Buying Nexus from BestBuy, wtf?

Hi.
I am not in the US right now, so I've asked a friend of mine in Seattle area to buy a Nexus S for me.
He went to the big Best Buy at about 10am on the first sales day. He grabbed the phone, payed for it but he was not allowed to take it!!! They told him, they will ship it to him, around Dec 20-22.
WTF? Who had the same experience?
I'm in the exact same situation, I live in Canada and someone from the US is getting it for me. They said they'll get it on the 22nd at the latest when they bought it.
I live in Florida, had no problem going into a Bestbuy store today, purchasing the phone, and leaving with it.
It's charging as I type .........

It sounds like your friend picked it up with a contract.

nope, he paid 529 + tax
I should mention that the person that is getting it for me bought it online, which probably explains the 22nd date
what means 529+tax. tax not including in 529?
Walked into a Best Buy at 8am on release day and was given the phone promptly...
same thing happened when i went to my local best buy store. I then just picked one up at a Best Buy Mobile location, they had tons in stock.
I went to my BB. I bought the phone on a contract, and walked out with it. That's odd. (from the US)

I see you're from Switzerland.
US charges sales tax when buying merchandise locally except a few:
uncooked food
milk products (including yogurt and ice cream)
medicine
Maybe OP and his friend had a miscommunication? If not, I say try another Best Buy location.
They dont activate there
I chose to use my old sim and forgo the activation fee and I walked out the door. I really gotta recommend the case they have there at best buy, very slick. I don't have the package anymore but it comes with a separate holster you'll probably like and has the letter Pt in a square for the logo hidden on the phone backing piece.

i'm from greece anyway thanks for explaining i didn't knew it..how % is tax for electronics?
Non-mobile Best Buy stores supposedly only got 4 or 5 on launch date. Once those were gone, they offered to ship them. Also if you want it with a contract from a regular (not BB Mobile) store, they have to ship it since they don't do T-Mo activations in most non-mobile stores. In my BB store, all phones were gone by 8:10am (glad I got there at 7:50am)! Best Buy Mobile stores were supposed to get 35 or so for launch day.
it has to be miscommunication OP

I went to the Best Buy Mobile inside the Citrus Park Mall (by the food court)
in Tampa today and upgraded my phone (new 2yr contract) and walked out with it.
They are the only store in the area thats a T-Mobile dealer.
The rest of the Best Buys in the Tampa area have it shipped to you if you
want to upgrade and not buy it outright.
The guy told me he had 70 phones on the 16th and I bought number 51.
So he had 19 left if anyone wants to upgrade and not wait for it to ship.
About this one. Here in Florida ****ing bestbuy mobile store at sawgrass mall forces u to buy a frikin case that cost 35 bucks when u buy the phone off contract at full price. I was like wtf. And called manager and he was like I'm sorry it was not my decision it was the GM ...if u want u can wait for her. And I said no that's actually the reason she's nor here. Anyway I bought the case no choice ...anyway. I went to big store and returned the stupid case. I know cases protects ur phone but I'm not fan of them.

This is when you write to Google customer service. They wouldn't be pleased to hear that their exclusive partner in this release is treating customers in this way.
EDIT: OH JESUS I pulled a they're/their. Shoot me.

So that's where everyone went. Good, because I went to the one in Brandon off of I-75 and there was one other person there besides me when the store opened. I was surprised that Best Buy had at least 6 from what I saw. Citrus Mall was going to be my second pick if I couldn't get one.

I don't even think Best Buy Corporate would be pleased with that.

Stores in the US selling unlocked N4?

