Apple Cider doesnt kill g1's

After fighting to get this g1 running right two days later (today) i was holding it (not noticing) over a cup of apple cider, some unearthly force had me drop it it...
really weird- dont even remember letting go or having it slip through my fingers but one second it was in my hand the next it was in the cup.
i quickly pulled it out and yanked the batter
pulled the whole thing apart and sat all the main components openly over my gaming computers 200mm fan (antec 900 for you nerds) and two hours later ive managed to have it boot up just fine
Lets hope i havent spoken too soon- any other recommendations?
I've heard loads of people suggest placing the phone in a bowl of rice to draw out the moisture. Probably not much point doing that now, but you could if you want to be safe.
My Brothers old Nokia phone fell off his lap in a storm and was in a puddle for hours, let it dry out in the sun with its battery out and exposed, totally worked fine after.
So Apple Cider is fine. When you testing it with Pear cider then?! hehe
Glad you got it working. Must have been a heart stopping moment there!
Will keep the phone away from other drinks until tested.
Last week after bricking the phone I tried to totally kill it.
A 5kV mains electric generator for fence also doesnt break a G1.
Sparks jumping all over the phone and to ground when I connected across the battery contacts. Oddly still booted to standard bricking point.
Haha, Antec Nine Hundred ftw. Though I'm sure your G1 is upset about being drenched in "Apple" cider.
Rice Works
2% Milk in a cereal bowl won't kill it either...just saying.

lol u made a funny. this made me laugh. xD
Phones are more resilient than people think.. my old siemens c25 was practically indestructible. I once slipped down a hill in a thunderstorm and reflexively used it as a ground anchor.. when I got home and took the cover off, it was packed solid with wet, sticky mud. I thought it was a lost cause and didnt even bother cleaning it out.. just left it by the window for 24hrs and switched it back on.. absolutely fine. It ran for years after that, still full of mud.
I had an old Nokia phone go half down the drain of a toilet full a piss one morning....made sure to wash my hands after that
Had a MyTouch drop into a full glass of cranberry and vodka. Dissasembled and cleaned with 91% isopropyl alcohol. Still kicking 3 months later. HTC makes a tough device.

Poll - How many times have your dropped your N1 and has the screen cracked?

Im creating this poll as a piece of mind for myself, although i do understand conditions for each person may be different. Reading the posts about how easy it is to crack the N1 screen does worry me considerably. I hope this settles my and peoples minds a little more.
If leaving a post, please state the height of drop and surface.
Thanks!

dropped 1 time and its fine. dropped my iPhone about 10-20 times and screen was fine.
Never, and i hope still on this way xD
Zero should really be an option here. I don't think most people are that careless with their phones..

Yea I kind of forgot but can't seem to edit the poll.
None and don't plan on it since this is my baby
Three times so far all from about 4-5 feet, once on carpet where it bounced and hit the metal that holds in my sliding glass door, once on linoleum and once over concrete at work but luckily I foot saved it greatly reducing the impact, but so far not a scratch.
Dropped a couple of times, one from my lap onto the sidewalk as I got out of the car. Still scratch free and sexy as ever!

ahh i hate when that happens.
how about none and plan to keep it that way.
Dropped it once, while in the neoprene case (slipped out of my hand)...it hit the ground in the spot where the opening is though, and dented the metal part of the frame next to the 3.5 mm jack. I was pissed when it happened, but it's not that bad.

Accidentally killed my nexus one last year....

At about 11:00 pm, I had my Nexus one in my back pocket, as my new skinny jeans have no front pocket (yes I'm a girl). We were at a New Year's party, I went to the restroom, dropped my pants and heard a large PLOP. Horrified I turned around in slow motion knowing what I would see. Nice bubbles rising from my beautiful nexus one.
Now it's in a bag of rice, and hoping for the best. Thankfully I do have a squaretrade warranty on it!!
Sniff.

