Recommendations - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

Now I've been around xda-devs for a while, playing and upgrading my himalaya. But it's starting to get more serious now; anytime this week my own HTC Touch Dual will arrive, and I'm anxious to hear what ROMs/programs are true musts.
Note: I live in Holland, but I don't care about english ROMs, as long as my dutch networks work in them
Further more I hope to be able to develop a bit more now that I have a serious device coming up (C# I'm afraid )

Any Chance of an SPVx ROM Update?

I am the happy owner of a T-Mobile labeled XDA and now a QTek Tanager. I was wondering if anyone was working on a similar ROM load for the Tanager/SPVx and/or the SPV MS SmartPhones?
Thanks!
for all stuffs concerning SPV have a look at www.modaco.com, and our french site www.smartphony.org
There is not much evolution on smartphone OS since ROM 1.45
Oh, I'm already addicted to those sites (and use babelfish.altavista.com to translate smartphony for me- my years of French in high school has failed me miserably). I just haven't seen any movement on customized ROMS a la the XDA clones.
Optimize the GPRS stack- load apps into ROM (space permitting)- stabilize the phone... you get the idea. If I were enterprising enough, I might even try the tools on this site to hack away, but alas my coding skills are far out of date.
We've seen that all Windows CE-like ROMs are very similar in structure to the XDAs ROM. However, we presently have little time to extend our work to other devices: we're already spendng quite a bit too much time on this hobby as it is.
Is the SPV still buggy as hell, or have they improved it?
Well buggy as hell isnt the right description for the problems in the SPV!!!
The best thing is that each day you discover something new "New Bug" and that is the best thing in the SPV each day you have a surprise so you can benefit from it all day long. Lockups are fun for exemple.... they keep you busy, battery is excellent for 24h i mean why should we talk allot mobile phone are made for their looks only not to be used!
And ifffffffffff by mistake you have removed the SD card dont think you can use it again till you turn off - on the device nice ehhhh?
What more i think this is the short list, hope your happy if you need more info i am glad to have a full detailed report for you about maybe 100 pages?
I was hopping for a ROM update from SMART for my SPV and the good news is that they got one 2 days ago... the updates "NO BUG FIXES" yeah i know isnt it great....... oops one more thing i am just waiting for my QTEK to come back from the dealer for some modifications and then i am throwing my SPV out of the balcony
hehehe ARZLEb got a tooth against the SPV
Well i ve been using it for its early beginning when working on the project with Orange france last year, that is right The OS is very buggy but i works even.
The Radio stack was part of the first major upgrade 4 month ago and it has been improved a lot.
The main problem is that SPV is underclocked voluntary from 133 to 84 mghz and only have 16 M Rom aviable.
And people using it deserve to have a PDA like, i m sorry guys but this is more a phone than a PDA
so the more software and skins and stuff the put into it the slower and buggy it runs
The teenage (SPV E100) is nothing more than a SPV in a new plastic package. same hardware except for the screen that has been improved (personnaly i found the rigianl one quite good 65 K on a phone that s great).
People are working on hacks, you might have heard of us at the early beginning of the year for our crack of the orange signature that allowed users to put unsigned softwares on the SPV, and make this phone maket share growth in France.
Such kind of phone without software isn t worth buying it.
We all are waiting for the new rom based like ppc2003 on the .net framework
it is a bit harder to hack the SPV ROM because it is mainly based on the PPC framework, but we have nearly no documentations about the specificities and modifications applied to SPV.
Argh. 'tis disappointing!
I believe that a ROM update similar to the XDA's would do wonders for the platform! Stabilize it, add more features, and maybe make its radio a little more sensitive. I understand the overall reluctance due to minimal documentation and fewer devices sold (and the Gods of the XDA ROM are busy updating the image for those awesome PPCPEs!).
Grrrr. What a platform this little Tanager could be...
In fact I'm using dumprom to study our beloved SPV ... with the separate XIP images (oem, sfon, lang, oper) - if dumprom works, makerom should probably work too, and be less dangerous than a full flash as we have (theorically) no possiblity to fry the bootloader ... just need more people with free time to try it 8)
If I can get assistance with step-by-steps on how to save my current ROM, then sign me up!

Shift delayed until Febuary.

