. When T3D and all other launchers fail Qmenu is there on the start menu to save the day, ( great when mapped to the OK key and used with the default Silver X1 theme. ) Also good for the optical pad, you can navigate to any program, any location, any setting or file just by using your thumb )
View attachment QuickMenu_en_2.7.zip
2) mToday - Allows you to have 2 completely different configurable today screens with plugins, perfect for swithching between Touch Flow 3D and your regular today screen, without using up one of your valuble panel spaces.
View attachment mToday.cab
3) Pocket Plus 4 ( Avaliable from Spb site ) - This is a commercial entry, commonly used, but worthy of mention due to very high quality of the icons provided, photo quality, makes any today screen look and feel great.
Thats my top 3, bit old school, whats yours - please post and share your knowledge and experience with others on this great resource site.
Top 3 at the moment:
- Batti
- BeyondPod
- hTorch
Sktools
FDC Taskmanager
WKtask
does anyone use this:
http://julien.schapman.free.fr/touchxperience/advanced-configuration-tool.php
does it work with x1? if it does it's probably on top of many lists.
links to would be great
1) Freecaddie Great if you're a golfer and want a free GPS device for measuring your remaining yardage. (Saves a couple of hundred on getting a dedicated golf GPS)
2)Torch. i've used the LED as a torch soooo many times already
3) TomTom7 (Payware) What can I say...works great on the X1
3 X Faster micro SD card on the X1
I work for o2, I sell phones, the X1, the iphone etc, a customer told me he got an X1 put an 8gb card in his phone and its performance was slow compared to the 4gb card.
I found this program written by Tnyynt, a senior member of XDA developers that makes the micro SD card work 3 X faster, works for me.

Also these are the settings I use for fast snappy performance on my X1, makes The You Tube App on Touch flo 3D work like lightning, configured using Advanaced Configurations Tool

The X1, like all other phones, is only as good as the software it runs and reading the threads on this great site pays dividends.

Thx for ht mToday app.
Gotta ask, since I'm really not a big Magic App believer - what IS "tnyynt SD TuneUP.cab"? What does it actually do? How does one "Speed up your SD card 3 times"?
3 X faster micro SD card
For full explantion how this program works you should email or post the author, but what he said on his thread was the program makes some tweaks and adjustments in the registry. It hasn't harmed my device and programs installed from the SD card install faster, it was also said to improve the video performance of files played from the micro SD card, and the best thing about it is it is free !
SD Tune Up
I tried this out,
I installed http://s-k-tools.com/sktools/sktoolslite.zip (lite version is free) and ran a benchmark
scored 9481.48KB/sec read & 383.88KB/sec write
I installed tnyynt SD TuneUP.cab
soft reset and reran benchmark, initially it was slower, so I thought maybe I did not wait long enough after reboot for things to settle.
Re-ran a few times and it increased and settled at 16650.41KB/sec read & 477.65KB/sec write.
Quite a good improvement that will benefit things other than video playback
If anyone want to compare their results I have X1 UK generic f/w with a 16GB sandisk sdhc card (class 2 I think)

I have not installed this and I still have stock UK Vodafone ROM cluttered with lots of useless software - I just ran SKToolsLite Benchmark and got 16340.43 KB/s Read, 435.23 KB/s Write on my class 2 8Gb Micro SD. I guess it depends on your rig and what you've done to it as to how fast it is, but I wont be installing this fix as I already got your max. I'd encourage evryone interested to run this benchmark and post scores without the fix, so we can get a rough idea of the range of speeds.
i just did the bench and this is what i got with my class 4 8gb sandisk :
read 16605
write 800
curious, it's twice faster in write only? isn't it supposed to be twice faster in read also?
sd filesystem are poor. so, tyrning off some correction control or tweak an already non-reliable fs isn't a good idea imho

