Dialup on Hermes - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Man, I hope I don't get flamed here, but I have checked using the advanced google search, ect and couldn't fnd my problem, so here it is
My ISP (Telus) gives me 10 hours of dialup a month.I want to be able to use my 8525 to connect to dialup so I can check email ect from the different cities I end up.
I added a new modem connection and used the Hayes cmpatible on Com1, added the dialup number, login and password. It dials the number, waits, then gives me the cannot connect screen.
I've triple checked the settings, login and password...and still can't connect
If you know how to make it go, please share the info, I would greatly appreciate it!

Gawd even in Australia i dont think there is many using Dial-up and we have the slowest internet in the world! only 10 hours you think with the amount they will get from you using your mobile and dialup they would just give you unlimited

thats just on top of my adsl. I guess its for those who roam alot.
Still no answer to as what I am doing wronng tho, anybody???

Dialup using your 8525
Hi,
I had the same problem. To be able to connect with the 8525 you need to switch your signal to GSM and it will let you dialup. To do this I got a software called BandSwitch from Daniel Herrero Rey at www.commmprpro.com.
Good Luck,
Luis

i am also trying to use dialup on this device. I live in Canada and out data plans SUCK ASS! I have some dial up access from my ISP (bell sympatico) and i want to dial up but everytime i try to connect, it fails!

thanx for the link, I will try it now

can't seem to get it to stick to GSM mode. It switches back to auto mode right away

nonsense, bandswitch is not what he need!
some think too complicated when trying to anser such really basic question:
Create a new connection (settings/connections) and chose mobileconnection as modem (dont choose haiescompatible modem or 3g modem). then add username + passw. + dial in tel.number (which depend on your serviceprovider, if you dont know then ask him). thats all.
each time you connect to the net you will use GSM network.
If you want to use UMTS connection again you must select (switch back) to ISP connection by hand (settings/connection).

How can I stop connecting to the Net via GPRS if no wireless

Hi folks
Been playing with my new O2 XDA II exec toy for a couple of days now and came across this forum.
I have a question;
I can connect fine with wireless, but if I either switch off wireless, or start Opera/Internet Explorer without any internet connection, the phone automatically tries to dial the GPRS connection number. This is annoying and I'd want the phone to do nothing or give an error if there is no internet connecttion available. How do I change this in the settings?
The only way to stop the OS from dialing a gprs or dial-up connection is to have none of them configured in the connection settings. Sometimes you even need to hard-reset to get rid of them as your device still 'remembers' the settings & connects the gprs while you have deleted all connections.
Regards, M
Can you untick the remember username and password box? Thats what I have done, and if it does try to connect it wond go past that.
Eeeeh,
my gprs ain't using user/password. R u referring dial-up?
Cheers, M
I just make a spoof GPRS connection called VJSpoof, with no details in it.
Select this one when you want to disable GPRS, or go back to the normal one went you want to use GPRS. I use this when reading news on NewsReader offline, because otherwise it tries to connect up to download pictures.

On my GPRS I have a username and password box, although nothing needs to be entered in it. I make sure the box which says Always Remember These Details is unticked.
haha vijay... I like your thinking... works a treat, just remember to manually select them, and not have it autopick tries to dial out, then error

Blackberry Connect Behaviour

Questions for people using the blackberry connect software:
I want to sign up for cingular's blackberry service, especially since I am overseas more often than not for work.
(Some of these are questions, some are assumptions. just trying to get some info )
My question(s) are:
1) Blackberry connect acts as your internet connection, right?
2) Does anyone use it and get a UMTS connection instead of GPRS?
3) Does your hermes act like it has a normal connection? (in other words, if I turn on Blackberry connect, can I use other progs which use that net connection - say Flexmail 2007 or IE or somesuch)
4) Does the blackberry stuff use the existing calendar /addressbook programs on the hermes, or does it use it's own? (assuming it's own)
Thanks for the help. Wondering if I can sign up for the blackberry service and basically get a flat fee rate on data when I am in Europe, etc.

