erm, its to do with conecting something - Networking

i was slightly unsure where to put this, but networking seemed the most apropriate.
I have the device emulators that microsoft provide, but i am currently struggling to get it to connect to my pc, to connect with activesync and stuff like that, which i know it can!
I want to do this so i can try different roms and stuff like that on it
or something
is there any way of using/flashing another rom to the device emulator?
i know theres an option to specify another rom for use, but it seems to be disabled
anyone got any ideas?

Networking

Sorry, but can someone tell me why do networking with my XDAII..like what benefits as I still get Internet connection over bluetooth
it's faster
you dont need a bluetooth and activesync for it to work it will work on any wifi network
did i mention how much faster it is ?
it's more reliable then bluetooth which always seem to give people trouble from time to time
how do I share files over bluetooth when connected to my pc. like see files i ve shared on my pc? thx
The only program I have ever tried to perform this task is called PocketLANce. This will install a server on your machine that runs in the system tray and gives an interface on your XDA that is similar to Network Neighbourhood. It works ok, but was a little unpredicatable on mine. Prolly through my own fault though.
Good Luck,
Rob.
PS.. If anyone knows of a similar app for use over wifi, please let me know

Was this using Bluetooth then? If so, cool! I didn't think the XDA2 had the right BT profile to allow LAN networking over Bluetooth. It's something that Tobias is working on with his Pocket Bluetooth Tools, but it wasn't available last time I looked.

AAAHHHHH this phone stinks!!!!!!!!

WHY DOSN'T Activesync work?????
I can put up with Activesync not working under VPC on my Mac but I CANNOT put up with it not Activesyncing with a brand new 2 month old IBM laptop running XP Pro and all the latest patches.
Is it the phone that is at fault or Microsoft or a combination?????
My old PDA2K Activesyncs fine on BOTH VPC and the IBM so why not this device?
Anyone PLEASE HELP ME.......
Robin
Are you using ActiveSync v.4.1?
If it is a Windows Mobile 5 device (Wizard, Universal) instead of a Windows Mobile 2003SE Device, you need a minimum version 4.1 of ActiveSync
Yup it is a Wizard and I am using AS 4.1.
I have tried Firewall on, off, VPN on, off.
I have de-installed and re-installed 4.1.
Still NOTHING.
The Laptop see's new hardware, says it has installed okay and then AS does NOTHING.!!!!!!!!
Robin
in my case it was the firewall
you sure both your windows and software firewall is off?
also check in network connections that your phone network connection is connected
what happens in activesync... errors? does it display its trying to sync ? just "it is not syncing" doesnt help
If the laptop sees the device as new hardware and not the actual device it means that you do not have active Synch 4.1 or that the installation was borked . because 4.1 includes the drivers for this phone to be recognized by windows.. so if you had 4.1 it would show your phone name and then it might not have worked , but not the way you are describing it now.
Also you might wanna put up a bit more objective title when posting something like this if you want psotive feedback instead of flamez...
very good point avocaz
totally missed the point that it does detect but possibly does not install which would be down the active sync 4.1 not being there

1. Certainly I turned off the Windows Firewall, don't know about any other Firewall. HOWEVER the fact my PDA2K can connect surely rules out a Firewall problem?
2. Don't know how to do this? I am a Mac user and am using XP JUST to sync my phone.
3. Nothing happens in Activesync. I get the normal, bing bong chime. but the AS icon does not turn green or open.
If I manually open AS and tellit to cennect it cannot find an attached PDA.
On the other hand if I attach my PDA2K I get the bing bong, the icon turns green, AS opens fine.
Is that clearer?
Is there any more info you need?

But surely the fact that when I connect my PDA2K AS 4.1 opens and works indicates it IS there and working?
If I check its version it says 4.1?
AS 4.1 is the first instal of AS on this machine, never had an earlier version on it.
Sorry about the title but I guessed I would at least get some response with it.
I am pulling my hair out here and don't want to return the phone but without a computer connection it is totally useless to me.
Robin
Its not your desktop. Its the AS client on the device itself that causes these problems. Apparently, the next ROM Update is supposed to fix all AS issues. Just hold on till mid-Jan.

