Weather report without GPRS - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi guys!
Already asked in other sub-forum, but no reply there, hopefully more luck here.
Since GPRS and other mobile internet is expense in Belgium, isn't there an application that loads the weather report for the next week, everytime you sync your Touch Dual (or whatever HTC...) to your PC/Laptop. That way, you wouldn't have to use GPRS to get weather reports.
In my case it would drastically lower my gprs cost(since I sync every day!), and still have the eye candy of all those fancy apps you guys made here!
Grtz & thx very much!

in my country gprs is also so expensive..so I need it too..anyone can help us?

try this
1-turn on flight mode
2-sync your phone
3-tap update on weather app you use

Doesn't it work to turn on wifi (if your phone has it) and instead of using GPRS, it loads the data over the wifi? I know I've done this with Google Maps, and many other programs since I don't have a data plan.

Spb Weather does exactly what you want.
In the options you can specify to sync when docked and otherwise to sync only manually.
I'm using it since a while and had no sync through GPRS till now.

Don't know where it is getting it's info from or how, but i have just put Mobile Shell on a Himalaya, XDA II, and put a pay-as-you-go SIM in it with no credit.
Left it for a while after telling the weather bit where i am and lo and behold the weather forecast has updated.

GPRS connections out of control?

I am using SPB's GPRS traffic counter and have noticed that without my doing anything, my Jam will download around 100k of data every day (around £0.25 on Vodafone). I can just about survive the financial shock ;-) but I am more worried to know how control connections in general.
Does anyone know what programs on the Jam keep a GPRS connection alive? (I am not using MS Messenger, nor do I have either MS Explorer, the e-mail application or Activesync runnig in the background).
cheers.
I see that you have checked the usual suspects how about MMS this uses GPRS as well maybe you received some? The application you mention (SPB GPRS Monitor) does not tell you which application uses GPRS?
unfortunately is not the mms client - I stopped its installation after a hard reset.
I even go as far as killing off the messaging app and internet explorer with the memory control panel to make sure they don't accidentally run in the background.
my guess is a leaky tcp/ip stack, but i'm still looking for ways of controlling outgoing packets...

Alternetives for SPB GPRS Monitor !?
Does anyone have any alternetives for SPB GPRS Monitor. This program makes the OS on my i-mate JAM very unstabele. So I had to remove this program.
I hope someone can help me pointing to a good alternetive app ! I also couldn't find an application like a SMS counter. Any idea's ?
Thanks for your help and kind regards,
R.
I NEVER leave GPRS connected. I always 're-connect and cancel' to drop my connection after getting email headers ....
However....
one day, in one session at 12noon I racked up £17 with 02. They can not explain it and I was sitting at my desk at work with the XDA docked at the time!!! (with internet pass through if needed!)
This is worse than premium rate calls (which are closely monitored) ... all 02 can say is that at 12noon I downloaded over 7mb !! end of story! no more details. I don't know how it is possible unless it connected to their stupid movie portal and downloaded a massive trailer on it's own? - which I would of noticed!
Well I have a complaint in with them. Just think how many people could get stung (and I know what i'm doing!)
I'm now going to try the above mentioned GPRS counter, but has anyone tried this one ? .... http://www.all-locations.com/ GPRS Traffic Counter v3.2

Do you have a programme such as SPB Pocket Weather.. or any of those 'weather related' today pluggins?... as they connect via GPRS to download latest weather etc..
Hope you find the mischievous programme!

HTC Touch Home Screen's Weather Update

Did anyone ever figure out how to get this page to update Via GPRS? Mine will only update from an AS Connection or if I happen to have WiFi on at the time. But, if I am connected using GPRS then it fails to recognize internet connectivity. (Yes, I do have wap.voicestream.com available and I am paying for the basic service).
Thanks in advance for any information you provide.
The reason could be that your GPRS connection is set through a proxy server.
I have the same problem with my GPRS.
Only if you can set the proxy address in your programs or can patch the program to except a proxy address you will be successful.
There is no other way to bypass a providers fixed proxy as far as I'm informed.