Should we start a new thread for card speeds? dont want to hijack this "Best apps...."
well this may suggest that there is no point buying class 4 cards for this fone to increase read speeds IN the fone
looking like ~16MB/sec is the ceiling read wise.
I think write speeds are faster than the benchmark in mass storage mode attached to the computer though for my class 2 16GB.
Thanks scoot for the benchmark program ( see earlier post ) to test micro SD card speeds, the best results I got with the standard 4gb card after installing the SD Tune up program( see ealier reply) , were 722 write and 16424 read. I also experimented with changing the file system filter cache, configured through Advanced Config Tools ( see ealier reply), the results were startling.
file system cache: 8mb
file system filter cache:disabled
Glyph cache: 64 kb
results:
722 write speed
16424 read speed
file system cache:auto
filesystem filter cache:disabled
Glyph cache:64 kb
results:
707.75 write speed
2062 read speed
Thats 8 X slower read speed with file system cache set to auto, the settings I posted earlier seem to be optimum.
Also you can access some free official Sony Ericsson promo java software, by texting the words " X1" to 83333, works for UK o2 phones, not sure about other networks.
What Windows mobile is crying out for is for Microsoft to do a route and branch de bottle necking of there operating system, to improve all round performance, until then we have the genius's of xda developers.
PS - Senior members of xda developers please be gentle with us noobies, please remember what your parents said, it's good to eat your greens.
Every now and again you may feel the need to hard reset your X1, to restore manufacturers settings and programs, ie take it back to the very first time you turned it on, I do it regular.
It is easily done simply by using the " Clear Storage " program in your settings folder, ( please think before you do this, as all user data, programs and settings not stored on the memory card are erased )
So before you do this you need to check that you have everything you value, program cabs, documents etc either stored on the memory card in My Documents, or safely on your PC.
Also make sure you delete all system generated files on your memory card, ie the windows folder, programs folder, anything and everything the system stores on the card. Often there are hidden files that can only be viewed and deleted by clicking the setting " view all files" in File Explorer.
Allot of these hidden system files relate to video, audio files and some memory settings.
I negelected to properly purge and clean my memory card before a hard reset, and my X1 rebooted from the Rom reinstalled stock software and defualt settings, but its performancee was significantly reduced and crashed allot for no apparent reason. Hidden system files on the memory card caused software conflicts.
You can easily test the well being of your X1 by Clicking on the icon called " screen " in your settings folder. Then align your screen. If the + moves around the screen smoothly and fast then your X1 is well, if it stutters and lags then you have conflicts and it is probably old hidden system files on your memory card which are the likely culprit.
Now my X1 can be re-born again, and again and is lightning fast and sharp once again.
Test 8GB Class6 from Transcend
I tested my 8GB Class6 Card manufactured by Transcend:
Test without changes: Read: 2125kB/sec Write: 218kB/sec
Test with tnyynt SD TuneUP installed:
startet at Read: 16284 Write: 185
settled at Read: 16384 kb/sec Write: 224kb/sec
Test with settings to ( with Schaps_AdvancedConfig_v2.0.2.0 from "Mark A Cilenti")
File System Cache: 8mb
File system filter cache: disabled
Glyph cache: 64 kb
Read: 15673 kb/sec Write: 188kb/sec
So you can see changing the Sytem Cache from 4mB to 8mB and changing the Glyph cache from 32kn to 64 kb doesn't increase (my) card speed, it decrease it.
Further I can't understand how the class 2 card from "scote" can be faster as my class 6 card. What's going wrong???

About card speed - I've seen various results when I ran the sktools benchmarks. I would recommend running it 3-4 times to get timings.

