m600 sms viewing problem - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

I have an Orange M600 from France, which I use here in China. I have been having some issues with the unit which seem to come up when I use the camera. getting a frozen screen. Up till now it was nothing that a soft reset could not fix. This time I was using the camera and a text message came in. When I went to open it I got a blank screen, where I would noramally see the text of the sms. I still can see the windows icon, clock etc. on top and the reply, keyboard and menu items on the bottom, otherwise the screen is white. If I try to to reply the only thing that changes is reply changes to "send" and the rest of the screen is white, if i click on the keyboard icon i get a keyboard but no text will come up on the screen.
1)my instinct is to hard reset the device and see if it helps
2)I'd like to try to backup the sms data but not aware of the solution for that
3)really want to get everything onto my SD Card
4)when I returned from the trip where this occurred the active sync started giving me grief(I think found a possible solution for that but thought it could be related)
5)wiki is a hit/miss thing here, today no access
6)Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided, I am pretty new to this.
MrAndrew
SPV M600
5.1.195
rom-2.15.13.27 WWE

was able to back-up my sms with a little program from this site, but the chinese text will not come willingly.

Multiple icons mode

Hello fellows,
When there's more than one "pending" icon near the clock, such as: new message arrived, phone call missed, speakerphone ON, etc. -- they are (expectedly) replaced by one icon that looks like a bubble with some lines in it.
It's great way to see there are many notifications waiting for you. When clicked, this icon displays another row with all the constituent icons.
However, with O2 1.72.187 image (without Blackberry support as I don't need it) there is a permanent O2 icon displayed. And the worst about it is -- it is treated just like it IS one of "pending notice" icons! So if you get a text message, you don't have cute envelope icon, but you have a BUBBLE already!
Previous versions allowed to move the O2 icon (centre or left), and it didn't count as notice, so "new message", or "Missed call" icon displayed as is - and only when you had let's say "new message" AND "missed call" you used to get the "composite" bubble icon. Now you can not do anything with O2 icon (it used to display connections menu), and it's just a piece of ****e sitting there for no reason.
That issue really ticks me off as I can't instantly see on the screen - what exactly has my XDA II received! The red LED on the top right corner is very helpful to indicate waiting things, and if I could somehow make that O2 icon to NOT count into pending icons -- or may be just bump up +1 the wrap limit for that place, so it would accomodate one more icon before wrapping into bubble icon, -- I'd be a happy camper.
Can it be done via registry?
Thank you for your attention!
Speach Bubble
I have the same frustration. Hoping that some wiszzard out there will be able to help

I looked into this thing with the O2 icon. Before the 1.72 release it used to allow selection of connection and to disconnect. It was also possible to position it elsewhere. Now all that is possible is to tap it and it brings up O2 Active. It sucks..
I found the registry entry that specifies the position of the icon, but altering it is useless because when ever O2 Active starts it changes the registry entry back to its 'middle' position setting. Sort of defeats the object of having the data in the registry in the first place! Even deleting the entry in the registry is no good as O2 Active re-creates it!.
I dont have the O2 Active burtton no more, i deleted it from the startup folder in windows and it doesnt load it up at start up, but if you click O2 Active then it shows up and you have to restart the xda2 again to get rid of it...
Thank you guys for your involvement.
I tried to just stop O2 app; it only could be cancelled with End Task, and the bloody icon still sat there, only this time doing nothing.
Seeing not much practical use in that "newfangled" O2 icon -- I thought I'll rather give up that interface at all.
Thank you dcs, it looks like they really deliberately locked things up to make it linger -- breaking the good thing and achieving the opposite effect. The old O2 app icon was a) useful; b) moveable between left corner & centre and c) didn't spoil the notifications count, so I didn't mind.
So I just went to add/remove programs and scrapped both O2 apps.
Then had to change background, as even after reboot there was ugly leftover on the screen (I think the right part remained transparent, ugh :evil. Finally it is all working fine now and I see what comes to my XDA2.
Enough time spent, mine and yours. It better be changed in next versions, or will be permanently kept out of my XDA-2.
<rant>Whoever designed that change just drove me off using the O2 app. (Talk about luring new customers?) I sincerely hope someone from O2 reads all the bitter words in this thread, and passes them to people responsible for packaging new OS versions. I like O2 as company, but the current state of O2 app is an abomination. (Also lots of referenced to paid services from the menu, but lack of free services)
By losing this app, there is no way I can subscribe to any of O2 "value-added" services. I have TomTom for realtime voice "satnav" and AvantGo for my news -- all with no rolling subscription fees.</rant>

Out of interest, just selecting a different theme in the Today settings clears the display problem (after uninstall) or prevents it from happening if done before uninstalling.