Actually, Come to think of it, I wouldn't think it would present a problem; The Weather plug-in is part of the HTC Touch - which presumably is built to use either GPRS or whatever available at the time. Thus it should work just the same on any similar unit.
Yes you are right, but some a provider offer a few different data subscriptions.
So with certain GPRS supscriptions you have only access certain ports which are defined be the provider.
I for example have a WAP & Email flatrate supscription, which allows me to surf wap pages and receive push mail.
Without simple modifications I would not be able to also surf on http sites.
If I would use a different GPRS option from my provider I would be able to surf with no porblems or use any kind of programs accessing the web.
I once had Spb Weather installed on my XDA and was only able to use my GPRS flat with it if I had a patched .exe of Spb Weather installed so it could pass the restricted O2 proxy.
I hope you get my point.
To simplify it, if you are able to use the Live Messenger on your xda with GPRS then you should also be able to update the Touch weather plugin.
BTW - SPB mobile shell wont waste such a great space on todayscreen - which for me is important for appointments and there are no problems with weather etc.
And looks nice.
And the now screen - i´m searching
You can find more infos here: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/screenshots.html?de
And in black with digital clock it looks nice.
And the menu strukture is perfekt for onehanded using.

there is a reghack:
search for "GPRS" and there msut be a value "enableDIfferGPRSicon" or something like that.
Set it to 1 and it will change from "G" = when GPRS (little slow) or "E" = EDGE (faster) is available.
lol
thats dont work for me and i am getting really pissed with the weather thingy ...it took me 2 full days to upgrade my herald to wm6 pdaviet and now the weather dont working??thats crap guys,..:/
Anyway does anyon know how can i remove the weather tab from the today screen or to replace it with something else?

Thank you.
You can get the weather working. what seems to be the problem?
The problem is the weather updates only via WiFi. The weather does not update via GPRS/EDGE.

Finally found a fix for this. Use the Touch cab or just the HTC Home DLL from this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319187
Mine works fine now.

HTC Home Weather + o2 surf+email-flat
Hi,
anybody managed to get HTC Home Weather-Plugin to update via o2 surf+email-pack?
I can't get the weather update working with the proxy I have to use...otherwise I'ld have to pay for the traffic.
plz help!
Anyone know offhand how to get the weather to display in Fahrenheit and not Celsius? Thanks!
Edit: Nevermind, I found it. On the City Select screen, there's a menu button with Options.
Weather panel 5 days forecast
after i installed the HTC Home plugin, the "Download weather automatically" was enabled since then. I'm wondering why the weather panel, displays only the forecast of the last update even 2days already past. It will display the current weather forecast ONLY when you CONNECT or get update through the internet. The succeeding forecast will not display until you updated. It seems the 5 days forecast is not working properly.
i noticed that after i installed the plugin, the HTC home folder was not in the /Windows folder. is this normal? do i need to copy some files into my /windows folder?
Is there any way that the weather forecast will display the succeeding forecast without updating it to the internet since there are 5 days of forecast?

Wizard using Wifi

Hey,
I have a G4 Wizard, Model Wiza100(With a Camera). I'm using a generic MDA Windows Mobile v6 rom. I recently bought this phone off a friend, mine broke and I didn't want to pay 100s for a rather crappy go phone. I do not have the Data Plan for AT&T and was wondering if there was a way to configure my wizard to NEVER automatically connect to the internet. I'd also like to find a way to have it be able to browse while connected to wifi. Thanks guys, -Strife
Bumb. Any help guys?
Go into start, settings, connections, tap manage existing connections, general tab and tap delete settings. I think this should remove internet connections settings and you wont be able to connect.
Your phone shouldn't connect to gprs anyway unless you open your web browser or other app (like weather program) without being connected to wifi
Sweet, thanks man. I never really need to use the internet on my phone, I was just skeptical of downloading weather addons and such because I didn't want it to access the internet. Also, everytime I let someone use my phone they end up opening internet explorer anyways. I guess we will see the bill at the end of the month, but this should stop it. Thanks again.

Then download apps that let YOU decide when things get updated.
Also, you could try using NoData from MoDaCo (free registration on site required to see/download attachments). Pay attention to their warnings, though: you must have GPRS settings installed for it to work
It'll basically render GPRS inoperable unless you absolutely NEED it, then you just run NoData again, and enable GPRS, and Bob's your mother's sister's husband.
Sweet, thanks for the heads up. Seems like I had No Data on my phone from the MDA Rom. Alright cool, well now I know how to use No Data. Thanks again!

