Earlier this week I decided to do some "spring cleaning" and did a hard reset. With the exception of no reinstalling a phone skin (trying to live with the default skin and save the memory) I have all the same applications as before, installed to the same locations. But about 30-40% of the time when I do a soft reset my device will lockup. I have a Cingular 8125 and the latest HTC ROM.
To try and track this down I removed everything from my startup folder and disabled all Today plugins then started doing reset after reset. I then started adding things back one by one. To make an already long story short it seems to be an issue when the Today screen plugins are being loaded, and is not any particular plugin (I run three, all third party).
Of the three one has a very small memory footprint, the second kind of medium and the third a little larger. There does seem to be a relationship between how many plugins (and size) I am loading and the frequency of the lockups. With only the smaller plugin I have reset 4 times with no problems. With only the medium it is about 1 of three and with all three loaded it is almost 1/2 the time. All the plugins are the same version I was running (without this problem) before the reset.
I am running a few "tweaks" via Tweaks2K2 and SK Tools, but these are also the same tweaks I ran before. 21 megs of storage and 18 for memory. I'll probably forget something else to put into the equation.
Any ideas? I could do another reset and hope for the best, but (insert whining here) I just got everything reconfigured.

This may or may not help, but when I was running the straight Cingular 2.25 rom, I had lots of lockups, freezing (requiring a soft reset or even pulling the battery) and lots of dropped calls. For about 6 months I thought the 8125 was the worst device ever made, and was kicking myself for paying $200 for it and was looking at switching to a Nokia device running Symbian (like my old 6620)....
Then I found XDA-Developers. I was nervous at first, but then decided to give ROM flashing a chance. I started by CID unlocking and then going to the Faria AKU 3.3. I was amazed... My 8125 was now fast, and I had ZERO lockups, freezes, and my dropped call issue went away. Suddenly the worst phone / purchase I had made, was now a dream and what I had imagined this device should be like. I've since moved to various WM6 ROMs and while these are not perfect, I still do not have the problems I had with the Cingular stock ROM.
Flashing isn't for everyone, but I can say that for me, most of the issues I had (and made me absolutely hate my 8125) went away when I upgraded to a custom rom (and ones like the Faria 3.3, Molksi 3.3, Molski 2.6 final, and similar) are all VERY stable, fast, and just fantastic upgrades.
If you decide to try this, then make sure you read and understand this thread and the threads it points you to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298613
Thanks for the thoughts and the link. The IT department wasn't thrilled when I upgraded from my original to the current ROM, they could have a heart attack if I go to a cooked ROM. But if I can't figure anything else out I'm game to try that. I'll be out a lot the next couple of weeks and would rather live with what I have than take the small chance on bricking the phone right now.
I should have mentioned that all three plugins are installed to main memory, however two of the three (iLauncher and PB) are accessing my SD card for program icons and skins. There seems to be a relationship here. When I move the PB skins to main memory rather than SD the lockups seem to drop pretty dramatically. iLauncher loads after PB loads so assuming any issue with the card (maybe initializing) are gone before iL loads. I reformatted the card, but that doesn't seem to matter.
SD cards vary in their performance. Could be if you have some noname SD brand, it may have errors or perf issues. Maybe pick up a name brand (like Sandisk) or somesuch and see if the problem goes away. Also some of the larger (1GB and larger) can be flakey.
It is a SanDisk card and is 1 gig. But one can never have too many cards, maybe I need another.

