MSN Messenger IM's as Data or Text????? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Heres a weird question... does anyone know if MSN Messenger on Cingular 8525 sends its IM's as TEXT messages or Data? Cuz freakin cingular/AT&T doesnt have unlimited text, i dont want to run up a huge bill. I have AIM2.0 CE and it sends its IM's as DATA which i totally love. Any info would be great!

From what I have read, the new IM program that they offer sends them as text messages, however, for 19.99 a month they now offer unlimited text.

This is kind of vague info but you requested ANY info. I recently found a website where they gave instructions on installing Windows Messenger for WM2002 and then upgrading to Windows Messenger for WM2003. This will give you Messenger that only uses data. I wish I could find where the instructions were explained but I can't. I actually did it and so far Cingular is not showing me using any text messages.

how do i get the free aol instant messanger app Qtek 9100

There is a free instant messenger app that comes with all WM5 phones. SDA, etc. My Qtek 9100 only has the MSN messanger app. I am looking for a free aol im app. Also I use Mac.....so how do i get it to my phone. It seems you can only do it from a PC. There has to be a way around this. Does anyone know a download place for the aol im for WM5? Has anyone figured this one out....I know you can buy one, which is lame.....when it is free on most WM5 phones. Please someone out there......give the answers.....lol.
u can do this by using agile messenger
i dont have my wizard already, but i found in the internet this free messenger:
http://www.movsoftware.com/products/imov/imov.htm
they say it is for WM 5.0
Agile says the WM 5.0 comes soon. (But i guess the 2002 Beta works too)
this agile messenger u can try it, i use it in my pda2k wm2003
Ahem...hello Alex. The T-Mobile messenger app is called OZ. It's actually pretty cool, but it only integrates AIM, ICQ, and Yahoo. Here is the Cab file.
Hey Yung. Thanx for answering his question and not giving him a whole bunch of alternitives. I was looking for this to, and every time I asked soemone would post; "use this, use that, I recommend this..." You get the idea. Anyways, thanks man.
Later; Lew
I tried out the OZ program and it seemed to work just fine. What I don't like is that it appears to use SMS for your IM's instead of your data connection. I talked with two people at TMO Customer service, but they just kept trying to tell me about regular texting. But on the TMO site, it looks like all instant message programs that come on their phones use SMS.
That is probably true since th eOX program dosent seam to work on my cingular 8125. It installs and all but it never can connect.
Later; Lew
OZ does appear to use text messaging, since T-Mobile just charged me for 45 text messages after I installed and started using it.
The T-Mobile extended ROM also included the T-Mobile Comm Manager. It has the phone on/off setting. See attached Cab...
Your list of PDA/Phones is longer than any of your posts. Cool 8)
I may try that comm manager, but I am going to wait till I will have the time to do a hard reset, just in case.

I installed the OZ messenger on my cingular 8125 and it worked fine. I also hope that it doesnt use SMS as I've been using it like mad and don't want to get charged... The GPRS/Edge icon changes to connected when I connect using OZ messenger, so i'm hopeful that it doesn't use SMS.
Wow. Are you on Cingular network? Please let me know what you find out about how it works, SMS or Direct.
Later; Lew
I installed the cab. Yet when I try to sign on, I get the sms yet it doesn't successfully work. Newbie apologies if I'm not doing something obvious.
Probably not, I tryed, not long, but I tryed to get it to work. It kept failing to connect. Meh... what can you do?
Later; Lew
So... I couldn't get it to connect. I uninstalled, but there is a ghost icon left in programs. How can I get rid of the shortcut?
It needs to be installed to the phone, not the card. ONce I reinstalled, it worked fine.
so has anyone been successful in runnin a free aol program from their MDA?? i hate the fact tmo charges 14.99 in addition to the 29.99 dataplan for unlimited text messages.

agile works fine, its not designed for wm5, but it still works. there is supposed to be a beta wm5 version coming out soon
I tried loading OZ on my Qtek 9100 with cingular and it will not connect. When I look in the registry under HKCU\OZ Communications\Configuration\1
Data: Network
Value: http://wirelessvillage.t-mobile.com
It appears to point to T-Mobile which is not my carrier and may be why I can't connect.
Has anyone been able to get OZ IM to work with Cingular? If so, what is this registrry value in your registry?
Thanks.

