From Hermes to Titan - my quick and dirty review. - Mogul, XV6800 General

I've been on T-mobile (USA) for the past 4 years, one of them with my Hermes.
Always loved the phone but the lack of 3G finally pushed me over the edge to order from Sprint.
I got in on their SERO deal and have unlimited data, unlimited text, unlimited nights/weekends and 500 minutes/month for $30. I got the Mogul for $280 with (hopefully) another $100 rebate. Also get $25 back on the first 2 invoices.
$30 is what I'm paying T-mobile for data alone, so the deal was too good to pass up.
I'm on my third day and have to say I'm impressed. Coverage is good, data is awesome (average 650kb/s compared to 80 or 90 on T-mobile). The phone itself is nicer than the Hermes/TyTN was, but because it's still the same OS it was easy to find my way around.
The phone is thinner, the scrollwheel feels more sturdy and the 256Mb memory is a welcome addition.
I installed the Kaiser/HTC home screen, setup Exchange email and installed the few apps I need.
It's been rock solid, hasn't crashed once.
Bluetooth was a little unreliable till I installed the WM6 DUN hack I had on my TyTN.
DUN wasn't active either till the hack/patch. I can now tether using DUN onto my Nokia N800 which works like a charm. Mozilla on the N800 reports between 450 and 800 kb/s.
PAN to my notebook is flawless, once again, that tethering just works like it should.

Could you please point to the DUN patch/hack?

I'm in "process of switching" from T-Mobile to Sprint also. The same reasons- no 3G and the SERO is to good to pass. Swapping 8125 to Mogul.
Could you please point to the patch/hack you were using on Hermes? For me PAM works fine using USB, but over BlueTooth/PAN it sucks big time- I'm unable to get more than 20Kbps. (I'm using laptop with BT v.2). Thanks!
BTW, have you seen this? Rumors about 3G at T-Mo USA:
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007...the-samsung-t629-coming-in-less-than-a-month/

3G at T-mobile has always been a rumor... I'm sure it'll show up sooner or later, but I doubt it'll be as fast as EVDO REV.A (when we get our updates). Plus, there isn't a phone out there that supports t-mobile on 3G at 1700MHz.
The patch is in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=314371&highlight=tomtom
I can confirm that it works just fine on the Mogul.

Flame me please

anybody have links to benchmark tests of wizard vs. hermes? thinking about getting a hermes and i need to know if its really THAT much faster than the wizy.
excuse the title, im working on about 2 hours sleep
Ive got both and I must admit my wizard running crossbow (wm6) is leaving my hermes for dust! However I do feel that the roms for hermes are not on par yet with the ones for the wizard, so hopefully sometime soon there be a rom that shows the hermes for it true colours
IMO, the diff between a hermes and a wizard is something no ROM can fix:
3G
I've never surfed so fast. My search today plugin (treo lift) gives me instant google results. I can stream 96K to my A2DP headset. I don't use the $10 Hotel Internet coverage any more because my laptop can access 3G Internet speeds internet through DUN (soon to be Internet Sharing when the AKU 3.x TyTN ROM is released).
Before I had 3g coverage I missed my 8125 because it's ROM really was faster and besides, the device had almost double the battery life.
Now, I can't go back.

i agree with u 100% 1000kbit/sec on 3g COMPARED TO 96kbit/sec on edge
Hands down, the 3G data is addictive. The first time you travel with it, you won't know how you did without it before... as long as you can keep this thing juiced, you'll be happy.
Soon The WM6 will be available for Hermes...
Eagerly waiting,....
omg!!!! are you serious? so you mean that my 8125 that i got for about $100, unlocked for free, and my dog left bite marks on, with crossbow running on it is faster than the miracle machine (tytn)?
sorry for the gloating. i was really about to shell out the money to get a hermes. but now i don't think i have to.
question... 3g is embeded in hardware right? there wont be a software tweak to allow 3g on to a wizard, correct? i'm on tmobile and i love it here. only thing is internet package is $30 and its not even 3g. i refuse to go to cingular. (we've got big beef since about 1999 when they were at&t. still haven't paid those bastards. no one talks to me like that.)
thanks for the info guys.
*back to wizard subforum*
Faster is a relative term. It's screen response is faster when overclocked to 240mhz (who doesn't overclock their wizard tho?). It's connectivity is snail like by comparison. 3G is a hardware feature unfortunately.
Thanks for stopping by!

