Does my Hermes runs faster, when... - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Does my Hermes runs faster, when I install "System-Progs" on storage like:
- Adobe Reader
- SPB PocketPlus, SPB Diary etc.
- SKTools
- RescoExplorer
- XnView
I normaly install such kind of programs on my internal HD, not on my microSD!
I thought that I browse faster thru files and folder with RescoExplorer when it's installed to main.
Same for XnView...
Also that SPB PocketPlus opens faster the register etc...
But is it true? I never tested it...
Maybe programs runs faster by installing it on microSD...
You know about it?
cheers

IMO its better to have the applications on the storage card instead of the phone. This frees up more program memory and system memory since its shared between the two.
If anything the prograns run slower off the card, but you would be able to have more open programs at once.

Storage vs Main Memory
Well... for me, I'll put some applications on my Main memory so I can use different storage card with those applications, ie. media player or file explorer or reader, etc.
There are some slow microSD card, so if you have them you might to consider to put them on main memory.

yup exactly,
i run spb pocket plus and sbsh weather on main memory. had issues with it corrupting the card previously.
also tomtom i run in main memory with the maps on the card itself.

Yep, internal memory speeds up the application. But this slows down the phone. Open a couple of apps on you're device. When they are running they use memory. So if you instal a clean "light" version WM6 on you're device it is quicker then when you use a full version. Then it is depending on open apps if the device gets slow!

Rodger rodger...
Thank you very much for all of your tipps

Encrypting Porn

I obviously am sensative as to who while looking my XDA over could accidentally find my porn stash.
What software package is best for encrypting movie files and pics?
resco explorer come with a built in encrypt file software.
Or Airscanner Encrypter to encrypt whole folders easily.
perhaps make the folder "hidden" then take the view hidden files function away so that the general browser doesnt find it.
i also apply a name that will not attract attention such as work or parents .... or system or temp cache or similar, anything but say porn xxx look here
then again, dont be ashamed of your actions, or dont do the actions....
nothing wrong with a bit or even a lot of porn
if it offends people, they shouldnt be looking, and even if they found it, they should choose not to look
This image always comes to mind:

I find that merely zipping the folder and putting it somewhere obfuscated prevents accidental clicks. But airscanner looks cool. Will have to try it out.

Anyone tried AirScanner yet? (blatant attempt to bring back on topic!)

I actually use Airscanner for er..... encrypting stuff that.....er I'd rather wasn't....... er easy to find. <coughs>
I can vouch it works well under WM5, and it appears to work by using multi-pass bitwiping to ensure there is no trace of the original files prior to encyption.
Odd thing is though, I'm sure it used to be free, but now they seem to charge for it. My advice is look at free download sites for a copy.
Not sure where the software came from, but my press and hold menus provide encryption, I think its resco explorer.
I can use normal file explorer to "hide" files from general view, but I noticed in Resco explorer, the hidden files are still clearly visible, so not sure if there is a bug in the resco app for hidden files, but they are definitely hidden from the normal ppc file explorer. add that to resco encryption, I think should be sufficient.
Good (and bad) news - looks like we won't be needing this software anyway:

There is a program called KeePass which works on most devices, relevant here is the Desktop and PocketPC. The datafiles are transferable between both devices. I have used it on my Universal without problems. I have actually been using this program for a long time, I keep the DB on a USB key and a copy of the program. This means that when I plug in my key the password safe opens and asks for the password, or I can run it from the key if on another machine.
As for encrypting the pr0n, what about a good old .RAR archive? The version that I use (Pocket RAR 3.50) will encrypt and decrypt folders and files, quite fast too.
If you're talking about a large stash this won't work, but if you're only carrying round < 10MB you could always use the ExtendedROM partition and leave it hidden.
This means that you could have all your files in readable format, but without knowing the name that you used for the partition they couldn't access it without searching the registry for the name.
Not many people are going to search the registry for a name they don't even know exists.
This might sound like a difficult thing to do, but Buzz made an unlocker and the registry change for the name is in the thread.
Once you have done your hard reset and loaded the ExtendedROM you don't need the stuff in there anymore, and can use the space for storage.
"stash"
I agree, I know "people" that use a zip file for text, and otherwise just buried folders.
How's abouts we make a small app to render files unusable? You could take the filename, pre-pend it to the file in binary to render it unusable, using a simple XOR encryption for those few bytes. Then give it a generic filename and extension, eg Sheet1.prn.
When launched, .prn files will launch our decrypter, asking for the password. I suppose you could possibly memory map the decrypted file to even ensure an unencrypted version doesn't exist on the device for any considerable period (ie until you close the decrypter).
just an idea.