1. BB Connect uses your internet connection.
2. BB Connect only connects while under a GPRS/GSM/EDGE connection. In other words, you will need to force your connection or while in a GPRS area to use GSM only. You can do this within the connection Band settings.
3. You can use the internet connection from any program while BB Connect is running. However, Since BB Connect is a lower priority connection, applications like pIE, etc. will take a higher priority over BB Connect and force the BB Connect client to idle while it waits for the connection. This is an automatic process.
4. BB Connect will uses the built in PIM applications (Pocket Outlook, etc.)
Cingular has a few Blackberry plans including a unlimited plan.
thanks for the response.
So that doesn't sound as good as I was hoping.
I was hoping that Blackberry would be a conduit for the rest of my applications to use, instead of being one of many apps using one network connection.
So much for cost savings and/or surfing the net via blackberry connect.

I am assuming I understand your connection question. BB Connect is no different then other applications that use a internet connection. BB Connect uses the internet connection to connect and pull down mail. Other apps don't use BB Connect to get a connection. If you have a BB plan, that will allow you to have a connection not only for email, but for any app (i.e. Internet Explorer)
hmmm... interesting point.
What you are saying is that from cing's point of view, my device would be a "blackberry" although it would actually be a hermes.
What I would have to figure out is if cingular filters out connections so that you can only connect to the blackberry server....

That's correct. Cingular has no idea nor cares what device you are using. They actually sell devices like the Nokia E62 (BB Connect preinstalled) and Treo 650 which has the BB Connect software available for download.

Interesting, so BB Connect or the BB network is not compatible with UMTS? What are the symptoms BB Connect displays when UMTS is active?
I played around with this yesterday on cingular USA, but could not get the Connect software to connect, instead it would say network available then fall back to "suspended by user". BIS account creation wouldn't recognize my PIN&IMEI combo.
Thought this was a show stopper, but perhaps it's not.
Thanks
yeah, it only works with GSM - you have to force the band away from utms.
if you go over on howard forums and look in the cingular section, you can find info - I think that I saw that error mentioned....

When BB Connect is fully connected to the BES/BIS it will display 4 dots. For some reason, and I don't know why is that the BB Connect client doesn't like a UMTS connection. It might have todo with how GPRS/GSM holds a connection. Here is a handy link for connection status indications.
As far as the BIS registration, you will need to create a NEW account on the Cingular BIS site. Then you will be able to register your device and BB Connect.

Hi there, sorry to be so unspecific, but at least I wanted to share my experience
German O2 XDA/HERMES recent, used in Belgium with a Company BB service from Proximus, using BB connect 2.16 usually via UMTS, but when roaming also via GPRS; never forced it to GSM.
It is very slow! so you need to be patient; 1 min waiting until everything has re-connected is not unusual.
I remember that I had the same issue of BB Connect monopolizing the internet connection so that Skype not even started and IE was not able to connect to the internet neither.
After a cold reset and re-installation of everything it works now to expectations:
BB C is usually always on and on UMTS
When starting IE, a pop up apprears saying, connecting to ...
that's when BBC goes 'offline' Symbol :!
I can then surf the Internet
You must TERMINATE IE, not just leave it running in the background
After some time, BBC will automatically re-connect. If you try to speed up, it will complain that the connection is still blocked by another program.
I believe that BB C creates another hidden connection which is not visible in the connection folder, but if you use fit4cat, there is a tweak for 'force connection always on' and there I can see Blackberry as connection
I did not notice any handling difference between UMTS or GPRS.
HOWEVER
I have another problem as following:
I carefully checked the BB C services, but I cannot get any synchronisation of deleted mails, neither when I deletem them on the Desktop, nor when I deleted them on the Mobile.
Any experience with that ??

