Hi all,
The audio on my Jam (predominantly the output from the built-in speaker) was driving me a little nuts. I was getting stuttering and clicks in programs (games), in movies (WMV) and using the phone. Also, there was a lot of stutter in the notifications for incoming calls and SMS.
In attempting to resolve this, I noticed that GB-SOFT Tweak (http://www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/products.htm) had an
interesting setting "Higher priority for audio media". I turned on this setting, soft reset, and Wham! sounds are as
smooth as butter globally. I haven't had any noticeable negative side effects, just better sounds.
I looked into what the GB-SOFT utility is doing, and it seems to just be setting one registry value:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\BuiltIn\WaveDev\Priority256
from it's default
0x100 (256) to
0x80 (128)
This apparently gives the built-in sound processing DLL (WaveDev) a higher thread priority and eliminates the skipping sound.
Can some of you guys try this out (either via the GB-SOFT utility, or manually in the registry), and confirm your results?
This got rid of one of the most annoying problems for me with my Jam (A great device).
YMMMV
I've just changed it to 80 and i'm going to do some tests tonight. I'll post again with the results...
Well, i've tested it and i found that while it does a lot of improvement on the sounds played from the back speaker (media player, ringtones etc.), it doesn't improve at all the audio quality from the front speaker. (I called a couple of friends...but it was still the same, robot, voice quality)
For the tests i went up to 500 (terrible audio, full of clicks and tsiks) and down to 20...
I'll continue the tests.... :?
Hi,
Good thing ! Thanks for the test
On my MDA Compact, the Priority256 key has the DWord value 110 (0X00006E). So I have no idea how to change the setting to 0X80 (128). Anyone know how to do this? I am interested in testing the results.
Using a registre editor like regedit I think.
I am using PHM regedit, that's how I found the settings I posted. But no idea what to put into that setting to change it to the settings posted in thsi thread. I will use the GB prog instead and see what it does.
Koksie I have the same problem with Resco explorer registry plug-in... Will try the regedit at home...

Primoz

Koksi, if that is your default, then you actually have an ever higher priority set by default then GB-SOFT Tweak sets.
Hmm, I'm wondering if some other software (Or GB-SOFT Tweak itself) else lowered my priority to 0x100 (256) causing my problems in the first place.
GB-SOFT Tweak definitely sets the value to 0x80 (128) when you turn the option on, and resets it back to 0x100 (256) when you turn it off.
Can anyone else quickly check the value of this registry setting without using GB-SOFT Tweak?
Same here. The default was 110....
my default was 256 and I know I've had terrible clicking sound when I tried to install a couple of games.
I have the same settings as Koskie. 0x6E (110) The sound from my rear speaker is ok so far no problems when playing mp3s and during alerts. So I guess I will not apply this tweak for the meantime.
my default was 100....i didnt notice any difference..(qtek s100)
My default value is 0x6E (110) - haven't tried the tweak yet.

Andrew, if you set it to 110 you will have much better sound.
Everyone else, if you're already below 128, you're fine. Somehow a couple of devices (Andrrew, mine) got off the imate factory default (which seems to be 110) causing really bad sound.
Of course if you want some fun, you can manually set it to 256 and soft-reset to see how bad it is, then set it back ;-)
Hi everybody,
a lot of you on this thread seem to know quite a bit about registry settings and routine priorities. Could you please take a look at the problem in this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=99678#99678
Thanks!
My report:
Mine is 110 (factory default).
Set to 80, and found the sound is less clicking when hearing from the phone (talk like normal handphone, not from the speaker phone at bottom).
For sound like from Windows Media Player 10, or phone ringtones (midi), looks like the sound is a bit soft than before, but clearer.
I keep on 80.
Best regards,
Arto
hi have to report something weird! anyway a few posts up I said my default was 128... however I noticed that my mp3s seem to be playing out of sync or choppy and the quality was worse than before my ROM upgrade. when I checked the value it was set to 256. I'm not saying it is the ROM's fault as I have also installed/tried some other apps after the ROM upgrade and maybe these apps were responsible for lowering the audio quality for my JAM (maybe for performance purpose) anyway I've set it back to 128 and the sound is better. Maybe for people just about to do the ROM upgrade can check the before and after value so we know if it is the ROM doing the changing or just some apps.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR A GREAT THREAD!
After posting this same question here (BA Forum) and at howard forums I finally found this thread. I had the bad clicking/skipping during mp3 in WMP and during wav playback in the voice in GPS nav. My setting was 128 but I already installed the GB-Soft tweak. I still had the poor performance. I adjusted down to 110 and all problems seem to be gone. It definitely was some devious app that made a change because my device did not do this for a long time then it suddenly began. BTW, I have a pda2k not Jam. Anyway, thanks so much to all for a solution this was driving me nuts.
Thanks for the HACK !!
My device had the default value of 110, changed to 80. There's a definite improvement in the audio quality.
Thanks again.
hi all,
I'm struggling with a few things and can't seem to find a solution on the forum, mayb some of you know the answers?
1. Echo in Nokia Bluetooth Carkit (Ck-7w)... Thought bluetooth would be universal, so why does this carkit not work properly with Qtek... any known solutions?
2. Is there a way to set one of the hard button as the "Start-button"?
3. I've read a lot about registry hacks, can somebody tell me where to actually edit this registry.... I don't know where to find it, or edit it...
Many thanks to all...
Maarten
Is your microphone and speaker more than 1 meter seperated?
I use the CK1W and have no echo at all.
For the registry you can you Resco File Explorer 2005 it comes with a registry editor.
Good luck!
Okay okay...I know there are already a few CAB files with performance tweaks, but I made one (my 1st CAB file ) with the settings I like!
You can download 2 versions, one for Dutch users (like me) and one for WWE users.
I have 2 different versions because of a Today Item tweak with the Calendar and on Dutch Roms this is called Agenda.
I know that most of the settings here are also in apps like Registry Wizard, but this CAB files executes way faster then installing and configuring Registry Wizard
A little note: You can uninstall the program, but the settings will stay in the Registry so you have to change them manually!
Regards,
Molski
UPDATE (04-08-2006):
I updated the file to file into one file for Dutch and WWE users, I almost forgot about this file so I still didn't mention what all the registry changes are doing, but like Dr. Puttingham said....in the Wiki you can find everything back!
This file also consumes about +/- 1-2 MegaByte from your RAM Memory, but hey...what do you like more...More RAM or More Speed?
p.s. Here you can see which Registry Settings are applied in the CAB files:

Thanks molski, could you include a list of what all the reg tweaks do, for those not so techie, either in a post or txt or doc format, cheers.
I will....when I have some more time, I barely had the time to make this CAB file for myself
Nice going. My files are downloaded 14 times already, so I guess people find my files useful?
If so, please let me know, I will see what more I can create or adjust
I had a huge load of support with my questions on this forum, so it's nice to finally do something back for the community

I dont know if it works on a S200, it is created for a Wizard, so I can only say try it and see if you notice any difference in performance

any chance you can explain what exactly the tweaks do?
Hi, is there a guide how to make a cab file that automatically installs registry tweaks? I'd like to make my own custom one, so after a hard reset I don't have to do the tedious tweaking...
Could someone explain how to make one of these CAB files for registry changes? I have searched high and low for the answer.
I did something similar for my 8125. Since I have a tendency to frequently hard reset it, I did a registry file with a bunch of the normal hacks I do, as well as setting up MMS and such. Works like a charm, although I use Resco Explorer with the registry option to do it. I haven't made a CAB file yet.
Saves loads of time after a hard reset.
How might one make this registry file? I'd really like to know.
What do the tweaks do.. .please
Can you tell us what these tweaks do?
@wiredup If you read the WIKI you'll get a lot of knowledge regarding the reg settings. These WM5 changes have been documented countless times here and also on the BA WM5 forum and other places I'm sure.
You can do some googling for more knowledge if you so desire.
molski incorporated these into a very nice cab file that is one of the very first things that I install on all of my devices. His is the most complete so far regarding speed improvements IMO
(Just one of his many contributions)
Thanks again molski!

