Whatever software you put in your phone, A-GPS will only work if your operator supports it in their network. As far as I know as of today no operator in Europe has commercially deployed A-GPS.

That´s not true and the question is right. I am also looking for a software solution. The application on the 3300 just needed a Internet connection and get´s the information about the satellites from there. so you get a much faster GPS fix. we were all using it on the 3300 - in germany, austria and italy. Would be great having it also for the trinity

Can you explain how A-GPS can work if you can't access your operator's core network elements such as the SMLC (Serving Mobile Location Centre)?
Read this article and specifically the caption for picture 2:

Sorry for the unrelated question but does anyone know any GPS software that has a Today Screen plugin for neatly displaying location info/stats on the Today Screen?
I didnt think the tytn had gps..!
am I right or wrong ?

CHECK HERE FOR THE PROCESS
yeah i have seen this thread just seems theres alot of
problems getting it working, just wonderd why htc are saying tytn has gps
and can be used with tomtom but no one can get it working
I don't think HTC is saying it's built-in, just that it's available, supposedly as an add-on.
"quote from HTC site"
Support: HTC TyTN
Q: Does the integrated GPS turn off?
A: From everything seen so far, the GPS is only on when you activate the GPS software. You can conserve battery power by turning off the GSM radio when its not needed
it states "integrated GPS"
maybe I have made a mix up but this is stating its intergrated on the tytn
Could they possibly be refering to GPS the way cell phone GPS is defined? i.e. Ability to broadcast your triangulated position (via cell site, not satellite) for things like 911?
Dan.
That first link didn't load for me initially (some cookie not set I assume) so I didn't see it. The page certainly implies that the TyTN has integrated GPS, but it makes no sense for them to say "from everything seen so far" - if they made the product, shouldn't they know how it works?! This is very strange.
CmptrDan: I don't think it's an E911 related thing, because that cannot be used with regular GPS software AFAIK. If it's just the regular E911 TDOA technology, I don't think the handset even receives the location information; it is calculated by the cell towers and sent to the 911 operators. I must point out that I do not know any of this for certain.

They suggest turning the GSM radio off to conserve power when using GPS so they can't be referring to triangulation and stuff like that because without the GSM radio on, it wouldn't work.
Everything about that answer is weird.
I think they mean that if you're worried about GPS wasting power, you should turn the GSM radio off, which should (theoretically) kill the GPS too. That part actually makes sense...
Maybe they're just toying with us
Maybe someone over at HTC has noticed the efforts being made by some here at XDA-Dev.
So they just bung in some obscure reference to GPS just to mess with our heads
Somebody should call HTC Europe and ask about that. And I mean call, not email, because then they have to give SOME kind of answer.
there are now even more things about the gps, more answers perhaps

could it be like this: they are going to release a new rom and in that one GPS is enabled?????

The links that you have written they report to gps external to the tytn.
i hope there are standards FAQ
It's logic that if you haven't GPS, or phone, or wifi, you don't ask nothing about.
Try to compare the ask possibilities of more devices...

Sorry for being the party pooper here but these articles seem to be generic and not specific to any particular phone model. You can see the same articles if you select Qtek S200. I don't take this as a sign from HTC that the Prophet contains a GPS receiver.

True, but the work in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1121407&postcount=387 shows that there is an NMEA compliant device trying to come out in the Hermes . The parent thread for that also has the exact same GSM and GPS chipsets listed as being in the Tytn and the Trinity.
Seems like they're really getting close to having it working, so keep your fingers crossed!
called htc europe today they said the 3600 has enabled gps the 3300 has gps but disabled until the next rom update but the tytn has no gps.
I mentioned the htc website in the faq's on the tytn, they said there maybe a mistake and will take a look and rectify any mistakes if any.
(I might have got them two model numbers the wrong way around but one definitely has gps disabled)

Well, the Tytn uses the exact same chipset as the Trinity, and this chipset has a built-in GPS (which the Trinity does use successfully as evidenced in this forum). I'm sure HTC doesn't want the general public to know that it's disabled this feature, but I've seen the chip info on Qualcomm's website and it does in fact have it. I didn't see any mention of GPS in the FCC submission for the Hermes, so they never had any intention of letting us use it (here in the states at least).
I really have to wonder why HTC would want to disable it other than to try and widen its product base a bit since the Trinity would have less public interest if the only difference between it and Hermes was the keyboard.
I really hope so would be great to get this feature working, at the moment im using a bluetooth gps reciver but not always got it with me.
if htc says there is no gps, then there shouldn't be any gps in tytn.
don't get too atracted
hi everyone ! can anyone tell me how i can use Google Maps with Gps technology ?? when i select "Use GPS" it says "Network Unavailable"
You're connected to the Internet?
An activated GPRS, EDGE or UMTS is necessary.

