hi
I'm working in a job that has me utilizing this device continually and speed to info is everything!
Can you inform this newb as to ways to set up my Hermes to maximize data speed? Appreciated!
Also....I see the Hermes Tweaks download has a Hsdpa enabled function...BUT....if Hsdpa is enabled by default......why would anyone ever need this app??!
Thanks

I assume you are using WM5, if not, I don't know if the settings are the same with WM6, haven't got the guts to try it on my Apache XV6700.
You can always turn off the EVDO and always stay on 1X whenever you need it, and change it back to Hybrid when you need to use both EVDO & 1X.
Start - Settings - Phone - Services - (Scroll Down to) Mode of Operation - Select EVDO (for EVDO Only) or Hybrid (for EVDO & 1X).
I wish there's some kind of batch file script or macro script that can simulate our taps... well it's like 7 taps away to change the mode of operation, not to mention waiting the device to soft reset.

this work for wifi ?
does htc hd2 supports wifi n type i heared it does via reg edit but if it does why it is not listed in the specifications like what is listed in nexus one specifications and how to test it
you can enable it in BsB Tweaks

Apparently it does, yes. You can enable it with a registry tweak, but it's also an option in BsB Tweaks, which is obviously easier.
I couldn't tell you why it's not listed. Maybe they ran out of testing time before the release deadline and decided to just turn it off instead. They could always give us a hotfix at a later date and call it a new feature
Who knows!
How to test it? Make sure you've got a wireless-N router and just test your speed on the phone with it on and off. It should be pretty apparent. (Obviously, it will make no difference unless you have a wireless-N router).

Ive done the tweak and it has no adverse effects. I simply don't get any benefit as I don't have a wireless-N router.
Do you have one?

yes but my internet speed does not help mee do benifit of the n wifi
I will wait to be corrected but Wireless N offers much faster connection speeds - but only with your wireless router. If your bottleneck in Internet connection speed is your home based ADSL connection (which is normally FAR slower than any normal wifi connection - even a poor one) then you will see few if any benefits of Wireless N.
However, there are other factors and you may see more stable HD2-Router WiFi connections and greater range on connection - but if those were not previously problems then you may l see no advantage at all.
Some reports seem to indicate Wireless N on the HD2 uses more power on the handset - but that seems only to be implied rather than supported by any evidence at present.
Give it a try. The BsB software makes the Registry change for you and is easy to undo if you wish too.
I can confirm that after 2 weeks of testing the wireless N on the HD2, the speed is grater. I can notice the difference in loading times. I suggest you apply the tweak and don't worry, it won't cause any harm to your device.

thanks for the advice
it seems it cant detect my 5ghz router
Copying files across my wireless-N network seems much faster with this tweak on. However, I don't have any figures to back up my hunch.
Hi there
Am confused. Am running Manila 2.5 and have recently installed an icon set for the Comm Manager. Previously when I went into the Comm Manager the 3G option (which is labeled 'Change to GSM',)was marked as OFF (this was how it was when I first used the phone and I have never had a need to change that). But since I installed the new icon set, strangely, when I now go into the Comm Manager I notice that the 3G option in showing as ON (Green) and I cannot turn it off. I tap the On/Off button but unlike the Wireless or Phone options nothing happens.
I do not believe that I need the 3G functionality to be on (as it was not showing as such until recently, and as far as I know I do not want to 'change to GSM') when I have the Data Connection on, and therefore I would like know how to switch the 3G off (incidentally I can switch the Data Connection on or off at will)?
Can anybody help/advise
Many thanks in advance.

What phone do you have and what ROM are you running? If I understand your question correctly you are asking about switching between 3G and EDGE (aka 2.5G) at will or on demand. If so you need to do a registry edit. Using your registry editor go to "HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting" and change value of "ShowUMTSBandPage" to 1. Do a soft reset and this should do the trick.
However my question to you is why would you want to do this? You do lose speed because EDGE is a slower connection. Not to mention you cannot do both data usage and phone calls simultaneously. Only in a few instances could I see this tweak being truly helpful (aka being in an area for extended time where 3G bandwidth is extremely weak and cuts in and out a lot). The one benefit would be possibly better battery life.
Hope this helps.

Hi aybarrap
Thanks for the reply.
Have reviewed the situation and conclude as per what you have said that the gains are outweighed by the losses...so I will stick with 3G.