Does anyone know of any stores in the US that will be selling the Nexus 4 unlocked (ie exactly the same as the GPlay version)?
Best Buy, etc? I can't find any info out on their website

T-Mobile is promoting the same unlocked version of the phone, and I'm pretty sure they will sell it unlocked and off contract in stores also, but then again, I don't know what the price will be since you will be in a "T-Mobile store" and they can slap any price tag on an off contract "T-Mobile" phone that is promoted through their network.
It's been predicted around $ 500.00
You are better off in Google Play Store
negri electronics has it on pre-order, they don't know when they'll ship though
price is $100 more than play store. seems to be the only option for anyone outside usa/canada at the moment
Thanks for your help, folks I can order off play store as I'm in the UK, but I'm visiting the US next week and the play store US dollar prices work out less than the UK prices, so I was hoping I could nab a bargain in store

Why would you do that? You won't get warranty then.

Price is more of a seller than a warranty. The phone works out over £40 cheaper if I bought it at Play store prices in the US instead of the UK

I'm going out to Canada for a week at the end of the month, so I'm tempted to buy one over there too. I think there may be something that we can do in terms of sales tax too, but I don't know how this works and whether it's worth the hassle...
Anyone know how long it takes for something to be shipped and arrive from the Google Play Store? like 3-6 business days?

[Q] Availability from retail stores in mid december?

Hi,
I'm going from Denmark to New York in mid december, and really want to pick up a N4, since we can't order it from the google store here in Denmark.
Does anyone have a guess on how likely it would be for me to pick it up in a store in NY in mid december. I'm thinking stores like Best Buy and Staples (other stores I should look out for?).
I didn't follow the release of the Nexus 7, so I'm not sure how long it takes for these devices to be available from retail stores.
No one?
For the Nexus 7, it was available at retail stores right on the launch day of the Nexus 7 though I'm not sure if it'd be the same since this is a phone. Even if it didn't come right on the launch day, surely it'd be in by mid-December.
Thank you
I didn't realize that they would be selling the N4 in store? Was the original Gnex sold in stores?
I really don't think that they will be selling it in stores. I don't think they have sold any of the Nexus phones in stores other than the Verizon/Sprint variants which were not really Nexus. T-Mobile will sell it but for an inflated LG price.
Have you considered if you can order it online and send it to where you are staying or have a friend order it for you and you just pay him/her back when you are here?

I have thought about ordering it and getting it sent to my hotel. I have an American Express creditcard, so I'd assume that I should be able to use that on the Play Store, eventho the card is handled by some American Express company here in Denmark?
But I guess I'll wait and see. I'd prefer to buy it in a physical store if possible, but if my Amex card works as an American card, I'd certainly consider ordering it a few days before I leave, and then have it sent to the hotel.

It's posted in the general forum that the shipping address has to match your billing address. I don't know how that will work out for you, but if you are in no hurry I guess you can wait and see.

[Q] Some questions about buying online

My sister is looking to buy this phone as a Christmas present and we are not that big on online shopping but it looks like it is going to be the only way to get the cheap price after news on LGs MSRP.
Does anyone know what time and timezone to start trying to get it on the Play Store? Since it only has a notify me box and no way to preorder and I feel it will go out of stock fast. So she plans on sitting at the computer to get it bought as fast as possible.
Also what shipping and other fees can be expected when shipping it to Canada?
Google Play support has stated that the store is in the PST timezone (GMT-8), and it's assumed to go on sale at midnight. It's all speculation at this point though
Thanks, that helps a lot.

Nexus 7 3G Where to buy (UK)

Heading back to the UK tomorrow after some time away. Is the 3G Nexus 7 available in shops yet? If so, where?

Not yet am afraid, "3" Reckon they will have it in store 2nd week of December, but no exact date or price confirmation (Contract or PAYG locked or unlocked etc).. No other store even mentioning it, and with Play Store still out of stock they seem really thin on the ground.
A friend of mine asked about them in John Lewis and was told they would be stocking it, but they didn't know when. They said it would likely appear online first, but you can order online to collect in store (including some Waitrose). Since John Lewis give a 2-year warranty and have the best customer service around, that would be my first choice.
HMV should also be getting it according to a sales person.
Argos are worth keeping an eye on too, as they are selling the 32 GB Wi-Fi.