I hope you removed the battery immediately. Put it in a SEALED CONTAINER full of rice in a warm place or under some sunlight and leave it there AT LEAST 2-3 cycles of it accumulating moisture on the lid of the container. Each day or so, change out the rice, wipe down any moisture, fill it with fresh rice and start it over. Once no moisture is on the lid, do it one more time for a day or so. Do not put the battery in or try to power it on until that point.
And keep in mind your battery might be toast regardless. You might get lucky on the phone, however.
BTW, might not want to re-use the rice after, considering where the moisture is coming from

Thanks for the info.
I think I grabbed it really quickly from the toilet, but it felt like slow motion as it seemed like I stalled for 10 seconds, watching in horror the bubbles rising. I can still see it now! haha
I did immediately remove the battery. It's now in a ziplock of rice. It's been in there since 3 am this morning. There's moisture in the corners of the screen. Will wait it out. I am currently using a cheap freebie lg flip phone and it hurts, lol.
My fear is the fact that it was blue water... they had one of those deodorant things in the tank. That can't be good.
batteries are very cheap on ebay, $6.50 shipped
Dang, a girl with a N1 and skinny jeans here on XDA... just saying ;-)
Real bummer of the nexus.. I hope it survives. Would be a real shame if you left the N1 forums :-(
GL with drying the thing.

Yes, it's absorbent. We used to put rice in our salt shaker down in humid Louisiana to keep it from clumping.
And yes, the comment about not re-using the rice was very funny. If this thing works, then I have to think about the toilet water tainted phone against my ear.
Tasqa, I've got a nice rack too. Just saying. But I've got a skinny white girl ass.
Haha just kiddin
My mom dropped her phone in her coffee the other day.
Dried for two weeks with no rice. Now it has those coffe lines in the resistant touchscreen 0.o
Anyways I'm off to bed. Makin all those stupid jokes aint good for me (A)

Damn I would absolutely cry if that would've happened to me, for real though a girl with a N1 is sexy as hell.
Hope your N1 survives, keep us updated.

Yeah, just don't be in a hurry to use it, even if your current phone sucks compared... If you use it too fast you will kill it, right now there might be a chance.. Who knows about the blue sanitizer, but as long as it's not corrosive or conductive and leave nasty bits behind it might not be a problem.
I'd suggest a sealed tight tupperware dish with fresh rice and put it it somewhere warm or with sunlight, and again, keep changing it until it's at least past one cycle WITHOUT any condensation on the tupperware. It could be a week, but personally I'd rather be without the N1 for a week than forever.

unless you have a giant bag of desiccant in your house somewhere.
i submerged my N1 in teh sink while washing dishes. I had shoulder surgery and was on the phone doing dishes ( was my first mistake). I had my N1 in the sling with headphones on and when i leaned forward, it slid right under the running water. I grabbed it and dried it off best i could, took the battery, sim,sd,batter cover off. I then put it in a tupperware container buried in rice for 24 hours sealed and it works like it never happened
I dropped my N1 into the drain once. Fully submerged in water and I only manage to get it out a minute later.
Lucky it was in the pouch which made the water go in slower.
Put it in a dry cabinet (the ones for camera gear) for a day and happy to report I'm still using it now.

So, I couldn't resist trying, everything looked very dry. Patience has never been a virtue of mine. Soon as I woke up I stuck the battery in and fired this puppy up. I was worried, it stayed on the boot logo for what seemed like longer than usual, but she's up and running! Speaker seems to work fine, I haven't made a call yet but will in just a bit.
After dropping it in la toilette, I took off the screen protecter as well. This morning I notice when the screen is off, the reflection looks a little funny, kind of a different hue, slightly hazy reflection given off, but I'm not sure if that's just how it looks without a screen protector, or if it's a result of the blue water.
Phone is charging now, and that seems to be working fine too.
Sounds like a bit of luck there.

must... not... drop... my... S3......
I have the S3 and i can honestly say i am very disappointed.. I know glass breaks so get off my back.. But my Lg Optimus 3D fell from my ear and landed on concrete floor screen side down not a scratch on the screen. And it is not even Gorilla glass..
Even my brothers S2 fell a few times on our marble floor kitchen from the top of the fridge that is as tall as me.. And it's glass lived but the edge was a bit messed up.. But that was easy to fix another shell and it was fixed..
I do have a case and screen protector but this video has disappointed me in many ways...
It was good testing, I wanted to know if they still turned on afterwards and what those effects would have been. However they could do the same three tests later in the day and Apple could take the beating, it all depends on how your phone drops/lands. I don't put too much weight into these tests, cause if you drop a phone from 5ft and up on concrete its going to take damage whether it be external or internal.
It's terrible testing. The degree of damage all depends on how the phone hits the floor, rather than from what height it falls. This is shown nicely by the S3 which was fine after the kids chucked it up, but was smashed when in slid off the car.
To get meaningful results you would have to do many repeats, grade the damage and average it. Of course, no one has enough money to do countless repeats, which is why these tests are always bull.
Ignore this video...
Remember that iphone is the most fragile device.

