I have just installed TomTom version 6 on my Vario II and i'm having real problems getting the software to detect my Leadtech GPS reciever. Ive paired the device in the bluetooth settings and set the ports used to connect but it just wont have it. I have a couple of other small but limited apps that detect the gps reciever no problem, what am i doing wrong?

Can we assume you have also used the Tomtom "configure" menu as well?

...pair the bluetooth GPS with your phone. tick the "serial port" box when it's pairing. In connections...bluetooth...com ports add an outgoing com port (mine's on COM7) for the GPS unit. Don't tick "secure connection".
I've also got an incoming com port on port 6, but I don't think this is required.
Start up TomTom, and go to preferences...gps setup. Select "other GPS" and when prompted, select the com port created previously.
If TomTom shows "No GPS device" when back on the main navigation screen, it's not seeing it. If it shows "Waiting for GPS signal" then it can see the GPS device, but it's just not got a GPS fix yet.
Hope this helps
Ric
Thanks for the replys guys, i have gone through all the steps mentioned and it just wont conect. The bluetooth light on the gps unit stays on as if its receiving informaton but it still says "No GPS device"
I i tap the screen where it says "no GPS device" i can see 7 pairs of letters and numbers which are all zero if i actully turn of the gps reciever.
In the section that asks what device i have there is a key and 0000 next to it but none of the other options have this.
*EDIT* i actually just had the device conected for about 30 seconds before it disconnected again
Is there any reason you didn't get the TomTom GPS unit? That just works 'out of the box' without any configuration.

The screen that shows the key and 0000 is the tomtom gps unit. You should use the arrows to go to "Other bluetooth GPS receiver".
If you have done this already let me know.

Yeah i have chosen the other bluetooth gps unit, just wondered why the key and numbers where on the TomTom unit only but i guess this is normal.
It's normal - it's just telling you that the initial key for the tomtom unit is 0000. You probably don't have a key set for your one.
I had a problem a while back after I had been mucking about with settings trying to get virtual earth to work. In the end I went right back to settings and under bluetooth, deleted the device and got it to search again for bluetooth devices. I then chose port 0 when asked for a new outgoing port.
I have nothing setup under GPS in Start>Settings>System. I then went back to tomtom and configured again using port 0.

How strange is that!!! I deleted the gps unit from the bluetooth device list, searched for it again and selected port 0, booted up tomtom and it was already connected, didn't need to configure the tomtom software at all
So thanks for the help buddy

