Just out of curiosity, how many of you sync with exchange and what kind of problems do you have? Im running a small business server with a pretty decent connection (~6 mbit/s) and my push email is still delayed by sometime up to 30 minutes. At this point I might as well just have it polling every 30 minutes and possibly save some battery power. Otherwise it syncs perfectly with the occasional failure to update read status on email. Are any of you experiencing anything similar?
I run a similar setup with no delays whatsoever. Infact often my ppc gets the email a few seconds before the desktop client...
I have about 30 users syncing with exchange server through activesync. Push seems to work well for the most part, it does seem to be a pretty big drain on battery life though. If you are having problems with it make sure that the connection timeout on your firewall, if you have one, is longer then the heartbeat interval in exchange otherwise the connection will drop and exchange will have to wait till the phone reconnects to deliver the mail.

If you have dsl you might want to check what your upload speed is and how much inet traffic u are using I am running a t1 with 2 exchange servers both running '07 as well as have 2 computers browsing the web and downloading files at all times and run into 0 delays. If you need for testing purposes I can set u up on a test account to verify the issue is your server and not your device.
Chances are its your load on your net though.

Yeah I would definately like to get this straightened out. I'm running a SBS behind a Linksys wrt54g with the DD-WRT firmware and have my timeout set for 3600 seconds (or 60 minutes) any help would be appreciated.
Ok couple of questions guys:
1. Are you installing a certificate on the device or unchecking SSL?
2. Anyone running on T-Mobile with the proxy or are all these devices on 3G/straight internet?

I spent some time yesterday trying to find an answer to my continuous problems connecting with Blackberry Connect. This included different ROMS and different versions of Blackberry and Desktop Connect software.
My problem (like many others) is that the initial set-up of Blackberry connect seems to work but as soon as I restart the device or service, it is disconnected and sometimes the service completely shuts with the blackberry icon dissappearing from the tray.
The best success I had (and is still working after 24hrs) is to install Blackberry service without wireless calandar support. Somehow for all versions of ROMS and connect software, enabling wireless calander is causing the disconnects. I can't remember what the service name for this is but for those with similar problems this might help.
On a similar note, does anyone know why wireless calander could be bringing down the blackberry service?

I had a similar problem with the BB connect (2.1.2.16) client on my Wizard. BB connect works fine without calendar sync. I had similar stability issues when I used the old BB connect client (1.x) when my mailbox got too large, and I have a HUGE amount of calendar information thus I am guessing it is size that is causing the issue. It does not help that the BB connect calendar sync doesn't specify a cutoff date to reduce the number of old entries.
I am running BB Connect 2.1.2.16 on my 1605 and have constant issues with the BB client.
I get the odd VCAL error occuring but these are rare compared to the BB Client just switching itself off on a regular basis. Restarting the client does not fix the issue and I have to softreset the device. The device is generally slow and unstable after a long period of running the BB Connect client constantly.
I send and receive about 200 mails a day and keep a weeks worth of mail in my Blackberry mailbox so yes perhaps this is size related.
However I have a collegue in Austria who is using the T-Mobile version of the Hermes, and a slightly earlier version of BB Connect (2.1.2.15 I think) and it seems to be a lot more stable.
Any clues ??

I run 2.1.2.16 on a Wizard and without PIM, it works reasonably well. The most I've kept in the BB inbox is around 400 mail as that was around when the BB 1.x client used to play up an I got used to deleting the mail from BB (I do not sync deletes with my Inbox for this reason). If you are keeping 1000 mail I would say try and delete the mail daily (including deleting from the "Deleted" folder) and see if it improves. I know that with the BB 1.x client, if I got too many mail the BB client would start chewing up CPU and the device would act strange, and sometimes I needed to soft reset, disable BB, delete the mail, reset again and things would be good again.
What baffles me is why people keep so many emails on their BB's I read a message, if it requires an immediate response I send a note from the BB and then maybe follow up later on the PC, I then delete the message, if its not relevant I read and delete it, if it can be dealt with later, I read it, then mark it as unread and then delete it from the BB, I do not sync my mailbox with the BB thus all mail is still in my Outlook inbox...

I think it just depends on how people work. I tend to read on the run (between meetings) and I delete when I remember sometime at home or on the train on the way to work or something like that.

I would like to have Microsoft Push mail activated on my phone however I ve noticed that if I do, it keeps me connected to the internet throughout the entire day... now I am on data flat so I m not worried about costs however, I figured that being constantly online drains the battery pretty much ..
so .. is there a way of dealing with problem? can I have the phone check for emails and automatically disconnect after it has done so?

I'm just an amateur and I certainly cannot pretend to know everything, but it seems to me that what you're asking for isn't really what Push is about.
You might be better off simply configuring the default mail programme to check for mail at short intervals.
You can set when to pull email from your ActiveSync Menu. This way it only connects to ActiveSync over the air when you specify.
as they said, just go to activesync ->menu-> schedule change to every hour or whatever
pushmail (as items arrive) requires an active connection between the phone and the mail server so gprs must be connected all the time
If you pull every 15 minutes you'll probably end up using more battery (connecting, checking, disconnecting).
My phone is always connect to GPRS/HSDPA and I've not had any real issue with the battery life.

