no switching to edge, no switching to 3g,

Hey all,
is there anyway of stopping wm6 from connecting to gprs other than deleting the connection?
while i'm under 3g umts coverage, i would like it to be connected as the data is free... but when out of coverage or when my hermes decides its only going to join the roaming network (where i only get gprs), i get charged data.
any ideas guys? couldn't find much in the search. must be searching for the wrong thing or there doesn't seem to be a definate answer. ie, will allow umts, but not gprs etc. most seem to disable data all together.
anyone with Three in australia will know that Telstra charge a lot for using roaming when not in 3g coverage. there must be someone out there with the same dilemma?
Cheers,
Bill
can you just force 3g band only in phone setting?
possibly. at the moment everything is set to auto. so it defaults back to gsm (telstra network) when umts is unavailable. i just dunno what setting to pick for Three's umts. even then there is only one option for UMTS only. umts(2100+850) otherwise they are paired with gsm.
Any thoughts?

Hey guys!
I tried searching the forums on an answer to the question I'm having, but no luck. So.. without further adue, my first topic..
Is there a way to disable GPRS, and have only UMTS (and 3G, HSDPA) connections?
The reason I'm asking this, is that whenever I move into an area without UMTS coverage, it automaticly switches to GPRS. When this happens during a phone call, the call gets dropped! Also, while having a GPRS connection, noone is able to call me, without me noticing.
What I'd like to happen is that when there's no UMTS coverage, there will not be a data connection, at all, not even GPRS. (of course, GSM will be available at all times).
I've tried the utilities Bandswitch and CommMgr Pro (www.commmgrpro.com), but both do not seem to offer this feature.
Any idea's?
So, i have bugged folks on this forum about getting 3G to work on other carriers, and it turns out - it does work! At first i found out my settings were set to GSM only, but now i also found this weird inconsistency possibly a bug.
If i have Data Off after using 3G or GPRS for some time, when i turn it back on, phone would not connect to data service. After enabling it will simply time out.
I found that if i switch from GSM to WCDMA, and than back, 3G network would connect and work.
I don't know if it's specifically my phone, or a bug, so i'm just throwing it out there.

What carrier are you getting 3G to work? I doubt its working if its anything that doesn't run on tmobiles bands..the icon will come up and stuff but your either getting edge speeds or not getting any connection. I've had this phone show me 3G with full bars and just time out.. I can eveven put in a sim with a sidekick plan or other data plan and it shows 3G but it does not work
Well, i'm overseas and i have used it on Russian carrier Beeline and carriers in two other countries. Now, i do set my connection to WCDMA only, which gives me 3G icon. When i set it to GSM only, i see GPRS icon show up.
So, it does work, i use fring, online radio, google maps. But as far as speed concerned, i have not tested it.
Just ran a speed test using Speedtest.net tool, I get 3951kbps download, and 655 upload
thats 3G

It depends on many things. Maybe you should have enabled "Only 2G" on Settings>More>Mobile Network. Also, it could be that there is no good coverage where you live, so is always changing to 2G.
:silly:
Hi all, I noticed a strange behavior on my Galaxy S4.
If I leave WCDMA/GSM Auto, it often use 2G (GPRS) Network when the 3G signal is low.
If I decide to user only WCDMA, I always have 3G or H+ signal, even when there is a poor field. I can phone and browse the web.
So the question is: is there any way to change the threshold used by the phone to decide which of the band is better to use?
I would like to have GSM active only where there is NO 3G field... otherwise I want to stai in 3G.
Thanks in advance.
I have the exact same problem. It's very annoying. I haven't find any solution and I just use only wcdma. My wife's s3 works flawlessly.

I hope there's an app on the market for that, otherwise I know CM got many options where u prefer 2g to 3g and vice versa.