Sounds good V,
When can we expect VJPhorEnsic to first arrive on the board ;-)

Seems about right to me. If you don't use the OEM Voice dial, you can remove the sddaemon shortcut from your startup folder. There's a known bug with it anyways when it creates duplicate notification on a soft reset.
You can also remove poutlook. I have taken that shortcut out of every PPC I have owned (going way back) with no ill effects.
i appreciate the response
looks right to me. I have spb diary, spb power plus, weather, and Resco File Explorer & Registry editor installed. I have also re-assigned my IE cache, history and cookies to my miniSD card. spb is installed on the card as well, and finally my email (synced email, not sms and mms as i can't figure out if you can move these) on the miniSD card. I have a little over 36MB free storage on main memory and typically 18-22MB free in program memory. no mem maid running.
Hi

This is what I've been looking for...I have the T-mobile USA MDA....I think I have some memory leak issues.
I have in Main Memory:
Agenda Fusion
SPB Diary
SPB Backup
Pocket Weather
MS Voice Command
MemMaid
WisbarAdvanced2
I have about 16mb main memory left and it bounces all over the place one minute 16, 10 minutes later 8mb then 10 meinutes later 12mb (I have run MemMaid to see running processes and there is nothing there...maybe bad install?)
Storage is at 12mb.
I don't think this is right. But this is my first PPC so I'm not sure if someone could help me out here I would appreciate it.
I am tempted to hard reset and not use customized Ext Rom, but there are some things I do want, but after looking at the EXT Rom file, I haven't a clue what is what and if I really need it.
thanks

I have total commander installed on my miniSD. My program memory remaining after a reset is about 17MB. After running a few hours, and closing all apps, it drops to about 10.5 MB and stays around there. Any ideas as to what may be happening? I have a few tweaks in place, but nothing overboard. After removing all cache tweaks the most I have had remaining is 19 MB. I have no idea where all this memory is going. Any ideas?
Ok I'll ask the obvious question...
Why do you all care so much about having xxx memory remaining?? How does it help you to have 12MB of RAM sitting there not being used...does it make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside??
This stuff always cracks me up - as long as you are not running out of memory what do you care how much memory you are using. Sitting on top of 19MB of free RAM is not doing anybody any good.
I've used my Cingular 8125 and at times the available memory went down to around 4MB!!! That's right...scary stuff but guess what, nothing crashed, everything worked smoothly and later on it was back up to around 8-9mb.
Like I said, as long as you are not running out of memory what does it really matter?

ahh, because...
with 10 MB left, I can't run minimo without running out of memory as it uses at least 10 on this thing. Clear enough answer?

New Universal's Challenger

Has anyone come across any news about this Samsung SPH-P9000. Have a look here http://www.i4u.com/article7155.html I think it'll definitely rock the market
It looks nice, but too easy to break for me. The folding keyboard just makes it prone to breaks. They should have stuck with a laptop design or a similar design to the IMate KJam where the keyboard slides out, with an ability to use a wireless or BT full size or folding keyboard. Better yet the BT Virtrual Keyboards.
1.3MP Camera, there are phones already out with better MPs. Plus the price is definitely higher. I think this would flop.

there's probably a 2Gb micro sd card in the slot
there is also no MB behind the numbers. I think they've used some reg hack or program to include storage card size

Nope. There is no 'reghack' to do that
And the flame will have 2GB ROM, but, unlike universal, it will come with micro sd instead
While the storage on this is fantastic I think to what techtalkonline is referring to is program memory. So far I have heard that the 64MB is the limit what WM5 can address and use. This sounds logical because so far there is not a single WM5 device in the market with a program memory above 64MB. However if the picture is correct it sounds too good to be true.
By the way when I say that the 64MB is the limit what WM5 can address I am not referring to the older devices which have been retrofitted with WM5

Yep, the picture clearly shows it as the "Main" memory figures tab as active. I agree that it could be a hacked reading, but sure hope not! Regarding the 64MB limit, i think by the time this device hits the shelves, it will hopefully have WM6 as the OS? I am not sure of the memory limits of WM6 over WM5's 64MB?
How is this a replacement for Universal without a keyboard? The whole point of having a Universal is the keyboard.
Seems more like a replacement for Wizard or TyTn.
No keyboard?
Well, yes, it does "lack" a keyboard-but I didn't buy my Exec for the keyboard, rather for all else it offered.
I suspect there are a lot of owners who'd agree.
As a tradeoff, you get :-
Intel Xscale(R) PXA 270 processor at 520 Mhz.
- 2.0 Mega Pixel camera (not interpolated)
- NVIDIA(R) GoForce(R) 5500 GPU
-Wireless LAN 802.11b+g
- SRS Mobile HD surround sound
- USB On-The-Go
- 2 GB Flash ROM + 64 MB RAM
- TV out connector
- 3G
- Built-in FM tuner
- Business card reader (through camera)
- dock with stereo speakers (at least in promo pics)
And, without the keyboard, you get a far more hand- and pocket-friendly device.
Now, if they added GPS to this puppy ...
I got agree: I would prefer to have a keyboard as well. Really does make a better all round device.
If you go to PPCthoughts, it is clearly written there that it has 128mb of ram(instead of 64mb)