Sounds reasonable HOWEVER if I cannot get the damn thing to connect to a PC I am never going to be able to laod the new rom to fix the problem it won't connect to a pc, so I won't be able to connect ot a PC ...........
I am losing it big time...
How would I install the update without a PC connection?
Robin
Use the wifi to download the rom ? Sorry your having problems but this phone definately doesnt stink. Havent put mine down since Christmas day .... the wife is definately not pleased. She keeps giving it daggers
Okay
My FIRST bit of success.
I found out my laptop has a IRD port and the phone HAS connected via this so it is most certainly a USB issue.
Now the question is can a rom update be done of IRD or does it need to be the USB connection?
Robin
PS WiFI download would not help as the rom needs to be loaded FROM a PC.
Just a thought, but are you connecting via a usb hub?
Best not to, and I find always using the same usb socket also helps...

Had the same problem.
What helped me is: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/pocketpc/tshoot/activesync/default.asp
Good luck,

DO NOT INSTALL ROM UPDATE VIA IR.
It should be done via USB ONLY. Thats one of the main instructions in the ROM update page that pops up on executing the RU file.
I had problems because of the ports. AS4.X needs a hand full of ports to communicate with the PPC, in my case TCP Port 990 was already in use.

HOw do I check this, I am not very PC Literate.
I am much more used to a Mac where things normally 'just work' :?
I have just noticed a couple of things following some of the Microsoft trouble shooting guide.
If I have AS open on the KJAM it shows the spinning green button and that it is trying to connect, still nothing on the PC end.
HOWEVER what I did notice on the PC end in Device Manager is that a Windows mobile-based device appears under netowrk connectors.
So SOME KIND of connection IS happening.
Robin
PS Many thanks for being a sounding board for me and your helpful ideas, it is very much appreciated, I just wish I was making more progress.
Let me set the record straight.
This phone does NOT stink. The more I use it the more I like it.
Certainly it is a big improvement over my PDA2K in size and usability.
HOWEVER I still cannot get it to connect to my laptop and I am getting so frustrated cause its the last thing left for me before I really start to LIKE this phone..............
Any more ideas out there because I have tried everything I can think of with no luck at all except via IRDA.

Controlling PC over WiFi

Is there a program that allows you to use your Wizard to remotely control your PC over Wifi?
I remember my friend had one on his Universal that allowed him to use bluetooth to control his PC but I don't remember the name. Also, not sure if it was the phone's fault but the picture was slow to refresh. Unfortunately, he's now sold his Universal and said good riddance to anything affiliated with it...
There were a couple of programs that let you use your Wizard as a keyboard input device but do these also let you control mouse and let you see what's going on?
Yes, try this!

