Hey guys and gals.
I've just got an i-mate pocket pc and I want to upgrade it to wm6.
I started out looking in the official places (club i-mate etc.) and flashed it with the latest firmware available there, but unfortunately it's still wm2003.
From what I've read here and on buzzdev.net I'm guessing it's considered a himalaya, but I really have no clue what that means.
Info on the device is:
Version:
ROM version: 1.72.00WWE
ROM date: 03/15/04
Radio version: 1.14.00
Protocol version: 1337.24
ExtROM version: 1.72.800
Hardware:
CPU: Intel(R) PXA263
Speed: 400 MHz
RAM size: 128 MB
Flash size: 32 MB
Flash chip type: 28F128K3
Data bus: 32 bits
Storage size: 14.75 MB
LCD: 240 x 320 TFT
Colors: 65536
Identity:
Model No.: PH10B
Platform: PocketPC
IMEI: 3159***********
Or at least that's what the OS reports.
When I opened it up to clean it I noticed it had HTC chips in it so I don't know...
Any info as to where to start and what I need to know before I do would be appreciated.
P.S. I've attached a photo of it if it'll help with identification.

the rom packet include a readme text file which describe step by step how you do it
Ah... Thanks.
Just a quick Q:
What ROM packet should I download?
**EDIT
Nevermind that... I'm downloading the ROM packet now...
Thanks again
hi
did u mangage to do it ? as i have same xda o2 ii
Yeah... I did manage to upgrade... It's fairly simple if you just follow the instructions in the rom packet step by step

It's a LOT quicker than wm2003. Unfortunately I've never used wm5 on this device so i can't compare

From what i understand, the extrom is used to automatically install the applications inside it when the device is reset or loses it's memory.
The extrom version on your device is blank because that section of the rom was added to the main rom storage area to make space for wm5/6.
I don't know about removing the ramdisk but it was mentioned somewhere in the thread Rudegar pointed me to (see above)

Update: Ramdisk is no longer required if you upgrade to ROM version 1.60b96...
Because I was asked a lot for this... useful especially for WM5 version 1.60A / WorldWideEnglish.
Buzz explained to me how to convert his 96MB ramdisk into a smaller size:
1. Install the ramdisk cab and DO NOT soft reset the device
2. Go into the registry and edit the following key:
[HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RAMdisk]
"Size"=dword:2000000
"Address"=dword:96000000
the size is as follows: 6000000 = 96MB, 4000000 = 64MB, 2000000 = 32 MB
the address is as follows: 92000000 for 96MB, 94000000 =for 64MB, 96000000 =for 32MB
3. Soft reset the device
Remark: I am using V1.60a / 32 MB persistant ROM (16MB storage, 16MB extended ROM) that I patched to 96 MB RAM. Please see the postings below for patching instructions. With the patch my ramdisk survives softresets. You can patch your own version easily, just make sure that you patch it according to the ramdisk size you want to use.
Cheers
Pat

Remark: I am using V1.60a / 32 MB persistant RAM. The ramdisk is volatile as it uses part of the 128 MB volatile RAM of version 1.60a. Hence if you softreset your device, the ramdisk loses its contents.

32 Mb persistant RAM ??? How ???
16 Mb storage and 16 Mb Extrom , ou 32 Mb Storage ?
TofClock
I'm using the standard version 1.60a that has 16MB storage and 16MB extended ROM that are both persistant.
That's the great advantage of 1.60a compared to the 1.5xxx versions...
Cheers
Pat
but i thought the RAMDisk will not work with 1.60a... will it? :?:
Yes it works with size = 32MB.
I think the original 96MB size is locking-up the XDA with the 128MB ram 1.60a, but I have no issues at all with the 32MB size.
Cheers
Pat
and everything in the RAMDisk is deleted on soft reset?
thanks for the info.
deleted.
well, 1.60a + RAMDisk 64Mb is perfectfor me -- I'll have 64 Mb of space to put stuff in while I use the WiFi.
now, i just hope somebody finds a solution for the rec/cam button problem...
one thing i noticed while using RAMDisk is that the memory it allocates is not subtracted from the size of the main memory. will this be a problem? :?:
anyway, great work buzz. you're the best! :!:
Can somenone post a link or send me the ramdisk cab please ????