Installing apps to SHDMicro card instead of memory to speed up performance
Is there any performance benefit in installing your apps to card instead of main memory to speed up performance? The less data in the root system, the quicker the CPU can access everything? If so there used to be a brilliant cab installer I could dig up that let you pick a location for install everytime you clicked on a cab file in the device. Anyone know which of the following certainly does -not- work when installed on the card? 1. Changing default.xml to let the Google panel work with Opera instead of PIE. 2. Sktools 3. Pocket mechanic 4. Free regeditor (special arm version) 5. Touch FM Radiofm radio (with rds scrolling) 6. Google maps update 2.3 (google.com/gmm) To enable traffic and streetview 7. Xperia tweak (to change system wide browser to Opera & up the caches) 8. SD Tuneup to boost SD read speeds 8000% 9. That awesome HTC Touch IT screenkeyboard 10. The high definition youtube application.
Actually it's quicker if you install it on the memory as it requires less traffic between the card and the CPU. Only when the memory on the phone is nearly full will there be a real difference in delay.
also fragmentation and other things like it is not really an issue with flash compared to harddisks where filling it too much up can slow stuff down a good deal
MMS image compression
i've searched and searched but haven't been able to find anything regarding this matter. i remember with WinMO, i experienced this same issue...MMS messages compressing images WAYYYY too much for ones that were both sent and received. the quality was absolutely terrible (compression and resolution) and despite having a 300k cap, images would be sent or come in at an average of 35k. after making a registry tweak, images weren't compressed AS much (result would be 120k-150k after compression), resolution was upped to something like 1024x768, and the images looked quite good overall. what can be done so images look as good in our android builds? thanks rob
any ideas?
the running theory is that t-mobile doesn't know what phone we're using so it doesn't know what image size to set the incoming pictures to. it's a network problem. some of the builds that are based off of the nexus one are able to have good quality as long as t-mobile recognizes it. this is of course if you're running t-mobile. not sure if it's the same with other carriers.

[Q] Access SD media scan?
Hi all, I'm making a port of my homebrew for PSP named Musikr. but I'm having some problems while trying to scan the SD Card for songs (Don't know why, when using recursion, always get FC :S). So I thought that maybe I could access to the files Android auto-scans for when inserting an sd. But the thing is that, regardless all the info I've looked for, still don't know how to do that (even if that can be done). So, does anyone know how to do that? Thanks in advance
Android stores all the content it finds with the media scanner in the media content provider (basically a collection of sqlite databases/tables). http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/providers/content-providers.html For example the music is stored here: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/provider/MediaStore.Audio.Media.html You can read that database pretty easily to find all the content/media you need. You can also register a broadcast receiver for the MediaScanner complete event to notify you if the media scanner has just completed scanning the SD card. The intent names are: android.intent.action.MEDIA_SCANNER_STARTED android.intent.action.MEDIA_SCANNER_FINISHED android.intent.action.MEDIA_SCANNER_SCAN_FILE but you have to set the data attribute in the intent-filter in your manifest as well like so: <data android:scheme="file" />
[Q] MyTouch 3G (Saphire) 32B with Ginger Yoshi 1.2 Questions
I'm Running Ginger Yoshi 1.2 and I'm still seeing a lot of lag with the dialer/phone (Takes too long to load and most of the time doesn't load the custom ring tone for that contact), also the following games lag and they where not lagging on the stock ROM (1.6 from T-Mobile) Blow Up (Lite) Bubble Buster Smileys Regarding Performance Settings, I have the following questions: What would be the best setting for CompCahce? I've read that it's recommended for this type of phone, would 26% be OK? I have JIT Disabled since I've read it still very much unstable and might cause other things to fail, like the screen off/on animations, is this correct? I have Disabled Surface Dithering, Is it worth enabling it? I have enabled Allow Purging of assets, I've read that this really helps with the RAM limitation of this phone, is this correct? I don't have Home or Messaging locked, are they worth locking? Lastly, I have VM Heap size to 32M, is this the best for my Phone? I've searched and haven't found anything clear enough for me regarding these questions, if they are answered somewhere just give me the link to the post. Thank you all for your help and a Huge Thanks for Team Yoshi for there excellent ROM.
I flashed Ginger Yoshi 1.2 recently. I have a question for you. I am unable to get Wifi Tethering working with the same phone. Is it working for you?
I don't use Wifi Tethering Sorry I don't use it since I don't have a Data Plan...