I'm using BB Connect with a Vario II on TMUK.
When BB Service is on, I am connected through the blackberry.net APN, but via UMTS. If I want to browse, check POP3 email or do anything else, I have to be connected through the TMUK Internet Access Point, which is how I access Web 'N Walk and my unlimited data allowance. This, of course, interrupts my BB connection.
I believe it should be possible to use the blackberry.net APN for web-surfing as well because on RIM devices, all data goes through the BB APN. However, if I try to manually set up a new connection with the blackberry.net APN and route data traffic through it, it doesn't work.
So, not quite sure, but it should be possible to use the blackberry bundle on whatever network as the conduit for data traffic that one of the posters here was referring to - might just need a chat with tech support at your network.
Dave
other post says BBC does not support MDS, so you cannot surf using blackberry.net (not sure what MDS is, but guess it is in a real BB)
also can confirm that I have to suspend the Blackberry GPRS/EDGE connection before IE and POP3 mail will work - both GPRS connections (Blackberry and normal GPRS) are active, but the Blasckberry one seems to have priority
using HTC P3300 and TMO BBC client 2.1.2.31
ive been using BBConnect on both the XDA Exec and the V1605 for well over a year, it will connect to the BB Server using whatever PHONE network band is available e.g. UMTS if in a good Vodafone signal area or it will step back to GPRS if it doesnt, there are issues when roaming on other networks which will not pass through the BB connection so for example when in Germany on a supposed Roaming Partners network BB doesnt connect. I just have to force the Phone to try to connect to VF which then obviously works albeit a low speed connection. as for using PIE whenever I try to connect it disconnects the BB Connection and connects again using the VF connection, I agree this is a bit @rse as you would have thought the applicaitons could see that there is a usable connection there and should therefore utilise it..
If anyone knows of a registry setting that can be modified to fix the connection hopping I would be interested.
Problem with BB C on Tytn
Hi, I downloaded the BB c software from Voda.de, and installed it onto my Tytn with WM5. the instalation and registering to the network was fine.
but I cant do e-mail set up... it's grayed out and I cant click it...
I also tried registering/creating an account through mobileemail.vodafone.net,
but to no avail. after I input IMEI and PIN, then create Usename and password, I get the notice, "The system has encounted an error".
I thought I might have wrong software, and to keep things simple I put WM6(Official rom from HTC) into handset, then put BB C 4 for WM6, (again from Voda.de) but to no avail. same situation.
the phone connects to BB GPRS/3G, it shows PIN, IMEI, IP.
so connection wise there doesn't seem to be problem.
but cant create an account...
anyone come across same problem??
I've been trying to figgure this out for like three days now.
Thanks to those who'll give me advice!!

try this....
1) Change device ID, from Start -> Settings -> System -> About -> Device ID to HTC_TyTN
2) Edit your registry: HKLM\System\Versions\AKU key, change the key from (1.0.0) or whatever in there to .0.4.2

8525 to connect via dial up networking

Can the 8525 dial in to my internet providers access number and access the internet via dial up networking?
Thanks
Ok, here is what I am doing.
Start-->Settings-->Connections-->Connections-->add new modem connection.
My Connection - Name
Cellular Line - Select a Modem
Enter number for my dial up service
Enter Username
Enter Password
Leave Domain Blank
(no changes to the advanced section)
Click Finish
When I select the new profile "My Connection" and tell it to connect, I am again prompted for my password. I enter my password and press OK
It says connecting to "My Connection" and Connecting using Cellular Line.
This flashes up twice then I get the message:
Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacturer's documentation and try again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Edit:
one other thing that I tried was putting in my home phone number as the number to dial. When I try to connect, it doesn't seem to even be dialing the number because my home phone did not ring or anything.
Seems that Cingular does not allow this according to this thread
That really sux!
Lantern20,
I'm using a HTC Tytn in Sweden that is Operator free. I then use the chip from my company's subscription to Vodafone (Telenor). Everything works fine, including GPRS, but I get the same message as you do when trying a dial-up connection.
And, same as you, it doesn't seem to dial at all. The message comes too quick. If I manually dial the dial-up number, the modem answers in the other end, so the number is okay.
I haven't checked if Vodafone still allow CSD in their network (according to the thread you pointed out), but I do believe they do, since I already used the same chip in a Sony-Ericsson phone to dial-up. So, it seems that dial-up works with my chip.
Anybody comment???
I'm having the same problem. The strange thing is that I tried dialing manually on my phone to the ISP and I can hear the modem pick up on the other end. Any insights?
Dial-up Connection
I can get mine to connect but I am unable go load browser pages.
I had a 8125 that worked great.

How to if I only want data via WiFi - Don't want to pay carrier data fees

I'm sorry... I've searched the forum using a few different keywords and can't find exactly how to do this. I did see a posting on "MoDaCo_NoData" but it seems to crash on my Tytn (installs but errors after it runs).
I have downloaded the official HTC WM6 Rom update and have that installed now. I'm just reading up on the hacked roms (Black Majik)... might try it in a week or two.
I know on WM5 if I didn't enable WiFi and by mistake ran IE, it downloads the data from the cell network, which is definately NOT what I want. Worse, if for some dumb reason, Wifi is a low signal, it might drop and push you onto the cell network for data, which has happened to me a few times now and unless you are paranoid (I am now), you never notice that it's slipped onto cell data network. It's starting to cost me a fortune.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

If I do item 1 above, and change it to My Work Network, then I can no longer access web sites via WiFi. Which is what I'd like to do, just use WiFi, no other wireless data transfers via the cell carrier.
Thanks for your help and any clarifications..
You are facing errors with your Modaco Nodata because you haven't setup any data connection (3G or GPRS) to your provider. Try setting it up and running Modaco Nodata again.
It works a breeze for me. But then again, if you don't have any connections setup, you shouldn't worry about anything in fact.