Guys ..
patch first the ROM to avoid OS to use the Whole 128MB ram then change the Address and Size of Ramdisk in the registry so the content will survive in a Soft reset ..
-toe
Just a sanity check for myself, when you say 32 megs persistent you mean 16 Storage and 16 ExtRom, right? You do not mean that the two 16meg partitions have somehow been merged into one 32 meg partition and I somehow missed this event.

This is normal???

This turn PDA slow after open 2/3 programs!
How improve this?

Sound similar to mine....when I reset the Wizard I get a few minutes where I only have about 9MB of free RAM (Program Memory) but that settles down after a while and I normally have about 26MB free (using Pocket Plus to close down applications when I hit the close button).
I am suffering from some memory leaks, after a soft reset I have abvout 25 MB free, after a while this drops to about 16 MB, and I have no idea where it goes.
@ arp: a lot of your RAM is consumed by running Wm5 and your apps in Ext ROM
Think, you have a lot of useless progs in Ext. Rom.
I have 47Mb free...
How did u do THAT??? I have only 44MB program memory AT ALL... ???
Yeah, with 47 MB user available to start with, how did you manage to get all the RAM free of any software?
I've fully cleaned extended RAM, didn't find there any good app. for my taste )).
ROM - Qtek_9100_RUU_Prodigy_10107105_Qtek_WWE_ship
i wonder what is extended RAM???
Even if you clean extended rom, you won't have all the memory available for yourself... could you post a screenshot?
sorry ... extended ROM
RAM
Strange!!!
I deleted my extended_ROM too (but has only 2,5MB too!) and made a Hard Reset to my MDA Vario, and have only 27,5MB free like I said!
More strange... Total program memory (RAM) is only 44,08MB! How you have 47MB free???
I think you are wrong... see...
Regards
I have 47,46Mb free, and now - 44,25Mb after setting up customization (LEng) and couple progs..
Could you *please* tell us exactly what u r doing, and post a screenshot if possible (the settings-memory-page). Only cleaning the ext.rom doesn't do the job for sure.
Only telling your numbers doesn't help anybody here...
Are you sure that you don't confuse RAM and ROM? But even on ROM, I don't think you could have so much free space...
I didn't do something special...
I have no idea how to make a screenshot .
My settings-memory-page:
...............Storage........Program
Total.........47,46Mb....... 49,97Mb
In Use.......3,21Mb..........16,84Mb
Free..........44,25Mb.........33,13Mb
I think yes, it was my RAM-ROM mistake... sorry.
no problem
However, I have only 44.08MB ov RAM available, no big, but it IS a difference. And for the ROM I also had never only 3MB used... (I have to admit that I never did an hardreset, because I had the opinion that o2 doesn't install so many things from ext.rom)
More RAM please...
Hello Button,
This is mime:
Storage Program
Total: 47,46 44,08
In use: 21,55 20,25
Free: 25,92 23,83
I have installed: SPB Pocket plus, PhoneAlarm, TomTom5, Sunnysoft backup, Resco Explorer, PhatPad andWiFiFofum.
Did you upgrade your ROM from this file?
ROM - Qtek_9100_RUU_Prodigy_10107105_Qtek_WWE_ship
(think is in xda - FTP, right?)
What programs do you have installed?
Regards
arp:
Yes, this prodigy rom.
I have installed:
Paragon LEng, Paragon CharMap, MDS Customization.
After SR nothing has changed...
Button
BTW, what is this ROM (OS) version? From file I can't see well... and I don't know if is newer or not.
Mine is (at boot):
ipl: 1.03
spl: 1.03
gsm: 1.4.10.0
os: 1.3.2.2
What was your original ROM? (Qtek, O2, T-Mobile, i-Mate...?)
Why you upgrade it?
Yout Total ROM is same, but RAM 44MB (mine) to 50MB (your) is more 6MB of RAM... I think I will change my ROM...
How do you made that? Only rum these .exe file?
Regards
arp
I don't remember my original rom ver., I didn't backup it, it was first Qtek UK revision. Now I have (from file you know ):
ipl: 1.01
spl: 1.01
gsm: 1.1.10.0
os: 1.1.7.5
I have really changed nothing. Just erase all progs from ext. rom.
Moreover, I've tried different roms, and always got 50 Mb as total.. May be we have some hardware differences? Look at system-about screen. I can see there:
Processor: OMAP850-195MHz
Memory: 50,00 MB
So, You?
I have a Qtek 9100 and did an upgrade with the dutch Qtek ROM.
After this I also had less ROM and RAM free.
Now I have the Imate ROM witch says it is version 1.1.9.3
Now I also have RAM 49.97 with about 25 free
and ROM 47.46
I think it depends on the type of Romversion you have.
Probably language takes some space.
I also had a lot more proceses running in the dutch ROM.
So if you want more space take the I-mate or the Qtek WWE-ROM
Well Button,
I think my ROM is newer...
How do you flash new ROM? Just "run" new rom file (after unlock CID device?)
At about screen I can see: OMAP850-195Mhz and 44.11 MB !
Somebody have 50MB too, like Button?
Regards
Hi, this is my first time here. I just bought an I-mate JAM today.
The firmware on my device is as under;
ROM version: 1.1100 WWE
ROM dare: 03/14/05
Radio version: 1.11.00
Protocol version: 1337.42
ExtROM version: 1.11.183 WWE
I wanted to know if I could upgrade the ROM to a newer version?
If yes, how?
Sorry if this is n00bish but i've never had a pocket pc. All my life i've had a Symbian based phone.
Yes you can easily upgrade your device, make a backup of the ext-rom thought before you start. This part contains all kind of extra's like operator settings, backgrounds & applications. To do this you must make a link, via Act.Sync on the hidden file on your PPC: \windows\loadvdisk.exe. Put this link on your PPC in \windows\startup & start it with file explorer on the PPC. Now the ext-rom is shown & you can create a backup. After every soft-reset the loadvdisk.lnk is executed so it will remain visible almost for ever.
When you upgrade the rom, you will also have a new ext-rom content with provider settings, which might not be suitable for you. All you have to do is put the cabs containing the settings from your ori. ext-rom on your device & click on them to install.