there is a terminal services client built in as well...
Thanks for the replies.
Yeah... the in built Terminal Services Client didn't work for me and I guessed that it was just the inbuilt stuff being useless.
Unfortunately the vncviewer doesn't seem to work either. I'm beginning to suspect that there's something wrong with my Wizard or my home WiFi setup in general.
Oh well, time to go fiddlin'
On my device it works perfectly. You can also run the program on your desktop pc to test it.
Can you ping your pocket pc from a desktop pc?
No, I can't ping my Wizard; I tried this first and nothing goes through.
I had thought that my router wasn't letting anything through but I can ping the other computer on my network just fine.
I did try the program but I can't connect to the other computer on my network. I only know the basic home networking stuff so it's probably something to do with my wireless router. Do the ports matter?
The ports don't matter because ping takes place far under the TCP/UDP layer. On my router (fritzbox 7050) there is an option where you must allow that wifi devices may communicate with each other in general. This is the only restriction I can think of if your other computers are hardwired.
However, I can ping my wizard just fine when he's connected to my router. Have you enabled DHCP? If so, try to (disable it and) manually assign an IP to the wizard.
My router (Belkin F5D7633) doesn't have any options to enable or disable communications.
I tried assigning the IP address manually and switching DHCP off and this has allowed pinging but I still can't use either the inbuilt terminal services or the vncviewer.
I think I'm going to give up trying to use my Wizard for this and just stick with a laptop...
Maybe this should be said, but I thought you surely know ....
In order to use the vncviewer program, there has to be a vncserver program running on some machine. try realvnc for example http://www.realvnc.com/.
Install this on a local desktop machine and then try that viewer again.
If you already did that, then sorry
 Don't be sorry. Actually I already have the free verison of VNC running on all my machines and I have a license for Access Remote PC from a while ago to transfer files when my Windows XP stopped displaying some folders across the network.
I think that's where my problem is: either in my network or in my operating system. I do access my PC from my laptop but I just thought it'd be nice if I could do it from my phone too. Oh well... but thanks for the help though, you've been very thorough
no problem  the last thing I would try in your case is to open up a general server on your desktop pc with a program like netcat. then grab a telnet application or the internetexplorer on ppc and try to connect there with that. worth a try at least...
How can i use this with macs? Is there another software available?

Tether Windows Mobile 6 and Linux WITH USB NOT BT[SOLVED]

SOLVED: USE USB-RNDIS-LITE FROM SYNCE'S WEBSITE
Now that the wmodem app has been pushed out in favor of 'internet sharing', how can we do this? I notice that the wmodem app still exists on my phone ( ppc 6800) but when i tap to open it nothing happens.
I have been playing around, and getting desperate here, since I seem to be the only one interested. They figured out the iphone in a matter of a week or so!
I was thinking maybe it was possible using the iphone technique by setting up a proxy on the phone and doing it via wifi, but the siftware is missing.
The only hope that I have now is to maybe utilize the program 'synce' to accomplish this. Since I heard pdanet tethers through an activesync connection (which is what synce does), maybe it'd be a matter of a few 'route' and 'iptables' commands.
One other note, my phone is recognized as different things depending on what option I have set in 'connections>usb to pc' with 'advanced network functionality' set to off, the ipaq driver gets loaded and this is how i can use synce. With the box checked it shows up as an eethernet rndis device and cdc_ether and rndis_host modules are loaded. however, when i turn on the internet sharing app it gets recognized as a whole different UNKNOWN device. Im thinking a patch to the right mmodules might fix this, and i'm not using the module usb-rndis-lite because it never worked for me, even though i saw a patch for that module that does just that, make the system recognize it as an ethernet device.
Someone else chime in here, I cant be the only linux enthusiast with a cell phone out there. We dont ALL live in the parents basement
I HAD TO EDIT TO SPECIFY I NEED A USB SOLUTION AND NOT BLUETOOTH

To quote Sherlock Holmes...."Elementary Watson"...you do a search.
I'll ignore the fact you posted the same thing in multiple places. I'll also ignore the fact you apparently can't be bothered to do a search on "linux internet sharing" and want someone else to do it for you.

sorry to say, i've been googling this for weeks and it has eluded me. but thanks for the links, even though you decided to flame me. I'll check them out and report back if they work or not.
P.S. - I dont deny I also posted thisin the titan forum, I posted it here because obviously it gets more views here and it's not just a titan question.
Now lemme go see if any of your links actually work.. )
FIRST EDIT: Maybe I should have specified I need to do this via USB for 1: bluetooth is slower, when tethering to evdo, and 2: i dont have bluetooth.
My bad for not specifying but maybe you can be less snappy to me now. I imagine all your links are for bluetooth, i only checked out the first on so far, but we'll see. Im gonna edit my first post to say USB