Here's my comments after just over a week of use so far (O2 Exec Corp install with GBP Weather, IPToday, MagicButton installed)
1. Frustratingly slow when typing text messages, when using the inside keyboard there appears to be a delay between pressing the key and the letters actually appearing within the body...why?
2. The phone is frustratingly slow as well, when dialing sometimes the dialing tone isn't even made for some keypad numbers although the number is still dialed
3. Hanging up appears to take some time, around 2 seconds upon pressing the hangup button
4. Waking up the machine from it being turned off (standby) takes a few seconds before it becomes usable?
5. Answering calls when the Exec is closed with screen inwards...is this possible and if so how do you hold it to ensure the person can hear you, and likewise?
6. I need a GPS unit, am I best with wired/wireless (which had best battery length?), but don't want to spend a lot, any recommendations?
Thats about it for now but its enough to cause me issues...the things sexy, there's no doubt about that, but needs A LOT of tweaking - why did they not release it with a little more ram? 256 perhaps, is that the answer?
Appreciate your help!
Dude, you truly need to read thro this forum. All of these issues have been covered extensively, and most (all?) of us now have highly efficient, sleek, and fast machines. It's a bit unfair to ask people to post the answers again...
Spend some time then ask us for help on the couple of issues you truly cannot solve - you will then get a lot of support.
I've been through the entire forum and generally can't find a conclusive forum that solves the problems here!!! Unless I'm missing something...?
The main problem is that people don't name their subjects appropriately, and instead put 'Help me please...' or similar - doesn't help searching at all.
Could you point me in the right direction?
ashley,
if you hard reset (back/save first) your Exec and select Corporate mode (code is 0506) you Exec will have more user memory and will run faster. If you install GSPocketmagic++ it will be even faster.
I hope this helps.
Thanks dude, did the Corp install as my first measure anyway, but haven't yet tried PocketMagic, I'll give that a go and have a search on the forum to see what it does!
Can anyone direct me to a GSPocketMagic download? I don't seem to be able to find an English download?
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1276
However, I would recommend smallmenuplus; it has a freeware version, and I'd recommend paying for the full version's bells and whistles.
It's "based" on gspocketmagic (whether legally or not is still a debate I think), but it has improvements which make it a better option. Some of the boys have had a debate about whether gsp++ introduces a magic bullet that somehow speeds up the Universal. I don't think so, both are just good and efficient task managers. SmallMenu seems to provide the same and better functionality.
I'm not knocking GSP++, but SmallMenu is a more finished product.
My Smallmenu setup:

Thanks guys - I've just installed PocketMechanic and having run the Registry Cleaner my system is ALREADY running faster (half the time to execute apps now!)...so for anyone with similar problems, I suggest you start there!
Will get PocketMagic++ on there a little later tonight, and thanks again!
Vijay555,
So does SmallMenu also speeds up the HTC Universal without GSPocket Magic installed?
Hi everybody. I've only recently purchased my XDA Exec (£194 from eBay and in mint condition). Having upgraded the ROM to the latest official o2 AKU2 ROM (including extended ROM) it's running nicely and apart from a few minor niggles, I love it to bits.
I'm wondering if one of the minor niggles is fixable. Sometimes (regardless of how many active tasks are running) I'll get stuttering in the ringtones. This happens with WMA or WAV tones and with both incoming calls and text messages. Using default tones or imported third party tones makes no difference. Sometimes they will play fine and sometimes not. I can't pin it down to any particular cause. The only thing I have noticed is that the battery level icon sometimes flashes at the same moment that the stutter occurs, suggesting that perhaps whatever background task is updating the battery meter, may also be interrupting the sound.
Is this a known problem with the Exec and the other versions of the Universal? More importantly, is there a fix? To have stuttering ringtones in a device with such good specifications is a little unfortunate to say the least!
Your input would be greatly appreciated. I should add that the phone is running in corporate mode, although I didn't abort the installation of the extended ROM (as favoured by some).
Any thoughts?
Have u noticed this prob without memory card also (while removing it)
No, but I'm not inclined to insert and remove the card much (if ever).
Going back to my original question, is there anybody out there that does not have stuttering ringtones now and then? I'm curious to know whether this is a software or hardware issue because if it's software then hopefully it can be cured.
Thanks in advance.
If it's the same problem as mine, it's probably hardware limited. Loading/playing the ringtone while waking up the device seems to be too much for it to handle, and ringtone may stutter....
Michael
Thanks for replying bheam. I was beginning to think the same thing, but I've also had the ringtone stuttering when the device is already switched on (delivery reports for text messages for example).
Anyone out there with a different version of the Universal (other than the XDA Exec) who never has this issue?
Qtek9000 1.30.96, no such a problem, wav or mp3 ringtones playing well...even 1Mb files...but I have always more than 20Mb free ram.
Jasjar 1.90.96 ROM too doesn't have any prob
Thanks for your input guys. Well I'm assuming that hardware wise the XDA Exec is identical to the JASJAR, Qtek and various other versions. If so it must surely be a software issue? I run my Exec with the bare minimum of extra software and in fact the problem existed before I installed anything so I'm 99.9% sure it's not anything I'm running. Hmmmm, the plot thickens.....
Nevermind, just saw the last line of your first post, sometimes i wish there was a delete button on this forum.

