WDP hooker? - Wing, P4350 General

as i was starting up my wing, the top where it says "start" or what program you are in, it said "WDP hooker". what is that?

I get this, too. I did a search for any programs or files with that name and didn't get anything to come up.

i get the same thing. weird, i wonder what it might be. could be clever programming, someone wanted recognition. funny if so!

a week and a half after i bought my mother a wing, she just called me up and told me that after her's booted up, it said "WDP HOOKER"... she also wanted me to see if anything was wrong with it, but all appeared fine. we gotta go to someone who'll give us a few answers at least.

I just got this msg on my phone as well..
My phone has been acting slow for the past week and very unresponsive.. reception has been horrible.. is this maybe a virus or trojan?
Any input on this matter?
Thanks
Al

it has something to do with the myfaves running on the startup.

it a virus wdp hooker
wat it does is wait n till u log on the internet and then downlod a virus very slowly. basically it sucks up all ur memory from ur main device then effect all ur data even the memory card. u must reboot u wing all over again. it location. n da windows folder it start wit (comp) something u can remove. :

it a virus wdp hooker
damyum i lost everything, also even if u remove the sd card end restore da file its 2 late its already curropted!!!

so there is absolutely no way of getting rid of it..?

what do u mean by the windows folder it starts with..?

I don't think it is a virus or anything like that. I deleted the myfaves stuff and now the wdphooker doesn't show up anymore.

I am sure its not a virus. It has something to do with startup programs.

well im pretty sure i have a virus on my wing, anyone have any idea what i could do to get rid of it?? because hard resetting isn't doing a damn thing.. well clear storage.. is hard resetting it the manual way any different??

wdp hooker is not a virus
It is part of the WAP stack for wireless communication, and it is used for provider-specific SMS send and receive activities.
Here's a quote from Microsoft:
This structure is used for provider-specific data for use with the functions SmsSendMessage and SmsReadMessage. The Wireless Datagram Protocol (WDP) provider is a generic protocol that allows WDP applications to pass data through the Short Message Service (SMS) bearer.
WDP is the bottom layer of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) stack. It provides a consistent connection to higher layers in the protocol stack by abstracting the underlying bearers. Note that the WDP provider described in this document is simply the bearer protocol used for supporting WDP over SMS, it is not the actual WDP interface. See the WAP-200-WDP "Wireless Datagram Protocol (WDP)" specification for more detail.

WAP and Yahoo!

On a PC, you can go to http://wap.oa.yahoo.com, and login to your yahoo account to read your emails, etc.
If I do the same from my XDA2, it says "Unable to connect: Ensure that your modems are present and inserted correctly, and no network card present".
If I try this with any other web site (e.g. http://www.bbc.co.uk) it connects and works fine.
Does anyone else get this, and does anyone know a way around it?
Thanks!
On my XDA, http://wap.oa.yahoo.com works fine.
But WAP stinks on a capable device like the XDA or XDAII. Why not use http://www.yahoo.com instead, or set up your Inbox to download your Yahoo headers and/or messages?
can i realy do that?? setup INBOX for yahoooo???
please show me how! i couldnt even set the outlook express on PC to do that!
thanks a million.

You can only do this if you pay extra for POP3 access to Yahoo emails - which I don't want to do as this isn't my primary email account.
Also, going through http://www.yahoo.com means you get all the ads, graphics, etc. Even over a GPRS line, this makes it quite painfull.

I just got a new XDA II and I could access Yahoo without problems. After an involutary hard reset all the O2 stuff got installed (seems it was not installed the first time I used the device), and now I'm having the same problem as you're describing. Has O2 added something "clever" so that if it sees "wap" in the path, it thinks it should use a wap connection? In any case I can't find these settings and delete it. I want it to work as it did before the hard reset! Help!
Try wsp://wap.oa.yahoo.com insted of http://wap.oa.yahoo.com
HTTP = PC
WSP = WAP
8)
cheers
WSP doesn't work either. Probably because that signals even more to the computer that you're trying to establish a WAP connection, which I don't want to do and which isn't set up either. The funny thing is that it worked before the hard reset, and I never had any problems on my old XDA I.
I managed to remove all the O2 stuff from the extended ROM, and after a hard reset, I can now access http://mobile.yahoo.com/mail again! Once you access http://mobile.yahoo.com/mail, the path changes to http://wap.oa... and from this point on it complained. Until I removed the O2 stuff. So now I'm happy it works, but I'd still like to know what settings O2 infiltrated to stop it from working. Does anyone have a clue?