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/01/12/htc-keeps-letting-the-shift-shift/
Well the shift looks like has been delayed again now till Febuary. The reason why? Looks like HTC now cant decide if the shift should be shipping with the phone or not is one of the reasons. looks like they do read these forums and are really considering have it ship stock with voice capabilities out of the box.
How do I know this? well my new source just told me this. who is it? well our very own boygenius has emailed me that they are currently still deciding on this issue and its contributing to why the shift has been delayed.
The latest rom i have did still have phone settings in it so looks like they are swaying still towards it shipping with phone.
Now this kinda proves what i kept on saying that it had the phone abilities. what i was never sure of is if it will ship. we now know they are deciding on it.
That's nice to know... actually I just pre-ordered one.
but at least I'm happy cuz now every body can belive pawel was right!
I think still have to use the athena project's os for use full wm6.
I donated athena project...... mm.... actually not that much amount..
but I really want to say thank to athena project guys...
ok good news (even if delay are not so fun), I hope they understand why it is so important to have phone capabilities .. they put a SMS section on their shift support webpage ... if they remove this ability I think it will be a real problem because we all know about this ability and we'll never accept losing it. I own an HTC Touch but will be really happy to have a shift with phone + my Touch .. both are for different use (one as an calendar and real phone) and the shift allow me not to bring my touch all the time. I can choose which one I took .. I can't bring the shift to a party, to some holidays .. because there are too many risks of losing it, being stolen, etc.. so I would really enjoy both.
But what about the Origami 2.0 package? The shift had this package at CES2008... and it would be the PERFECT "official" reason for a delay. I think that with this package the shift will be THE BEST UMPC for more than a year.
Thanks for the news, I hope we will have more news in the coming days and weeks
ANOTHER delay?
Why don,t they just get the device out there with everything enabled and let the user choose how they wanna use it!?.
Who are they? Microsoft??
C'mon guys at HTC! just release it! We'll hack your ROMs anyway......

It's not only about choice .. the delay comes from many reasons ... yes there are some choices to be made.. but there are issue about the number of shift to produce.. I have heard about CPU for the WM6 part that were not enough produced by Qualcomm and that was the big reason for the delay .. so we'll see
Hi, me tells a german distributor, that HTC has a "special Chinese Year" (like the chinese Year of the dragon, religion) within that, the people works not so a lot and be more relaxed, so that all things that come from there have delivery problems..
maybe i dont now it´s true, but that tell me a distri ;-)
i´m very angry about HTC politics, first they tell some specifications and later the dont have this specifications. (HTC Touch DUAL and S730 without GPS) I tell my users one half year ago, wait please for the new modells with GPS, and then, they change her product spezifications 1 months before to "without gps"..
i´m very angry, i´m sell and support many years with htc devices, i deployed and report many problems with the devices to htc or to the distris, sells more than 3000 devices since start with Wallaby/MDA ..
maybe it´s time to change again.
but we will see, i test the shift - is it right than we stay - is not i search again - i found always a other solution

Oh.. Well.. If that is the case I guess I should be a bit more understanding... I guess.
But it still sucks...
The Qualcomm patent problem stuff sucks too.
Sorry for the bad language, but that is how I feel.
It just does....

Software Bugs/Orange

Guys
Im a newbie so read this with a forgiving hat on. I have done a search too before anyone says it
My htc touch HD appears not to be perfect. It works, but after calls it can take up to 10 secs to update the screen which is truly annoying. However, my biggest bugbear is the fact that iPlayer from BBC works for 5 mins and cuts out. This is a constant.
I spoke with HTC and they said they have come across this bug however, it's only with Orange network phones that they cannot upgrade due to a Ms licence agreement with Orange. Orange have my query and are considering it (helpdesks eh!)and neither have they realised their version of the htc ROM update from early april either.
Anyone seen or experienced this and sorted it ? Thanks . The 'Lhad.
I didn't quite realise that Iplayer stopping was a bug. Its hugely frustrating watching iplayer and it happening. I put it down to dodgy wi-fi connection, so just stopped using my phone to watch stuff on.
I do have an issue with my phone in that I seem to miss loads of calls, I just get a text a few minutes later saying somebody rang but left no message even when I'm in signal. But I'm sure thats down to Orange rather than a bug in my Touch HD.
Flash with Dutty's ROM. It seems to resolve most of the problems with the Orange version
I have to admit... flashing new ROMs is the way forward. I spent three months tweaking my HD daily to try and make it less buggy and more functional overall (literally hundreds of tweaks, and just about every app under the sun). I finally decided to bite the bullet and flashed Dutty's v3 XT ROM when it reached version 3.0 (final stable release - except for the version 3.1 that came out today)... and... it really does make a huge difference in overall functionality. I am soooooo much happier with my device now.
At some point I will post the ridiculous list of tweaks and apps I tried, just for other peoples reference, but... ROM flashing is the way forward. Honest.
(Caveat: - Flashing will invalidate your warranty - but definitely worth it for a fluid functional device that doesn't crash at any and every opportunity).
Also... there's a lower resolution iPlayer APP on here called myPlayer... which is truly brilliant if you're not fussed about the loss of picture quality, but prefer an achievable data stream! Not very pretty, but very functional if you're on the move.
many thanks to sbarts and especially flid. I've downloaded dutty's XT Rom but really worried about doing the install. Is there a level of software that wont work etc?
Dont really know the questions to ask... just dont want to break the phone when it's only 3 month old! Again, thanks in advance for any advice.

Htc hd2 , should i go for it ?

