Two of my favorite games on PDA devices of all time were Slay, and Hex Wars.
I took a very quick look at Wargus, but the thing seemed quite slow, and the mouse cursor was out of alignment which I found irritating.
Simple games like Slay, and on the Palm, a game called Hex Wars were fantastic, and very involving, even though they were very simple. I like games that you can stop and start when you have a few minutes to kill. Realtime strategy games require more time to devote to them, so I never end up getting into them anymore.
So, what is good for a VGA display? Are there any turn based games anymore?
UFO
I just found "UFO: enemy unknown"
Wow, I feel 10 years younger now
lol, I gotta get that! link me!
I bought Pocket Slay yesterday, takes me back a few years, but it's still great fun
I love Slay. Had to not buy it just to retain my sanity and some time for programming lol.
However, Gears of Wars unfortunately beckons...

Heh i found SPB AirIslands real fun. Although its not really strategy and its QVGA. VGA I am going to try Slay as you say Alan. Also would you know of any other games? Age of Empires? Warcraft 3 lol i wonder if they make that for ppc. Slay sounds really like a brutal game. anyone know of GunBound? How about that really old school game WOLF 3D? Any car racing games like NFSCarbon. Wait now that i think of it my PSP has NFS Carbon. Maybe if we could install a game in the SD card and emulate it? Emulators anyone? I will donate the games if the emulator is ready.
Also has anyone tried mcafee antivirus on their ppc? I am wondering myself as to which antivirus should i choose. So far I havent had any problems on my ppc related to virus.

Is the island bigger in VGA mode. I find that everything is really cramped up in QVGA mode. I finished the game in 25 airisland days and i got freecell copy free. But it asked me if i want to continue with current island or make another island and i chose to make another island. How can i go back to the island i already finished? Is it gone deleted?

I only have the VGA version so I can't really tell you how it compares to the QVGA one. And unfortunately I haven't had it very long myself so I'm still on my first island and can't answer the other question either. It's always kind of looked like each island is one "play" of the game, so I was expecting to just move on from one to another. That's just my impression though since I haven't gotten to that point yet. They do have a website for the game itself (http://www.spbairislands.com/) that has a forum too, so maybe the answer can be found there.

I like games like SPB AirIslands and Age of empires Warcraft 3 WoW etc. I also prefer first person shooter games and tactical warfare. heh right now i only have Arkball 2 installed on my ppc. Its really fun, just keep going and see how far you can go.
So anyone know of any other good games?
So, you need real strategy (preferably Risk / Stratego / 15-20-year-old C64/Amiga SSI strategy-likes) games?
Read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=287321 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286689 for some more games (Warring Nations, Add-Venture , more info on Sean O'Connor's games, Napoleonix).

Come on - the current Pocket PC has problems even with emulating 12-year-old technoloy (PS One), and you want it to run games developed for current technology (PSP)?
It's like emulating an Amiga on a C64
i agree that it can't be done, but psp is not current technology.
half the games are psone ports!
So i believe that SLAY is the best game to play on the PPC?
It's subjective, personally I hated pacman, but it was the most popular game at one time.
Feel free to get your own opinions on what you like, and try things for yourself.

From personal opinion i like expensive/costly, takes up a lot of space and uses a lot of memory, excellent graphics and sound,
Thats the type of games i like. Any games out there for my Universal? Money is not a problem really.
Hi,
I have Age of Empires on my M5000 - It hasnt and probably wont be updated in a long time so isnt really WM5 compatible, however it runs fine with the only issue being memory leaks. It pays to save regularly as as some point during a long session the game may freeze due to lack of memory.
Warring Nations has a VGA version and is a very good turn based strategy game with additional maps available to download.
Favourites for me are Bejeweled2, Gamebox Solitaire, Sim City 2000, Pocket Sudoku, Jewel Hunter, Raging Thunder, Shanghai (Landware's) SkyForce, Skyforce Reloaded and Zuma.