I think it have something to do with Connection settings and or Registery settings for Browser ID string (User ID String)
example:
Of youre browser ID is "Mozilla/4.0(compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320)" Than you w'll get a diffrent page if you have something else.
After I changed my Browser ID (to see more free stuff from orange GRPS/Orange World) I cant get the colored page of Yahoo Too.
Can you post here youre Browser ID please?
To see youre browser ID string, Visit http://www.showip.com on youre PPC, and let me know please.
Cheers
I just bought an XDA2i and am having the same problem with the mobile Yahoo site. Since nobody has managed to unlock the extended ROM in XDA2i yet , I cannot remove the O2 stuff that is causing the problem (forcing a different connection for web adresses starting with "wap"). On my XDA2 i could unlock the extended ROM and remove the O2 bits, and this solved the problem. With XDA2i I'm stuck...

ActiveSync Auto Starts By Itself in Running Programs

Hi Guys
I have the JJ working well, and I have always seemed to have this problem, but the ActiveSync always just starts up by itself without being connected or requested to.
I have read a few forums on this but nothing really helped. My original thought was SPB Weather wanting to auto update, but any changes to these settings didnt help.
I have done a full hard reset today, and keeped the apps pretty straight forward, ie the SPB suite (PP, Diary, Play, Weather, GPRS), and Resco (Explorer, Audio, Radio, Photo). Switched to MSVC rather than the original phone dialler. The rest is pretty much as it has come.
I havent done any registry hacks yet as I thought I would test a clean run on this to see how it goes.
I have read that ActiveSync is a big drain on the memory, and never likes to give all the memory back from what it needs when starting up, so every time I kill it in running programs, it comes back. I get about 600kb every time I kill it, but I am sure it takes more than that to run and start it.
Anyway, any ideas as to what might be causing it to startup by iteslf would be great. Further ideas on how to stop it from automatically starting would be wonderful.
activesync autostart
doesnt anybody have any comments or feedback as to their experiences with activesync auto starting of it own accord? it constantly needs to be shut down from running programs.
Does it happen to you? does it not happen to you? do you know what the cause is? do you know how to fix it?
anybody?
Simon, I have no major issues with activesync running.
Are you saying that AS is popping up even from hard reset?
Ensure that you're not running an RSS reader etc, I use Newsbreak and it loves to try to connect up to the 'net.
It seems that it is likely to be the weather, or possibly gprs prog, that is requesting access to a net connection. Try disabling the weather app completely. I use weather panel, and it took some arm twisting to get it to stop automatically seeking out a net connection.
Worst case, set up a spoof or dummy network connection that is unable to connect to the net. Set this as your default connection when you're offline, and then any progs trying to access the net will be thwarted. This solution at least works perfectly for me with Newsbreak for reading the news "offline".

I had the same problem with my JJ and I found a setting ("Schedule") in AS on the JJ that allowed me to set the syn to "Manual". Funny, I've not this problem on my Exec.
hi
this happens as AS is by default required to connect to server automatically at a given interval
inorder to get rid of this...go into AS and create a fake server (put any values) then after creating it..reclick options and go into schedule and change the settings to manual sync and check the roam box aswell
tht shod take care of it
Thanks zohaer21 and jah
I will let you know how it goes, it was more frustrating than anything, not sure if it is the cause of my memory drain. I knew of sync manually option somewhere from my 2003 days, but since I didnt setup a sync with a server connection, the ability to set a schedule was always greyed out.
I'll see how long it takes, if at all before it pops up again.
Cheers
Simon

@Betox, from what I remember you need to be linked via AS to your PC/laptop and then from either the JJ or the PC you should be able to change the Schedule to "manual".
JJ & AS
worked perfectly thanks people for your help.
create the dummy server sync, set the sync connections to manual.
delete the server sync.
havent seen head nor tail of activesync since.

1st post as XDA EXEC owner some ???

Just got my EXEC XDA this weekend, tried setting up my GPRS,MMS settings (using T-mobile USA) all my settings seem right; but I can't get get pocket IE to open, I can however get Opera to open and surf, so I think my settings are correct? I also cannot connect to my email accounts(yahoo, gmail) it tries to connect then says connection lost, but actually the GPRS connection is still active. What do I need to do to fix this? All help welcomed. Thanks
sounds like pie is corrupt (outlook uses it's tcp/ip stack as well)
i'd hard reset.
Damn, I was hoping I could go awhile without having to do that already, I don't have Outlook on my computer so I skipped that portion of active-sync. How would it have corrupted?
well grats on your exec dude, its something you will like
Maybe if it was ebayed someone had 'tried' things with some of the xda files, im not sure how to fix this but not installing the office outlook on your pc shouldnt have caused a problem.
Thanks, It's a new unit, so I hope thats not the problem maybe I should run it in corporate mode?
If it's just a settings issue (and not a corruption problem), there's a cab file that youn can install that has the T-mobile USA GPRS settings. I can email it to you if you PM or IM me with your email addy. It doesn't do the MMS settings, which I can't seem to get working on my device.
well if thats the case, try get in touch with the suppliers of the phone, ask them if theyve had any probs etc, im sure you'l get it fixed