The Best Instant Messenger (IM)

Thought I would start this thread to identify the best IM for WM5.0 or Wizard. We are looking for a universal IM that connects to MSN, ICQ, AOL and Yahoo.
I have Agile Messenger but it seems to disconnect all the time while in a call or just randomly. Not to reliable. My wife has the sidekick and the IM is flawless.
What do you use and recommend?
Agile Messenger
Pro:
Nice interface that allows you to see all contacts from different services
You can pull ICQ info so you can see who are ebhind those numbers
Separate tabs for each IM window
Alerts when an IM appears
Con:
Connection drops when on call
Connection drops randomly (should be a buffer for lost connections before it disconnects)
The application will randomly close
I use Agile
About the cons:
Connection drops when on call (It uses GPRS/EDGE, which is the same part of the phone that makes/takes calls. The only other way is to use text messages, and that is costly)
Connection drops randomly (should be a buffer for lost connections before it disconnects) (I've never had that happen to me)
The application will randomly close (I've never had that happen to me)
Does anybody use the AIM that comes setup on the MDA? If not, why not? I don't use anything other than AIM, and the one that came with the phone seems to work fine (although I've only had it for a day now).
From what I've heard, the OZ messenger app which comes installed on tmobile mda uses sms to chat. this means you pay for each sms message unless you have unlimitted sms plan. also, i've found it to be painfully slow.
I think agile is great, especially the WM5 alpha build. agile must disconnect during a call because GPRS/EDGE and voice cannot be used at the same time. I also had random disonnects before I updated to the qtek AKU2 rom. Now that i have updated, agile works flawlessly.
the oz communicator does not use sms. i dont know why people start these nasty rumors. the problem i have with oz is that it constantly occupies the notification slot telling you that you ar available. the led will always blink orange when it is on. and i actually caught it disconnected with the available icon still in the notification tray.
if they fixed the notification to only when you get a new message then i would probably use it.
my agile closes its self too.

OZ absolutely does use SMS. I have performed tests on this where the ONLY use that could have been made of the SMS was the OZ client, and the counter got hit for EVERY message.
That's not a "nasty rumor" - its a FACT.
I totally agree that OZ uses SMS. I don't have unlimited SMS, so I never use it. After testing OZ, I suddenly had 45 text messages on my bill. Coincidence? NO! Like I said, I never use SMS, so it certainly was OZ that was using SMS to transmit those IMs back and forth.

I agree, we don't use unlimited SMS either, OZ is definitely SMS-based.
The SMS charges even say "IM" or "AIM" (can't remember which now)

I have been using the T-Mobile USA messenger software. It works, but the incoming messages are very slow. Outgoing ones are fast but the incoming take about 5 mins or so. Where can I download the OZ software?
I went to dl agile and the site says WM5 version coming soon. what version are you guys using?
the WM5 version of agile is due in the next 1-2 weeks...
there's a link to an alpha version of the WM5 agile in another xda-dev thread...

Any FREE SMS programs?

Hey guys,
Just been browsing around the net lately and see that you can send free text messages from certain web sites and now i hear ICQ. BUT, I was wondering if anyone here had written a program that will actually use the GPRS connection from our Data Plan to send out text messages? I know its a long shot, but i think it could work.
Reason : When you goto these sites . . (Ex. txtdrop.com; smseverywhere.com; etc) they allow you to send free text messages to almost any wireless carrier, some even just have you put in United States and then the number and it finds it for you. So i was thinking . . . Why not make a program that will do the same thing using those web-sites or something and instead of putting your name in where it says "you name" you just have it put in your wireless number so they can respond. SO, ur only getting charged for recieving txt messages.
I thought this up because i am with cingular myself here is the USA, and their plans is either 4.99 for 200 messages sent and recieved, or 19.99 for 3,000 sent and recieved!!! I already pay 39.99 for my F***IN unlimited data plan, WHY NOT USE IT!!!! If anyone can think of a way to get this to work, that would be AMAZING!!
I've heard there are programs that use ICQ to send and recieve free texts to phones but i haven't found anything for Windows Mobile. If someone knows of a way, or can think of an easy fix, please feel free to let me know ASAP!
i too iam trying to find this
iam on a company free data plan and had a bb 7290 that allowed me to send txt via gprs, i have an email account setup that allows me to send txt message via it on-line eg phonenumber @ sms.domain.co.uk this works online and can txt for free, ive setup a new email account that points to the ingoing outgoing address on my pda and currnetly testing this if you have any more info let me know please.

Upgrading: A Way to Escape AIM Charges?

I Hard-SPL'd my Wing and threw Touch-It 4.4 on it. From what I am understanding, this means I can now use my phone with any carrier. Does this also mean that while using it with T-Mobile that they won't be able to charge me for AIM messages that I sent thru wi-fi now? They have a nasty policy of charging for AIM messages even if you send them thru private wifi.