Gaming-wise, it's very cool. However, it certainly lacks hi-res VGA support, multiplayer and music. That is, I'd definitely give a try to alternatives - see my games reviews here in the General forum.
Allright, after much trial and error. I have installed 72 thousand different games in my hermes, I have narrowed down all of the list to just a few.
OK, get these.
Age Of Empires Gold Edition - Woo gotta have it.
Flux Challenge - Kinda a space racing game, cool music, really showcases some of the potential cool graphics of the Hermes.
Pocket UFO - X-COM: UFO Enemy Unknown - It's absolutely free too! I can't stop playing this game, it is rated as the number 1 best game of all time by IGN magazine!!! http://pc.ign.com/articles/082/082403p1.html check it out. Honestly I HONESTLY LOVE THIS GAME.... Play it, you won't be able to stop, and it is free, you can find it anywhere on the interweb. EHEHHE
Pocket Nester - So cool, then I put every cool nintendo rom on my device (that I actually own of course hehehehe)
Snails v2.0 - Little worms clone type game, kinda fun
Tower Of Souls - Looks awesome, I havn't played it yet, but one day I will ehhehhe, a diablo style looking game.
Warring Nations - Looks really cool, kinda like Age of Empires
ScummVM - Lucasarts Emulator, I have actually seriously purchased all of the Scumm games ever made, I am a lucasarts freak, and they all work, even, Full Throttle, this is honestly one of the most amazing features of the Hermes! ehheeh. serious.
FreeSCI - Sierra SCI Emulator - Play Codename Iceman, Kings Quest 4-6, Space Quest 3-5, everything on the Hermes. Now the only problem with this emulator is it runs a little slow. I have however played Space Quest 3 without much of a problem. So nice.
Ok everyone, there has got to be a billion games out there, lets make a fun list... cuz why did we get a Hermes if it wasn't for anything else other than to show the stupid psp guy sitting next to you that he wasted his money.
Solitaire City - a Collection of card games with online hiscore, very addictive
-Kha
Hehe, nice list
I liked the scumm, thank you, I will definetly try these out ^^
And try out:
Arvale: Short Tales is a light Role Playing Game with Four separate stories to choose from. Now this is a real good game, the same maker has some really nice other role playing games
some games I play on my device are:
realdice multiplayer championship poker (you can also play this game over internet with eg umts or gprs)
astraware bejeweled 2
worms world party - awsome!
astraware zuma
spb arkaball
spb bubbles
I'm currently playing Syberia. An adventure with nice graphics.
From the graphics point of view, I still prefer TombRaider, which actually is an exact clone of the first part for the Playstation.
What is regarding the bragging in front of a PSP guy: Forget about it. I own a PSP and despite of its much higher graphics abilities (watch Wipeout and Syphon Filter), the controls and the screen are just better, period. Maybe one day the graphic capabilities of PPCs will be the same, but still, the handling and controls is just awful for many games. Some games are great with the touchscreen but for most games, the gameplay is crap.
Sometimes on the closet, PPC games are good, such as Kevtris, but for real gaming, I stick to my PSP or XBox.
Couple more to add to the list that I play a lot, all are not free/shareware i'm afraid:
Arvale II (PDAMill): Top down RPG with turn based battle system.
Multiplayer Championship Poker (Real Dice): Texas Hold 'Em over the net, has single player mode as well.
Monopoly (Handmark): Bit sad I know but it's a classic
SkyForce (Infinate Dreams): The definative screen scrolling shooter
Street Duel (Pixelogic): 3D Racer
Warfare Inc (Handmark): Great C&C clone. No net play but multiplayer over bluetooth. Think this a better choice over Strategic Assault
I also have Worms World Party, Tomb Raider and Flux Challenge but they have already been mentioned and I agree that they are a must have. Pocket UFO is wicked if your an old XCOM/UFO lover (ME!!) and as said in an earlier post it is completely free.
S.K.
KRally, Edge, Skyforce Unlimited, some 4Pockets and Inscenic titles, SuperTux, Gold Miner Joe - my personal picks from the last year.
Also make sure you check out my games reviews in the General forum here
I have a quick question...
What games are specifically multiplayer over the internet... is texas holdem the only one? this I think could be the coolest feature for some games like monopoly and what have you... but alas I think a lot of people would probably cut off because they would be at work or something... LOL
http://software.palminfocenter.com/product.asp?id=8859
Played with it a few minutes and bought it! If you try it put the 8525 on landscape before you launch the app. Its a little hard to move left and right with the joy stick but after a while it okay and the game is ver cool.

I dont think thats possible. you might be able to play old DOS games using
Dosbox. But im not sure.
My favourite game is Syberia. Definately the PPC. But 200MB heavy.
Then Riven and Myst, followed by Return to Mysterious Island.
Also good:
Ages of Empires Gold
Need For Speed
Brainstorm
Resco Diamonds
Quartz2
Warlords II
Doom
Anthelion
Argentum
Everquest Trilogy
Yahtzee (very fun)
Arvale 1 and 2
man, i have so many games, i dont know how to finish this list.
How do you guys get these old Windows/DOS games to work on your phone? I've got a BUNCH of them and would love to be able to play them again.
Although they are the same titles, they are especially rewritten/ported for PPC.
Some of them have just the executables ported, and use the same level/map/artwork files from the original CDs, so it's a good thing that you still have them.
But no, your Win/DOS collection won't work on PPC out of the box, but you could search for the titles on PocketPC gaming and software sites to find what your options are.
OK. Thanks for the info.

