From a Newbie - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

I just received a new O2 XDA II...New in the box.
Its from England...I think. Anyhow, it will NOT work with my USA T-mobile sim card. I downloaded the XDA Developers XDA2UNLOCK tool v1.2. My first problem is I don't know what the "Action" button is. I read the "users guide", but was unable to locate the Action button.... however, I did find the Power button. LOL
The XDA Developers XDA2UNLOCK software mentions "Backing up your data." Will this operation wipeout the Windows operation system or just the saved data? Since its new and I have not put anything in the device, will I be OK?
I'm old and not too computer literate. Had I know that this device would not work in the US with T-Mobile, I would not have bought it. But now that I have it, I'm will to try and get it unlocked and up and running.
If someone is willing to help me through this, I would be glad to pay you for your time.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

I think the "Action" button is the centre of the rocker (directional) button between the green and red phone buttons under the Xda II logo.
As for backing up your data this is the precaution you should take when upgrading or changing anythng that uses the operating system and is usually a good habit to do regularly anyway. Since this is new then you should be ok anyway.

Crashed!!!!
What is being displayed on the screen?
Are you able to use your XDA at all?
Will it still connect to your PC via ActiveSync?
the answer to all those questions is no....
no activesync
no using the xda
the only thing that is being displayed is the startup o2 sign and in the left hand bottom corner it says
g
r
s 31.85834 (or some number)
and then it goes to a blank white page.....
it keeps swapping back and forth from these two pages
thanks
jay
Are you able to get into the bootloader?
press and hold to on/off button while soft-resetting.
Do you have a SD card reader?
Also, where did you get the xda from, just incase!?!
im gonna try the bootloader thing....but what do i do if it works (im waiting for it to charge up abit before i do that) although i dont think it is charging
i dont have a sd card yet....
o2 online....i have insurance, i think (hope) they will change it....but im going away tommorow for 4 weeks....and im stuck without a phone...so i wanted to know if there was a way that i could reinstall it again...
thanks again york for your help
jay
hey yeah i can get to bootloader
wallaby bootloader v5.22
what do i do?
it siad there is a gsm erorr?
thanks
jay
Right, well it's a start, unfortunatly without an SD card reader there is nothing that I know that will fix this problem, as you cannot use Activesync without the os loading.
I've had a quick look around the forums but all related articles on fixes suggest the need for a card reader.
When you did the upgrade, did you remember to remove the power supply first?.
It seems that leaving the power supply attached while upgrading the radio causes an internal configuration error.
If no one else here can help with your problem, you will have to send it back to O2, they will replace it for new, however, if they do kick up a fuss, remind them of the Sale of Goods Act (Amendment) 2003.
Sorry, that's about as much as I can do mate. Good luck, and don't be but off the xda by this problem, I got mine of ebay and broke the screen within a week, had to fork out another £130 for a new screen, but I'm very glad I did.
ok thanks york......
i will give o2 a call.....
thanks

Great now press the Calender button, that should put you in the GSM
bootloader mode. From there run some of the options ect.., try changing your band to 900 and see if that helps also try turning the radio off as that might let your XDA bootup.
hi....i tried that and it kep saying....
gsm turn ON fail!!
any more ideas?
thanks

Decided to upgrade the ROM, this is where my trouble started

Please help if you can this is my first post on the site I had a look to see if anyone ells has had the same problem but did not se anything I understood to be the same.
I have been offered a XDA that has these symptoms and have decided it’s best to ask the pros before parting with £120.00 of my hard earned cash.
The information given to me is this:
“I decided to upgrade the ROM It all seemed to be going well then it just stopped loading and now the XDA wont do anything and the screen just says “UPGRADING IT WILL TAKE ABOUT 5 MINUTES” WARNING NOT TO REMOVE CONNECTIONS”
I will do my best to get additional information if required
Thanks for the time.
WOP
This is a typical situation of a failed ROM update ...
Can you get the bootloader screen (power + soft reset) ? and what version you read (5.15 , 5.17, 6.22 .... etc)
If you can get the bootloader screen with "GSM Ok", the chances are high that you can get this XDA working again using SD flashing method.
Try to get back with more info.
It is probably a good xda. All you probably need is an sd card and this forum. But meanwhile press the guy a little more. 100 will not be such a bad idea.
is £120.00 for an XDA good if it works?
I have emailed the chap with the request and am awaiting a reply from him :?:
I will also try and get the extra £20 off thanks for the hint
But let me make sure I have this write can you damaged hardware on these items when playing around with the software:?:
Or can you simply just reinstall all the software and drivers like a PC :?:

