Blimkeys - an SMS-like text-input method software

Blimkeys is a standard Software Input Panel for PocketPC 2002 and WM2003 based PDA-s.
You can input text to your PDA like write SMS on a regular cellphone.
This method is quite fast, and you can use it one hand.

Hi, this is great idea as I'm looking for this type application for past 1 year. But, the file unable to load.

Hmm, maybe I uploaded the wrong file? I made it late time. Maybe I uploaded the emulator's version. It's not for ARM CPU but for x86.
One moment, and I grab the dll from my XDA and change the uploaded file.

a couple of quick comments...
1. I find the time for double and tripple clicks is too short.
2. Would be great if it had predictive text capabilities

ok it worked this time, seems to be a nice app.
i suggest that T9 type input as an option would be a good idea, with cutom dictionary which can remember new words.

Good suggestions.
- Yes, timedelay will be configuralble. As I remember, now it is 400ms.
- Of course, I planed to integrate predictive input. (With an independent dictionary from MS) This time I don't know, how to make that, but it will be user editeable, or convertable-importable from/to txt or other simply file format. I like to support different languages.
My plan is:

I think backspace will be a horizontal line with the stylus right to left, and space will be a rhumb left to right, like in Letter Recognizer. Or let the rhumbs will be the cursor move keys? And how to implement the enter key?

I think that it could be very usefull. It is what I need.
I've tried to use it in the default SMS client and I dont' know why in the field to find the contact you can not write other letters than the first (for example you can not write the letter b, but only a).
In any case I think that you made an eccelent work.
I hope you will go further with this wonderfull piece of software.

Did you mean:
Start to write a new (SMS type) message, in the Inbox application, and you can't type corectly tha "To:" field?
I tried this. This is worked me fine, as in other windows. The delay time, while you switch a->b->c is quite short. Maybe this was the reason to you.
I also tryed the find contact window, and it works.
Did you know? When you press the Contact HW button, and start typeing, you immediatly type to the "find contact" box. To click in it, before typeing is not neccesarry ;-)

Sallala, can you position the buttons just like that of a regular cell phone? and place the letters according to those of a regular cell phone? this way, it will be easier to switch from cellphone to xda and vice versa. you may follow the interface of WM2003's phone interface. i find it already comfortable dialling with one hand. what do you think?

Urosh suggest this layout, and I think it's good.
The buttons are enough big to typing one finger, and it's size the same as the other input methods.
The normal GSM phone keboard have four row. That's mean, if I change the layout to your suggestion the panel height will be twice.
Let's take a look for example pocket excel! If the keyboard height is twice, and it is open, you can view only 4-5 rows from the excel sheet, because there is a formatting tab and a satuts bar too in excel.
But of course, typing maybe easyer on a bigger keyboard. And I know, peepole like the conventional methods.
So this is not a wrong idea, but I like to finish this layout first, and after, let's go back here! I think it is not a big work, to transform the layout.

i forgot the software you're developing is an Input Method and not a regular sms software. if this were a regular sms software, then i would strongly suggest to stick with a regular phone's layout.

For the cursors is it possible to use the 5 way HW pad? It could be the best solution.
For backspace it could be that you have to press any button for 1 second.
I think also that you can make two more buttons on the right (where now you have three buttons that doesn't work). In this manner you can make the last position (for example the first button abc1) for the numbers. The last two buttons should have also spacebar and other 5 or 6 characters (for example [email protected]? ecc. or what we need most).
What do you think?

I forgot another thing.
It could be better if you implement a sound ("bip") or something like this when you tap. It is better to hear the tapping to know how many times you tap.

New! BETA!! Thumb Friendly Reminders and More!