Should I keep my phone?

I, obviously, have a Herald and I was wondering that if I get a Mogul and go with Sprint because they have EVDO and apparently their plan would have everything mine has but would be almost 30% cheaper, would that be a good deal?
I was also thinking about the Kaiser and I've read that you can unlock it to work for any kind of service provider but I was wondering if it supports EVDO and I'm just wondering if it was worth switching because of all the buying/selling of things things.
The Herald does has a slow processor and not only is the service plan good but I wondering if either of those phones are "better" than this one?
EDVO and GMS are imcompatible. You won't be able to use a tilt in Sprint's network, only in other GSM networks. (AT&T and Tmobile, for example.)
Where do you live? T-Mobile's 3G roll-out is picking up momentum, they've been cracking out 2-3 cities per week lately. It may not be too far off for you. Of course you will need a new phone, but the Android device is supposed to be announced next week...
I live in El Paso, Texas. Is there a place where I can check on the status of T-Mobile's 3g area progress?
The main thing I want is faster internet for my phone (or possibley a different one) and a faster processor. I was going to sell my Wing since it's only a month old (got a new one ) and get a Mogul on ebay and get Sprint's 70 dollar plan that has all the same features my T-mobile plan has but Sprint's is cheaper and faster internet, plus the phone is better no?
Also. Do you know the specs for this phone? Wow how much better is the Android cause I read a lot of nice things about it
Looks like El Paso isn't getting 3G by the end of 2008, but several other places in Texas already have it or will by the end of the year.
http://tmonews.com/2008/09/t-mobile-officially-announces-3g-cities/
I don't know the specs for the Android phone, but there are some vids on Youtube and it's looking pretty sweet. Supposedly T-Mobile is going to have something official to say on it on Sept. 23.
Ah yeah I've seen videos and read about how people gossip that it's only going to cost 200 dollars. I hope it has a slide-out keyboard.
Hmm damn maybe I should just wait it out then??
Oh I was also wondering if the 5.99 T-Zones proxy hack still works to get full internet? Cause 20 dollars is very outrageous and that's one of the concrete reasons as to why I want a different plan with faster, and cheaper, internet.
Re: T-Zones proxy hack. Some users are reporting that it is still working in certain areas, but T-Mobile is actively closing this loophole. It hasn't worked here in close to a year. Even if it works for you now, I wouldn't bet it will last.
Which data plan are you looking at on Sprint? Some of their 'everything' plans are decent, but IMO $20 for unlimited internet is one of the best deals in the industry.
Hmm that sucks. See I wouldn't have mind paying 20$ for unlimited internet if it went faster than 150kbs/s. This 25kb/s is blasphemy for 20 dollars.
I was looking at sprint's 70$ plan; unlimited texting and picture messaging plus 450 whenever minutes with nights starting at 7pm and their wonderful EV-DO internet. I was planning on buying an HTC Mogul.
I think that's a better deal no? But that Google Android phone is wnticing me to keep T-mobile...

