Hi all,
I'm a new PPC user and I love the customization and features that the phone offers, but I have one major gripe right now that's making me debate keeping the phone. I'm working with a XV6800 and I'm a frequent texter and the slowdown due to what I'm sure are a variety of things is really bothering me.
When I soft-reset the phone, everything is quite speedy, but over the course of the day, my memory starts to "leak" and everything slows down. It'll sometimes take my phone 3 to 5 second to switch from vertical to horizontal when I open the keyboard, another few seconds to open and look at the message, and then once I start typing, the letters drag behind at a speed much slower than the one I'm typing at.
My question is, will going with a stable ROM such as DCD's or Custel's when he releases one and keeping the number of applications I install and run to a minimum solve this completely? I'm experiencing this even after a few hours use with no other programs running, so I don't think that's the way a phone should operate "smoothly." Or am I completely wrong, is this just something I have to get used to and accept? If that's the case, I may be considering the wrong phone.
In addition, what about threaded SMS? Will that have any effect on this text messaging delay?
In summary, I'm looking to get rid of the delay in all of my apps and across the whole phone, not just in texting, but that's the best and most notable example I have. Any advice on speeding it up would be appreciated for these specific issues, but before I run out of time, I want to make sure this is a solveable issue.
Finally, on a separate note, is there any downside to doing several soft-resets a day if necessary? Eventually over the next week or so I want to tweak it to not have to do this, but for now, is that ok?
Thanks!

Yes
i was ready to throw the phone out the car window until i installed dcd's rom. it is faster and the phone is just better now. now i love my phone.

best thing for a speed is to get rid of the stock rom with custel or dcd's rom has higher pagepool and other tweaks. dcd's is very polished.
the phone is garbage with the stock rom. the memory leak is still an issue and is a "feature" built into windows mobile. i use oxios hibernate to release the memory though out the day. soft resets used to be twice a day with the stock rom, now it is once a week if that.

no downside other than you shouldnt have to do it. the stock rom is just garbage for even making you have to do it.
where do i find the other roms? sorry im new and don't have a whole lot of time at work to search.
So I put the new rom on my mogul. Love the gps. Love the task manager. However, I've run into a few problems that I would like to see if anyone else has encountered:
When i open an sms..it shows me the bottom of the screen..and not the message. not a deal breaker, but annoying.
i had just installed the rom. nothing on it... didn't even put my sd card in. soft reseted around five time to make sure... but when doing ABSO-FRICKING-LUTELY NOTHING the 68-78% of my program memory is occupied. wtf.
you too?
Right now, I have many many ways of turning on the GPS from standby.
So this is my fun part right now.
I got GPSGate, Google Map and AstroGPSLauncher to launch the GPS.
iGuidance 4 need alot of help to get going. iNAV need to work on this fast.
Other than that, it has been OK. I like the upload speed. It make my Remote Desktop more lively OK.
I think life is OK. This is something new on the Mogul, so I can understand it. It can only gets better.

SMS scrolling to the bottom upon opening a message is a known side-effect of the registry edit that changes the 4-way navigation button to scroll instead of tab to the next link on a page. HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Navigation\4-Way Nav; 0 will scroll (and open SMS messages at the bottom), 1 will tab
I am running the OEM 3.35 ROM, with all of the Sprint customizations, and on a fresh soft reset I have 22.56MB free memory. After a day of calls, text messages, and web surfing, I usually have 16 to 18MB free. Are you running the stock ROM or a custom ROM? Have you done any registry edits that would affect the free memory, such as changing cache sizes? Also, did you do an extra hard reset after flashing the ROM?
I am having none of the problems you are describing. Where is the option on the poll for "Yes, because these problems don't exist for the rest of us"?