It only works on the English WM2003 Rom, and QVGA only (for now)
Backup your system and give it a go, it can't do anything dangerous, worst case just soft reset. But backup just in case :wink:
Ok, as of writing WM2005 might be out on Magician, so I'm distracted.
But, this is a minor advancement of a proof of concept I put up here.
This version has a major improvement. Read and see...
On loading up, you will see some tiny dots in the top left. It can't be moved for now, and you can't change the image for now (you can use a resource hacker if you want)

In normal use it does nothing. If the dots are active they will show the current time and Battery level.
Clicking on the dots will bring up your New Bar - the bar that is normally at the bottom of your Today screen! This means that you can access the New menu or bluetooth or activesync etc from your normal screen. Click it again to go back to your Start Bar. This hack is particularly useful will my TodayToggle program.
Ok: clicking and holding on the dots will bring up a menu. There's only one active option - Reminders.
Don't you hate it when reminders pop up and block you doing anything else? You don't want to snooze it, you just want to go back to betaplayer etc? Click on the option "Reminders" and the current active reminder will be "ghosted" (it won't do anything until there's a reminder on screen)
The reminders will not now bother you. However, to bring the reminders back up, choose the "reminders" option from the menu again, and it will come back up! Note the little alarm icon in the New Bar? That shows that you've got outstanding reminders.
Finally: piece de resistance
Reminders eh? Why where all the buttons so small? You have to take your stylus out just to click "Dismiss"? Who designed this thing? :roll:
So:
There's a slight delay before the buttons are changed, but hopefully it makes sense. BTW - "All!" means dismiss all. I couldn't fit anything else in
So, whadya think?
This is beta. There's more to add to this program, but I hope it's useful.
Note: it's likely to have some minor CPU usage. If you don't want it, don't use it.

Could you make it so the close button is not there ? (The cross on the top-right when its active)
You could then close by clicking on the 'dots' and selecting,.. say EXIT, or shutdown option.
Also, when closing down, maybe restoring the New menu ??

I know the snooze button relates to the Snooze combo but, to me, the large buttons should be the All and Snooze, with the Dismiss being the small (or perhaps equal) size - better for hitting in the half light. The large ones should be at the bottom left and right for similar reasons (easier to hit).

On my S100 with french rom it didn't work very well !
When i load hidestart i can see the time and battery indicators but the dots aren't there !
I've also tried a reminder and the buttons are not changed ! If your hack works like Mamaich hack for the phonedialer it doesn't work maybe because the title of the reminder window is different between roms ( "reminder" in the english rom but "rappel" in the french rom ).
It's just an idea ..

Switchcorp - good point, this is all English right now; I'll update the first post to indicate. If you send me the name of the "Reminder" window, and the exact text on Dismiss, Dismiss All, Snooze (button) and "Snooze:" text I'll try to update it, although probably not before my holiday
I don't understand why you can't see the dots. Did you try launching it again? If you "lose" it, you have to close it with Settings > System > Memory.
Are you using anything like Wisbar etc?
jimbo123 - when closing down it should restore the new menu to it's original state I hope. Please indicate if it doesn't.
I'm going to work on putting a "close" icon on the reminder itself, so instead of having to go to the Menu > Reminders option, there'll automatically be a "close" button to press and hide the reminders. But I got tired last night, so had to leave it!
mtbsoft - I understand about the buttons, and I'll happily reconfigure them, but remember that the All button is only shown if there's more than one reminder active, so you'll only have the Snooze and Dismiss buttons with <2 reminders. The reminder text box can't be made wider because the blue highlight is hardcoded to that width, so I don't have much space to play with

I've tried again by redownloading hidestart ... i see the dots but after the "new bar" moves i've a bug on the bottow of my screen and hidestart is crashed !
I've soft reseted but i can't see the dots anymore ... it's very strange

I don't quite understand about the bug and the crash. Don't use it on your ROM for now, it can't do anything useful (I think the hiding startbar feature also uses English names, I don't have the code in front of me right now).
General:
Are you using anything like Wisbar?
This interface is only very temporary. The functionality will go into another program I'm writing, but I thought the Reminder button hack was useful so put it out now. The dots work well on my colour theme and the position is convenient....

I've forgot to say that i don't use any soft like wisbar !
The only hack that i've done is the time under the date ( instead of the time only ).
Soft i use : Phonealarm, Alarm Today, Phone dashboard and PHM tray lauch and SPB Pocket plus.
Only those are active !

Hidestart is a good companion of the microsoft voice command i think For me it is very usefull
I'll wait that it works with the french roms !
I've tried to desactivate all my today plugins but it doesn't change anything

Today plugins won't make any difference, i'm sure it's the way I find the windows using the English names... I'll have to find french rom for the emulator I think...
I've got a nice Today Plugin I'm making. Some will find it useful. But i've no time to release it right now :wink: Soon.

