hi,
I have a program and it has lots of settings saved in memory, when I exis the program I need to save settings in a config file.
My program has CString(s), CArray(s) and other basic int and DWORD varibles, so how can I save such complex settings?

If you're using MFC you could always attach a CArchive to a file and serialize
Perhaps you need to either create a log file - for debugging purposes or save your settings to the registry. If its the former then, check this one http://www.codeproject.com/ce/GenericLogFunctionality.asp it should be helpful. If its the latter, then you just search codeproject and you'll find lot of tutorials on the registry. Also, you can use CEDB which is a flat table data base that can store many data type structures including files and images, use it if you need to.
It may seem like you're lost now, but you can take an overview about the cons and pros of each technique so as to choose the best one for you.
For my config file I use plain english bounded by my own tags. I use a character sequence as a seperator for lists. I convert numerical values into text that can be human readable. There are some benefits to being able to read and edit it manually if the need arizes. I also made a class purely for writing and reading from my config file. Now when I to use a config file I can just drop that class into my project.
XML sounds good and similar but it would require a greater knowledge of xml.
Registry is easier and faster to do/execute but for data that can potentially grow too much it is probably best to keep it out of registry.
Is CArray serializable? do we just simply use CArray::Serialize and it will dump all included objects into a file?

If you can it would be easier to use CObArray and ensure that the array members are subclassed from CObject with the DECLARE_SERIAL / IMPLEMENT_SERIAL macros. You could also add a new << operator to the CArchive class and write the serialization routine but that would kinda defeat the object I guess.
I solved the issue using serialization, for CArray structures I used the following method:
File<<MyArray.GetSize();//store how many objects
for(all my objects in the CArray)
serialize them one by one
I did the same when loading and it works flawlessly.

Not sure if I have worded this properly as I'm at the edge of my knowledge but I wish to call a function that I am assuming is in a DLL which is contained in ROM. I know the name of the DLL but how can I get a list of functions available from it when I cannot copy it onto my PC?

First, what function exactly are you looking for? There may be some documentation on it somewhere.
To browse a ROM dll you need to get a ROM dump. The simplest way for your purpose, provided you have a WM5 device is to search for TESTWM5.exe by mamiac on this forum. It will dump all files to your SD. They won't be workable for coding purposes, but still good enough to use dependency walker to get exported functions from DLLs.
Unfortunately that still won't tell you the parameters the function expects. only its name.

Its a Sony Sat Nav Windows CE 4.2 device so unforunately theres not much chance of a ROM dump or documentation. Then unit is sold as a finished product and not intended for further developement.
I have installed TomTom instead of the poor app already installed and was trying to get access to the hardware buttons and Light sensor on the unit and then intended to use the TomTom SDK to recreate their functions.
The keys don't not trigger a key press event but their are DLL's called something like powerbutton.dll and navbutton.dll and so it's a fair guess that they could be used to trigger these events.
Obviously without knowing their exported functions I'm not going to get much further.
Any further thoughts ?

How exactly are you trying to catch the key events?
For what you describe, you don't just need to know function names, you need to know with what parameters to call them so this is definitely not the way to go.
If you are coding with C++ search for info on SetWindowsHook. I am not sure of its implementation on CE, but this might be what you need.

Offset version works only with the "ALL" parameter (I don't know what defines the offset, which component version?)

Did not work for me Tornado with Crossbow-Rom, i think you may ask maniac for the Offsets, he created CellProfileSwitcher, an very useful SmartPhoneTool with a huge list of compatible devices.
In Combination with your Tool it may be useful to create my own "CellMap", to see my Homezone or some other kind of zones, switched by CPS,yea.

Offset method will be activated once you'll have removed other options (COMPORT...) from the config file.
Remember that as long as I don't know what defines the offset, the only version that works is "ALL". This field will be used once I'll be quite sure the component version defines really the offset.
I hope to improve it, but also to let a chance to the user to configure it by himself.

Is your app suitable for smartphones? I have downloaded the

Hi again!
The problem was because I've installed app on card, not on device memory.
Cell searching works excellent, on my phone works GSMTestMode method (I am going to find out the differences between methods, but don't know where).
By the way - user interface for smartphone (non-touch display) looks like not fnished - 'backspace' keys doesn't work and it is difficult to leave edit mode too.
Will test it more and make some enhancement

I think the best cell id application from all times ever would be that which can change phone profile depending from location. I saw someone here is trying to do it, but will not be free, so no use. An app like that will eclipse all other... it will be like the next step in mobile evolution. Probably japanese already have it.