haha me too!
but 3g sounds too expensive haha
Ahh lol well I'm sure the OS for the G1 will be ported... The main reason I wanted a new phone and better internet is because my parents are cheap and can't afford anything and I use internet sharing ALOT for my homework and it's so painfully slow . Plus it would be good to be able to download things that take a few hours rather than a few days.
Yeah but I'm thinking about selling this phone to get it. If the plans are under 100 dollars, I'm going to get it .
Well thanks guys for all the help and answering my questions. I guess I'll wait it out for the G1. I'm glad it's cheap.
buru, do you have EDGE coverage in your area? 25kbs is abysmal, even for straight GPRS! Before EDGE, I could pull close to 40kbs on GPRS, now that EDGE is here my speeds hover just under 200kbs. From what I've heard, some newer phones can surpass 200kbs on EDGE to, if they have up to date hardware with support for the latest EDGE specification. Granted, the Herald is no spring chicken, but you should be able to manage ~175kbs. It doesn't sound like much, but most sites I need to access on my phone offer a mobile site and EDGE speeds are quite tolerable for loading these pages.
Holy **** what?? About 175 kb/s?? Aww **** El Paso, Texas gets nothing good!!
Well I'm not sure but I believe it's GPRS. Plugged in using internet sharing or just downloading on Opera 4.1 my average is always about 25kb/s.
Man that blows that mines rediculously low. Where do you live and should I call T-Mobile and ask what their average speeds should be for my Wing? Cause I do have the total internet.
Damn even at 40kb/s I would be content but 200!! Geez... sadness. Now I'm even more disappointed.
buru- Go to this page and enter your zip code. Be sure to check "Display data coverage" at the bottom. When I searched El Paso, it showed the whole area fully covered by EDGE.
http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/pcc.aspx
Are you running the stock ROM on the Wing? It is notorious for being crap. Also, check your data connection settings... perhaps your Wing is only set to GPRS. I'm not sure what the options are, but when I had my Treo 750 you could choose between GPRS and GRPS/3G... maybe the Wing has an option for EDGE...?
**** yeah I'll check it right now.
Lol the stock ROM is mad slow, screw that . I'm using ttran's wonderful Open Touch 6.5 no throttle and no spb.
I don't believe there's an option for EDGE cause when I connect to the internet it always displays "Connecting to GPRS..." regardless of anything.
Hmm... I'll mess with the internet options a bit and see what's up. If I find that everything points to my internet speeds being faster, should I call T-Mobile or go to their store over here and ask what's up?
Thanks also btw. But does the Wing even support EDGE? Maybe that's why?
The Wing definitely supports EDGE. If it is not a problem with the internet connection settings, you should call Customer Care (1-800-937-8997) and ask for PDA support. Be sure to call from a different phone, as they will want to go through some steps with you on the Wing. Don't even bother going into a store because this is going to be beyond the capabilities of 99% of the reps, and they will just put you on the phone with support anyways.
Hmm I think I will because I looked in the data connections and the only options are Cellular line (GPRS), Cellular line, My ISP, and some other one.
Damn that sucks though. So for sure my phone's internet speed should be faster than 25kb/s?
Based on your options, GPRS is the right setting. Technically, EDGE is a form of GPRS (unlike 3G, which is a whole new protocol). You should be getting more than 25kb for sure.
For the record, using my wing here in Tennessee, it ALWAYS says connecting to GPRS, but it displays an E for Edge network, or a G for GPRS Data network next to the signal icon up top of the screen. In most of the area(in backwoods TN) I get pretty darn good Edge coverage, running around 150 to 175 kbps. Definitely check it out, might try a different ROM if all else fails, just to eliminate that as a problem.
Syn
Hmm well it's always an E next to the network icon but it's easily less than 40kb/s all the time.
**** it I'm calling T-Mobile and asking how fast my internet speeds should be over here where I live.
I'm sure it isn't the ROM I'm using... It's ttran's OT 6.5 and I'm sure almost everyone else is also using it and not getting crappy ass speeds?

tmobile requires data?

so i was just browsing the tmobile site, and i noticed that if you add the snap to your cart as a new contract data is selected by default. why are they doing this, i know several people who just use the dash for a phone with no internet because of the lovely keypad and the many useful apps.
so if i upgrade to the snap are they going to make me add the 25 dollar plan?
if so im not upgrading through them. no 3g in my area, totally not with the extra money right now.
(yea this seems more of an hofo question but i decided to ask here cause i like this forum better)
Yes you are required to get the Data plan, you however are not required to keep it. 24 hours after you place your order simply go back into T-Mobile's web site go into your account and remove the data plan option. Simple as pie
good info to have, just might have to get a snap before the end of the year

I love my Dash, but I cant live without my new Dash 3G. I have only begun to customize it. While I did have 6.1 on my old Dash it was nothing compared to this new one, its so damn fast (even with T-Mo's junk on it). So far the only 'problem' I am having with it is the GPS is a bit slow to lock on (about 10 seconds average), it is faster if I turn on the assisted but there has to be a way to speed up the sat lock
is it really that much better than the dash? how is the cam quality? i have two dash's and one takes great pics, and the other takes so-so pics.
my wife wants sprint when out contract ends. so i might so on a single tmo contract with data and the dash 3g

I posted why I think it is better in another thread so I will save repeating myself. With that said it has a Bigger battery, Bigger Keyboard, Faster processor. Seems a bit more user friendly too(unless you are using the cooked roms on your old dash) You be the judge.
They updated the cam to 2mp so it is a little improvement over the old dash. It does seem to have a lot more Cam features.
Well worth the upgrade IMHO.
I had an interesting experience upgrading my dash to the dash 3g. When I finally made up my mind to purchase the new version I went to the T-Mobile store (corp store) where they told me that I could not purchase the upgrade without a data plan. I decided to hold off and try it on their website. Viola, If you upgrade through the website you are not required to add the data plan. Just a little FYI if you already have T-Mo. Don't know how long it'll be before they catch that but it worked for e