I just bought a Qtek 9100 today along with a Holux GPSlim 236 GPS. I can connect to the serial port and I use port 7 as my outgoing port. The problem is that I cannot get the manager to give me the option to connect to the "SPP slave", and the GPS viewer that came with the unit will not communicate with the GPS. Am I missing something here?
ttt
Google this file
WM5GPSFIX
I am still not getting the spp slave to show up. It shows "serial port" but nothing else. That dog ain't gonna hunt with this Holux. Someone please help!
Surely SPP stands for Serial Port Profile, therefore isn't "serial port" much the same thing?
Have you looked at this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=28386
Because I'm trying to use the Mapking software, things are a little different. In addition, I cannot access port 0 at the Mapking GPS setting or at the BT cpl.
Gepol, I got the GPS icon to show up in the connections tab. I'm still not connecting for some reason.
Can someone PLEASE let me know if there is a solution to this mess. I don't want to return this GPS device, or roll back to an old ROM.
Ah, I used the above thread to help me set up both Tomtom and Memory Map and both now work well, and yes in my BT connection manager, only Serial Port is available same as you. Also untill I followed the steps in the thread COM 0 is not available in either application, the described process makes it appear to allow you to set it up, but then dissapears again after you complete but continues to work.
Globalsat BT-338 here though.
Well, my friend brought over his Rikaline unit and I set it up on the first try. Looks like a bad GPS. I'll return it tomorrow.
Thanks for the help everyone.
hi all
i have had a right time trying in vain to get my t mobile MDA compact to work with the holox BT-321 GPS receiver. the reason i am having so much trouble is when i pair the devices, a small window flashes up and says "This bluetooth device supports serial port profile, would you like to create a bluetooth serial port for it?" the window box is labelled "bluetooth serial port COM5" of course i click yes, it asks me for the name, and i leave it what its called "BTGPS74R" and click finish, this leaves me on the main menu. in the com ports tab there is "new outgoing port" and "new incoming port" i click outgoing and next and low and behold there is nothing in the box whatsoever to select. i have checked all the boxes in my bluetooth settings for the 2 com ports.
the phone refuses to show any ports at all, i have flashed the imate jam rom 1.12 as i read that solved it, but it never, i have tried a bluetooth program called pocket bluetooth tools and this brings with it more com ports but they do not actually work by putting the ports in the drop down list, its still empty !!! also when i select say port 6/7/8 the small window flashes up saying "this device supports......" and then the pocket tools dissappears and its all back to nothing again.
i am at my wits end with it and i dont have a clue how to get this bluetooth port to actually show up so i can bond with my bluetooth GPS and make tom tom 5 work
thank you anyone who can help me
Dan
Hi,
i just resolved exactly the same problem on my mda compact.
I had to do a complete reset of the device...
Hi
I am having a similar problem. I have an orange SPV M1000 and the same bluetooth GPS device. It is paired in bluetooth devices. When I got to connect on Tom Tom 5 it can't pich up the receiver. I have tried all the different wired/bluetooth etc device settings in TT as it says to try wired if bluetooth doesnt work. But to no avail. I'm tempted to try different sat nav software. Any ideas? Let me know if your issue gets resolved!
cheers
AJ
Hi guys,
The options for new outgoing/incoming port creation are to connect to a device with which you haven't paired. My gps creates a com5 too, like all of yours & TT5 finds it pretty fast when I have it to use 'another bt gps' @ com5.
When you think a hard-reset will solve your problem, get yourself a good backup first. Cause sometimes you can restore that backup & the problem is still solved.
BTW does your gps support nmea protocol? TT can only handle nmea & that could be the cause when your gps is setup for external communication with another protocol.
Good luck M
Thanks for the reply
Hi there
I've attached the info from my receiver, looks like it should be ok.
Tom Tom only has connections on infrared, BT on COM6, Serial Cable on COM1, COM9:, COM2:, and Serial on USB
When I go to Start>Settings>Bluetooth settings there are options for bluetooth serial settings. These are non changable and if you check the boxes it will set Inbound Com port to COM4 and Outbound COM port to COM5.
These com ports dont seem to be options in Tom Tom 5 which confuses me.
So i download a program called BeeLineGPS which does a scan of all the ports and baud rates which I thought would be easier than the manual setup of TT5.
Try the com port options mentioned earlier with the BeeLine software and it still cant pick up the GPS device. Tried fiddling around for ages and still not working.
Do I need some kind of software for forwarding the ports so TT5 can see the device.
The advert for the device i bought promised me and easy set-up but this is being a pain
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/32-Channel-Bl...03433467QQihZ018QQcategoryZ4668QQcmdZViewItem
All Fixed now. I upgraded the Rom to a newer version. After this the tom tom picked up that it was actually on port 5 which it wasnt doing before. Bobs your uncle
I've just installed tomtom 6 on my pda and also got it all paired up with by bluetooth gps. Also opened com0 as an outgoing port. I can see in the gps status screen the little yellow and blue circle going round, but i cant seem to pick up any sattelites, have kept in the same position for over 40mins. I used the same gps unit on my old MDA III pda and it worked perfect.
Is there anything else i need to do?
You could try downloading and trying VisualGPSce or summat to test the output from the GPS BT unit, just in case it's a TT issue.
You might even have some sort of other SW on your PPC confirming the information received from your BT GPS
Have tried the above program but dont get any response from it. Not too sure what the problem could be.
Anyone else with a similar issue?
So you've switched on your bluetooth gps unit and paired the two, and you know that's all working. Except that no gps unit can see it?
I've paired up my Vario II with the GPS unit. Opened and outgoing Com port (i've tried com0 and com4). Now i start tomtom through preeference etc i select the correct com port. Now the yellow/black icon starts to move, but even after an hour of standing in one place in the open air i dont get any gps response.
And i used the same gps unit on TT5.
Connecting a non-tomtom gps to tomtom 6
1. You need to pair your bluetooth GPS to your TYTn
2. you need to connect it to a com-port (take a high port like 9)
3. start tomtom and set a non-tomtom bluetooth gps at com 9
thats it.
hmmm, i've tried the above too on com9 but no change. The gps device does work as it worked with TT5.