Simply go into the network settings area (the same area people have noted above) and remove every connection other than your wi-fi.
Poke around, you'll figure it out.
Even easier
Call your carrier and disable data to that phone. Then there are NO worries that you accidentally change a setting and get a big bill as a result.

Bluetooth and GPRS

Hi,
I have an application that connects to the Bluetooth DUN service of my mobile phone. By using the hyperterminal and the windows console application that I have done using C language, I am able to dial out to a fixed line.
However, when I switch to the GPRS mode using +CGDCONT=1,"IP","APN", I will get the NO CARRIER error after I dial *99#. My service provider has verified that the *99# is the correct number to dial.
Please do advice me on how I can proceed.
Thanks and regards,
PS
I might be a little bit off in my explanations and assumptions here, but my understanding of the way it works is that GPRS is your data connection. When you dial the access number you are establishing your data connection. If I am reading into your purpose correctly, you are wanting to use your phone as a modem to call into an ISP or to a dialup server. If that is the case, you would just dial the number without switching to gprs first.
This is probably a bad example, but consider your gprs connection like an ethernet lan connection at your home or work. If you wanted to use your home computer that is connected to the ethernet, to call an ISP or dialup server, you would need to use a telephone line plugged into the modem port, not try to dial over the ethernet (VOIP excluded). Does that help explain things, or make it all clear as mud.
Hi Steve,
Thank you for the advice.
I have tried to dial the number provided by my ISP without switching to GPRS first. The number I dial is the generic *99#. I guess that once I make this call, the telephone operator, which is also my ISP, would know that I am trying to connect a dial up.
But after I make the dial by sending ATDT*99#, I get a respond "CONNECT" then some unreadable characters follows for a while. After sometimes, the "NO CARRIER" respond will appear and the unreadable characters stop. Are these characters the PPP packets for a dial up? I am also not prompted to enter any password or login at all.
Are there any thing else that I should change?
Thanks and regards,
PSLoh
Again, I may be wrong here, but if you are trying to connect to a remote computer using DUN, then you are trying to have your computer use your phone as a dial up modem. I believe that the ATDT*99# is the setting to connect your phone to your GPRS service. Once you connect to GPRS, the only thing the GPRS network is going to understand is an IP address, not a phone number.
I think, if I understand you correctly, that you are tethering your phone to your computer with bluetooth and then attempting to make a call to a DUN host using a phone number (not the ATDT*99#), but a real 7 - 10 digit number.
Tethering is typically where you connect your computer to your phone via usb bluetooth etc, and use the devices data service (GPRS, UTMS, etc) to browse the internet, pull email, etc. You can't dial a number over this service as you are connected to the internet, not the public switched phone network.
Check this post for tethering instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-337714.html
You are actually trying to use your mobile phone as an analog modem, but your phone has no hardware inside it to respond to the answering modem when you call your ISP or remote host via a phone call.
There is a way to do this, but it involves some work. You have to build a small adapter that will convert your mike and earphone connections into a 2 wire that will plug into your computers analog modem. There are problems with this type of data service. It is slow, doesn't support cell changes, and may be disallowed by your carrier. Check this post to see what I am talking about.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=361928
Let me know if this sheds any light on the subject, or if I just really don't understand what you are trying to do.
Thanks,
Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply. I always thought that *99# was the number for me to dial up to the ISP but now I guess I have to find out more about it.
I was using the ATcommand: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","APN" to set up my phone to use GPRS network and then ATDT*99#. I thought that by issuing these 2 commands to the phone, I would be able to instruct it to connect to my ISP and set up the PPP link between my phone and the laptop.
Do you mean that the number to dial is wrong?
If I were to succeed in dialing to my ISP, are there any things (commands or code) that I need to set up the PPP link on my WinXP laptop?
Thanks and regards,
PSLoh