Its not even a test. Its just square trade's marketing campaign.
You guys do realise this is from the same people who did the GS2 vs iP4 drop test video?
It's probably not fair to compare 2 products when the angle at which it falls can't be controlled. However, does anyone else get a sense that these new devices are more fragile than their previous iterations? It was like impossible to destroy my Vibrant (couldn't even brick it). I wonder if the increased size/weight is responsible.
Everything in this test is fair. The same test was with sgs 2 and I phone lost in every way. Just agree that sgs 3 is not that durable. And gorilla glass sucks.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
The test procedure SUCKS *** how can it be a good test? when they are just throwing the phone randomely. If you are making a drop test the 2 phones should drop in the same way/angle/height and so on, to find out exactly how the 2 phones do in damage at the same place.
I think this is a good test. They are basically showing how the phone would be drop dropped NATURALLY! Or close to it as possible. Now they could have done a more complete test, dropping it on the sides, back, and screen, and so on. But that would require for them to get a whole bunch of the phones, and that is costly. So that in mind. I appreciate anyone that does these kind of tests for us to see.
Oh yeah...I will be putting a case on mine
i think its fair to say, that the s3 is not as strong as the s2 is, the few tests/videos that have been posted imo confirm this
it could be as the glass is getting bigger, it also gets weaker, makes sense to me

What am I reading? This is a terrible test if what your going for is a scientific comparison between two devices. There are way too many variables! And just because they did the test before doesnt mean its valid. You could conduct those tests with two S3's and the results would be different from each other.
It's almost impossible to do this test in any type of economic fashion, you would have to make dummy S3's and iphone's with similar weight balance in the phone and load balance on the glass.
Most likely, thousands of tests have been done, both by samsung and apple, on both just the glass piece and dummy phones, in order to make sure that if your phone falls there will be a decent rate of recovery.

I agree when you drop your phone you cant predict how its going to land. Except it fan boys the phone build is asking for trouble...what was that about inspired about nature designed for humans....lol.
I didn't see comments about the unscientific nature of these tests when the S2 thrashed the iPhone
Still getting this but with the knowledge is more fragile.
I'm very disappointed in Gorilla Glass. I have an Atrix (Gorilla Glass 1) and the screen cracked from a minor fall from 2 feet. Gorilla Glass 2 (with the SGS3 anyway) seems to be not much of an improvement.
Send me broken ones. Thanks for the test.

I have to say after watching this I can't believe the people who say the phone fell out their pocket and the screen cracked, seems really strong according to this.

Well it depends, my S1 dropped no more than a foot out of my shirt pocket onto gravel and the screen cracked,I thimk it must have been bacause it was a point impact i.e a bit of grave as it shattered around a 1cm area but then had 2 diagonal cracks right across. Got it back yesterday as good as new from the repairers, but it gave me an excuse to buy an S3 :
Gotta admit she totally tortured it compared to the ipad.. Well done S3

i have dropped my phone 3 or 4 times from waist height nothing happened, even it flew in the air from my bed to floor, yet safe . i think the quality is not consistent across.
edit:
in the drop test vide the phone went in the air vertically and came down in the same vertical direction to the ground, if it was horizontal then the results would have been different , lol

My old iphone 3G was a tough little unit, dropped onto concrete from waist height, scraped the back a bit but survived fine. Also dropped onto gravel from waist height again, slight mark on screen but that was all.
So far I haven't dropped the S3 yet, but today it slid off my lap and smacked into my car door then went under the seat while taking a corner hard . Thought it was going to be a bit scraped but survived fine.

I really don't care about extreme heat or cold test, nor water test.. but that drop test... too bad she didn't show how the body of the phone hold up. Is the grey ring around the phone strong enough to resist scratches and impacts too?