Y dont u give it a try to upgrade it to AKU 3.2 ROM.
Sorry, I just remember that fact when I was using my old magician. I had that suttering problem on it. It was a problem of priority of audio process during a call. A freeware called GB soft tweak, which add some features for gprs connections, purpose to fix manually the priority of audio. And when fixeed at maximum, no more su-su-su-suttering on ringtones. At the beginning of the love story with my 9000, I reinstalled that freeware (wich has been updated for Universal, wizard and in general win2005) but it was useless on my pda which playes ringtones fluently. So, I desinstalled and forgot that soft... So let's have a try on it...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm a little reluctant to use an unofficial ROM. I'm hoping it won't be long before o2 release a AKU 3.2 ROM themselves.
As for the tweaking program, I'd already looked at that but would rather change the registry entry manually (since I assume that's all the tweak prog is doing). Anyone know where the audio priority key/string resides in the Exec registry?
Regards to all.

Hello,
I own a Qtek S200 and I have loaded it with every possible ROM without solving my problem. The problem is a very strong memory leak.
After a reset I have something like 17 mb free. At the end of the day I end up with around 5 Mb and here we go for another reset.
I am using SPB Pocket Plus so every task I start is completely closed when I am done with it.
Does anybody have the same problem? Is there any solution?
Thanks
xtrips - great topic title! A+ for effort
You'll have to detail what software you've got installed, and for your own benefit, try hard resetting and running the device without any software installed to confirm the location of the leak. Frankly advice is going to be - hard reset, re-install one app at a time and run it for a while, until you find the one that leaks.

Hi, I'm having the same kind of problems, never got time to test and check if it's software or OS related..
Need help!
Hi,
I just want to know how much RAM do you have left after a soft reset and if it holds an acceptable amount of free ram in the long run.
I have tried every available ROM on my S200 and I usually run the following softwares:
- SPB diary, weather, time, insight
- Wisbar Advanced
Well after soft reset I have something like 18 Mb free but after an hour it gets to 10. The morning after I only have 6 or 5. At this point it is useless to try to run anything. It just freezes.
I usually do at least 2 or 3 soft resets a day.
I am sick of it and I would like to know if anybody shares the same experience?
Thanks
Ditto here too, a memory leak of some sort. Installed SKs soft to 'get back' the RAM which just sends hibernate calls to running soft and has them free up what RAM they have accumulated thus far. I also found that at the end of the day my filesys.exe, gwes.exe and my shell32.exe have trippled or even quadruppled in size and anything I try to free up the RAM is futile - soft reset gets it back to around 18MB. By the way I don't have any SPB Software installed either, it probably isn't any faulty soft, I am thinking that it has to do with these ROMs that we flash with. When the original QTEK ROM was installed the RAM at boot was already at 18 - 20MB and now with 2.20.7.34 it starts with 2.2MB and then jumps back to +/- 18MB after about 10 seconds or so... something in there is clanking around somewhere but I am not a mechanic.
Just my input, I would like to not have to do 2 or 3 reboots per day too...
Hi there, just found that loaded app's dlls won't be unloaded, even if you use a task manager to really close the apps. That seems intended by design, it's not a memory leak (as they won't be loaded again the next time you start that app).
So.... if you use few apps, either intensively or not, you won't have to restart your ppc all the time. BUT if you use many (many) apps, even if you only launch them once per day, you may have to reboot everyday once your memory will be completely filled with those dlls. EVERYTHING uses dlls (and they have not much in common), including creating a new contact, new task, viewing your calendar, launching a settings applet, etc.
i have got the same problem, using AKU 2.3 ROM, which ROM are you guys using? And what today plugins have you got?
I have:
luncher
spb diary 2.2.1
ptravelalarm 2.7 beta
Don't bother....

I've been evolving around the same set apps loaded in my PDA from the beginning, on the other hand I tried 'almost' all the AKU's around and i can tell you that:
- only when I tried AKU's 3.x or WM6, and only then, I could clearly notice a serious improvement in memory management.
I was always blaming the software I was installing but i ran many tests including running my PDA with the OS only, not even loading Extended ROM stuff. Well my S200 always behaved badly.
The problem is these AKU's are still very buggy and i had to reverse back to the release Qtek version 2.2 os.
It's the worse for memory management (i wake up sometimes wit only 2.3 mb memory lesft to use!) but it still is the most stable and all features works.
That's all.
has anyone thought of a way around this? or a way to increase RAM for that matter? i've been using PocketIE and after 3 or more additional windows via spb pocketplus, the prophet slows down drastically or worse it hangs when i check the RAM it's already critically low.. i tried rebooting the prophet and running only PocketIE again through GPRS (3 windows again) still the same thing.. slows or hangs.. any workarounds here? BTW im using iMate ROM 2.13.9.23WWE if it helps.. RAM starts up at 18MB..
Hi, having same problems here with ram. Maybe we could just stop some processes we don't use form start up. For instance
Input method; i just use kboard, not handtype or phonepad

MMS
GPRS
Speedialing...
The question; HOW TO!?
Maybe you could try the little proggie OxiosMemory to get rid of the trash without having to soft-reset. Can be found typing OxiosMemory in Google.
since our wizards are not so powerful in sense of cpu and memory, is it better to have almost clean rom without touchflo and htc home and those functions to replace with spb pocketplus and weather, or even with more simple rltoday + some other weather plugin (without smart scrolling function)?
Hum... thats one of those questions thats kinda up to you decide what works best, according to your needs. If you really want a clean ROM, meaning standard apps and all, you go with the official ROM's from your phone provider.
I rather use specific software to do what I need than use a plugin that does everything and some stuff I don't want.