I'm new to Android development, kind of a Java noob, but not to programming in general. I'm not looking for code examples, just theory or a basic 'how this is done' in Java/Android. I also hope this will become useful information for other developers heading down this path.
I've had some success creating my first Android app - I apologize for not going into details about the specifics of the app, as I plan to eventually sell it commercially on the market - the question should, however, be applicable to any application using this flow model.
My current goal for this application is to create a 'plugin' type system ( like those used in OpenHome and other apps that allow user-generated plugin-able content / functionality ), to allow for flexibility in both my own further component development, as well as eventually creating an open interface for other developers to use to extend the application.
Currently my application is laid out as follows:
Main UI class
- entry point to the application
- starts the service class to spawn 'spinners' ( data processors )
- presents the user with an (ideally) extendable interface to the service
- binds to the service class using AIDL
Service class
- presents an AIDL interface for communication from the UI process
- creates 'spinners' of various types based on user interaction that process data
- persistent, will run in background, new Main UI instances will connect to the running service and present the currently running spinners.
- extendable via an as-yet-unimplemented plugin interface to add new types of spinners
Spinner classes
- use a generic interface with a handfull of common methods to communicate with the Service class, bubbling up data to the UI interface.
- processes user defined data streams, outputs to a buffer/sink suppled by the Service
Assumptions I can make are:
- the plugin (Spinner) class will always implement / override a group of methods to present to the Service class; ie 'putData()', 'getStatus()', 'start()' and 'exit()'
- the plugin class should always return data to the Service class via a supplied/shared buffer ( short array, for example )
Where I'm stuck at the moment is exactly how to implement extendable classes without those classes being a part of the current code base package. More simply, how do I interface with these classes without knowing their names, methods, etc?
As mentioned, I'm new to Java so I may just be overlooking an already implemented class that handles this interaction. If that is the case, I'd be happy for anyone to tell me to shut up and read the docs, if you can point me at the proper docs
What I really don't want to do is create a 'plugin language' for these external bits, as I feel this could hamper development of fast/functional plugins vs. those written as native Java classes. This would also expose potential security issues, as I'd need to create a public interface to the Service class for these applications to link to. I'd prefer if execution of the plugins remained private / internal to the 'main' application.
I'm already using an AIDL interface between the UI class and the Service class - it would potentially be possible to use further AIDL interfaces into each plugin, but from my romp-through-the-park implementing the UI -> Server communication in this way, I find it cumbersome and difficult to pass any kind of complex data sets/controls. And I'm still unsure how the Service class would actually implement these without inheriting the interface directly.
I've poked around Intents in Android, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around them/what they're for - it seems it might be possible to inherit the plugins that define themselves as sinks for my applications specific Intent type, but I'm lost in the details of how this works exactly, or if it would even be a viable path for what I'm trying to do. Can new Intents even be introduced into Android?

How can I implement a 'plugin' interface in my application to allow myself and other developers to extend my app through their own classes?
I've been a Java developer for 10 years or so.
From what I understand the "Android" way, would be intents. I'm still working on wrapping my brain around them too.
However, the "Java" way would be to define an interface (or several) for the plug-in(s) to implement. Then use reflection to identify classes in the classpath that implement that interface.
There are some advanced techniques using custom class-loaders, but researching reflection should get you started; if you choose to go that route.