Guys, I've just noticed a bug on my version (I'm using a different version to the one released here). Can you try writing something using the soft keyboard, eg editing a schedule or something, for longer then 5 seconds.
Does it work correctly? On mine HideStart is stealing focus, ie stopping you writing after a couple of seconds. Feedback if possible please!

I also, like full screen and am using your toggle Today program. the HideStart didn’t work in my JAM (Arabic Windows)
I would suggest auto hide for both Start Bar and new Bar after a few second
in today screen and when there is any activity like new message, missed call
or so, the Start Bar only will show up till you clear it then it goes back to hide
again. I think this will be very nice. I assigned Start Menu to one of the Hard
Button and would be nice to have both start Bar and New Bar to show up
when pressing this Hard button!!!
Do you mind spreading your programs in other forum and mention your
name and post???

You should be aware that Hidestart seems to cause a minor problem for me; I use a different version to the one here, so maybe that's the problem, but it seems to take focus while you're typing a message or something after a few seconds. Now one else mentioned this, so as I said, this release is just an idea and if it works for you, great! Please post here and say it works fine. But if not, please indicate here so I can look into it when I get back.
TodayToggle (the latest one) toggle start bar and new bar at the same time using one program. HideStart is English only for now - you'll have to get me the same info supplied by Switchcorp (ie arabic names).

All sorts of problems with this, I'm afraid.
I can launch it ok and the dots appear, I tap them and the new bar moves up to the top... and that's it - no more functionality. I'm using Pocket Plus and think the close/minimise function might be interferring with it. It is still running but I can't do anything with it.
Assuming I can get it working, I'd like to suggest a couple of other changes...
Make the time and battery display optional, I have them visible via other methods and would prefer to see 'Start'.
Make the application 'invisible' to task lists such as Pocket Plus, SmallMenuPlus and RunningPrograms - I think this is part of the problems I'm suffering, it is an application and not a process.
I'll keep trying different combinations to see if I can get it working (and identify why/how).

ContactManager is no more developped, please use the new native version. You can get more information here

What it does:
- "classic" finger scrolling
- tapping the contact make appear a screen with contact info (photo, name, phone, sms and mail). Selecting one option launch the default compose dialog or make the call. You can also change the contact picture from the detail directly.
- display contact photo if present (in the list and the contact detail).
What's different:
- if you press you finger on the left or right border of the screen it will allow you to select the letter you're searching for, release the finger, it will show you the contact starting with this letter. For me that's the way to go in touch interface: release should trigger the event, push should only provide visual feedback, I'd like a visual kb like this.
- the contact detail is not the standard one, you can show only the information you want (and it's animated .
- the list is animated (scrolling) and the transition between list and detail also.
Settings file:
There is an .ini file that you can create in the directory where the program reside. It contains color, font and image settings. See the setting.ini provided in the zip file.
To install, copy the unzipped file to your ppc and run it. Should be enough. Tested on WM6 only, apparently it also run on WM5. Sorry for 2003 owner, as I don't have such device, I'm unable to test.
Please inform me, before publishing this app on any other website... (a mail to qpouplard // gmail.com will be enough). I'm not against it at all, but I'd like to know it.

btw some things to adjust :
- scroll isn't very good yet
- left index is too much on the left (

Guybrush, can you elaborate what's wrong about scrolling (I mean I agree with you, but on the other side, I have a smartphone for 5 days now... I don't have lot of experience about what's "good" or "bad").
You want left index to be longer? for now it's 26 pixels, maybe 30 will do the job?
Related to the ugliness or character, can you post a screenshot? I only have an HTC touch to test (and the emulator).

that's a screen as appear on my device... about left index look screenshot of my SSContact, i think it's good like that... Scrolling is slow... and not fluid... don't give me good feelings.

I've have a little problem, I can call using the Call button, but the send Sms button doing nothing ....

Very nice work,it looks good by adding contact photo and the idea of side contact to call or to send SMS.
The alpha.index is working but as the application is to be used by finger so it is very difficult to use this index by finger.
Second thing is the scrolling is heavy not fluid,the best i think to scroll is icontact of Larna ,it scrolls very nice.
So keep it up and we all wait for another release with fixed bugs.