My TD2 is going online (EDGE or HSDPA) by itself!

I have the following problem: my HTC Touch Diamond 2 (from T-Mobile) is going online and stays online for hours until I notice and disconnect.
I can't be sure, but it's possible that Mobile Shell is the reason, because I don't have any other running applications. Is this maybe a built-in feature of TD2?
Is this a known issue? Any hints or tips? (ActiveSync and GMail are set to synchronize manually).
yes look in the Options of mobile shell
its the weather Programm that uses these autoConnects all the time
ive had the same "problem" as well...
if u have SPB Traveler too, then uve to look in every single programm option
SPB Traveler options
SPB MObile Shell options
SPB weather options
take out the automaticly updates...
fixed =D
I've checked Windows Update and Weather Update. Both are off.
I've found that I have a suspicious widgetmanager.exe running on my PDA. Is this coming from Opera? I'll kill it and see if it helps.
Maybe it's the (totally useless) PushInternet service of Opera.
Here's how you can stop it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532948&highlight=stop+pushinternet
But the problem is that sometimes you want to browse some saved pages.
There are some saved pages that still require connection to update something.
And the phone goes on-line automatically WITHOUT asking the user. This annoys me a lot, since I have a fixed traffic amount and I don't want to spend it unawares.
I solved this issue by modifying a letter in my default connection.
This way, when the phone tries to go on-line automatically I get an error message saying it cannot connect. Now, depending on my needs, I either dismiss the message to stay off-line or fix that modified letter to go on-line.
To modify your default connection:
Settings tab, All settings, Connections tab, Connections, Manage existing connections, Click your default connection, Edit, Next, (here change the "Access point name" -- my last letters are .ro and I delete the "o"), Next and then Finish.
Maybe this solution is a bit rough but it works for me and I'm happy .
What's the problem? I have always a data connection open on my phone, 24 hours a day. You only pay for the amount of data, not for staying online.
I was referring to traffic.
The phone transfers data without asking my permission.
> You only pay for the amount of data, not for staying online.
The phone is connecting to the Internet automatically upon necessity. The fact that the connection is open means that some program or service had the necessity and transferred the data (at least one byte, but likely more). So the traffic is not zero in this case.
Another reason is that I pay 7EUR per every day that I connect to the Internet + the traffic price.
And reason #3 is that I want to know and control what my phone is doing and not otherwise.
I'm still observing the situation, this widgetmanager.exe is likely the source of the problem, but can't confirm it 100% yet.
Try SPB Wireless Monitor, then you can see whats connected, amount of traffic etc.
No need of buying, just use the trial for 15 days
Thanks for the tip. I have used it. That's how I know about widgetmanager.exe downloading something. I keep it killed and wait for the problem to reappear. After 24 hours I'll know if it's widgetmanager.exe or not.
I like your solution and I am going to give that a try. Thank you.
widgetmanager.exe was the reason. It comes with T-Online ROM. Thank you everybody for your help. Issue closed.

Device connects ramdomly to the internet (Manila 2.5?)

Hello,
I have the problem that my Topaz with Manila 2.5 (Sense) connects to the internet without any reason wich i can see. I have no automatic update functions runnning, but suddenly my Device connects via HSDPA.
Another Problem is, that everytime I go to the Twitter Tab (or rotate the phone in album tab), the Phone connects to HSDPA, too.
How can I disable this? I dont want to disable HSDPA in general - but I have a time-based contract...
Does anybody hasa solution for this?
the twitter tab would be the usual suspect
Either twitter, weather, push internet, push email, or email fetching..
You can use a program called Modaco No Data to disable your internet connection and enable it when you want to.
I have an other ROM now, which does not have this behavior. (But can´t find the reason for that)
For the people who have the same problems as i had: you can delete the password from you IPS-internet-connection - so the device will ask you for the password each time it tries to connect.
I would like to have a solution too, I don't have "DATA tarif" actually and this is a problem for me. I don't won't to cancel data connection because MMS or actualising of Weather (once a day)...
if u guys get a rom with the new leo dump, the data connection is fix there
