Love X1 - XPERIA X1 General

Love the x1 coming from a long time Ericsson user very used to uiq but toyed with a Tytn 2 for a while so...
About vanilla unbranded X1;
1..Can you stop the emails being deleted once they are gone from a server that doesnt store email ie; when I download an email to the phone it stays until I download the same email to pc desktop and the next time I send and recieve on the phone the message is deleted from the phone. I want to keep some emails !, I tried moving them to a folder I setup within mail called store but it gets deleted from there!!!! huh.
Is there another, cleverer mail handler that I can use?
2.. Picture handling, not well implemented, on uiq you can browse to a folder quickly and view. With the windows mobile media picture viewer it takes all the pictures on the phone and gives you dates they are from not the folder name !!, (well it is microsoft afterall, bloatware and all that.)
Is there a smarter picture handler . ?
It is a great gadget, massive improvement over P1i for Sony Ericsson, I havnt stopped playing with it for 3 days now !, and if I can get Tomtom 6 to work properly, well..

Ok Ive sorted issue 1 kind of. To keep messages on your X1 you have to delete them !, that is they go into the deleted items folder on the mail account they are related to. If you try to store them anywhere else they will be deleted from the phone after they are downloaded or deleted from the pc, depending on the mail server settings.
They should stay in the deleted folder till you permanently delete them.
( microsoft problem again, I know its a customisable os but if it worked properly you wouldnt need to! )
I still use outlook express because Im used to it, I know lots of people use outlook but I only use that for my contact list sync-ing.
Any one else noticed wierd mail happenings ?.

Universal = PPC or Smartphone?

Hi,
When looking at 3rd party apps to run on my Universal you often have the option to use either a PPC version of the software or a Smartphone version - which one should I go for?
In my mind the the Universal is a bit of both so difficult to decide.
PocketPC, but remember that it runs Windows Mobile 5, not 2002/2003/2003se. Not all apps are WM5 compatible.
Thanks, I'm slowly getting to grips with it all
Now all I need to do is work out how to shift mail over to my SD card and I can stop playing and actually start using this thing
When you say "shift mail over" what exactly do you mean?
You can back up your emails to Outlook using ActiveSync, but that goes to the desktop. From there you can make them .EML files and move them back (I'd prefer to put them into text files for this.
Otherwise maybe you mean the attachments from emails?
Hi,
I want to monitor 3-4 email accounts on my Exchange server. One via standard pocket outlook and then three others via IMAP and ideally would like to store a couple of months of messages (including attachments) on each account so instead of storing the messages on the phones memory I am trying to find a way of moving them to be stored on the SD card.

Backup AND RESTORE SMS messages?

Hello,
I've searched the board several times since months and haven't found a solution to my problem yet.
My problem is as follows:
I have my Wizard (O2 Germany, so Xda mini S) since february (in fact it is the third one, O2 support changed it two times because the stylus didn't lock anymore after few weeks of use... have to change it again...).
And few months ago, I tried Sprite Backup, what I am using since then. Although it worked well, one thing is annoying: sometimes after hard reset and restore of only my mail database (cemail.vol, the only thing I really need to be backed up), the Messaging app doesn't show mail accounts anymore, but when I try to create new ones with the same names, it says, that the accounts already exist. So I created new accounts with different names, as many other users did, how I could read here. They co-exist and take memory.
Interesting thing: the Spb Diary messaging program can see the old accounts, and so it is also possible to delete the messages, that are still there in the old accounts. It can take a long time and many clicks (taps), because you can delete only one message at once, but it is better than nothing. One problem persists: Spb Diary can't delete the accounts themselves.
Therefore I am searching for a way to extract only my SMS messages (eMail is not important, I have it all on PC), start with an empty mail database (hard reset) and restore only the SMS messages into that new database.
The only program I have found so far, that really looked well for the first moment, is Jeyo Mobile Extender (or Companion). It backups the SMS Messages to PC, but not all of them. Messages in subfolders are ignored (I have subfolders for delivery notifications, call missed notifications and so on). And the restore doesn't work as expected. The date of the messages gets messed up, long messages (>160 charactes) get cut, and even the sender/receiver of the messages can get flipped.
But it must be possible to write a program, that fits my needs, I think (by the way: what is going on with the developers of WM2005? Backing up messages from mobile device to desktop is ESSENTIAL!!! Why isn't such a feature included?).
And because I am sure that I am not the only one with this problems hoping for a solution, I could imagine that someone already has written such a tool.
So, please, if anyone knows a tool or a different solution (editing mail database, removing everything except SMS messages...), PLEASE, help me!
Thank you very much in advance!
Yeaa im also really looking for a soultion to this, i Recently got a Windows Mobile device and i really wanna just be able to transfer my Series 60 Messages in Text format now.. to my Pocket PC's Messaging.
I can't believe nobody has made an app to backup and restore SMS's despite the growing number of people who need just sucha an app.
Except for Kai's, I don't think there is anything out there that does the job.
I hope SPB includes an option in the future to backup specific accounts only, because it is by far the best messaging backup app I have used till date.