Click to collapse ___________________________________________________________________ IMHO, Yoshi works for me, if it is set up correctly. Other than following the instructions in the "quasi-users guide" which really do help (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=938848), some of these settings have helped for me - I have both 32A and 32B but I use the MT3G 1.2 w/3.5mm jack: (presuming you have a 4GB SDmicro card [it's good, but higher is better if phone can handle it] and you can boot to a recovery that allows you to partition your SD card - Titanium Backup works if you want to save your apps, but if you want a fresh install, well, here it is): 1. Wipe, re-wipe and if you still are unsure... rewipe some more. Did I mention to wipe EVERYTHING (including battery stats, dalvik-cache, sd-ext... sorry for over-emphasizing this). Then use Ohsaka-Superwipe_v2 and reboot to recovery. 2. Partition SD card. I have a 4GB, so for me 512 MB a2sd space and something decent for secondary space is fine (the rest of my SD is 3.19 GB, so plenty of room). 3. Flash Ginger Yoshi 1.2.zip (works for 32A & 32B... I flashed the version with the 32A radio and IMHO I didn't like it), following whatever settings you choose (installed to partition, Zeam Launcher and 60 MB swap is what I did) then flash auto-boot-2.6.35.12-farmatito -32b-and-a.zip then reboot. Preset settings right out of boot for my device are the following (I have tried to change the settings and reboot to weird instabilities - app lag, call-to-image lag, no ringer/vibrate, fc issues, etc., but this works for me): CPU Governor: ONDEMAND Compcache: DISABLED JIT: Checked Surface Dithering: Checked Purging of Assets: Checked Lock home/messaging: Unchecked VM Heap: 48M On average, I have 33 MB free out of 199 MB and usually the JuiceDefender stuff works to give me a boost most of the time. The phone works pretty zippy for me and reduced the call-to-image lag some folks get when receiving/making a call. Of course results may vary for you, but again, IMHO, it works for me. Apologies if I am talking to u like if u r a noob or if I am editorializing too much. Force of habit I gotta drink the hell out of. Hope all this helps and take care.
I'll try it Just a few questions about your recommendations: 1.- I understand that I should wipe 2.- I have a Class 4 8GB SD Card, does the class 4 good enough or should I first get a class 6 or even a class 10? 3.- I will also try these settings Also, don't worry about talking to me like if I'm a noob, since I am a noob regarding custom ROM, Swap, Paritioning SD, CompCache, etc, etc...
For that type of device, IMO the Class IV is fine, but the Class VI or 10 offer better r/w protections for swap and functionality than a decent Class IV. If you have heavy usage, I would suggest getting something more than Class IV. Hope this helps and post if the settings have helped you out. Later
Where's my CompCache? I flashed auto-boot-2.6.35.12-farmatito -32b-and-a.zip and now CompCache is not showing up when I use the "Free" command: total used free shared buffers Mem: 112616 107964 4652 0 1492 Swap: 0 0 0 Total: 112616 107964 4652 Before flashing it, it showed numbers in the Swap now it's all 0, I've already tried disabling and re-enabling at didn't work... Edit: I did a restore of my nandroid backup before farmatito and here is what free shows: total used free shared buffers Mem: 112608 100276 12332 0 332 Swap: 29272 14044 15228 Total: 141880 114320 27560
It would appear as if you might not have set the "install 60MB swap on partition" when you did the initial install of GingerYoshi. On my device, it looks like this: total used free shared buffers Mem: 203944 198784 5160 0 148 Swap: 60668 37708 22960 Total: 264612 236492 28120 If that isn't the case (not installing the 60MB Swap file), it is a separate issue from the Comp Cache, I believe. Try installing GingerYoshi with the install to partition, ZEAM (or LauncherPro... whichever one you choose), and THEN say YES to the "60MB on partition". You should be fine by then, but if not, let me know. Thanks and hope it helps.
I hevn't started from scratch yet... I'm going to get a Class 6 first before creating ext3/4 on the SD Card... In any case I'm a little reluctant on using the 60MB swap since I read too may times that it could affect the life time of the SD Card and that it's not much of an improvement... But as soon as I get a class 6 I'll try and do a clean install with an Ext3/4 with the 60M swap and see how it works. Right now I have it like this: Installed with: No Ext, No Swap (because of no Ext) and Zeam Launcher In Performance I have: CPU = Ondemand 128-576MHz (altoght I'm using SetCPU for this) CompCache = 26% JIT = off (since it messes up the Screen On/Off Animations among other things) Surface Dithering = Off (I see no reason to have it on) Allow Purging of assets = On (I see no reason to not have this on) Lock Home and Messaging = Off (Again No reason to have this on) VM Heap Size = 32M (seems more stable than 48M) Edit: In any case, why does installing farmatito make me loose the CompCahche?