Ok so I really like the htc hd2 and I need a new phone .
So my choice was the HD2 .
But now , I've read soooo manny problems about it , and it's not the problem , that's keeping from buying it .
But my dad is going to pay for it , and if after a couple of days or weeks something comes up with it , my dad will be maaad at me .
And I don't know what to do :S
And I suck at decision-making
Please help
My view: Every piece of technology will have some flaws, but HTC does seem pretty responsive to its customer base. I'd say, go for it. This is the best resource on the net to find solutions to whatever issues you might encounter with your HD2.
My HD2 is working just great. I strongly recommend it - this is the best phone on the market!
The downside to any forum like this is that the posts you get are usually concentrated negativity.
After all, if your device is working perfectly, what reason do you have to post asking for solutions and/or advice?
Personally, myself and my girlfriend both bought matching T9193 HD2s, flashed the same ROM, and neither of us have had problems...we both love them.
Layman's POV
Try and find someone who has one and ask for a go on it, or see if it's in the store. See if you like the ease of use, and of course the aesthetics. The intenet facility on it is outstanding.
Some people don't like the battery life, but it's no hardship to charge it at night or at work through your pc.
SMS has a few issues, but for me that was ironed out a couple of weeks ago through a hotfix (I hope).
The radio could have been clearer, but the latest fix appears to have sorted that out, and it wasn't a big deal anyway, just not absolutely perfect.
In 8 weeks, the screens crashed about the same amount of times, no hardship to restart the device.
I'm sure there's loads more (technically), but nothing really hinders the phone, just makes it not perfect.
But even the Persian rugs were made with deliberate flaws, as not to try and compete with Allah...
I've found that most problems can either be resolved or worked around from the online quran that is this forum
i suggest the hd2. right now i own the nexus one and i would do anything to trade up for a hd2 anyday. soo go for it!
the htc hd2 is a quality phone as long as you install a few bits and bobs and do some tweaks , you have so many choices of lil tweaks to get the phone how u want it, i had a 2g iphone and i really wasnt that impressed with it , what iphone has htc is the app store but 90 per cent of the apps are stupid like drinking the pint of beer lol pointless and fun for 5 mins , htc is the way to go
For Web browsing, movies and reading get the HD2
For communications and social networking get a Blackberry Bold with BIS or an E72.
To be able to do the most varied and functional stuff get an iphone.
My advice is that if you're sure you want an HD2 you should buy it and you'll love it; but if you're not sure, you should buy something else. It's a great phone for a certain type of user. If you're the sort of person who enjoys spending weeks tracking down tweaks and customisations and fine-tuning things, you'll like it. If you just want a phone that works properly, you'll hate it.
Go for it and be sure to install the 1.66 ROM for your country. After you are used to that you can play around with flashing. You won't be disappointed!
If you want something that works perfectly out of the box (with the limitations it has) you should buy an iPhone. If you don't mind spending the time on finding and installing cab's and tweaking the registry, then you should get the HD2.
The iPhone has limited customization options unless you jailbreak it, but in the 2 years of owning them I never had to reset/turn it on/off even once. The HD2 has almost unlimited customization option and this forum is the perfect place to find solutions for most of the issues you will encounter. My HD2 I have to soft reset/turn on/off on a regular basis. Being fair, the new 1.66 ROM seems to have improved stability and SMS is also working for me now.
Best regards,
Jacob
Thank you guys !
I went for it !
It's awesome , didn't have any problems except for that pink spot issue
Really nice device !

HD2 decisions ..... decisions ......

hi, first post here....
I've recently bought an HD2 sim free from a mate who had it as an unwanted upgrade from t-mobile... To cut a long story short it started not botting up so it went to the menders.
Now my question, if the menders come back saying its not worth mending is it worth getting another HD2 on contract ? or would I be in for the same trouble with crashes possibilty of not always working ?
the contract would either be O2, 3 or orange
cheers
chris
Flip a coin.........thats how I make important decisions..........
Seriously though, I would suggest getting one but then Im incredibly biased because I love mine, its never given me any problems......(except ones Ive caused myself from too much tweaking)
However....... a number of people do seem dissatisfied with the HD2 for numerous reasons.... a short while reading through xda will help you make the decision.....
Some say wm 6.5 is a dying os..... I think thats a matter of opinion.....
I think this device has a lot of life left in it and will easily keep me happy until my next upgrade in just under a year, by then I think it might be time to jump ship to android...
Its basically just a case of deciding what you want and whether the HD2 can deliver that...... your in the right place though.....
Happy reading.......
I can't fault the HD2, I loved the screen, browsing web pages and pdf's are soooo easy.
Myself I don't have a prob with wm6.5 aslong as that isn't the source of the crashes etc but I really do like SENSE so would like to keep that, either on wm or android.
I've never found it to big like alot of other people i've spoken too who've since gone to apple.
Do you know if it was a few batches that had freezing issues, certain operators or just how people used them. I just spose it was too experimental for htc on a wm o/s...
another app that i have found very useful at work is the wifi router (which o2 won't let you do if you have an iphone)
chris
I think there must be bad batches of hd2's however I dont think that's cause for concern, if you get a new one it will be under warranty anyway.....
the choice of custom roms and sense mods available mean you'll never get tired of tweaking the thing.....
If you liked the one you had before then Id definitely recommend another........
also android is coming on leaps and bounds for the hd 2 so you've got the best of both worlds (if you like that sort of thing)