you mean if i want to browse maps with gps, i have to connect to the internet ??
Oh yes the maps are not on your device they are downloaded!!
Google Maps gets your location from the GPS sensor, but then has to go online to download the actual map data for that area.
so if the map of the area we are in, was downloaded befor then i think there wont be any problem ! i think it would be just like the quick gps software in diamond ! am i right ?
I think that should be a way of download the map and use it offline. Some cracker should make it easy

hehe, i tried 5 different apps and currently use gpsVP /w cached Gmaps imgs
pretty good for a free app, altho not totally easy to set up as there is no info...
since there is no maps for japan that i know of, never tried a commercial product, then again i prefer gmaps and my brain for navigation

in the last few versions of gmaps just install it onto the storage card and then you can just save whats in the applicationdata\googlemaps folder and use that offline

Can also be Wifi.
hey everybody, first post here....
i read that i should not start new posts if theres one going already.
I got my diamond about a month ago, its an alltel cdma diamond with original ROM, no registry tweaks, pretty much stock.
the GPS is being finicky. ive tried atleast 10-15 different GPS applications (all freeware or trials) and they are alway hit or miss. sometimes i get a 6-12 sat lock in seconds, even indoors... but sometimes i cant lock on outside even after 15min or more (even if i had a lock on less then 8hrs earlier). Ive been trying to find a pattern to why it sometimes works (certain settings, maybe after a resets, quick gps, etc)
side note, i used the G-Watch app while in poland where i have no phone coverage. it worked perfectly everytime i turned it on with almost instant lockon. but back in florida every program i try sometimes works and sometimes doesnt, even if i turned the phone to airplane mode.
question 1- is this considered normal for the alltel diamond
question 2- does the software that costs money (ie tomtom) work any better/more consistently
question 3 - could there be something wrong with my phone
question 4 - any ideas how to make it more stable
thanx for the help
also, on some of the gps programs, it will say i have found up to 8 or so sats, but wont lock onto any of them...
thanx again
have the hd2 wimax (4G) ?
i found this photo in official rom
name = functionwimax.png
!!!!!help!!!!!
there is also a registry key for wimax...
but that doesnt mean really much...
htc tends to leave some unused files and registry entries in the roms ...
it means it has the capabilty but not the hardware. so its not compatible

n wireless is used allover the world and it was deactivated ,also fm transmitter , i think bad tc drivers are stopping htc from activating these function ,we have wimax in egypt but only in two cities and not relative to a certain network ,may be in these countries wimax exists but not under a cellular network like sprint (like what we have in egypt)
I asked because I've already seen N wireless support and thought that the same applies to the wimax
that is disabled
but probably not. However pleasant
I thought US Wimax is CDMA?
I can not understand why there are buttons without the option.unnecessarily consume space
I found a setting on my tmous HD2 that lets you choose between CDMA and GSM and also different 3G frequencies. I wonder if they work once the phone is unlocked, or if there is some sort of hardware limitation to these settings. very interesting hmmm...
Stroking my long gotee and pondering.
just wondering what gps chip the x10 uses? i was driving around with google map opened on my x10 and noticed the blue circle (aprx where you are) is huge.. it stretches over 3-4 blocks at least a good 500m radius.. and then i looked at my iphone's google map and the tracking is much more accurate. also with the iphone my location moves as i move.. but on my x10 my tracker doesn't move at all. is it because the google map application is different on both phone? or the x10 have a cheaper gps? or my x10 is messed up~~
Your Xperia doesnt use gps. Have you enabled it? It looksl ike your Xperia gets the position with the help of the Mobile telephone system.
Yeah, sounds like you haven't switched on your GPS. Currently what you're seeing is your location determined roughly by triangulation of mobile network towers. Go to the wireless settings to turn on GPS and aGPS.
ya i just noticed the option got disabled again ~ i guess i forgot to turn it on again after i debranded the phone ~ thx