I forgot to give you the specs that I am running on my 32B device: SAPPHIRE PVT32B SHIP S-ON G HBOOT-1.33.0013d (SAPP30000) CPLD-10 RADIO-2.22.28.25 Oct 21 2009,22:33:27 (Settings below based on a 2GB SDmicro... a size I would not recommend): EXT, 60MB SWAP and ZEAM CPU = ONDEMAND with 245 - 528MHz CompCache = Disabled JIT = ON Surface Dithering = ON Allow Purging of assets = ON Lock Home and Messaging = Off VM Heap Size = 48M I ran the "free" command and I also see the 0 swap size. Hmmmmm... very interesting. I will do some research and look at the bug tracking to see if it is a GingerYoshi thing or if it is something in the way I am installing it on my device as well. As an added piece of advice, the farmatito zip is more beneficial for 32A devices like the 1.2 3.5mm jack device, so if I said to install to your device, you can generally disregard it and see if it gets you better results on the swap. As an FYI, in terms of screen transitioning, have you checked out the "Spare Parts" included with GingerYoshi? Some of the settings may be for aesthetics or performance in tandem with your space, but perhaps it can free up more memory for the ring-to-display lag you are having. As for apps (Angry Bords, for example), the only one that works with some acceptable lag is the RIO version... blasted ARM processors. Sorry for the confusion on my part and hope this helps.
I would love to have voice to text anyone know how I can add this to my phone or can yoshi add this to the rom? Thanks, Bukethead
Where's my CompCache??? Something changed and now when I run the Free command I get the following: total used free shared buffers Mem: 112608 106440 6168 0 2784 -/+ buffers: 103656 8952 Swap: 0 0 0 It has a different layout than before, but mainly under Swap I didn't have only 0: total used free shared buffers Mem: 112608 100276 12332 0 332 Swap: 29272 14044 15228 Total: 141880 114320 27560 Can anyone point me in the direction of how to troubleshoot what happened without having to wipe and flash the ROM again? Thanks. Edit: I had a backup of my ROM and did have the Swap numbers, So I did a backup of everything via Titanium and restored the Nadroid backup, then I restored apps, then the app data then the system data rebooting step by step and the swap still appeared, so I still have no Idea what broke the compcache but it's back now... If anyone has any idea on what could have changed, please let me know... total used free shared buffers Mem: 112608 105768 6840 0 32 Swap: 38280 19288 18992 Total: 150888 125056 25832
I am impressed with this rom I've been running yoshi for a few months now and I have no complaints. good job team yoshi!
[ROOT][MOD] Easily Disable Presidential Alerts
I've seen instructions on how to shut off Presidential Alerts (for U.S. folks) that involve removing your sd card and having to use a computer to change a file. Here's the faster and easier way. Why you'd want to do this? I don't care. But after I did it, my available RAM was up to 1.5/1.6 GB whereas it's typically at 1.2 GB after clearing everything. (No idea if/how this change could affect RAM like that, but that's what I'm seeing in the 20 minutes since doing this mod.) ///ANY PROBLEMS THAT RESULT FROM DOING THIS ARE YOUR OWN FAULT. I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BREAK YOUR PHONE OR MISS OUT ON WARNINGS OF THE APOCALYPSE./// 1. Put phone into Airplane Mode until you've completed ALL steps (if you don't, your changes to the file will be reversed upon reboot). 2. In Root Explorer, go to /data/data/com.android.mms/shared_prefs. 3. Open file com.android.mms_preferences.xml in text editor. 4. Find <boolean name="pref_key_cmas_presidential_alert" value="true" /> (it's near the bottom) and change "true" to "false". 5. Save changes and go back to com.android.mms/shared_prefs folder. 6. Delete the backup file com.android.mms_preferences.xml.bak (this was automatically created when you saved the change to the original file). 7. Reboot phone, open Emergency Alerts in messenger app (Messenger/Settings/Emergency Alerts), and verify that Presidential Alerts is no longer checked. You can now turn Airplane Mode off and go about your day.
Thanks. Glad to get a bit more ram. Been wondering how to disable that service. Thanks. I got 1.7gb ram from 1.2 or 1.3. As for why that happen is because thats a service that boots up with the phone. So as it was running it takes the sone resorces cause it did say on it that it is always active. Thanks for shareing this Verizon lgg3 vs985