Upgrade to T-Mobile Dash 3G (HTC Maple)
I just upgraded my step son's Blackberry Curve to the Dash 3G (HTC Maple..Snap...Ozone) and there was no mention of having to upgrade to a data plan with the purchase of the Dash 3G. I configured his Curve to run with web2go, the $9.99 plan and currently on my Wing, I run T-Mobile Web (grandfathered) $5.99 using APN epc.tmobile.com. I had a conversation with Tier 2 support and they told me the Dash 3G would only run on their higher priced plans, but they said the same thing about my Wing and his Blackberry and I can tell you it's a breeze to edit "Manage Connections" in Windows Mobile 6.5 and I have no proxy settings on either phone and they work. One note, for Blackberry users the APN is "internet2.voicestream.com" with web2go; take care.

Dash 3G or Sprint Snap?

Which is the better phone? I'm currently using a Dash Excalibur with Tmobile but my contract is up and I can go where I want.
I do like the look of the Dash 3G over the Sprint Snap. However, to sync my email, I need to purchase a Good Messaging license for $240/year with Tmobile. With Sprint, the Good Message license is included.
Tmobile has been my only cellphone carrier. 3G is not in my area but it is rumoured to be available in December.
So if I go with the Dash 3G, I'm looking at +$20 more for the phone and then the additional $240 year for email syncing.
I did not really care for the plastic look of the Sprint Snap. But Sprint throws in a few cool things such as NFL Network etc... Any idea of the cost of the Sprint Navigator GPS that is included? The Dash 3G has Telenav which is $14.95/month I believe.
Also, the Verizon Ozone is an option, but I have not see or read anything about that device.
heres all 3 side by side as per phone scoop..
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/compare.php?id[]=2246&id[]=2020&id[]=2062&id[]=&id[]=
feature wise imho the Ozone wins...ive had the chance to play with the Dash 3g and the Snap..but Ozone won over all with the wifi quickness, cdma & gsm compatibility and most importantly PRICE!
check it out..and read the reviews that should help u make ur decision.
Late.
i have the dash 3g it has basically all the features as the ozone but it has a the track ball instead of the d pad which i find a lot better with web pages and just getting around without a touchscreen plus with it being gsm its a bit thinner..... and the battery life is a little better compared to the other 2..... i don't think u can go wrong ether way there great phones
I owned a dash for a few years, loved it. I have the Ozone now, and tell you what, GET IT. spec for spec they are really about the same, but the price on the ozone. $50. Get the data package, but get WifiRouter for $20 flat fee I think, then you can teather via USB or WIFI and bypass verizons additional charge.
I have not had this thing lock up lick my dash did, and 6.5 will be available for it soon.
I went and visited Verizon and TMobile today and checked out each phone. The Sprint Snap is out, no Wifi.
I liked the Dash 3G much better than the Ozone. The styling was nicer, bigger keyboard and trackball was great. The Ozone was good, but I did not care for the shiny plastic on the front and the D-pad was sunken in a bit, unlike my Dash Excalibur. The trackball seemed like a major improvement. I only used it for a bit and I liked it. But I'm wondering if prolonged use would cause problems with soreness in the wrist.
I am also wondering about the Verizon vs TMobile data network. I do not live in a TMobile 3G area so I will be using Edge (rumor we may have TMobile 3G by end of the year). I would have 3G with Verizon. I have not web browsed much since my Excalibur would not load many sites due to memory issues. This may change with a newer device. I did some speed tests and on TMobile (non-3g) I get 180kb/sec. With Verizon, the first 2 tests were also 180kb/sec but then the 3rd went up to 580kb/sec. I have heard that Verizon has a much faster data network than TMobile.
Tmobile rep said the GPS was unlocked so I could use it with Google Maps. I do not wish to pay extra monthly for GPS. I heard Verizon is unlocked as well.
Verizon gave me a quote on a contract and it's $1 more than what I'm paying with T-Mobile. (unlimited data, no tethering)
So if I go with the Dash 3G, I'm looking at $100 more for the phone and the $240 for my corp email sync plus non-3G network. I am not sure if the Dash 3G is worth $340 more over the next year. I'm going to think about it this week but I'm still up in the air.
modding the dash 3g
Does anyone know if you can mod out a dash 3g for instance can you port android to it? I'm interested in buying one but I'm not a winmo fan and I'm on a rooted g1 so I would at least like to be able to mod it out if possible
I tried Dash 3G at corp store
tethering works 100% out of the box, and under 3 modes