jeyo has. works fine
jeyo is crappy piece of ****. better than nothing, but doesn't back up all messages, no self-created subfolders, no dupe-check, shows error message on ppc on every connect...
you will find out, when it is most important to you, believe me!

What's eating my Mobile Favorites during sync?!

I've got a new Sprint Mogul that I'm syncing with Windows Vista Home Premium. I have "Mobile Favorites" checked under Change Content Sync Settings. During synchronization, sometimes all or nearly all of my favorites from the Mogul disappear on both the desktop and the handheld.
This occurs often enough that I regularly copy a backup of the folder on both sides since I have to restore it a couple of times per day. It's pretty annoying, since I really do want to be able to edit, add, and maintain mobile favorites on my desktop.
The behavior is thus far unpredictable and inconsistent. Often I can go several syncs without it happening, then favorites suddenly vaporize. One consistent feature is that only favorites in folders disappear - the 2 that are in the root favorites folder never do. Often, the most recently-used, added, or edited on the Mogul will survive, while the rest disappear. Typically, favorites are safe until I use PIE then are liable to vanish, but sometimes I can use it without this happening.
Does anyone have any ideas what's going on and how I can stop it?
Same thing happening on my Touch
Found this thread through a Google search. Sorry to revive it but haven't found any explanation for this on the web.
My Mobile Favorites just wink out of existence right before my eyes ... really, I'm staring at my Touch, with ActiveSync cabled in and doing it's thing ... and ... blink ... blink ... blink ... every few seconds another one just disappears.
Very strange.
I'm having the same issue. Has anybody found an explanation or solution?
Favorites disappear - MS aware of bug
I read about this here: https://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsMobile/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3808030&SiteID=65
Sounds like a bug that has yet to be resolved.
Oh yeah, it is also an issue with XP SP3 and ActiveSync 4.5.
Here's my solution...
www.dashwire.com....
I let it do the syncing for me as far as Contacts, Texts, Speed Dials, Web Favorites, etc. The only things I really use ActiveSync for now are flashing and transferring large files to my SD card (music, ringers etc.)
Once you get an account on the site and D/L the mobile client to the device, run it and let it sync the first time to save everything (Contacts, texts, Speed Dials, Pictures, etc. If you have alot of pictures it may take a while or even freeze on you, so it might be a good idea to move the pics to your SD card before the the first sync.
After that go into your ActiveSync settings and set it to only sync files and media (unless you use Outlook at home, then set it for that too). Once done, any time you sync that way, it won't touch the Web Favorites and you don't have to worry about losing them. Another good thing is everytime you soft reset your device, Dashwire does a sync just to make sure nothing is lost. It will also put everything back if you flash a new ROM too. (Of course you have to re-install the mobile client and sign in first, but you don't have to worry about losing your Favorites in the process.)

A few Leo/HD2 questions

HI,
As some of you may have seen on a previous post I am giving some serious consideration of swapping from an iphone 3G to the HD2, and before I make my mind up I would like to ask a few more questions about the device, mainly the windows operation system as I've never had a windows phone before. I have been to numerous stores and none have the HD2 for me to trial so please accept my apologies for asking so many questions. It would be so much easier if I could get to try it for myself. Anyway here goes (sorry for the referals to the iphone):-
Can I drag and drop word, excel documents etc from my laptop to the phone and view and manipulate the documents on the phone?
I'm assuming you can arrange photos in individual folders, eg holidays, friends etc?
When you open a photo folder can you view the pictures as thumbnails (as on the iphone), or do you have to scroll through each picture to get to the one you want?
To use email (hotmail and googlemail for me) do you have to go via the internet, or is there an app as on the iphone, and does this sync with the accounts online ie if you delete on the phone will it have deleted when I view mail online?
Is it true that the internet on the HD2 does not support flash, and if so how will this affect my internet viewing?
Cheers

Yes, but it obviously needs to be a version of the document that can be read by the office applications on the phone (they are Microsoft office apps, but they're office 2007, not later.) It's easy enough to do "save as" on the PC and save as office 2007.