You have tp PAY when you are using wifi????
when gprs isn´t connected and you are using wifi - that COULD not happen in my eyes.
BUT often when GPRS is connected AND wifi also the programs go through GPRS!!!!!! ths the problem. allways disconnect GPRS!
there is a liitle app "MoDaCo - Nodata" that prevents GPRS for connecting - if you don´t wish it to...
Trust me. I had the GPRS connection deleted from the connection manager. It could not connect thru there at all. I even called them and they said themselves, "there's a portion of the IM that travels thru T-Mobile" They wouldn't tell me for what, just that it has to. Bull**** because when I'm using hacked AIM 2.0 (they block the official AIM 2.0.), guess what? No AIM charges...
But I hate AIM 2.0. The software is ancient and therefore annoying.
How does Tmobile charge you for the AIM message? As data? As a sms?
Like the other guy, I dont understand how Tmobile would even "know" your aiming if you are doing so via WAN. Hmmmmm strange.

Tmobile's OZ instant messaging application allows you to use AIM, YIM and ICQ .. but the catch is, it uses the text plan in order to avoid having to use a data plan. So people use the IM application then get a bill for 1,000,000 SMS messages and they have no idea where it came from.

Yeah thats exactly the way I understand it. I figured b/c he was talking about going over wireless he was using IM+ or something.
hidavi, have you tried a third party program like IM+ ??
Doesn't matter, they still charge thru IM+. I know cuz for a whole month I used IM+ thru wifi and I got overaged $80 for AIM messages. I swear, if I'm not on data or wifi, my IMs won't go thru, not thru OZ not thru IM+.
This is from a product review
What I didn't know is that it is not a true online instant messenger application. Behind the scenes, it sends instant messages using SMS, and on the other person's end, repackages those SMS messages into the IM application. It seems like a novel idea, but the side effects are awful: OZ Messenger's ability to stay "connected" for chat, report the online/offline status of others, and report YOUR status as online/offline is hit or miss. Sending and receiving messages is also very unreliable. During the three days I struggled through this, roughly half of my messages weren't sent due to a "network error", despite having 4 or 5 bars and a full EDGE connection. (Side note - I'm also worried T-Mobile will bill me for SMS usage when I used this instant messenger)

Wow doode.....that sucks....
Well, I'm not getting charged nowadays since I'm using hacked AIM 2.0, but I really wish this program had a Today plugin and a easier to use interface...
From what I found in the guts of the registry, OzIM uses a T-Mobile server as a portal for the IM system. Since every IM you send filters through their server, they have full control to see where and what you are sending, saying, seeing, etc, even if you are on a WiFi connection.
I've seen several recommendations for alternate IM systems that Don't Suck. Slick was recommended by somebody, but I haven't personally tried it yet.

verizon releases mobileim for windows mobile

along with the xv6800 update and vzwnavigator, verizon has also released mobileim for windows mobile. its an IM client that uses text messages for communication. so now you can send ims from aim, live messenger, or yahoo, on the verizon network without using data. however, it does consume sms messages, but thats not bad if you have an unlimited messaging plan and no data plan (like me)
EDIT: Upon testing the software I noticed that the software initiates a data connection. According to the download page it only uses sms messages. going to call verizon tomorrow morning and find out whats actually going on. (i really had hoped that this would be like the get it now mobile im, as i mentioned before, i have no data plan. unfortunaty for me it started using the data network)
I installed and tried it a few days ago. The interface is clean. But you can't be logged in to more than one account at once. If you're on Yahoo IM and receive a message on AIM, you must exit Yahoo IM to read the new message. I prefer an integrated program, like JiveTalk or IM+.
I have unlimited data but a very modest allotment of phone minutes; since I knew I'd be using the Web and JiveTalk extensively, I didn't pay extra to get free SMS. For me, the new Verizon IM service would cost, right?
Does anyone know whether it accepts file transfers? I think it does not.
I tried to have a PDA phone with no data plan for a while... I had a text message plan and thought that it would cover me. I then noticed that when I sent/received a text message my data would connect.
I called VZW and they indicated that on a smart phone, when you send or receive a text message you use data... on a non-smart phone you consume minutes. Either way you pay two times to send or receive text messages.
Verizon does have a 29.99 unlimited data plan... I would suggest that... 1 MB of data with no data plan is like $15 bucks.
Ah, great: Since I have the $30 data plan, I can use this Verizon app for free. I think I'll try it out, if only to advise my friends whether to use it or a third-party app like my beloved BeeJive JiveTalk.
Do you have a cab? i can't find the download for this and my girlfriend is dying to have aim on her touch
lol.
this is funny. verizon not happy only with getting their money-hungry grips on gps but now they're tryin' to leech the instant messaging too... seriously, this is why i got a pda in the first place, cuz it's the only platform verizon isn't locking down and forcing you to use their money-sucking apps. now they're clearly trying to corner that market as well.