May be I had selected a wrong theme, (or may be the same theme and didn't realise it), but I had to also [x] "change background" checkbox. Then I selected the bright blue Default and that was it
Edit: "Change background" has nothing to do with background problem it's actually related to adjacent Browse button.
In fact there were only 4 Today themes that had this problem, all the rest of them worked fine. I presume they were old version or something.
Glad that you managed to solve the problem. However, mine continues as I use CommonTime mNotes to interface to Lotus Notes.
So whereas I has the speach bubble permanently on the today screen (sharing the frustration that I didn't know when I had received a missed call/SMS, revceived a new note etc), I now have a permanent 'M' symbol where the speach bubble originally was.
I really just want it blank and only to come up with a speach bubble where there is something new.
How do I get rid of the 'M'?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

HTC Wizard background picture

Hiya...
I own a SPV m3000 (Wizard) and have a really annoying problem.
I got a background picture that I want to use on my Wizard.
In the home-screen I have put it as the background picture, and it shows well.
Now every time I soft-reset my device, the picture is gone, and the background of the original today screen is back up again.
If I click in start however, in the background of the popup menu, the picture is still partially there, so it looks like it's stuck "underneath" the background that is displayed.
Is there a tweak witch lets me keep my background, even after a soft reset?
And by the way, has anybody found a tweak yet to increase the time the keyboard backlight is on? :?:
Hope someone can help me...
Greetings!!!
Try to place your background picture in `my documents` folder.
Already tried that....
Also put it in the Windows directory...
No luck I'm afraid....
Any other suggestions?
Try to find the other image change your new picture to the same file name and overwrite the original. Dont know if its in the rom or just a file on the device though but its worth a check.
nope
That aint it either..
I think the pictures are in Rom.
It are the stwater and tdywater.gif, but they change back to the original after a soft reset.
I now took matters in my own hands, and creater a new today screen wit a today screen maker.
That seems to work....
Still, has anybody gotten a tip to keep the keyboard light on longer?

Alarms won't shut off

and the Cingular 8125 blinks orange, which apparently means the phone is sending a "notification" and the screen no longer comes up that allows you to snooze the reminder, or turn it off, etc. Soft reset and the phone comes up alarming like crazy, blinking orange instead of green, and same problem keeps on for an hour or so.
It happened some time after I installed Qusenetsoft News Reader and NetFront 3.3 Preview. I've uninstalled both programs, and still have the problem.
I'm thinking of maybe flashing the device with one of the newer ROM's here, since I'm still running with originals.
Anybody have any ideas as to how to fix this before I hard-reset again?
get CheckNotifications (google it, should get you right to the place you need to be), and use that to remove all duplicate notification items and maybe any other items that clearly don't belong there (be careful, though - there's items in there that should be there).
Other than that.. hard reset
Hi I agree with Zeboxx try check notifications - link to a prev post here where you can download it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=53061
If that does not work try the same feature in sktools - this seems to be better at removing stubborn recurring notifications and has worked for me. Google it demo should do that for you.

Moderation: Link removed - no longer valid/exists
The link's Dead, use this instead. FixUnreadCount.zip. This will remove all messages from the Today screen. Works like a giff for me.

The file downloads as a zip file.
Extract it using winzip.
It will unzip to an EXE file. This is an exception to the usual rule that you run EXEs on the PC, in this case move it to your device SD Card using active Sync explorer button or by using a PC card reader. Once on the device tap it to run it.

Unread SMS
Thanks for your help - it worked !!

I get 1 undread sms message after i installed the palm message app.. Tried this and it didnt clear it.. Any ideas how to get rid of that?
yea i get that palm 1 txt too.. i have to delete all my palm msgs then make sure the app is closed out then start it and that fixes the issue
fixunreadcount.exe didn't work for me either so here is what I did:
1) Backup using Sprite. Uncheck messages so they aren't included in the backup.
2) Hard reset the device
3) Restore using Sprite
4) Re-setup your email accounts
How to hard reset (from the wiki):
Hard Reset **NB** This cannot be performed while the device is connected/charging!**
* Press and hold both soft keys
* Using a stylus, press and hold the soft reset button at the bottom of the phone
* Keep all three buttons pressed until the keypad lights turn off and then flash
* Release the soft reset button while still pressing the soft keys
* Let go of the two soft keys once the message "This operation will delete all your personal data, to manufacturer default" appears on screen
* Finally, press the green call button to perform the hard reset, or press other key to cancel
Whew...
Thanks for this post. This has to be one of the most annoying glitches I've encountered with my phone. For the first couple of days, I'm like; ok, no big deal. I'll figure it out, or I'll just get by with the dumb little message showing a text. But after 2 days, I had to figure it out somehow. ATT tech support is useless. I'm not going to factory restore!!! That's simply not an option.....
Long live this board and it's contributors. This find was GOLDEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!

"I've tried everything" doesn't help us much.
Did you run http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=219102&d=1250917002
If not then try it.
If you have, run it again, possibly twice. Following each attempt do a soft reset BUT NOT by sticking the stylus in the hole. Soft re-set by LONG pressing the power button until you get the warning message.
(Just ramming the stylus in the hole can actually delete the changes that runnng the program has just made - so don't do it. The program makes some changes to the "registry". Unfortunately registry changes are not "written back" immediately - thus doing a stylus in the hole reset may be too quick and the changes lost forever. Doing a "long press" ensures all pending write backs are done before the reset is executed - which is what you want.)
Mike
Thanks a lot for this contribution.
FYI: I ran it twice, but it didn't fix it. Then I restarted. Then ran it again. Then it fixed it.

Text issue once upgraded to 1.66

Hi all,
I have upgraded my HD2 to 1.66 - the WWE version from the HTC website. Now when typing a text message, about half the time the machine starts to go slowly and the bottom text that I'm replying too turns a black colour and I can't see the text that I'm trying to type into the reply, but the XT9 text suggestions still pop up.
It's really weird and I was wondering if any of you guys had come across this, as I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else on the forums.
Thanks!

It's a known sms issue since the last sms update. Nothing can be done for now. You can either disable HTC messaging or wait for next HTC update? (if they even recognise this as a 'bug')