Intents do seem to be the 'way to go' for inter-application communication in Android the more I read about it though - if I can figure out how to pull in plugins which specify my applications 'Intent' dynamically. Intents seem to work really well for spawning a 'dumb instance' of an application - like the browser when clicking a link in another app - when your application doesn't want to deal with that data locally.
Seems a bit more difficult to wrap them around a bi-directional interface between the service and the external plugin application. If anyone's got experience with this kind of thing I'd definitely appreciate prodding in the right direction. Documentation on Intents is confusing at best.
This thread is for announcements and discussion around the WP8NativeAccess project (https://wp8nativeaccess.codeplex.com/). The purpose of this project is to provide general-purpose libraries, usable from C++ or .NET, which enable access to the underlying functions of the OS. In some cases, this will mean simple wrappers around native APIs; in other cases, these will be more advanced operations which simplify using the low-level APIs.
Some of the functions that the Native Access project exposes are already available via the official APIs. Other functions, however, are not. While I have no objection to these libraries being used in Store apps (license permitting), it is unlikely that Microsoft will permit the ones which use unofficial APIs.
Note that this library does not provide any method for elevation of privileges. Consequently, the use of these APIs will be constrained by the sandbox in which all third-party WP8 apps run, as defined by the capabilities in the app manifest. In practical terms, this means that most of the system will be either inaccessible or read-only. Even so, it has already proven useful to myself. When combined with interop-unlock and Capability-unlock hacks (making it possible for apps to obtain higher privileges), these APIs become much more useful. In fact, the EnableAllCapabilities utility uses the Registry library. Similarly, if you have the ability to use restricted Capabilities in an app you are developing, you may find these libraries useful.
The libraries are as follows:
FileSystem version 0.4.0: Implements functionality to read, write, and get information about files and directories, plus supports creating symbolic links and enumerating file system volumes. This version contains a breaking change from 0.3.x: the NativeFileSystem functions are now static and the constructor is removed. This library may be built with or without the macro USE_NON_PUBLIC_APIS; by default it now includes this macro and require kernelbase.lib to build. If this macro is not defined, it builds using the public APIs without requiring any special libraries.
Registry version 0.2.9: Implements functionality to read and write registry values, and to create and delete registry keys and values. Many, though not yet all, registry value types are fully supported. This library consists entirely of non-public (for WP8) APIs and requires the KERNELBASE.LIB and ADVAPI32LEGACY.LIB export libraries for Windows Phone 8 in order to build (the DLLs are in C:\Windows\System32 on the phone; you can use Dll2Lib.exe to extract the .LIB files).
Processes version 0.1.0: Implements basic functionality to get information about your process, and to create or kill a child process. Very early version.

You may need to use 7-Zip or another extraction program better than the built-in Windows Zip extractor to open the archive.

I think there should be some way to list all the volumes...
Perhaps windows runtime has provided an async win32 file API wrapper which has the same ability as win32 ones ,so I think undocumented file API and registry ,process and etc are more important.
The latest version of the NativeFileSystem library can give you the mount points (as strings) for all volumes (C:\, D:\, etc.)... I implemented that a few days ago; it should be in this update. Sorry for not highlighting that more clearly (typo in the OP fixed now).

If you have the required permissions, yes. There's read/write functions for REG_BINARY, and also a simple wrapper around RegSetValue that will work for any type.
However, the library doesn't actually give you any privileges your app didn't already have. Without special Capabilities (which usually require hacks to enable), you won't have write access anywhere in the registry at all...

OK, thanks, but another question: I referenced .winmd file, but it gives me error, the component was not found. Any idea how to fix it?
Do you have the DLL and the WINMD in the same location? Are you creating a WP8.0 app (I don't know if apps targeting 8.1 specifically will work)? Are you building for ARM?

How far did you get, i.e. can you compile the app? Install the app? Launch the app? Does it crash immediately or does it actually load? Etc.
What, *exactly*, breaks? Does it break when you try to reference the NativeRegistry library, or only when you try to actually use ReadDWORD function, or some time later? If you are able to call readDWORD, what is the return value? If it fails, what is the error code?
Are you getting an exception, or does it just not work? If it's an exception, give me as much detail about it as you can (the type, the message, the code where it happened, etc. if possible).

Hi, I can't even build it, it doesn't recognize the command and makes a red line under it. I can reference the library, but not use any commands like ReadDWORD, WriteDWORD and so on. Screenshot is attached, this is happening if I load your EnableAllSideloading App, for example. With self-created projects I have the same problem. My system is Win 8.1 Pro x64 and I'm using Visual Studio 2013 Professional. Can you help me? Thanks!

Source code for EnableAllSideloading already has the requisite using directives...
When you look in the project's References, is the Registry library referenced correctly? By default it'll try to use a relative path that I use on my PC, but probably not the same path you use. You may need to manually adjust the reference, or delete it and re-create it.
Alternatively, what auto-fix options does Visual Studio give you when you click on those red lines?
