I've just received a pair of 9100's from Expansys for me and the Mrs (I couldn't stand the look of torment on her face as she pecked SMS messages out on her old 6310 any longer) and, with trepidation installed AS4.0 over the old, trusty 3.7.1 or 3.8... Result... sh4gged...
On my laptop, I added rules to Sygate, tweaked connection manager, re-installed and patched Outlook, upgraded to 4.1 and everything else I could think of and it's still broke. It hangs on the Retrieving Settings bit. Curiously, even with it stuck, pending installs actually get installed...
On the work laptop where we mere users are policy'd out of everything it didn't get that far as the desktop security settings weren't having any TCP over Ethernet over USB at all.
Anyway, stroke of inspiration (and apologies if you guys already knew this) activated ActiveSync over IR on the 9100, pointed it at the laptop's IR port and bingo... All sync'd up without a whiff of a complaint or lock-up.
It looks very much like MicroSoft's desire to make the USB's old Point to Point IP link look like a real network interface in a world were network interfaces are mostly policed and firewalled to death is the problem, rather than ActiveSync 4 itself. Now, on my work laptop, my hx4700 will ActiveSync over AS4.1 on USB and the 9100 will do it over IR.
Shame my own laptop has no IR port otherwise I'd be happy (until MS fix the thing properly). Might try with my BT dongle instead.
Anyway, hope this if use to somebody out there...
Found the below in a German IT news ticker.
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/65210
It basiccaly says, that MS confirms Active Sync 4 problems with Firewalls, and plans to have a new fixed Active Sync Software by the end of Nov.
They also reccon to open TCP-Ports 990, 999, 5678, 5679, 5721 and 26675 in the Firewall to make it work until the fixed version is ready.
I have read a lot of the comments on ActiveSync 4.1 and the different things to try to get it to connect over USB ... I'm amazed!
I've Just 'upgraded' from a XDAIIs with ActiveSync 3.8 and used to have this connected all day on my desktop at work via USB cradle and sync over WiFi at home.
Very dissapointed at the moment ... was shocked to see that sync over WiFi is not supported (and I don't have BlueTooth and don't want a dongle) I've tried loads of suggestions from here ... disable firewalls, ensure TCP/IP setting correct etc and nothing seems to work.
The only thing I have found is that the XDA Mini S needs to be 100% charged and have a green light when connected to the USB cable, The USB 'not' connected to a hub (unlike my XDAIIs) and ActiveSync NOT running on the Mini S (i.e. perform a soft reset or use task manager)
Then ... and only then can I get it to sync ONCE. That combined with 'NO' cradle makes it a pretty useless business device unless you run a sync server.
ActiveSync 4.1 and Mobile5 have even stopped me from syncing my XDAIIs as a 'guest device' as ActiveSync 3.8 is not allowed to be kept on the laptop
I'm not even going to venture into installing TomTom on this! I'm sure thats a whole new kettle of fish!
if anyone has any further suggestions I'd be gratefull .... otherwise, here's hoping a future ActiveSync 5 or Mobile5 ROM upgrade is going to sort all of these issues.
Rich
Mine worked by enabling my local area connection although i have no local network, my laptop has a socket and windows firewall is disabled and zone labs firewall = added activesync to list of accepted programs. Works every time now
I could get my TyTn to sync with my computer occasionally after installing AS 4.2, but ActiveSync would still disconnect itself from my device after a few minutes (I could get it to sync most times though, but I'd have to shuffle round USB ports etc)... Installed ActiveSync 4.5.0 beta (build 5509 BETA) last night, and now my phone won't sync AT ALL with my PC. AS can't even see the device, it can see it's been plugged in because it kicks into action, but nothing more ever happens apart from the (useless) Troubleshooter coming up.
Just a word of warning... Don't install 4.5 beta unless you're absolutely certain it'll work. I've gone from a somewhat-functional sync ability to absolutely nothing at all, and now I'm going to have to rollback my ActiveSync installation (if I can!)
That and the fact my TyTn won't even see my bluetooth headset (an Avro GW-BT-002, which my Alpine can both see and use absolutely fine), I'm beginning to get a little frustrated with this device.
Further proof that more often than not:
BETA = BROKEN
I've had the beta AS 4.5 for a week now and no problems whatsoever with dopod CHT9000 (hardware) using latest i-mate, dopod, or cingular ROM's.
All of these ROM's all work perfectly with sony-ericsson hbh-ds970 bluetooth headset.
After you upgraded to 4.5, did you delete your PC from the activesync partnership and rebuild a new partnership?
* Activesync > Options > press on desktop computer's name and delete it. Then, delete mobile device from desktop AS. You'll then be asked if you want to keep your file directory. Afterwards, reboot pocketpc and connect with usb cable or over bt.
It does work.
Cheers
Yep, did exactly that.
AS 4.5 works perfect with my prophet.
Issues:
Had to set-up my device again (old settings disappeared)
All programs that I installed via active sync before were gone
Top:
Improved speed of syncing files
Easier change of settings
Robin
Hmm. Beginning to wonder if I have either a dodge device, because my Alpine always synced fine
4.5 works for me with my TyTN. (slow as hell - but works).
/Martin
I can't get it to work, either. It completely blew away my partnerships...
I've gone back to AS4.2 and will wait for this to go GA before making this mistake again...
Dopod 838 Pro
Worked a treat on mine. No issues whatsoever. Biggest difference I can see is a different looking AS icon
Bloody hell...
... Beginning to think it's my computer, might end up reinstalling Windows on it this weekend. Annoyinggggggggg.