Tweaks...
You're tweaks seem good so far... Would be nice if you could put what each one does... I am familiar with most thou. I like my GPRS/EDGE Icon to be different, so I went back and changed that. Also are skinny scroll bars actually providing better performance?
I'm gonna try this out for awhile with OMAPSCALER set at 228 (I had it at 240 with random shutdowns before, but I dont think it was overheating) and see how my performance is.
Also there are programs out there that will create CABs that change registry values... i.e. "WinCE CAB Manager"
Jess
I have been looking around for info on this. Yes, I searched and went through a dozen pages..so nil... I don't own a Snap / Ozone, but I know someone who does. According to him, the volume on it , particularly the ringer volume, is not that loud, even after doing the registry edit to change the value in sound categories / control panel. Is there an edited audiopara file that will work on a Snap or Ozone? Or is there anyone out there that knows Exactly which lines to edit in the audiopara3 file?
And no, I heard the TP and TD audiopara tweaks dont work on this device.
Thanks in advance
I was able to get the ringer and the earpiece louder on the Ozone. I had to because I'm hearing impaired. I'm no expert at this stuff and I take no credit for the work. What I did first was modified some settings in the registry which helped a little. Then I made some changes to the AudioPara3 file. Basiclly, it was trial and error from AudioPara3 files from other phones on this forum. It works great for me. I have attached the two files.
Also, if someone can modify this file to get the Motorola H710 headset working without random disconnects from the phone(even though the call is still active) I'd appreciate it. Let me know how this works.
Rick
I posted the wrong AudioPara3 file. Here is the correct one.
May I ask what is Audiopara?
There is a file called AudioPara3 in the Windows directory. If you copy it over to a PC, you'll see it's an excel spreadsheet with values controlling many aspects of the phone. I wouldn't edit the file in excel just view. The best way to edit is in notepad. Hope this helps
Does Audiopara boost the volume without a drop in sound quality?
Hi, all. Last night I came across a couple of reg setting's that added an extra option when making a phone call.
Here is the main key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\PHONE\EnableICR
Change value from 0 to 1.
Also change to the following:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Voice]
"AllowInCallRecording"=dword:00000001
"EnableCallRecodMenuItem"=dword:00000001
Reboot phone.
Then make a Phone call then press right softkey (Menu) and Record appears as an option. Press it and the phone plays a sound (indicating beginning of recording) and phone returns to normal in call screen. When call is hung up or you press stop recording in the menu. Another sound plays. Go to notes under My Documents on Phone and there is a time and date stamped audio file.
I have not fully gone there with this yet as I'm at work (long weekend/ 8am sat till 6pm Mon) But will let you know of any progress as and if I get any.
Bye for now.
Phil
Note
Sorry for basic path error, I'm working right now and am just popping in from time to time. Sorry once again.
Diigibio,
I believe the other registry keys to be modified may be the following:
[HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\WaveDev]
"VocRecPath"=dword:00000002
[HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL]
"RingingAdressId"=dword:00000000
[HKLM\System\AudioRecording]
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Voice]
"AllowInCallRecording"=dword:00000001
"EnableCallRecodMenuItem"=dword:00000001
Nonetheless, despite these modifications, it appears that the recording is not totally perfect with some software, such as Vito Audio Notes Touch (the voice of the callee is too low)
...
Thanks for posting this. Needs to get added to the hints and tips sticky.
The key is actually at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\PHONE\EnableICR on my HD2
Cheers,
tried it on a German stock 1.43 ROM, RECORD option does not appear in the menu even after soft reset.
And BTW, the correct path would be:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\PHONE\EnableICR
Best regards
GZ
Graf,
Try this cab.:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=493118
It works on my HD2.
Also it only appears in the menu once a call had been started. This id built in to rom without external programlike vito or Resco recorders. When I'm able to get my laptop out, I'll post a screenie.

I installed "2_Way_Plus_InCall_Recording cab" and it still didn't work on mine. It only records the incoming voice. Should i have tried "2_Way_Recording" cab instead ?
I tried ACR, Resco, Vito. Always the same bug :\
I've got the official ROM.

Did you also make the changes in the registry as mentioned above?
Normally during a phone call you can go into the menu and check 'recording'.

No i haven't, but i will. Can you confirm me i took the right CAB ? There are two.
Do these reg tweaks apply onlu for the built-in Windows Mobile recording option ? I'm looking for one which does the job automaticaly (not the case of this one apparently). So i wish to use Resco.
I remember this reg tweak back with the Blackstone. I tried it on the HD2 but the sound quality is very low and poor. Is there anything else that can be done to improve it? Once all is good I will add to hints and tips thread.

tboy, thanks.
That would be very helpful.
The above registry tweaks do work, and phone conversations can be recorded. The only thing we shall improve is the low sound quality.
There must be a registry for the volume level too.
So. . .
I have done this tweak on my device,
with all the additional info and Reg Changes also.
The recording of my voice is crisp and clear, while the recording of the other person is very weak (low volume) and noisy.
I think I read on another thread that someone else encountered a similar problem.
So my question is - is there anything else I should do to improve the recording quality of the other person ?
Is there anyone else still having the same problem ?
Thanks.
I too have done the various reg edits and although it seems to work (there is a record option when making a call, a sound plays and a file is generated) the output file doesn't contain either outgoing or incoming sound!
I had to create the key "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Voice" since it didn't exist, I wonder if this has any bearing on the matter?
I also initiated recording before I was connected to the other end, maybe that's my problem.
I will try only activating record once I'm connected and I will also give that cab a whirl, and report back
il be keeping an eye on this one,
Let us know if it works, and on both sides !
Cheers.

Any news about that?
Steps I took
Hey all,
I though I'd give this a shot. I changed the Main key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\PHONE\EnableICR from 0 to 1.
However I didn't have the folder/key: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Voice So I created it!
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Voice
"AllowInCallRecording"=dword:00000001
"EnableCallRecodMenuItem"=dword:00000001
It all seems to work, the menu option appears and I get the sound when recording starts, however it's very quiet.
One way around this is to put the phone on load speak. Then the recording is clear.
Hope this helps.

Does it work if you only edit EnableICR 0 to 1 or do you have to create Voice folder and these 2 reg keys, for which we are not sure if are working because we dont alerady have them originally?