For the alpha index, my idea was exactly to make it usable by finger: its very hard to point to the right letter, but it's rather easy to move your finger to the right position, so the idea is: tap anywhere on left (or right) part of the screen, and move your finger until you're on the right letter, then remove the finger, that's it. That's also why you get a visual feedback (ugly for now, will look better soon).

Wow this looks promising! Good work! Here are my thoughts:
Like MyRIGHT said, I feel the scrolling in larna's icontact is perfect, so if you could get that kind of feel it would be great!
For now though the biggest thing bugging me is the way it sorts the names, File As always seems the prefered way (again like in larna's icontact). If you could fix this I would definitaly use this instead of icontacts!
Good job on the abc index too, maybe you can make the "area" on the right hand side of the screen a little wider (thumb width )
Maybe you could also make the letter that shows up in the middle of the screen more obvious (coloured background or so).
I like how you can you use the virtual keyboard to jump to the first letter!
I LOVE the way the screen slides to the left when you click on a name. It's a lot faster than waiting for the "default" screen to show up too! Maybe the screen that comes in can look a little better like you said though.
The bottom buttons (search and new) don't seem to do anything, but maybe you havent gotten around to that yet. Maybe you could have the app fullscreen and have 4 buttons at the bottom which launch speed dial, call history, the keypad and new contact or so ?
It's also interesting how the d-pad always scrolls all the way to the top of the list no matter what button you press

My apologies, the SMS send button work fine, it's just take a while to load up. . With my Hermes and WM6 - I like the speed of scrolling it's just feel right - ( just like larna's icontact) .
I've to agreed with others, the A_Z index is so tiny, may be if it can be triggered wih another screen A_Z ( more like the contact detail but appear from the left side this will make finger buttom easier).

It's very very nice, but it can't be displayedcorrect om a htc universal (vga screen). If you could make a vga layout it would be perfect...

I think if the scrolling spped and a few graphics were added it would be great! i am a graphics artest, tell me the size and format of the images for things like the letters on the side and i can cook somthing up for u

For now I don't use image, only drawing text, however I'd like to have:
- A correct layout for contact detail (I can extract something from a mockup, for instance, you draw a beautiful sample for a given contact, and I'll try to integrate it).
- An image for the preview letter from the A_Z, something like a bubble pointing to the letter.
Regarding the size, the A_Z is 10*320, each contact is 220 * 32. For the contact detail, it just has to fill the screen.
Apparently it maybe great to think about VGA devices, I don't have one, but I suppose I can use the emulator (however, I fear performance would suffer).

Great and useful App ! it run smoothly and scrolling speed is acceptable on my Hermes with WM6. Only 3 things i noticed that need enhancement:
1) contactmanager can't be minimized with the 'ok' button on Hermes, closing it tapping the 'X' works.
2) If the contact saved phone number in 'work tel', it wouldn't be displayed with your contactmanager (list and detail)
3) the 'new' and 'search' softkey is not responding ?
btw, scrolling at the border for first letter is really useful UI

Regarding work tel, I added work tel to the list of phone number he tries to find, but I really should handle various phone number.
For the new and search, I just put them "for testing", they do nothing... but my question is: what button would be actually usefull?

It has a 'OK' button (most PPC phone has this button) to minimise the app (running in memory but hidden from the screen) instead of closing, it would be good if contactmanager can be minimised.
maybe a Exit softkey button would be useful instead of 'search'

Now see I like the scrolling MUCH better in this than iContact. It might be able to slow down a bit slower but the speed that it maxes out at is good. In iContact, sometimes when I scroll it goes too fast or straight to the bottom of the contact list. That is pretty fast given that I have 100 contacts.
My only issue is that there is only one number shown (which you pointed out), and that the search and new buttons are not functional. This is a big pain with the iContact app... no ability to add a new one. I am on the CUSTEL Ultimate WM6 ROM. This is a great foundation for a contacts app!

But I've no idea if my app works on a Treo.

There is also some funkiness going on with the scroll wheel on the 8525. If you move it the contact goes straight to A and then the screen is unresponsive for a bit to finger scrolling.