This is from usability point of view, and what is better from performance point of view? All you need (and do not need) in rom or light rom with lot of add-on softwares?
Lets see... if you have all the apps built in the ROM, you won't be able to remove them if an update comes along, you can overwrite them tho, meaning you'll have probably some junk after a while.
If you have a light ROM, if its really good, you won't have any problems with it and you can install whatever you wish as an add-on. Sometimes when you put some software thats not supposed to work with our devices (like HTC Home Plugin, for example) it will slow it down... but if you have it built in on the ROM, it works just fine. That is due to memory allocation problems that do exist on the WM devices. For instance, that was what kept us from installing the Touchflo drivers on Wizard WM5 devices.
Hope that helps you
programs inside the rom dont use any storage or ram of a device unless started
not using all the space in the rom dont make it faster really
so it's better if one removes something to put something else in it's place
because programs installed my the user does! take up storage
and of cause only ram if started
dferreira, as i can see you are using wm5. why? is your build of wm5 faster then original one (i have t-mobile). currently i am using pdaviet wm6 built.
after flashning it i was surprised how fast it was. but now after few installed softwares and a month of using it seems to getting slower. is it just my imagination or you also have that experience?
Any ROM behaves like that after a while. Maybe is something to do with the trash WM leaves behind everytime we install something.
Why I use WM5? Because that's the OS that came with our devices. From what I've tested, there isn't a single WM6 that does work without any bugs (missing calls, wifi not working, etc). Also I find that WM6 makes our device drain the battery a lot faster. So I decided to make a WM5 ROM with the stuff we miss the most on WM6.
i presumed that this is similar to windows installed to pc. i will wait for your new 5.1 release and then will give a chance again to wm5.
for sure i will not miss htc cube or flo.
what about better memory management in wm6? is it possible to improve it in wm5?

hey everyone!
I have been loving my imagio with the Orange Slim Rom on it, but there is always room for improvement... i have been reading about the HTC Performance overclock for the older qualcomm processors msm7x00, and was wondering if anyone had tried it on our Qualcomm 7600..
Anyone Care to be the first to try it? Im kinda scared since i dont have insurance on my phone.
Hey, I'm giving it a go now. As they say, you only live once, right? Or twice (insurance helps with that ). By the way, the cab you have didn't have the shortcuts to make the actual changes. I found one labeled "__with_shortcut_" floating around the internet somewhere that actually let me use the thing. It's about the same file size.
I haven't noticed anything too dramatic, but here's some of the things I think got better:
- Lists like the contacts or All Applications seem to come up faster.
- Populates the complete lists of songs on the touch flo music library much faster and maintains them better, especially after a reboot when everything's fresh.
- Speeds through the phone's setting menus now, where it used to slow down in a lot of places.
- Google Maps approximates my location the moment it starts now, whereas it used to take a couple seconds after coming up (I don't know why that is since it finds you first by using cell towers, but it's just better at it.) It also loads the maps faster when moving around.
- Weather animations appear smoother.
That's about it. No other applications load or work any faster for me, and animations are just as smooth as they've always been. I've enabled landscape support for just about everything on the phone, and nothing rotates faster either. That said, I'm running the Imagio's stock rom with nothing more than the SSK TP2 Dynamic Resource Proxy and Manila NoPushInternet to keep the memory usage down, so I don't really know how what it'll do for a custom rom. I'm really considering removing it though, since the gains I've seen are too small to run the risk of bricking my phone or draining the battery faster, which I feel like it's doing. It is very stable though, so I see no problem in giving it a try. It never locked up and nothing crashed. Hope your experience fares better.
Thanks for the Review of this app. I think more people (including myself) will feel a little bit more confident in using this app, knowing that we havent had any brick problems... Everyone that has downloaded this app please leave your view on if this app really works or not.

so in conclusion, i highly doubt HTC Performance does anything AFA changing clocks & we apparently can't overclock.