Pretty much forget them - it's only with selected games that emulation works (see for example Legend Entertainment's old adventures played on VGA Pocket PC's under Pocket DOS).
However, there're interpreters, whoich do interpret for example Lucasfilm and sierra games. Also see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1095219&postcount=8 and, of course, my articles ("General" forum here); I've published a lot of info on this question in my articles too.
Gamez Gamez Gamez!!!
Woo.. didn't realize people had such a passion for games.. thought it was just me!... Allright.. I am going to try all of these games posted here, for some reason, I baught Syberia and installed it on my HTC but it never actually worked, just figured I wasted my money and stuff... but that was with the Japanese-O rom on there, so I will try it again with the English rom and report back, I will update my games list in a couple days with a short review of each game. But still my number one favorite game thing.. is the Lucasarts Emulator ScummVM, honestly, it is perfect for a haldheld device. Even a couple games are free for it like Beneath a Steel Sky and something else I can't remember, get it, install it, then install day of the tenticle and sam&max hit the road... man o man.. are those games ever entertaining on the HTC, paired with a bluetooth wireless headset, it is just unbeatable. Next if we could just get the other Bluetooth stack runnning properly ... we would be set.. oh well.. i guess patience is a virtue.... or so my mom sayz.

I've just got KRally but am having problems with it on my MDA Vario II.
1) It doesn't seem to handle 2 button presses, e.g. if I'm accelerating and then turn (using hte d-pad), the car stops going until I press accelerate again!
2) using the stylus to steer causes pretty bad slowdown
Anyone got any suggestions on how to avoid either of these problems?
I've e-mailed their support but no word yet.
cheers
It seems that this is a known D-pad issue of Hermes. Combined with other hardware presses, D-pad behaves this way.
Some solutions would be:
- set auto acceleration AND auto turbo in K-Rally options, so you don't have to press other buttons except D-pad
- use arrow keys on the physical keyboard instead, they work ok combined with any other button (yes, K-Rally works great in landscape, too)
- map left-right in game options to other buttons (although I tried mapping them to softkey buttons and the game slowed to a crawl)
As reported on the net, the D-pad issue is known to HTC and maybe (hopefully) they will address it sometime:

I am interested in buying the Touch HD, yet i want to play certain games with my ppc.
I would like to know if anyone tested the HD with games and if so with which??
What about Myst I, Riven, Syberia I, II, Monopoly, Billiard Master 2, or others??
Additionally, anyone tested any of the known emulators such as Pocket Clive for the ZX Spectrum games or the SCUMMVM for the DOS games??
Thank you in advance for every answer...
I have the same question.
That's the only thing stopping me from buying the thing.
How does it handle Warcraft 2? Age of Empires?
Initially I doubt a lot of games will be compatible. But with a gorgeous 800x480 screen I have to imagine they'll be updating them to work. Also think of all the flash(.swf) games out there that will work better on 800x480 screens right out of the box.
A big problem will be the missing D-pad. Are there some solutions for this problem (for example GController or so)?
Pocket DOS
Actually I don't have my HD yet but I'm running Pocket DOS on my Hermes and on this it's no problem playing Master of Orion.
Ok you have to decide if you want to pay 1time 20€ for it or wait every 5 minutes for 15 sec. But i think wih the increase of RAM and CPU Power there should be no Problem to run DOS Games released till 1998.
I can give you a report after I finally got my touch hd.
Noone tried any games yet???????????
Hi everyone
I think we should transfer this question into this thread, dont we?

A key feature that I'm hoping the HD2 does well is emulation. Running morphgear on my Touch HD worked alright. You couldn't really get audio to sync or work right and framerate wasn't that great either. Now with the HD2 you got multitouch support and better hardware, so it should be an awesome experience. Has anybody tried running any emulation apps on the HD2 yet?
Also the TG01 plays PSX games flawlessly check out these links:

If you think that most of developers are going to make capacitive-like-games for windows mobile when only one device support it instead of putting their efforts on games for the iphone and android, you are going crazy.
^^ Second that! Don't keep your hopes up for any Multitouch based games for atleast another year.
Windows Mobile 7 might change that. But till then, its no use dreaming
I remember when xtract (or whatever it was called was released), this was such a fantastic game and showed what could be possible on the WM platform.
sadly, the popularity of the iphone means that most developers are working on apps for that phone instead. The main reason behind this is that every developer knows almost exactly what he will have to work with on an iphone. With WM there are too many variations of screen resolution to consider, memory restrictions etc
in addition, the relatively high cost of apps on WM (compared to the thousands of 0.59p for iphone)means that they don't sell quite so many and the demand isn't there.
it's sad, but this is perhaps the reason that WM is dying as a platform.
I saw an article the other day that said that itunes had hit the 100,000 mark for apps. I think that's an increase of about 25,000 apps in a single year. WM cannot even get close to that figure..
Well, out of those 100,000 apps 99,900 are useless fart apps and such, not the kind of games we are talking about here. App Store allows you to sell whatever you want and since there's no return policy you can have people paying for your app, no matter if it is good or not.
This is not to say there are no great games for the iPhone of course! Yet the mere number of apps there isn't really an indicator of quality.
you're right ( I question your accuracy though )
but the point is, that people are spending time creating 'useless' apps for the iphone....very few people are creating anything for WM