My data connection is better when left on. I found a heavy use of battery, in the early days, when i used to have it connect when it needed.
If you are on a flat data plan, i advise leave it on.
I've set up my Gmail account using activesync (as item arrives) and all is well. However, I performed a few tests (sending emails to myself from other accounts) and noticed that the emails don't actually get to my phone immediately. They arrive immediately on the mail client on my PC but arrive about 10 minutes later on my HD2. Is this normal? If not, does the auto disconnect registry tweak I performed have anything to do with it. I'm guessing for mail to reach my phone as they arrive, some sort of constant connection is required with the google server. So does the auto disconnect tweak disrupt this connection? Also, is this constant connection drain the battery significantly quicker. I don't mind sacrificing a small amount of battery life for the push email feature, but if we're talking big drains then I might have to reconsider the sync frequencies.
OK, emails have started arriving exactly the same time on my phone as my PC mail client now. I'm guessing the auto disconnect doesn't affect anything then. It would be nice to know if its draining my battery quicker though when set to sync as item arrives.

I was experimenting today and found the same issue. I'm not convinced that google sync works correctly just yet given that it is in beta.

Autosync with gmail seems to be unstable. I usually get mail on my phone instantly, but sometimes it can take up to 15 minutes. It would probably be better to set the phone to check mail every fifth minute or so, but what about the battery?
Does the auto disconnect affect weather, twitter or facebook updates btw?
Genuine 'Push' email can't work if autodisconnect is enabled (and actually working!)
The message that a new item is available is 'pushed' to the device from the server, which requires an open data connection.
If the data connection is closed, the 'new item available' flags won't be received until either the next scheduled poll, or the next push 'heartbeat' connection from the device which reopens the data connection.

Weather will be OK as it polls the server on a regular basis which reopens the data connection. I'm not sure about Twitter or FB- maybe having the programs open maintains the data connection?

Everything works fine for now (push wise) but as NeilM mentioned, I don't think its compatible with autodisconnect. In notifications, it shows that the connection (T-mobile internet in my case) is still active. And when I hold the call end button and 'Terminate Data Connection' the connection is re-established again immediately.
To disable this constant connection, I've set it to download every 30 mins peak, and 60 mins off peak -
I've never used push email before but I'm guessing it creates a constant connection between the phone and the server.

Thats correct- the phone sends a 'heartbeat' signal every so often (depending on the Exchange server settings, but usually every 15 minutes) just to refresh it's current IP address setting on the server. In practice, the IP address will rarely change as long as the data connection is maintained.
In this way, the server always knows where to send items as they arrive, and the action of sending resets the 'heartbeat' counter. Likewise any item sent from the phone resets the 'heartbeat'
The data involved in the heartbeat process is around 4MB per month, which is similar to the amount used in the handshaking when polling at 30 minute intervals.
If you have auto-disconnect active, then the server won't be able to send new items, so they will only get sent when a new connection is established by the heartbeat process, or when a connection is forced by a send/receive operation.

Well, on my device, the auto disconnect never worked.
I set the values
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\CacheTime=60
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\VPNCacheTime=60
and set SuspendResume=""
And all the auto-updates are off (weather, stocks, etc)
and still - once I start a connection (Mostly if I do it for waether update, but sometimes even from SkyFire), it stays on, until I turn it off from the settings.
(Is there anything I missed in the settings to enable auto disconnect ?)

Everything works fine when connected to my laptop via USB or when connected to WiFi (whether at my office or at any remote site unrelated to my local LAN). However, once I am using my data connection I experience the following issue which I have narrowed down through lots of trail and error:
When an email of approx 4k and above arrives I can see ActiveSync trying to sync and it then fails with an error code of 0x80830002. ActiveSync will then never reestablish a connection unless I either remove the particular email from my Outlook inbox, or, I connect to any WiFi connection.
If I set the download limit to 1k, it never fails and I simply receive a trunkated version of the email. However, if I select to download the remained of the text it fails again.
The issue is related to the size of the text within the email as attachements can be downloaded fine.
I have been on to T-Mobile as this feels like a carrier problem as I only experience it when using mobile data connection but they haven't come up with anything.
I'd really appreciate any help you can offer as this is driving me mad!!!!!

Is your Exchange ActiveSync running over SSL?
Not at the moment. I'm just trying to get it going at the moment. I just don't understand how it can work in all situations appart from when on mobile data?

If you're not using SSL then it's possible that it could have something to do with T-Mobile, but I don't know enough about them to say.
Does T-Mobile use a proxy for HTTP?
Do you know if they have a policy relating to syncing your phone(s) with Exchange?

I seem to be having similar problems
Which all started in Mid April. I too am on T-Mobile.....
Though e-mails in excess of 4k have been syncing when OTA is actually working. I hope an expert out there has an idea of what may be wrong!

I should have posted my solution back here.
I thought (mistakenly) that my SBS2003 box was running service pack 2. It wasn't.
Went to the Microsoft updates website, allowed it to download and install and hey presto!!!
Also, I have noticed that on occasion, for example if the SBS loses its internet connection, that ActiveSync does not reestablish. Simply terminating it in WM task manager causes it to restart and then its fine.

Terminating Activesync in the Task Manager on the phone doesn't help either. The only way to "restart" OTA syncing is to do a USB laptop sync. With SSL it falls down eventually with "Waiting for Network". Without SSL it lasts longer before falling down with error 0x80830002.
I do still wonder if it's related to us changing ISP for head office, but then surely the iPhone or WM6.1 device would also fail?
