In Windows I have Norton Ghost and Macrium Reflect to make a complete dump of my system to a single file.
How do I achieve the same for my Smartphone?
Really want to try other ROM's but need to backup my current.
Got it. Used "SPB Backup".

Hello All,
Firstly, I would like to say how great this website is and tip my hat off to all the people involved in maintaining this site.
I am very new to the whole XDA modification scene and have a ton of newbie questions. I know some of these questions have been asked before; however I still have not grasped the concepts fully. I have tried to restate the questions asked before so that I (and hopefully other newbie’s ) can fully understand how to modify XDA’s.
Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.
So here goes the questions:
When creating a customized ROM (using mkrom) my understanding is that one has re-create the initobj.txt and the Default.reg. Is it possible just to install all the applications you want, and then download the initobj.txt and the Default.reg and place them in the cfg directory for the custom ROM?
If this does not work, how does one know what to edit in these files?
When mkrom request a Rom image, is it requesting the backup ROM IMAGE? Will any image do?
When backing up a ROM, what option does one have to select to backup the operating system, settings and programs inside the ROM? Does CE do all of this?
What is CE, Boot, GSM stand for in the boot menu?
If one wants to just create a new boot image, what is the simplest way? Does one have to create a whole new ROM?
If one wants to just have the unlocking software, what is the simplest way? Does one have to create a whole new ROM?
When creating a Rom using RomKitchen, it asks you add Add your own ROM files? Is this your backup rom?
In RomKitchen one of the readme files asks for:
bootimage.bmp,_initobj.txt,_initdb.ini,_default.reg,xipchain
Is the default.reg and the initobj.txt in this directory have to be pre altered for the new programs one wants in the Rom like the way the mkrom wants them? Does the setup program create them for you?
Is the bootloader.nb0 file specific to the boot loader you have?
Very confused what is exactly needed in the /CFG directory.
In the CFG directory do you place your backup Rom dump?
Some ideas.
The most important issue is to know that you have to put the files you want to add int the folder files2 (up to 5 MB minus the amount in the folder directory) or in files1 (up to 900 KB).
The key is to manage default.reg (the registry of windows CE), you have to register the .exe's and dll's you want to use. It can be very useful for you the ssnap.exe (to show registry modifications by autoinstallabe programs) and a registry editor.
In initobj.txt, there are only links, but you should put links if you want to access to your programs in Start Menu-> Programs or in the Start Menu.
I suggest you to make different posts for each question, it would make easier to answer.
Regards.
Hi,
sorry if it is not the right place for this but do you know any application that is able to backup the SMS messages from our Windows Mobile 5 (or 6) to a file (like a CSV, HTML etc...)
Thank you
You should habe a look at PIM Backup Link. AFAIK it has the chance to backup to a text file.
Thank you for your answer.
Unfortunately, PIMBackup doesnt provide me a way to read my SMS easily when I am not connected to my WM5.
It is a PIB file (zip file) with a CSL file that is not easily readable
If you know other application, please let me know
I just read this from his homepage:
"There are two kinds of backups. The binary based backup has been implemented in order to have a backup/restore process which is fast and more reliable, the disadvantage being that the backup contents cannot be easily modified or viewed.
The text based backup has been implemented in order to see/edit the contents on a pc for instance."
I think you should just select the text based backup and you have want you want. I just installed it at my girlfriends device, but never played with the options.
I know it is as simple, as copy the "opera9" file from the windows/opera folder, but I always forget to do it. I have also tried to destroy wm (not my intention. Used a bad driver), so I had to HR, without being able to do a backup.
Whenever I change my rom, I always forget to backup the file anyway...
So my request is this.
A really simple program.
Bacis interface shoud have a button that, when pressed, copyed the file to "internal storage/backup" or whatever you want. And ofcause a restore button.
As a bonus feature, it shoud be able to start by it self at every startup, and make a copy of the file, so the backup always would be up to date.
Does this sound stupid?
I hope a friendly developer want to help, as I only can do php, and not this. :-/
Greetings.
Benjamin
PIMbackup can do that.
Hi folks!
I'll make this short and sweet, because it's probably something that's so basic to you all it's hardly worth the effort
I am trying to write some software to basically create a backup of the registry and file system on a WM6 device (that was the easy part) and then being able to restore those settings and files in the event of a hard reset (this in itself will not be too hard).
My problem is that I don't know how to "get" to the place where I can execute the restore process (essentially before the operating system starts but so I can still access the registry and file system). I had considered simply using the startup folder on the Flask Disk but I'm not sure that I will be able to access all the files that I need to when the OS is fully up and running (sharing violations or read-only access or whatever).
Can anyone give me any pointers? I'm not fussy about what languauge I have to use. Just a nudge in the right direction would be helpful (and yeah, I know there's third party stuff out there for this).
Thanks!
Sorry for new thread, tried searching for things like a Beginner's Guide but no luck...
The HD2 is my first foray into WM phones and I just need a bit of help understanding how to install all the programs and tweaks you clever folks on here cook up. For starters I want to disable the clock flip animation when you switch to the Home screen:
1. You can disable this extra animation so it only flips when it needs to flips. Download the modified manila file at the end of this post.
Done
2. Disable HTC Sense in Today settings.
Done
3. Backup original Windows file (you are going to overwrite) to your SD card.
OK, this is where I fall down
4. Extract downloaded file to Windows directory on your device (overwriting the original).
Not sure here either, but I think this will be obvious once I connect to my PC...?
5. Enable HTC Sense again in today settings.
I'll be OK here
Also, in the Hints & Tips thread, it talks about installing a program to edit the registry for a lot of the tweaks. Would something like Total Commander (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm) be OK for that?
search for cab file, on leo themes and app, 1sr row, the one with touch x . copy it to your phone/storage card , launch it and softreset. no need for backup
Download the cab-file called "Touch_X_Homescreen_Flip_clock_OFF.cab" from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584415
Notice that this is a cab-file and not a rar/zip(/whatever)-file.
Cab-files are so to say "setup-files" for windows mobile.
That said, after you've downloaded the file to your computer, simply copy/move it to your mobile. Now from your mobile, run this file, and it will install as a program.
This means that you can uninstall it by going to settings->programs....
My first tip would be too make sure you install/store everything on the storage card and not the device. this is one mistake I made and you'll run out of space quickly.
Secondly, decide now if you're going to install the lastest ROM. best to do it now before you get into setting up and tweaking otherwise you'll be in my situation again where you'll have to clear everything and start from scratch.
And yes, it's easiest to download CABs to your PC, transfer them over USB to the storage card, then install from there.