My COM Settings
As a novice, I went through a lot of trial and error before getting my GPS to work.
My COM Ports settings now work fine:
BT GPS (COM9)
Incoming Port (COM2)
Have you set an incoming as well as an outgoing port? Maybe a silly question.
beam
try turning off beam receive all incoming beams this makes it work on xda1 this might help

You shouldn't need an incoming port.. only outgoing.. (at least on the 10 or so BT GPS unit's ive tried none have needed it)
==========
(Also note on the hermes you cant use COM8 reliably as it messes with the USB Modem options as they seem to use COM8 internally so stay clear of that one)
VisualGPSce doesnt seem to work properly on my hermes.. I use free.mytracking.net's client to test gps easily.. just set the right com port and hit start.. ignore the user/pass bit as thats not important.. if you have a good signal you will get a green bar and number of satellites if communications are working and a red bar and 0 satellites if they are not.
Make sure you do not have the "secure connection" box ticked in port settings, otherwise you will not connect.
Tytn has an interesting feature: To pick up a satellite signal with TomTom 6 the radio of the Tytn must be switched ON. If the radio is switched off no signal is beeing received from the bluethooth device.
Thanks

Configured lots of tomtom and GPS. Paired, outgoing, no secure, etc. I Know how.
Flashed to WM6 and spent all the afternoon till I read this thread.
Almost fool!
Thanks a lot, man!!
Anyone know why I cannot get TOMTOM working under WM6? I've tried the connection, and then set up through tomtom. It shows the BT GPS but doesn't actually contact any satellites.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
PauL D
I assume that you are outside with a clear view of the sky?
I use Igo, and is working well.
no problems here. tomtom works pretty well with ba and wm6
How to set your BT GPS receiver to work properly

That's all.
p.s. I'had your same trouble and I solved it in this way.

i was having too many problems with the com ports...
so i setup gpsgate... now its working fine.
I'll try it thanks,

Which ports
Hi all,
Tried the suggestion above. Set hardware port to COM 6. Set Bluetooth to Com 6. No joy. What should I set the program port to in the GPS Settings? Is there a specified baud rate?
Is it something to do with the BT radio? Do I need to update it somehow?
Thanks,
Paul D
Update
Changed the Program settings to Com 5. Now it recognizes the GPS unit's address (BT 00 12 c8 90 65 ac) but still no satellite connection.
Paul D
Works!!
Followed the other suggestion and took it outside. DERRR!
Feel like a Git.
Thanks Guys,
Paul D
i have a xda trion and have installed tom tom software. Problem is i cannot get a gps signal. Within the tom tom software what type of gps receiver do i set it to or am i missing something more obvious. Any help appreciated.
What kind of GPS receiver are you using? If you're using a bluetooth receiver other than the TOMTOM one, you have to discover your GPS, then, after you've paired with it, go into the COM port tab of BT devices and add a serial port, and select your receiver.
In TOMTOM select "OTHER" BT GPS and select the COM port you created.
I don't know what you need to do with the TOMTOM receiver. I assume it's similar.
I have tried to select the requested com port(3 or 7) and it rejects it with "the COM port could not be created. please check your settings and try again" i have no other programs using GPS.

I use com 2 on mine
oh right. but tomtom asks for ports 3 or 7 to be used. can i ignore it. and use to. is there anything else on the phone i need to set ?
J
In bluetooth settings > com ports what com port do you have? If you don't have one create an outgoing port, I have mine set on com4 and in Tomtom my gps is set as other bluetooth gps receiver and select com4.