I think we do need to make some difference between a big number, and quality programs... How many programs are not just total useless "fart" and other idiotic crap programs.
Its easy to claim that they have 100.000 programs, when most are close to useless.
SnooPPP:
You forgot to post a more recent one. This one showes the touchscreen in action on the TG01, with the overlay:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MHCQiT6e54
Its actually kinda playable just using a Single Touch Resistive screen.
A quick look at the forum of the FpseCE emulator shows that people are interested in the HD2.
People here question if its useful for developers to create games for a single platform. But, the specs for WM7 are know. They know that every device in the future will have at minimum, the same specs as the HTC HD2, to be compatible with the WM7 OS. So, for many developers the HTC HD2 will probable be a nice development / testing platform for the future.
Also, when looking at the PSX emulator, that now on a Snapdragon can play about every PSX game... This is a game library of? How many hundred games? Including hits like FF7, etc ...
What about the N64 emulator that they are porting for the openPandora project, on a TI OMAP 3430? When the source is released and recompiled for WM, you can expect to also that game library...
This is what im really excited about, FpSECE on the HD2 will be amazing, it just needs either multitouch support or we need a controller we can use with the HD2.

That's a bit like arguing that there's no point in putting a camera into a phone because, when you travel, you don't mind taking a camera with you. That may be true as far as it goes; but having a camera in your phone becomes useful in situations where you didn't know in advance that you were going to need a camera and then suddenly realise that you do - conveniently, you just happen to have one with you because it's built into a device that you automatically carry with you at all times. The same applies to gaming on a phone: it's useful in situations where you didn't know in advance that you were going to want a gaming device.
You also have to ask: even if you are willing to pack a separate portable console, are you willing to pack a portable games console, a phone, an MP3 player, a mobile web browsing device, a mobile email terminal, a dedicated satnav device, and a portable video player? That's quite a lot to fit in your trouser pockets. There's a lot to be said for combining multiple devices into the same box.

You forgot to mention all the chargers too
It's not like chargers take that much space... it's just one small bag. Besides, nowadays there are these universal extensions and what not if I'm correct if you really mind taking multiple chargers with you. Furthermore, if you have one device which you use for everything, you're gonna need to charge it more often, while this is not the case when using multiple devices, just to make clear that having an all-in-one device is not as heavenly as it might seem (or you're gonna have to take ALL those multiple batteries with you ).
Also, comparing taking a picture and gaming with and on a phone is not entirely just, because when one wants to game, he/she has to sit down and put time into gaming, while taking a snapshot is almost instant. What I'm trying to say is that when someone is playing a full blown 3D game (which is what is actually discussed here instead of patience, minesweeper or whatever), that person wants to put in time to focus on the game. In this case it's much better to use a dedicated device and not some emulator on a phone to play ps1 games while draining your battery life. And yes, if someone wants to take beautiful high resolution pictures, that person will take a quality camera with him/her.
Eventually it all comes down to preference I guess...
Any good games out for the HTC HD2? Looked at the market place and wasn't sure whta to pick!!
Xtract , Experiment 13 , Electropia are really good !!
Resco Bubbles also a nice 1 .
i also still looking for games
i saw prince of persia hd in the windows market place but i cant say anything about hat.
So far the rendering of the 3D RPG games like Prince of Persia leave a lot to be desired on the HD2. If you compare the games on the iphone, you will be very disappointed.
There is a reason for this though, and I think we just need to wait for the developers to catch up as the WinWo games are designed for lower spec and older phones, whereas the iPhone developers have one sole platform to develope against, with their games working on all iphones.
Yes well i have just gone from an iphone to HTC HD2 to be honest i thought there will be more. But overall the phone does win over the iphone just not (yet) in the games department which is a shame because i can imagine this being a beast +looking good on a bigger screen

Where did you download this from? I see a lot of cabs when I google, but I don't really know any of the websites... can you vouch for one of them?
Zenonia....
It is also available on the iPhone but available through Handango and Windows Marketplace (UK at least) for the HD2.
Phenomenal little old Zelda-type game which controls well on the HD2. I am on 1.43 and have not installed any sensitivity reduction cab. I personally feel that if the sensitivity reduction cab would make the experience more enjoyable as fine motor movement in-game can be fiddly.
I have major problems hitting the quick slot keys too which is disappointing.
Overall an 8/10.