Yes, you can drag and drop and create folders and sub-folders, just like on your PC.

You can open folders in the file explorer, which is obviously just a list of files. You can also use the Microsoft Picture & Video app, or the HTC Albums app. Both have their pros and cons, but they're very similar apps. They both give thumbnail lists of your images.

You can add mutliple email accounts to the email tab in the Sense UI, which supports POP3 and IMAP email accounts, so you don't have to use an internet browser to read your emails. (You can also add a windows live account to the windows live app, which has its own benefits, such as messaging and push email.)
Your actions will affect your emails (such as deleting), but doesn't work too well the other way round. For instance, if I've got a notification of a new email and I delete it using my PC, it still shows as a new email on my phone. A little annoying, but hardly the end of the world.

Opera does not currently support flash, but IE does. It's not the most up-to-date version (as compared to a PC), but it's good enough for most flash viewing. If you're doing something like viewing youtube, you're better off with the youtube app, and if you want to view some flash intensive sites, you can try other browsers, such as skyfire.
I think that answers your questions, but let us know if you're not sure about anything.

Yes you can do this, the HD2 can support a lot of formats, excel, Word, PFD etc.

Windows Mobile is much like any computer OS, you can create folders and files much the same way. So yes you can organise your photos in any folders you like, or in the case of HTCs overlay of Windows Mobile, organise by Album.

This depends where and what program you use to open the folder. If you use the Sense UI overlay (HTCs default) then the folder will open with thumbnails. From there you can open photos and rotate and zoom by pinching the photos and dragging them around. If you use Windows default file explorer or Total Commander you will just see the images as files.

If you use gmail (as I do also) you can read your email from the main UI on the HD2 without having to run a seperate app (though unlike the iPhone you can run several apps at the same time). However if you prefer there is also a Java Gmail app that will also run on the HD2

The HD2 like many WinMo phones can of course support Flash. The default Opera browser version 9.7 on the HD2 won't support it. However later Beta versions now support it. You can also use the very excellent SkyFire browser (free) which will also play flash and of course youtube and more all within the browser.
Just to add, there is fix to add flash support for opera
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544770
also there is beta trial version for office 2010 so you can open up to 2010 versions of office files.
@jagnet Beat you to it
Thanks for the help guys, I'm pretty much sold I think. Another question I've thought of is relating to contacts and email.
As it's a windows device I'm assuming contacts will sync with outlook? Will the email addresses in my contacts automatically sync with the email app so when I use email all the email adresses I need are already there?
With regards to the office docs, I'm currently running office 2010 beta, but it saves the files as 97-2003 docs so I'm assuming this will be OK right?
Do you think they'll be a fix for the emails not deleting from the phone if you delete them on your PC any time soon? LIke you say, not the end of the world, but can imagine it might get a touch tiresome
Cheers

Yes, and yes.
You can use outlook to sync contacts, emails, texts etc., either via an exchange server (using your data connection), or via the cable when connected to your PC. I personally don't use this though, as I don't use outlook at home. Far too much like work lol
Saving docs as office 2007 docs will make them usable with the office software on the phone.

Honestly, I doubt it. This is the first time I've ever mentioned it myself, and I've never seen anyone else mention it on here. Besides, I very rarely use a PC for emails now. I've had emails in my pocket for about 4 or 5 years now, so I really only use a PC if I want to send large emails, or attach stuff that's on the PC.
I wouldn't hold my breath on a fix for that to be honest.
Just to add my thoughts on the HD2---
I've had mine since launch and the product is still buggy. HTC are throwing out updates (backdoor and official) on a regular basis. The main bugs for me which I'm not sure are cured yet are SMS getting stuck in the outbox and also the touch screen becomes active during a call which means the side of your face dials digits or hangs the calls.
Regarding email- I moved from Hotmail to Gmail because Hotmail does not support Activesync. I wanted to sync over the air my email, contacts and calendar. Hotmail only supports email and contacts. Gmail works great.
I'm hoping that come the end of January that all the main bugs will be ironed out. HOPING!!! or Praying!!!