After a crap installation of AS4.5, downgraded back to 4.2, but it's still not seeing my TyTn at all, so I'm figuring that it's more likely to be a PC problem. It's not the best Windows installation either, it's become bogged down with stuff, and it never worked right after I made a couple of 'tweaks'... That's me, always fiddling with things when they work fine in the first place
I'm having similar issues with my TyTN, installed 4.5 on my PC, plug in my PDA and it starts charging (via USB) but ActiveSync can't find it, although does state that USB is available, just keeps searching?!
ActiveSync needs rebuilding from the floor, its always been a rather 'naff' featureless product.

I had the same problem. Hard reset of my XDA Exec and it worked. draw yor own conclusions.
Have you tried turning off the "USB advanced network functionality" - this seemed to sort the same problem out for me;
go start - settings - connections - USB to PC - untick box "Enable advanced network functionality"
You are aware that AS 4,5 REQUIRES Outlook 2003 !?!?
otherwise it will not work at all
That beta works fine. The only problem I've had is related to remote NDIS interfering with my soft firewall, even after all access rules allowing it. Only workaround is to disable smart ARP filtering in Outpost Firewall or change transfer mode of phone to Serial and everythin is gravy for sync.
Your problem seems related to device manager misconfig of the device or something else.
why don't you try this from start --> run --> cmd line
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
start devmgmt.msc
Then, once device manager loads, click view --> show hidden devices. From there, scroll down to network adapters, expand, and delete any instance of Windows Mobile-based Device. On the phone, delete Activesync relationship with PC. Then reboot computer, and plug in your phone again. Let us know if that solved your problem.
I had numerous issues with AS4.2 and AS4.5 Beta initially. And I had issues with Vista RC2 (both x64 and x86) syncing with the WMDC B3 as well.
Then it dawned on me that I was connecting my 838pro to the computer via a Belkin USB hub. So I removed the sync cable from the hub and directly attached to the computer. Now I have no more problems whatsoever (that's in the past 2 weeks.....)
So the moral is: DIRECTLY CONNECT YOUR Hermes TO THE COMPUTER'S USB PORTS!
Just put AS4.5B2 on today - no real probs - no real improvements

Hi christopherwoods
I am sorry if this is the wrong forum but its the only one I could find with reference to my bluetooth headset.
I am the owner of an Avro GW-BT-002 bluetooth headset which was free with my old mobi. Unfortunately I can no longer remember how to set it up or any of the other settings to use with my new Motorola V3x 3G phone. Is there any possiblity that you could post the instructions of its settings etc to this forum for me.
Many many thanks
Craeg
Same Issue - Fixed
I had a problem with ActiveSync after upgrading to 4.2.
I am now running 4.5B and it is working after deleting prior partnerships from my handheld.
(I am running Outlook 2007)
ActiveSync 4.5 finally working!
I had the same problems with ActiveSync 4.5 (beta) until I actually put in the original install disk I had with the phone (it had ActiveSync 3.7 on it) when I first tried to connect my phone and it wouldn't detect it. 4.5 (beta) is now working fine for me!
Hello, and thanks in adance for any help
My Magician (ROM 1.13) is no longer recognised by my PC when I connect it via USB.
The device charges, but It does not connect to sync.
PPC Activesync doe have an error rmessage;
"Verify your dialup or proxy settings"
• I have tried all the suggestions from MS Troubleshooting
• I have tried all the suggestions on this and other forums.
• I have tried disabling Firewall (Kerio)
• I have tried with upgrade to Activesync 4.5 (was previously trying with 3.8)
Coincidence? The PPC failed to connect after I installed SonicStage, and plugged in a friends MD player into the same USB cable.
?? I would have liked to try rolling back USB drivers - though not entirely sure which ones - MS Device Manager not very helpful in describing what USB controllers are actually for (i.e. USB Composite Device?) ... however
• I tried restoring PC to an earlier state via Ghost (to a point I know the connection worked) but still no joy.
So I am now conerned it may be a problem with the connection manager on the Magician itself.
I don't want to hard reset just yet because I need to sync (an have little faith/experience with xBackup - which just took close to 1 hour)
Any help/pointers most appreciated
===========================
I've been using the Magician for 1.5 years, pretty successfully - consider myself fairly adept in IT, though not a hardcore coder.
But his has me stumped.
argh double post
yup i had this happen a few times, totally ticked me off.
try deleting your activesync profile and re-syncing, backup ur contacts etc first in outlook on the pc side just to make sure you dont over sync something.
other than that id say a hard reset is on the cards
double post
I always try due-diligence in researching answers before posting for help.
UPDATE
I didn't mention the specifics of my trials, but I had tried deleting the partnership in Activesync, but the problem is that my Magician just doesn't connect.
I did a hard reset, and Ghosted my PC back, but even in this "virgin" setup the Magician doesn't connect.
Am pleased that xBackup did work completely - restored everything including installed apps and settings. Small comfort.
Am now convinced that the problem is with the mini-USB port on my Magician.
Will be sending it back under 2Year warranty.
I'd like to use Activesync 4.5 to synchronize my X1i with MS Outlook content (calendar, contacts, etc.) on my PC. My PC does not host MS Exchange. Is it possible to set this synchronization up over WLAN/wifi? I got it running already with USB and Bluetooth, but the range of my Bluetooth connection is very poor in comparison with my WLAN (which consists of several access points). I noticed a workaround for older versions of PocketPC and Activesync, but it seems obsolete.
Active Sync 4.5 - WLAN - Not going !!
Really there is no way? Virtual COMs or something ?
sorry cant help you but maybe you can help me. how did you get bluetooth active synch working.
what operating system are you running? im still running windows 2000. i got a computer running xp and another one running vista basic and i could not get my x1a to synch up via bluetooth.
i think active sync 3.8 was the last version that allawed to connect to pc over wifi. MS stopped it for security reasons. bluetooth is the nexy option