The answer is YES!! ... you can read many stories here about people ended up with a nice $200 worthy paper weight!!! ... but being carful it can be a joyful experience
This is the latest saga to this story
I am officially a real member now as I have paid out my £120.00 for this xda and now the fun really begins
Because I have no idea how to fix it
I was asked to check if it did certain things and the answer to that question is yes the information I have is this bootloader page displays GSM OK
And we have V5.15 installed I hope this means something to someone out there in the XDA world.
If you would like to help me be gentile as I am still virginal when it comes to these things but I have some PC experience and am willing to make an ass of myself
Please do not lead me in the wrong direction as Biso007 says you can read many stories here about people ended up with a nice $200 worthy paper weight!!! And that’s not good
Get yourself an sd memory card and a memory card reader writer, download xdatools, go look at www.yorch.net or http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/ have a good look around the site before trying anything. I was going to buy that xda but he stipulated "no returns" so I gave it a miss, I think it will probably be ok but I was a bit puzzled as to why the guy didnt fix it himself.
How when why and where
These are the questions I will problem be asking for a while I have received the item and in its normal mode it has lines all over the screen with two rectangular boxes going long ways across the screed these are clear.
I have done a hard reset and have it shows this wallaby bootloader v5.15 on a white red green and blue screen at the bottom left hand side it has GSM OK when you hit the action key it runs some tests I collated this information most thing got the thumbs up but some did not SIR RX error and RTS-CTS err come up and froze the system.
Can this one be fixed or do I have a door stop.
If it cam be fixed Can I download the XDAtools on this site?
If you pass your mouse over this link xdatools you will get a box pop up, scroll down and click on download, use the sd flash method and good luck.
can i :?:
Hi cruisin thru
Thanks for the directions you have pointed me in found the tools and have down loaded them.
As I have a working XDA and an sd card available to me buy no card reader/writer available at the moment is it possible to download the correct files from a working XDA to one that is not working via an sd card or the cradle or some form of direct link?
regards[/b]
Yes. You can dump the rom from a living XDA to an SD card via the bootloader. However there is a caveat. The living XDA may suffer a hard reset, so you must ensure a full back up. Put your SD card, preferably 64mb into the living XDA, go into the bootloader and when you get GSM OK hit the upper left button (Calendar Button) and select CE Rom to SD. Leave the system until it is completed. Then pop your SD into the dead XDA and enter the bootloader the usual way. If your card is okay, the rom should be recognised and you will be prompted to download rom. Follow the instructions, the rest is easy. Good luck.
back in a tick
Sorry I have not got back to you in a bit I was waiting for my sd card to arrive from the USA.
I think I got quite a good deal just over £40 including P&P for a 256 what do you think?
I will try what you mentioned in the last post and once I’m done I will let you guys know how it went.
Any last minute advice from the professionals out there?
O my god
What can I say I now have 2 working XDA’S with loads of memory that will let me put any sim card in and I
thank all those that helped me to solve this problem and those that set up this fables site well done to you all
I have one more question to ask?
 WHAT CAN I TRY NEXT

Pointers required for removing slow O2 software (please!)

Hi guys, great forum.
I must admit to being rather nieve and lost in all the technical stuff! Im a newbie to the XDA world, and so far Im loving it!
I bought my O2 XDA mini s on ebay, at just over 2 months old. Its in perfect condition, but when I try to remove the O2 software, it's not on the list... but its definately still on there!
Should I let my battery run out and reboot it?
Also it wont link with the outlook on my pc (installed from the cd) so it looks like its gonna take me 3 weeks of typing to put all my contacts in to it!
Can someone point me in the right direction for a thread? Or is there a good site for newbies to look at in layman's terms?
Any help would be extremely well recieved!
Cheers
Hi Gary
sorry mate can't help but noticed your post had no answer. Like you I am not a techie. Most of the posters on here seem to do nothing but experiment with their XDA's all day There is a wealh of info and help but sadly only useful to other techies.
There doesn't appear to be anything geared at assisting casual users and non techies that have neither the time or inclination to fiddle with ROM's and software etc .
I reckon that would be a useful sticky for noobs- like how to change/ customise the desktop and install various A/V software and remove o2 software etc
Suggest you get the full manual and wade through that.
I bought my o2 mini s at xmas and haven't made a single call on it yet . Its far too complicated for me and working 12 hour days I've no time to play about with it.
I'm no techy either but I do know that if you do a hard reset and choose corporate install the O2 stuff is not installed. There's some good advice here too - it's maybe a bit less technical than this site.