thanks for your help so far you are great , keep up the great work ..
Welcome to the forum!
Don't worry about your English level, many of us here including my self are not native English speakers. (I owe a lot to the spell checker!)
Please make sure you read the WiKi and search the forums before asking. The answers are likely to be there already waiting for you.
Now to your questions:
1) No, currently there are no real viruses for Windows Mobile and though scanners exist they are way to heavy for a device with 200MHz processor.
2) Minimo (mozilla) has tabs but it is a very slow browser. You should check out NetFront and PIE Plus. Opera is good but their free Java version sends all your browsing information and your phone number back to the company so its kind of like spyware.
3) Not sure about IE but it should work with the built in outlook using POP3. There are some threads here about it.
4) The SD speed makes no difference in the phone because of the OS and the slow BUS.
5) There is a free program called OMAPCLOCK which can overclock the Prophet, but when you go to standby the CPU resets it self. There is another freeware (sorry don't remember the name) that can restart OMAPCLOCK when you turn on the device.
Note that the speed and stability with which you can run varies from device to device.
Unfortunately, I don't have answers for 6 and 7.

thanks super , iam sorrt for all my stupid quistions ,
i just got another one (qustion)
i want to buy a new 4gb sd (or 4 gb mmc) card but would ui need to do , do i stuuf it into my otek immditley or do i stuuf it into my pc and put music ont it , do do i need to format it fist ???
i dont want to screw up my sd card or my prophet
does this sd kaart works with the prophet (page is in dutch.SD tranced 4gb
or this one SD tranced 4 gb 150 X or this mmc card
a 4GB tranced MMC PLUS card .
my prefer is the trancend normal 4 gb SD card
or do the all work ..
There is no need to format SD cards before use, though if you want to do so its ok too.
You can use it in your phone right away, but copying files through ActiveSync is slow so if you have a card reader I recommend you use that to copy your music and any other files bigger than 10MB simply because it will save you a lot of time.
I couldn't quite read the language on the sites you provided, but as long as the card is not SDHC (High Capacity - new format) it will work with your Prophet. Some 4GB cards are SDHC and some are regular SD (all cards larger than 4GB are SDHC).
You should check with the sit to make sure it is regular SD.
oke thanks , the pages were in dutch .

sorry i was busy at work last day
there is like a thousand of empty folders in the SD card and there is too many .tmp files
i tried to use SD card file recovery but the result was Zero
it's weird that the SD card is 8GB and there is just 5.6GB free space with empty folders and there is no hidden files
should i format the SD card ?
***EDIT***
i found something interesting ( wp_ss_201307011_0001.tmp )
now how to change the extension to jpg
***EDIT*** (2)
what a shame
upload the files...
Check the partitions in disk managment, might have one hidden.
I have confermed real seen pictures of gdr3 and this is not gdr3 microsofts mobile os is amed at hardwhare spects and the gdr3 update is no different most wont beabele to take advantage of the gdr3 updates other then the notifications.
when it does hit there will be a new kid in town wp8.1 device in full hd 1920x1080 rez.
if that was gdr3 the tiles would not look like that.
WP8.1 branch. (Maybe!)

Yea and nobody has a funny feeling about these things??????
Those things are always found by ones who are "Phone minded" and by "coincidence" members of a cociety.
Never by a child, or a housewife, or ................. Always found by a "geek".
Why on earth should someone put a picture on a sd card, specialy those guys who forces anyone else in the cloud.
And Always a picture, never ever some specific documents, no names or familypics just one single "mysterious" picture.
Lousy security or stupid people at work................yea sure
I belief its a sneaky act of commercial, just to make people curious and eager to buy

All non-public Windows pre-release builds have that watermark on desktop.

maybe millions of housewives or children find thousands of these pictures everyday. But since they are not "geek" to them it's just a stupid photo of a phone. It requires a geek to see the details etc.
yeah, it happens a lot lately,
lost sd cards/usb sticks, hell even complete unlocked prototype cell phones.
And if i red of the sanctions, they are even bigger fools then they already wore.
Taking sneaky pictures.
Taking it outside
And for the final touch .....losing it.
Those offenders should not getting fired,
they should be getting shot at dawn.
just too many coincidences
But thats my opinion.

if you don't know how to change the extensions just please upload the files .. don't write anything on that SD card.
if the "memory" is really what most people believes to, then it might have a partition for WP 8.1
the new tiles layout matches vs GDR3 (notifications tile asterisk means a new message) and consolidated message center with Skype embedded
should be worth trying to recover the partition (some mfg use a microsd for internal storage) partition for system and rest for user available space (disregard having an additional slot)
P.S. is a MicroSD or just an SD?
WP8 devices are not using SD cards as internal storage. There were some WP7 devices that did but those activated the security features on the card so when it was removed from the device the only way to get the card usable again was formatting it (which deactivated the SD security feature). It's therefore highly unlikely that there is a system partition on a WP8 device's SD card.