[03/07/08] FSD - Full Screen Dialer (0.27.02)

PLEASE DO NOT DISTRIBUTE THIS SOFTWARE WITHOUT ASKING MY CONSENT!
After seeing a request for a large button dialer in the Prophet forums, I decided to try to develop a solution my self...
What does it do/not do?
FSD is a more finger friendly dial pad than the WM default one.
FSD is skinable.
FSD does not have any speed dial/redial or anything more complicated than basic number entry.
FSD is a full screen dialer!
FSD will run on WM5/6 or WM2003 devices with .NET CF 2.0.
FSD uses the default dial pad once the call has been started.
Call/End hardware buttons do not work within FSD!
Pressing the call button with no number loads iContact
Pressing the end button with no number quits the app.
Skinning from anywhere!

Notes
FSD may have bugs etc, but I will try to iron them out.
FSD supports MoDaCo AppToDate, but the place I would host the files is down ATM...
The WM2003 cab is untested!
To change the skin folder, change the string "skin" in"HKCU\\Software\\L3v5y\\FSD" to whatever the name of the folder is and place that folder into the Dialer folder on your device. For folders located within the installation directory, put the name of the folder. For ones stored anywhere else, put the full path name (e.g. \Storage Card\FSD\Skin).
To change whether the app exits on a call: change the value of ExitOnCall (under HKLM\Software\l3v5y\FSD) is set to 1, the app will exit on a call/when the contacts app is opened.
Bugs/Issues
WM2003 cab not working well.
Hardware button mapping not great...
Change log:
0.25 fixes all known bugs!
0.24 adds some basic configuration options (click on the number display area).
0.23 now draws the number text on screen allowing for backgrounds! (Text is no longer in an text box).
0.21.02 has some bug fixes.
0.21 adds a "ExitOnCall" option. If the value of ExitOnCall (under HKLM\Software\l3v5y\FSD) is set to 1, the app will exit on a call/when the contacts app is opened.
0.20.02 has some bug fixes.
0.20 also uses windows default contact manager rather than iContact (EDITABLE).
0.20 adds selecatability of "silent" to show or supress error messages. Edit under HKLM\Software\l3v5y\FSD using the "Silent" parameter. 0 is off, 1 is on. Default is 0.
0.19.01 fixes a bug!
0.19 now changes the font size if the text string is longer than 10 digits long! (credit to lamandrion for the idea!)
0.18 adds choice of contacts app. (Change path under HKCU\Software\l3v5y\FSD using the contacts and contactsparm strings. If the paths start with "\", the path is assumed to be a full path, if it starts with anything else, it is assumed to be a local path to the FSD.exe file).
0.17 has better key mapping (left softkey does same as on screen call button, right softkey does same as on screen end button).
0.16 has some basic VGA support.
0.15.01 allows for skinning using any folder.
0.14.07 double click on backspace now removes last two numbers
0.14.06 changes hardware mapping (now the center button works...)
0.14.05 updates the XML file for AppToDate support

Because of AppToDate support, it's easier for me to roll out updates by updating the cab linked above than uploading to this post.
Skinning:
Each skin consists of numerous files. Each number has two files, a normal image and a pressed image, as do all other buttons. The background image, only has one state, so only one image.
The number images and the call/end images are 80px by 60px for QVGA and 160px by 120px for VGA, although either size can be used as the images are scaled to fit.
The backspace arrow is 80px by 80px for QVGA and 160px by 160px for VGA, but, again the image can be either size as it is scaled.
The background is only shown in the top right behind the number. No transparency is used in the text, so the background image at this point should be white. The background can be 240x320 or 480x640.
All images should be *.jpg files.
The naming is as follows:
Unpressed numbers are named in single digit form e.g. the image for one is "1.jpg".
Pressed numbers are named in single digit form with press added on e.g. one is "1press.jpg".
The call key is "call.jpg" for normal, and "callpress.jpg" for pressed.
End is "end.jpg" for normal and "endpress.jpg" for pressed.
The background is "bkgd.jpg".
Backspace is "bkspc.jpg" normally and "bkspcpress.jpg" for the pressed image.
All the files should be placed in a single folder, and to apply the skin, the "skin" string under "HKCU\\Software\\L3v5y\\FSD" should be changed to whatever that folder is called.

If you press the green button with no number entered, it loads iContact, although I can change that. Pressing the end button with no number entered quits the app.