Cheers for the replys Dave and Peanut.
I managed to find something useful here... http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=287641
if theres anyone else thats confused about this stuff.
I'm really happy with mine, on the whole it seems pretty simple to use. I hate that it doesnt close programmes when you click the x though.
Im gonna have a little play, but I'll need to get my mms and gprs info from orange first if i install the corporate profile.
I find that if the phone is on for more than 5 mins ifI press the green call button it doesnt bring up the phone screen, even with the normal power setting! I'm hoping this new profile will speed the bad boy up a bit too!
WiFi is a godsend on a mobile! Yey!
Without going through all the palava of flashing a new Rom the easiest way of really removing the O2 crud is to do a Hard Reset of the device (hold the Com Manager and Voice Command buttons the poke the little reset hole on the right hand side of the unit.
When you get the option select corporate installation option and then if I remember correctly you get a count down, press the reset button (without the other two buttons) again briefly to do a soft reset this should then start Windows in its regular non O2 sullied form.
Hope this helped.

Help needed , HTC Touch screen error!

Ok first of all a big hi to this great community (xda team) and users.
Im new to this stuff but im in need for a little help, and i hope someone is willing to help me.
I have HTC Touch and im having problems with it. Its broken now it doesn't work. Not to forget to mention the phone i own is chinese made, which means i think is not the original one (even it looks and acts like the real one).
After modifying some phone applications, by installing tweaks and applications i found on internet, i installed some modified Keypad application, and after using it a while, one day it stopped responding and instead of showing Number keys, it only showed black buttons. SO i tried to uninstall it and after successful uninstall i restarted the phone but it showed me the screen aligning thing and i did what was required it booted but was not working properly. so i did several reboots, and then even tried reseting it. after several tries im now stuck on screen error.
I uploaded two videos on youtube how the screen gets mixed and the other problem, hard reset won't work on my device.
Links to videos:
video 1:

video 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0DyOiw7Pkw
i would be very happy if anyone could tell me what to do with my device.
PS. Im newbie so i might need some simple instructions if possible.
Thanks in advance.
No one cant help???
I hope someone is willing to give me some instructions...please!!!
Best regards. Gjizaqin
Very strange.
I havent seen any so unhelpfull forum like this :-( im really sad.
I posted the thread asked for help, explained the thing in the best way i could, and no single reply even the one "we can't help" would be nice to see.
Update to my post:
Im writing this with idea of helping others and pointing people to right direction. After maby 1 month of hard exploring i repaired my htc touch (chinese clone)
The phone im using is also known as Elf0100.
So how i fixed the problem:
After trying many many times the standard Hard reset method (Send, stop keys pressed and presing soft reset button with stylus) this method doesn't work with chinese htc clones. So anyone out there having Chinese Htc clone, the right method for doing Hard Reset is: Hold Volume Up & Camera Key pressed, and press Reset button for about 3 seconds without releasing Volume up and camera buttons. After that you should get blue screen, and in the top screen will be shown "Boot loading, hard reset, or something like that im not very sure".
Anyways if you have your Windows mobile damaged (like the one i had), you can repair it with the following method:
1. Download the manufactured version of Windows (or maby this is called ROM) from this site.
2. Format your HTC memory card (Micro SD card), so it will be clean.
3. Move the update.img (you already downloaded from the site) to root directory of your Memory card.
4. Press Volume Up button on your htc and while keeping it pressed , press the reset button.
You should get the blue screen telling the update being downloaded. Wait for a while and it will tell that Update is successfull and your phone will be rebooted.
THis is it.
Although i didnt get any help from this forum, i know i might help others cause this is most frequent place regarding PPC.
Best regards to all.

Hi gjizaqin,
I feel sorry you lost valuable time looking for an answer to your problem (and found it alone !) but I think you are too hasty to blame this forum. I am myself quite new here and I've already learnt so much using the "search". For instance I found another remark of yours in another thread and also found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2466074#post2466074 where you have your answer
Another reason is the title of your thread Help needed , HTC Touch screen error! like me probably others understood you have a technical problem with your screen (broken or damaged) and nobody could help you but repair shop...
I trust you'll continue contributing here because your last post proves you're a gentleman.
All the best !!!