A combination of the native windows live features and microsoft myphone would have resolved that issue, and given you the ability to sync a lot more too

For me emails delete from handset when deleted from PC (both exchange and hotmail) and vice-versa.
You can also set POP email accounts (i.e. gmail, hotmail) to sync at 'x' intervals (or constantly) so in affect it then turns it into push email service, which is nice - drains the battery though so i sync every couple of hours and then hit "Send/Recieve" if i want to manually update folders.

It may just be something I've noticed, and not a widespread issue. I don't really think many people would be bothered if they did notice it anyway!
I'm just a pedant and expect a lot
HD2 Notification Screen
Would someone please help me with this issue I have with the notification screen, I am not sure whether this was caused by installation of CM WiFi, but the notification screen is not showing any more when I touch the notification area, instead individual boxes pop out e.g. comm manager, any idea how to fix this.

Ask that question in a new thread. This is called "hijacking" and is considered rude

Is the touchscreen becoming active during calls a common fault?

At first i tried setting up my gmail account using google synch to be able to use active sync to do pushmail. It worked very badly imo, when it was set up to sync "as items arrive" the synchronization was very bad, the time between actually receiving an email and it showing up on the device was very long for example, sometimes i had to sync it manualy.
So it set up my gmail account using imap. The downside is you don't really have the pushmail feature and the minimum delay between the "send/receive"s is 5 minutes (although 5 minutes is "quasi-instantaneous" really). The upside is that it works better. And it syncs up the read/unread status, you can delete a message on either your PC or your phone and it will impact the other one, which is pretty cool.
However it get quite weird behaviours sometimes. For example if i close outlook mobile and the device goes to sleep, when I wake it back up I get the outlook inbox directly, i don't know why. Also I did some tests and although my "send/receive" frequency is set to 5 minutes sometimes it seems like i have to do it manually ...
Is anyone having the same kind of trouble (with gmail or other accounts) ? Maybe I should start a thread about those issues ?
I've just had a thought, Office mobile does come preinstalled on the hd2 right?
Yes it does

2 outstanding tweaks i cant get on my hd2 (contacts/email pics)

Hi,
i love my hd2 and have worked thought the camera and generic tweaks here. So glad to be away from my omnia and back with a htc and the knowledge here.
I have 2 remaining outstanding tweaks that i havent been able to find decent solutions to by searching here. The first is setting the emails to always show web pictures, i find it frustrating to have to select web pictures eachtime i view an email and as i am on an unlimited data tarriff i dont mind the data. How do i get this to work?
The second is sorting all my contacts by first name then second name. I am not sure if using googlemail as my exchange server, the HTC software or the microsoft sync is changing this but i am pretty tired of going through every day sorting my contacts correctly. Is there a setting somewhere once and for all to force contacts first name and then second name?
As an aside i never sync my phone via usb as i dont use outlook/windows and linux is happy enough pulling everything from googlemail.
Thanks;
Andy
I'll only answer for what I Know.
QUOTE: I am pretty tired of going through every day sorting my contacts correctly. Is there a setting somewhere once and for all to force contacts first name and then second name?
ANSWER: You will enjoy this tiny freeware software that does just that: almost instantly order your contacts by first name (or middle name or last name). Look here for Contact Changer. You run it once and 1 second after, all your contacts are sorted. The downside is that it doesn't change standard setting of the program, which means that the default order will still be LAST NAME first. But since the application is free and quick...
It sounds like your sync source is taking precedence over the phone. If you edit something on the phone and it gets replaced by the backup then that's wrong.
You need to check your server, not the phone.
I have the exact same problem. I don't use data connection (too expensive). There MUST be a way to sort contacts by there first name.... please
Helle
Hi HelleM,
If you go to the contact you want to change, select edit contact. scroll down to the bottom and select more and you can change it with the file as field.
If you can't download the program then you will have to do this with all of your contacts.
Or you could go to marketplace and download Contact Changer by Øystein Kalvø Stephansen. This app allows you to change the sorting in all the contacts. It's very cheap also.
I got it and it works fine. Don't get why HTC did not put that as a choise?

Aaahhh so many basic things that HTC should heve put as a choise...
So has anyone worked out how i can get outlook email to auto download the pictures for me in emails? It seems a pointless click each time i open an email!
d'oh wrong thread
yeah the email pics issue drives me nuts. it should be a choice in settings somewhere not ask every time. never seen a solution anywhere either. surprising for something that everybody seems to hate and its such a simple little thing, you wold think it'd of been fixed long ago right?