didn't know people were writing viruses for windows mobile
here's one: http://download.cnet.com/Kaspersky-...obile-Phone-Edition/3000-2064_4-10640245.html
have a search in Google and you'll probably find some more.
Just a heads up, complete waste of space and time to install/use one
Why?
The reason why I looking for antivirus is...
I am not a messanger person. Yesterday I wanted to test internet connection in khan's rom. so i connected to msn live messanger using my polaris. I was connected for about 5 minutes. it works well. than i disconnected my messanger and since than people has been complaining to me that i log in my msn and send xxx pictures and links to xxx website. but in realitiy I not even on my msn. I deleted my internet connection in my PDA. And this still happen. My friend say I log in msn few seconds and send a lot of spam. and i log off on my own. I using a registerd version of bitf=defender and scan my computer using microsoft one care and no virus in my pc. The only possible thing is virus in my polaris?!!!?
3 things comes to my head.
1. public internet you used a public internet with your phone, some one saw your name and pass when you where on it.
the other two are not related to your phone.
2. public computer... dont have to say more about that.
3. someone hacked your pass. could be a computer virus to.
and i have a question aswell in this post.
Is there anny known virus/adware etc for WM out there?
if annyone had it please explain for the rest of us so we know whn and if we get it
Is there a virus for PDA?

I hope you have a protected network home
you should search your home cpu for malware and/or virus.
"I install and run avira antivirus for PPC and it say i am protected agains 88 virus/mal ware. So there must be viruses for ppc."
i wounder what all 88 viruses/malwares do to your phone?
I would be amazed if the antivirus said "your phone is secure because there are no virus"...
I use PDA for 5 years now using internet both WiFi and 3G,HSDPA,etc everiday and never had any problem with it and never heard of someone having problems with...in normal mobile phones i heard alot of abuse in the form of sms and bluetooth.

My TD2 is going online (EDGE or HSDPA) by itself!

I have the following problem: my HTC Touch Diamond 2 (from T-Mobile) is going online and stays online for hours until I notice and disconnect.
I can't be sure, but it's possible that Mobile Shell is the reason, because I don't have any other running applications. Is this maybe a built-in feature of TD2?
Is this a known issue? Any hints or tips? (ActiveSync and GMail are set to synchronize manually).
yes look in the Options of mobile shell
its the weather Programm that uses these autoConnects all the time
ive had the same "problem" as well...
if u have SPB Traveler too, then uve to look in every single programm option
SPB Traveler options
SPB MObile Shell options
SPB weather options
take out the automaticly updates...
fixed =D
I've checked Windows Update and Weather Update. Both are off.
I've found that I have a suspicious widgetmanager.exe running on my PDA. Is this coming from Opera? I'll kill it and see if it helps.
Maybe it's the (totally useless) PushInternet service of Opera.
Here's how you can stop it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532948&highlight=stop+pushinternet
But the problem is that sometimes you want to browse some saved pages.
There are some saved pages that still require connection to update something.
And the phone goes on-line automatically WITHOUT asking the user. This annoys me a lot, since I have a fixed traffic amount and I don't want to spend it unawares.
I solved this issue by modifying a letter in my default connection.
This way, when the phone tries to go on-line automatically I get an error message saying it cannot connect. Now, depending on my needs, I either dismiss the message to stay off-line or fix that modified letter to go on-line.
To modify your default connection:
Settings tab, All settings, Connections tab, Connections, Manage existing connections, Click your default connection, Edit, Next, (here change the "Access point name" -- my last letters are .ro and I delete the "o"), Next and then Finish.
Maybe this solution is a bit rough but it works for me and I'm happy .
What's the problem? I have always a data connection open on my phone, 24 hours a day. You only pay for the amount of data, not for staying online.
I was referring to traffic.
The phone transfers data without asking my permission.
> You only pay for the amount of data, not for staying online.
The phone is connecting to the Internet automatically upon necessity. The fact that the connection is open means that some program or service had the necessity and transferred the data (at least one byte, but likely more). So the traffic is not zero in this case.
Another reason is that I pay 7EUR per every day that I connect to the Internet + the traffic price.
And reason #3 is that I want to know and control what my phone is doing and not otherwise.
I'm still observing the situation, this widgetmanager.exe is likely the source of the problem, but can't confirm it 100% yet.
Try SPB Wireless Monitor, then you can see whats connected, amount of traffic etc.
No need of buying, just use the trial for 15 days
Thanks for the tip. I have used it. That's how I know about widgetmanager.exe downloading something. I keep it killed and wait for the problem to reappear. After 24 hours I'll know if it's widgetmanager.exe or not.
I like your solution and I am going to give that a try. Thank you.
widgetmanager.exe was the reason. It comes with T-Online ROM. Thank you everybody for your help. Issue closed.