Thanks for your reply tito12,
Anyways its nice forum but not very newbie frendly. I guess the way I wrote this thing will be much easier for any newbie to fix his china htc, without talking too much about roms, loaders etc etc, wich is very confusing for newbies (like me and others).
I thought it was screen problem cause my htc was getting some messy colors while loading (you can see it in the video i provided). And i stated "unhellpfull forum" by keeping in mind that more than 200 people viewed the thread, and not even single one said simply : "i have no idea, or sorry" so i know someone will try to help me out.
Anyways as a owner of HTC I will still contribute to this forum, in the way I can but words I wrote could be some kind of newbie impressions.
Best regards to all.
Sorry to see no one could help you out - maybe its because its a clone and most users here have real genuine ones? Anyway its great to see you got it fixed and stick with the forums as I am sure you will learn a lot from them and soemtimes get an answer. I find that hardware questions dont get many responses but if you go into say a skinning forum you will get more replies.

[Q] Sneaking Past Motoblur With No Mobile Internet Connection

OK I've dumped a TLDR above but the story behind it is below for 'context' (and also as an coffession)
TLDR
Is it possible to get past motoblur with no internet/cell phone connection
Storytime with a wannabe tech
I bought the defy in Hong Kong from a shady businessman while living in China. My wife and I moved back to NZ but when I got back I discovered that with the China unicom baseband it would only operate in Auckland, Whangarei and basically only the major cities.
I eventually got another phone but then discovered the joys of the baseband switcher and used a baseband from one of the Australian networks.
I decided I wanted to upgrade to Android 4.1 at the start of the year and, deciding that I wasn't sufficiently tech savvy and didn't have the time to install a custom rom I purchased another phone and gave the defy to my father to bring him into the 21st century. I even wiped my details and set up a new motoblur account for him. He put in the password and then forgot to write it down or even remember it.
Fastforward to 11 months later when, for some reason the baseband stops working.
I'm trying to get into the phone to tutu with the baseband. The SIM card has been removed so I need to get past motobrrrr and, because the reception is up the wop I can't get past.
What should I do? I think it's flashed but not rooted and ideally I'd like to stick a more up to date rom/SDK on it than 2.2/2.3 but first I need to get to it.
Suggestions?
Are you sure there's no skip option? I have a hazy recollection of that being there. If not, the easiest way forward is flashing one of those premade sbfs, which you can find in the dev section. That should get the phone running a legacy version of cm10, from where you can upgrade easily

I've done some hunting round the phone and can't find the skip option. I did find where I could turn the wifi on without worrying about the password (just h\it the menu button if anybody is looking for it in the future) but a trip to motobrrrs portal disavows any knowledge of my account or my father's account so I guess I'll find a SBF.
Thanks for your help with this.
UPDATE DOING A HARD RESET On a defy
SO I bit the bullet and worked through motoblur with a motorolla customer service rep.
If anybody finds themselves in the unenviable position that I've found myself in (unlikely given the age of the phone and the tech level of everybody here)
This is how you get out of it:
Motorola Defy Hard Reset Instruction
1. Please turn off the phone.
2. Press and hold "volume down" key, then power up.
3. The robot screen will show
4. Touch bottom right corner of the screen. (Press Volume UP and Volume DOWN together)
5. Use the Volume key to navigate the menu to Wipe Data/Factory reset.
6. Tap ‘Ok’ on the screen ( Press on the POWER button to confirm)
7. Use the Volume key to navigate the menu to ok delete.
8. Tap ‘Ok’ on the screen (Bottom left)
9. When done ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted, tap ‘Ok’ to restart phone.
Rep: This will delete everything stored on the phone's internal memory okay?
Me: OK formatting now
Me: rebooting
Rep: Okay.
Me: OK I'm in motoblur
Me: the language is Chinese
Communication with the RightNow Chat service has been lost. Please wait while attempts are made to restore the connection.
Disconnection in 240 seconds.
Connection resumed.
Rep: Is there an option to change it?
Me: yes it's english now
Me: Im in set up a wifi connenction
Rep: Okay. Hopefully it will work.
Me: register new account or use existing
Me: will it recall xxxxxxxxx now?
Rep: Use existing please.
Me: OK
Rep: You can try.
Me: OK tried xxxxxxx and it's telling me this account doesn't exist on blur
Me: I'll set it up again if that's the case
Rep: Yes please.
Me: OK got through to the welcome aboard crap
Rep: Okay.
Me: Thanks for your help
Rep: No worries .
Me: so what baseband will this be working off
Me: will I need to track down another Australian baseband?
Rep: I can't answer that since it's released in the US.
Me: OK I'll take that as a yes
Me: thanks heaps