hello everyone!
i am running wm06 for a while now and have to admit, its fckng great!
i upgraded from wm2003 directly to wm06, so its like two different worlds...
but when i was upgrading, i did not manage to merge the extrom with the rest of the storage, the unhide and unlock thing just didn't work!
but as i am now sure, that i wont need to roll back to 2003 again, merging the extrom with the rest of the storage would only make it better, no disadvantages, am i right?
or am i needing the extrom in wm06?
how is it used in wm06?
or is it just wasted space....?
as u can easily see, i am still a little confused about all that....
here are some specs from my device:
ROM Version: 5.60.00 WWE
ROM Date: 03/02/05
Radio Version: 1.15.00
Protocol Version: 1337.45
ExtROM Version: - (nothing here...??? is that bad??)
STORAGE:
total: 42,92MB
in use: 28,26MB
free: 14,66MB
PROGRAM:
total: 109,12MB
in use: 40,23MB
free: 68,90MB
thx for any help,
regards,
krz
ExtROM: Extended ROM - is the section of the ROM which the distributor of the phone (eg O2, T-Mobile, iMate, etc) store their customization (eg Today theme, ring tones, extra software) data.
In WM2003 you may found your phone having hardreset quite often - thats because WM2003 use RAM as program-storage (RAM lose everything when battery is drained)
In WM5/6 you are not using RAM as a storage anymore thus not performing hardreset often (typically once during flash)
By performing ExtROM merge, you're going to have extra MB in storage. There is NO DISADVANTAGE.
Those who prefer to have an ExtROM for whatever reason (they may HardReset their phone quite often because of testing/developing/whatever) place the "ExtROM" folder in Storage Card (Memory card/SD/MMC) and after HR it gets installed as usual. Or you can install fixes and addons "one by one".
Read more information here : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_ERK_Understand
----
To sum it up :
You dont need to merge your ExtROM (it cost you some MB)
* How to merge / is here : http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Blueangel_WM6_WizzardMain
thx a lot for your answer, kerio...!!
if i understood you right, the EXTROM is of NO USE at all in WM06.
so if not merged before upgrading, it will be just invisible and unused space.... am i right?
if so, i would of course prefer to merge the EXTROM with the rest of the storage to gain more free megabytes....
will the total storage size be 60,3MB after merging, like i have seen in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326515 ?!?
is it possible to merge the EXTROM after having WM06 installed?
can i merge EXTROM without reinstalling WM06 and all programs?
btw: unhiding and unlocking is NOT working on my device....
when clicking UNHIDE, nothing happens,
when clicking UNLOCK i get the following error:
Code:
ERROR: FL_IOCTL_BDTL_HW_PROTECTION - The parameter is incorrect.
what am i doing wrong??
i know, that are a lot of questions, but i would be very thankful if someone could help me with that...
thx in advance!
regards,
krz
bump bump
I would also be interested if somebody suuggests new solutions for "big storage" as my device does accept unlock and unhide, but when using "repart_DOC.exe" it gives me errors and eosn't repartition the ROM...
Downgrade to WM2003 , play da game and flash to wm6
Xeon's got the idea. You will need to to downgrade to WM2003, unlock, unhide and repartition the extrom. Once complete then flash up to the WM6.
I had to do the same thing, as I had not correctly repartitioned the extrom when I moved up too WM5. Good luck.
hello and thx a lot for all your ansers!
how many MBs will I gain from merging EXTROM?
and is there a way to use that space without merging?
anyone knows??
i have wm2003 and i can't unhide , unlock, or format doc, cos everytime i'm trying i can see , FL_IOCTL_BDTL_HW_PROTECTION the parameter is incorrect, can anyone help me?