I agree...new ROM great behavior...this is by far the best that Sprint has done thus far for the Titan, even stock it runs great. I just installed SPB and my memory stays at or near 18-20 and battery never dies on me.
"Yes, because these problems don't exist for me"
i updated wednesday and i use codyppc threaded sms so i dont know about the text prob. but i dont experience any different mem loss than Mario but i dont like that they integrated the tm into the rom cuz i didnt use that either but thats my only issue
well bah. i guess i get the "i just suck" title. i have a severe love hate relationship with this phone,. heh.
Well after 5 days of having this phone, it seems to have got very slow...
Going into messages and then opening the keyboard, the screen can just sometimes freeze.
When typing a message there is a good second lag from when I type it to it appearing on screen.
Also, ive noticed that pictures I take with the phone seem to be very pixelated on the phone.
Ive had 2 taskbars at once from opening and closing the keyboard.
Just in general the phones seems to going extremly slow. Panels take ages to open up when the panel button is pressed and take a good 3-5secs to load.
It seems like this phone/OS has a stupid amount of bugs that need to be sorted asap.
Anyone else got these problems?
guess it's a matter of expectations
or you experience issues I don't
I'm in no hurry to update to a newer rom myself
well it was fairly quick and i was impressed at first.
but now this has just turned into the slowest and buggiest phone ive had
do you exit programs or do you just put them in the background?

Disable threaded SMS view, it *should* get rid of the lag you speak about.
Have you tried a soft reset? Leaving the phone running non stop for 5 days will slow it down.

yep done. still seems slow...
is it because of some programs ive installed?
uh is this your first pda? I mean I asked because you said your x1 is slow. may we know its slow compared to what? if it is just slow. then I guess wm6.1 is just slow. Ialso have sim-free one. And have a few pda's from wm2003 to 5, 6 and 6.1 and yep the 6.1 is a bit slow.
Its slow compared to how it was when I got it 5 days ago.
However, i have just uninstalled:
Spore
2 tweak programs
Windows Live Panel
The phone is a lot faster now.
Before I was waiting at least 3-4seconds for messages to loads, the screen to rotate etc...
which tweaks were slowing you down?
yeah which one? might help us make ours faster too.
Have you installed touch flo? that screws up the X1's speed
Ok heres what in uninstalled. This has made the device a lot quicker (well, only as quick as default speed - as it was when the device was first used)
Windows Live Panel
Spore
XperiaTweak 2.0
Some other tweak program, allowed you to change what animations ran etc. Can't remember its name. AdvanceTweak or something
After uninstalling these, it made the device as quick as it was when I first got it.
I haven't got any random roms or anything like that. Everything on the device is official.
No TouchFlo
Standard O2 Rom
Ive editied the registry to remove the O2 Panel but this hasn't made a speed difference.
is it possible that spore run on background, developing it's creature.
I too occasionally get 2 seconds freezes. Could it be some cache setting in Xperia Tweak ? Since I don't understand them much.
You can use task manager (I mean real task manager which show processes, it's in phone:\windows) to check what eats CPU and RAM.
I loaded my X1 full with apps and tweaked a little but it's as fast as after a hard reset
does anybody have a major problem with hero lagging. It is really annoying. I was wondering if rooting the hero can fix this problem. If not do you guys think the 2.1 update will fix it.
What ROM are you running? What apps do you normally have running in the background? Are you using a Task Killer that automatically kills apps on a set time frame? Have you tried doing a factory reset/wipe to see if it makes a difference? And finally, where do you see the lag the most? Is it in a particular application, or are you judging the "lagginess" based on moving back and forth from your home screens in SenseUI?
Answering ALL of these questions will help us understand what you're seeing a little better. Your question is a little vague, and your answers will probably help you get some more support from folks on here.
Thanks!
My phone was laggy too. I rooted it and put the fresh rom on it and I saw a big improvement in overall performance. Still not as fast as my old iphone 3gs, but I would never go back. I also don't use task manager anymore. It always runs in the background and drains your battery faster.
I was having the same issue.. and I narrowed it down to Handcent(SMS) of all things..
phone was fast until I installed it.. then it ran like a dog.... then I uninstalled handcent and speed it actually usable now..
I would like to see confirmation of this from others as well..