3G eats alot of battery, GSM all the way if you never use HSDPA (WiFi + WEP cracker ftw).
Anyway it's: settings (in HTC slider) > wireless controls (comm manager basically) > press on phone > scroll down to the bottom and choose BAND > change to GSM/WCDMA (3G)
Glad I could help. Just keep in mind that if you are big on battery life this is definitely the tweak for you as mentioned by ArtieQ. I personally use this tweak because my workplace gets low 3G signal and I tend to drop calls if I don't apply this tweak. Not to mention the battery life is eaten super fast by all of the switching back and forth. I turn on EDGE only at work and back to 3G when I get off.
My ADSL connection can do 13Mb download & 1Mb upload, all computers achieve (also on wireless) this using either speedtest.bbmax.co.uk or speedtest.net. However my HD2 can only achieve 3.5-4Mb max using the same sites, upload is represented correctly. It seems to fly up very quickly then back down, for upload it takes a few seconds to check the speed for both sites. I used Opera 10 (Flash Lite 3).
Also on HSDPA it can only do ~0.5Mb but when tested in dongle it achieves ~2.5Mb, upload is represented correctly (1Mb) for both Vodafone and O2.
I've also tried the wireless N hack but this hasn't improved things.

There is no solution. HD2 performance on WI-FI are just bad. People don't care. The only justification they can give to this is "it's just a phone". Amen.

That sucks, my mates Omnia is also pretty bad on WiFi so I assume this is a WinMo problem?
Also I meant just O2 for 0.5/2.5 HSDPA thing, just checked Vodafone and got 3.5Mb / 1Mb.
Also doesn't the "it's just a phone" thing kinda wear off when you cross the £500 mark?

I don't know. Maybe it's WinMo but I don't have other Windows Phones to make comparisons.

I agree but these are the people that appear here when you criticize their toy.
Maybe enabling wifi-n will speed it up. I'd at least give that a try.
Also, I did a test, and I get exactly what I get on my laptop which is 5644kbps
I have been having issues with HSDPA on my HD2 for some time. I am with T-mobile UK... what I have found is that when I hard boot/reflash a new rom... HSDPA is full speed. However something triggers what I can only think is a GPRS only mode, at first I thought I had installed apps that affected networking but I don't believe that is the case now.
Yesterday for example I was in a shielded building and had no reception whatsoever... when I came out I could not connect to T-Mobile data so restarted my HD2 a few times then setup data again.... I am connected now but internet connectivity is really slow, I generally stream music but I can't do this and I may as well forget about YouTube.
I have spoken to T-Mobile about this in the past and they said there are no restrictions on my account. I also know (havng proved it before) that by going through the hassle of a hard reset/new rom flash HSDPA with work again.
I wonder if this is IP related but I am not sure how to check the configuration on Winmo. I also am unsure how/where to do a speedtest (Speedtest.net needs an updated version of flash).
Managed to get it sorted out.... sent the Tmobile settings from the Tmobile website to my phone. Then in my ROM (OMEGA) there is a enable 3G mode.... This seems a bit flaky to be honest... Anyway I selected the new Tmobile internet settings option in Connections, then flicked the 3G setting in connection manager on and off a few times...
In the status bar, rather than "G" and a small "G" with reception meter both show as "H" (this will differ to the rom you have probably).... main thing is streaming is back again

I've generally found 3G to be faster than WiFi and even the ping in some situations on WM phones.
my phone also gets around 2 to 3Mbps on the speed test with the wifi.. 700 or so with hspda and 500 or so with 3g.
isnt this the max rate of the memory card? perhaps the phone itself is slowing down the results?

3G speed depends heavily on the mast tech level and how many people are using it.
I am kinda having some crazy stuff going on. First does anyone have a good website to check download speeds? I am using I.dslr.net/tinyspeedtest.HTML.
I pick the 3G test I get about 300-600 Kbps for a download speed. The crazy thing is if I turn on my wifi, but DO NOT CONNECT to a network I get 1600-1800 Kbps. I have tested and retested many times no matter what if I have the wifi turned on I always get a faster speed. I know I am not connected to a network because A. When I do connect to my home wireless I get about 4000 Kbps. B. I have tested this when there are no networks around.
I guess cool if I am really getting those speeds which it looks like I am because even the latency probes are fast, my concern is having the wifi on all the time will eat up my battery even more.
So I would like some feed back on what others are using to do speed tests and also does this happen to anyone else?
I am on joshes fast and stable rom.

Ok... So can I change those settings so I can get that speed without the wifi on?
Thanks
I use www.speakeasy.net/speedtest for that...it only works in IE (not opera, haven't tested it in skyfire), but does a great job.
I personally dont know how, i cam across a post saying how to, ill look it up. Recently ive been busy running android on the hd2