Advise the wiki should be revised as so many people are confusing about the ExtROM.

Dear kerio,
I did read the Wiki regarding the ExtROM for more than 3 three times, I can't get any informations that we can't modify the ExtROM in OS wm5.0 or wm6.0 from the thread - Understanding the Blue Angle Extended ROM:-
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_ERK_Understand
Understanding the Blue Angle Extended ROM
The Extended ROM is shipped as ms_.nbf and loaded with the BaUpgradeUt.exe
The ms_.nbf is extracted during the Upgrade and written to folder \Extended_Rom
The \Extended_Rom folder is hidden and read only
The Extended ROM can un hidden with the following tool Unlock tool
The Extended ROM is limited to 16MB in size
The Numbering of the Extended ROM is operator dependent:
Thus a QTEK version 1.22.225 might or might not have higher patches than a I-Mate version 1.22.62
Extended ROMs are built around the major OS release (1.22, 1.31)
It is NOT advisable to install cabs from a Extended ROM if the Windows Mobile 2003 Version are not the same
It is NOT advisable to install patches if the CE versions (1.22, 1.31) are different.
(They might have already been included in that CE version.)
Execution of the Extended ROM
CheckAutorun.exe (which is started from \Windows\Startup\CheckAutorun.lnk) executes the AutoRun.exe
AutoRun.exe is found in the \Extended_Rom Folder
AutoRun.exe reads the \Extended_Rom\Config.txt and executes the commnands in that file
The pointer for AutoRun.exe HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AutoRun is set to \Extended_ROM\AutoRun
The pointer for Config.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\AutoRunCFG is set to \Extended_ROM\AutoRunCFG
The Touch screen is disabled by the first command (TPDisable.exe)in the Config.txt
The Touch screen is enabled by the 2nd to last command (TPEnable.exe)in the Config.txt
The last Command of the config.txt (RST) performs a soft reset
Content of the Extended ROM
The Extended ROM consists of System files (TPDisable.exe, TPEnable.exe, AutoRun.exe, Config.txt)
The Extended ROM consists of *.CAB installation files
The installation files fall into the following types
Applications: Album, Fax, Zip
Patches for the Hardware: Button9 on the Hardware Keyboard
Patches for the software: Blue tooth upgrade
Provider specific files and programs: Splash screen, Internet Explorer defaults, telco settings, etc.
Effects of a Hard Reset
A Hard Reset will NOT re-extract the ms_.nbf
A Hard Reset will reload the contents of the \Extended_Rom folder
A Hard Reset will reload the OS and thus also clean the registry
Why is this of interest to me?
The Extended ROM can be cooked (Customize the ROM to your own liking)
What ever you put in the \Extended_Rom folder will remain even after a Hard Reset
The \Storage will not be overwritten on a Hard Reset
Thus one is able to keep CAB files on \Storage for automatic reinstallation after a Hard Reset
You can keep your "customized" Extended ROM and only perform a OS or Radio Upgrade