Yeah handcent killed me, made the phone not just a dog, but a wounded dog born with 2 legs. 10x worse than the stock hero app, which is bad.
I'm running handcent, but I haven't noticed any specific slowdowns from it. It can take a while to load the main handcent screen when you have lots and lots of texts in there, but I usually clear them out when I get over 100 or so anyway.
Check to see that you have the most recent version of Handcent. I think I read that there was a performance bug related to their special "with Christmas animations" holiday release (that has since been fixed).
Also, remember to clear the boot-cache directory and reboot after upgrading apps ('rm -r /data/boot-cache/*'; reboot). The Hero has problems with caching apps after upgrades (so you aren't actually running the upgrade version). I have no idea if this was fixed in the newer ROMS. I'm running Fresh and still do it, as it only takes a sec (if you have the android-sdk and root set up).
Turning off HandCent popup notifications resulted in a substantial performance increase for me. Which is good, as I really like the features HC adds (such as voice-to-text).
I had the latest version and it was always cleared out sms wise. and I never used popup notifications.. they were annoying.. and I just got a fresh replacement of the Hero (warrantee) and its still on stock rom and Handcent still killed it.. in one day..
i have not rooted, pure stock phone. only app i think runs in background is email and loopt
I notice the lag from everything to sense UI to the clock taking 2-3 secs to update to my contacts scrolling, to text message lag, to calling even lags. like anything and everything can lag.
It all has to do with this bug in Android 1.5:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3453
I'm running AOSP 1.6 on my Hero right now and it is ridiculously fast.
So yes, I think that the 2.1 update (which hopefully will come out soon) is going to fix these issues for us.
on your location settings turn off "network location" then reboot..your lag will be gone...and make sure you have a task manager installed too and end your apps so they take over your processor
Task managers are a waste of time.

This is very true. I was running the 2.1 build from here the last few days (thought I had to revert due to missing some texts and voicemail) and it's much speedier. It uses the HTC keyboard, but it's much faster in its response, almost instantaneous. The location bug really does suck up a lot of CPU time.
Also, maybe its just me, but I think it's important to remember the kind of device we're using, the hardware involved, and what you're asking it to do. It's not like you're walking around with a quad core CPU and 4GB of RAM in your pocket, but it seems a lot of people think it should respond as if that's what it has. It's a phone, yes, and it should be able to do phone stuff quickly if possible, but look at all it can and is doing. If you need absolute speed, get a dumb phone that can't browse the web, play games, or do just about anything. It'll run just fine.
handcent never made my phone lag. The only thing that made my phone lag was HTC's battery widget. Damn thing slowed my phone down so I uninstalled it and phone is running back fast again. I still use task manager because I do notice once to many apps are open it lags. Don't care what anyone says it happens on my phone. I do have a lot of applications on ignore though.
Try disabling Location services.

I used to wholeheartedly disagree with this statement, until I read a kickass article explaining how Android actively manages memory.
Now, I also agree with this statement 100%. I don't even use my paid task manager app anymore. :/
I did something that was common sense troubleshooting but I didn't think of it earlier. I damn near uninstalled every downloaded program I had and even some of my regular apps I use. A program, or combination of programs, was causing the phone to stutter and majorly lag. I'm talking hit the clear key in the notification bar and maybe ten seconds later it would clear after freezing for a few seconds. Once again, the problem was user error. I was too stupid to think it was actually something I did. I bet if I test video it won't give me problems like before. I don't know what the culprit was but I'm sure I might run into it again. It would be good to know which program isn't behaving.
when you change your wallpaper, how long does it take after you select a new wallpaper for the new one to save? Mine seems to take longer than it should, maybe 4-5 seconds. Is that normal? Seems like my Droid Incredible did it really quick.

Both my Epic and Evo take a few seconds so I wouldn't put too much stock in it.
As for the OP, I would try reinstalling your essential apps one by one and letting the phone run a bit with each to see specifically which app is the culprit.

I knew something was making your phone slower than normal. Glad to hear you got it figured out.
I just noticed that beautiful Widgets, a few keyboards, and gingerbread keyboard were sluggish or maybe causing slow down. I found gingerkeyboard to be much quicker and a little smaller than the other. I'm going to try to look for apps that get high ratings from a lot of users and are the smallest in size when compared to the others. So far my research is working good. There was a ringtone download program that was very popular and had high ratings that I downloaded, got what I wanted, then uninstalled it. It wasn't behaving itself very well.