Good luck with that..to my knowledge the usb drivers to connect to wm6 under linux don't exist because the usb connection is totally different for usb internet sharing than it was for USB dun. WM6 has not been around long enough for many people under linux to fool with it. The only options I can think of off top of my head is to try to force ndiswrapper into using the drivers that come with activesync 4.5 (that's where you'll have to extract the windows drivers) or run vmware or virtualbox which can both pass usb devices to a vm and have the phone be used by XP inside a vm..then set the linux box to use the xp connection as a gateway..a kludgy hack at best.
While the theoretical top speeds of EVDO do outpace bluetooth none of the articles I've read indicated people in real life situations had been able to GET these speeds from their provider. If you can, more power to you. For my use of edge the $5 bluetooth dongle was alot easier.
I also had an idea to use ndiswrapper as well, wasnt real sure of the drivers to use. I was aware of the internet sharing app changing device id's and it not acting as a modem.
But, as you'll see in my first post, the phone is recognized as a usb rndis device. you can see this by looking at the tail of dmesg. It's just that when you start the internet sharing app, the phone changes its device id again. Also as I already stated, there is a patch for the usb-rndis-lite driver that comes with synce, that supposedly makes the box recognize it as an ethernet device while in internet sharing mode, so maybe its a matter of putting some device id's into cdc_ether.ko or corresponding module.
Another idea, would be to somehow get the wmodem app working on the phone itself, as I said it's still there in wm6, it just wont start. I have also seen in the phines registry plenty of reference to the phone acting as a modem so the framework is still there as well, ITs just a matter of getting the wmodem app going! Probably a registry key somewhere. In fact in the WMODEM registry key itself, the one you use to disable NAI, here is a key called WMODEMDUN, but every time i set it to one from the default zero it changes back. I hate to buy a bt adaptor for only this reason when i know there is an existing solution for usb out there, but yeah you're right..wm6 just hasnt been around long enough
So in short, with wm6 the phone emulates a usb rndis ethernet device instead of modem, it actually shows up as eth1 on my box, but when i start the internet sharing app the device id changes to an unknown one.
Also i wanted to add, I have definitely tether with xp and virtualbox easily, been doing that since i got the phone, so to anyine windering it's possible for sure. would be perfect if i could route that back to the host os.

You can route it back to the host by running a proxy and/or bridging the interfaces (virtual box.org has instructions on that).
Certain versions of AKU 3.0 and up come with a wmodem app that still has usb and infrared (not bluetooth) in addition to the internet sharing. They may still use the old method and you may be able to use them as a model to get it working on yours. If I remember correctly the NBD wizard rom had both internet sharing and a modem link application like that.
I can tell you this..DON'T try to flash a rom onto your phone using virtualbox.
I might try to route it through virtualbox then, for now. I did try to google that as well but i couldnt think of any defining keywords.
For now, flashing is out of the question,,, because my phone is CID LOCKED? I'm not so sure of the terminology cause i just got into pda's. But I know atm I cant flash anything that isnt signed by htc. Its only a matter of time i'm sure/hope.
In the meantime, hopefully people that are too cheap to buy a bt adaptor such as myself might figure out how to run the wmodem app that exists already on the phone

Question on ATT 8525 Software cd and activesync

I am so new to this and already I have spent all day trying to activesync my phone to my PC. I constantly get the cant detect device or usb device not recognized it has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it. Am I missing something like a software disk. I must have tried everything they ask me to do 10 times and I still get the message. I actually jut uninstalled the 4.5 activesync software that I had downloaded. My question is there some software that I am supposed to install on my computer like the cd software you see that comes with the phone new. I bought this off ebay and so far it is working fine but I did not get a cd with it like I see other people get. Im wondering if this is the case. As mentioned I really dont know anything at all about this stuff and I am trying to learn so any help will be greatly appreciated
Sincerely
Mike
Long Island
Theres a setting in the phone that needs to be changed. Click start/ settings/ connections/ USB to PC/ uncheck the Enable advanced network function. Reinstall Activesync and should work after that. At least that what I have to do with my 8525.