"you must revert back to WM2003" - may be found at other threads but i think this thread "Understanding the Blue Angle Extended ROM" should include this message.
Thank you.
I dont think so
When performing upgrade you should follow the instruction (WM5 and WM6 pages) when you dont - then you may find yourself in trouble.
1. The main page is only for WM2003
2. Error message -> google -> sollution (30sec)
3. You can add it to the wiki (anyone can)

Guys and Gals
The BA Wiki was started over 2 years or more ago by a new guy on the forum who trying to work out how to get his German MDAIII flashed with an English rom.
He wrote it in order that the information was found in one place as he found it hard to find it in all the threads, this finding problem is still true today.
Well as you see times have changed and the porblems of WM5 and WM6 were not know at that time and as you also see not many people have bothered to invest time back into documneting in wiki. Its become more of a get and ***** about wiki not being updated than a give back some of the time in searching the threads and update wiki for the next person.
Some were in the begining it says if you don't like what you read then fix it.
This is best done by those people that are going through the learning curve as they read Wiki and they should beable to correct / add / embelish on what is written and what needs to be said.
Its a thought.

Misson impossible is that type of Cab file that is no longer there after a hard reset (or when they are executed) as they delete themselves.
Change the properties to read only will solve that.

Thank you for figuring out the solution.
I have the 8525 with official HTC WM6 rom upgrade and have this EXACT problem. It's been driving me crazy since I first noticed it.
The only difference is that I'm using the xplode HTC Home - All Device Fixed version.
If anyone has an idea as to what causes this and if there is a way to fix it without removing HTC Home I'd appreciate it.
As mentioned above the phone seems to work fine except I do see occasional glitches with other information on the phone etc and wonder if it is a result of this problem.
EDIT:: 03-22-08
I think I may have just found something. I was in the registry and decided to check the HTC HOME Reg Keys. Under this key I found something strange
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCHome\PROFILE\AUTO\] There are three items.
One is "Disp" with no values
another is "Type" with DWord value of 0x0 (0)
The other that is interesting is
"Path" with several boxes for the value data which is identical to many of the items under Device Information.
Could someone that is running HTC home on Cingular/AT&T official WM6 Rom please check your device info to ensure it is correct and then check those registry values and post results?
Thanks
I'm not running AT&T rom but the path entry is blank on mine, not sure if that helps you.
Thank you. I did recently try blanking it out to see what would happen and still had the same problem with the Device Info app.
I've also tried stopping the HTCHome.dll's and doing a soft reset and still had the issue of no information.
I'll post if I find something.