bt DUN
bt PAN
once I figured out how to add Trad Chinese support, I'll buy it

Anyone on Tmobile

Hello everyone. I have a dell streak aws version. I am interested in getting a galaxy note. I want to know how many have one on the US T-Mobile network. I understand that I am not going to get 3g or 4g speed but is everything else work like text and edge..
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Currently using the Note on T-mobile. Previously, I had the 5GB smartphone plan on the HTC Sensation and kept it when I switched over to the Galaxy Note, but found the Edge speeds slow (100-200kbps download). Things like email, text messaging, weather updating, and the XDA app worked OK, but MMS messaging and more complex web sites were simply too slow to load and the wait time was too annoying. So, following the suggestion from another XDA member, I purchased the tmobile Sonic hotspot- size of a small flip phone- and paired it with the Note via wifi. So far have been getting between 3-5mbps around Miami and have been happy with the results as things load pretty quickly. Even with wifi on for most of the day, my Note lasts me all day and the battery life on the sonic hotspot gives me about 4hrs of continuous internet access, which is enough for when I'm out during the day. I thought about getting the smaller and thinner tmobile 4g hotspot, but ended up choosing the Sonic due to the fact that it has the N wireless band and can download up to speeds of 42.2mbps (highest I ever got was 9 mbps in Providence). After a few weeks of carrying the hotspot in my pocket, I sometimes forget that it's there except on the few occasions when it gets warm after long-use.
If you're going to use the Note for web browsing, streaming or receive and send a lot of MMS, I definitely recommend that you consider this option as Edge is simply too slow for this. If you're going to use the Note for occasional browsing, simple texting, and to check email, I guess that Edge is fine. I got the Sonic hotspot device for free via wirefly and the monthly charge is $39.99 for a 5GB plan (I reduced my smartphone plan to the $10.00 200mb plan) so in the end I ended up paying about $20.00 more a month than before. I travel a lot so I can justify the hotspot purchase as it enables me to connect to my IPAD and notebook when I'm on the road.
Hope this helps.
Thanks that helps alot. I really am considering this device. I love my dell streak but the note is calling me.....

Interesting. Wasn't there a slower hotspot for like $20 a month with like a 2GB speed cap?
I've been contemplating going for the free mobile hotspot as well but I'm just thinking how bad it would be to have yet ANOTHER electronic device with a battery that I have to worry about. Lawl.

You could also get the AT&T Elevate hotspot as well and take advantage of LTE at $50 a month too (pay-as-you-go), if that's your thing.

Lawl. $50 a month PLUS the cost of the phone? Screw that crap. Lawl. That's 600 PLUS taxes in 12 months PLUS the original 650 for the phone.
I also use a Sonic hotspot with my Note, and T-Mo is pretty fast around most of NYC. The battery life is also pretty good (approaches 8 hours). I usually don't carry it to work, but it's small and easy to throw into a pocket.
The edge speeds are pretty awful and vary wildly, as you can see below. But it works for basic tasks and checking email. But my Sonic is usually for long-connect and streaming, and I use the LTE hotspot on my Stratosphere, and VZ's LTE is pretty excellent in our market.
Hopefully the bounty efforts to open the 1700-band will be fruitful. Sections in the pic are VZ LTE hotspot, then TMO hotspot, and then G-Note all by its lonesome.

I have tmobile too on my galaxy note and i too get edge speeds but there was a post on tmobile support that we may be able to use 4g by rooting and flashing. Can anyone confirm this?
Tmo really needs to release gnote. Would be my dream to have the gnote on $30 monthly4G!
I have t mobile. Getting about 800Kb/s download. Thinking about switching to att GoPhone plan; it's $50 unlimited everything with 2-5 mb/s speeds.

I have tmobile. It's fine for me since I'm on wifi 90% of the time and use pre downloaded GPs maps.