Two thinks that should be improved:
1.
When i dial a number there is some kind of notifcation bubble and there is the number i dialed. is it possible that this bubble shouldnt be shown?

I don't get this bubble on WM5/6, but I can't test WM2003
The -silent doesn't work for the dialer and causes my program to crash if I attempt to call it
As for hardware buttons, I shall work out how to handle/intercept the Call/End buttons. For the moment though, the center button will call and the up button will quit.
EDIT: there was a mistake in my code... Just retesting it!
EDIT2: adding the -silent parameter has no effect on my device (WM6.1) but may do something...

That is the WM default dialer. I haven't worked out how I can code something like that (yet)...

Kudo's l3v5y, now I've finally found a better dialskin than the PaulyA's. (And there's someone else in the world that has no need for a "smart dialer", ehehe)
I use smartskey and use the Right D-Pad to go to Contacts, Up for Speeddial, Down for History and Left for PIE and it works flawlessly! One bad ass One Handed Dialer, IMO!
I took the liberty of modifying your 3b cab and hardcoded those two files in, compressed and make it not prompt for install loction so as to work with UC, I could post it if you'd like. (I, as always, take absolutely no credit, this is YOUR work)

Go ahead and post it! I have no objections...
I haven't set the paths to be hard coded 'cause the paths are all relative, and I use AppToDate to install it anyway... Also I can't work out how to make Visual Studio do it :s
BTW, the latest version (the 0.15.02) has fewer issues than the others, so you may want to update the exe in your cab!

Yes, you can change all the colors and also change placements of different elements by modifying skin.xml file. It doesn't support using background bitmaps, but i'm planning to make that for nex release.

Actually you can use select image, because it use the same KlistControl code base. Just copy png bitmap to execution folder and name it as select.png. The dimensions must match the dimensions configured in the skin.xml. So, by default it's 228x40.

Few pointers if I may it starts kind of slow it takes about 4 seconds to open it on my kaiser. And the search engine is kind of not finger friendly it,s hard to select a letter with your thumb. I think that bigger letters would do the trick for example you could place half of the alphabet on the left side of the screen and the rest on the right side or introduce the search engine similar to the one present in IContacts.

The slow start time is mostly compact framework's fault, one idea is to let it run on background or switch to WIN32 api... but i did look up Icontact's source and felt it was not my kind of cookie But there's some tweaking that could be done. About the scroll touch, i find it quite good on my touch.
It helps to not really trying to hit right alphabet but instead follow what the on screen indexshower shows, and if it's wrong letter just slide your finger up or down. have to say that i'm not big fan of the idea dividing the alphabets but the Icontact alphabet's style could be an idea...
Btw. out of concept, but does anyone know any free coctail databases? Because i have done earlier a program that displays coctail recipes, but the database i use is something that i can't publish. firstly because i don't have authors permission and secondly because it's in Finnish It would perfect if database would be in XML format.

Well I think I've got too big thumbs While holding the phone in one hand I'm not able to access the alphabet with my thumb. I've tried pressing the alphabet area and then slide it up or down to choose a letter but I end up scrolling the list with applications up or down. So maybe widening the alphabet touch area would do the trick. Also I think that moving the indexshower to the upper or even upper right part of the screen would prevent it from being covered by a thumb while picking a letter.
I don't know any cocktail databases at least not free ones

Would it be possible to map it to the "all programs" soft key in TF3D?

Installed and tried it. A pgm which works great. Very handy as I do not have every programs set for my iFonz icons. I couple of suggestions:
1) To group pgm names by alphabet, something like iContact. When the scroll reaches a particular alphabet, the alphabet will appear in the middle, more like you're selecting from the left alphabet option.
2) A handy A to Z table like iContact rather than the alphabets tiny-ly arranged on the left.
I can live with the color but if there's skin to select, it will be prefect.

2) I'm going with tiny alphabets for now, but that would be nice option to add later versions, though i have to make whole new control for that.
The new version has the old color scheme and new white one, i would like i have some darker on like on scroll launcher also.. maybe some talented skinning artist in this forum could provide me that I'm not so talented with skin creating.

That's really great idea Anyone know, how to get path for todaywallpaper? I added background bitmap function to alphabet bar, but haven't yet tested it. I have also modifying the list control to support bg bitmaps... I think it would be in next version.
