This phone has a lot of good annd great things, but im sure everyone is aware of what they are. This post only covers the BAD points and bugs which i noticed since i recieved this phone less than 12 hours ago.
1) Unlike the other versions, it does not have a Designed for Windows Mobile logo on the rectangular area just below the camera lens. It makes the rectagular area look a bit odd....
2) I thought i could leave the device on the desk, in "laptop" mode, and talk over speakerphone. However the person on the other side couldnt hear me at all unless i hold the pda really close to me. Im not sure if this is because i switched ACG on.
3) When coming out of standby, or flipping open the screen from "closed" mode, it can sometimes take up to 4 seconds for the screen to fully draw. First 2 seconds you get a white screen, next 2-3 seconds the items draw on.\
4)Battery lock switch is a bit flimsy....
5) it is much certainly slower than wm 2k3se devices, but not unbearably so. I have not installed any third party apps as yet, to avoid problems.
6) sound quality is good, but because they dint include a software DSP or equaliser, its not reaching its full potential.
7)Its a reall pain in the @ss that they did not put at least two buttons on the screen area. This makes using it in tablet mode irritating. it would have made it soooooo much better to use if they had 2 of those buttons to correspond to the soft keys.
8) the ergonomics of it are not great. for example the end and call buttons on the hinge are on the lower part of the hinge, and not in a convienient place to push when calling
9)No sign of USB host capibility. For such a laptop like device, its kinda sucky not to be able to connect mice, full keyboard, or other things vis usb. bluetooth peripherals are a bit pricey..
thats all i've noticed thusfar. I really hope a new rom revision is released soon
edit
10) it seems to have fairly worse reception than my c500, i've tried both 2g ad 3g sims and got the same conclusion...
It should have a logo?
My MDA Pro does?
yep...no logo there...
the prototypes and some versions have a colour logo, much like the "designed for windows" stickers on laptops, as far as i knw the mda pro and the o2 exec have logos (not colour though)
wonder why the orange version dosent.....
Hi,
i recently bought a second hand mda vario (wizard i think) and have found several problems id like to solve:
1/.The 'Pictures and Videos' option, when selected, simply brings up a grid of 9 grey squaresd and then crashes rather than loading thumbs of my picctures, the only way to view images is to use file manager and open each seperatly which is a hassle and has no previews.
2/. The wifi has poor range and also i cannto seem to disable the GPRS so that IE uses Wifi rather than trying to connect to GPRS, is this possible?
3/. The bottom of the case (when the direfctional pad is at the bottom, under your thumbs) is loose and has some give, (ie u can push it and feel it move a little) this is not directly damaging but is annoying as you can feel it when using the buttons
4/.The stylus is loose (but ive just noticed a thread about using Bluetack to fix this)
THanks for any help,
Kind Regards and its great to see such an active forum for my new gadget!
Hello ,
"colossusuk" has upgraded Wiki's problems page.
Please , if you read this topic , let us to be informed of all yuor tests with Tytn that is in your hands !
In particular :
1. Screen alignment issue
2. Wi-fi range : poor , not more that 8-10 meters from router
3. Keyboard sticking keys issue
4. Device "hot" during charghe or when using Wi-fi ?
5. Tytn's Case : is still with damned magnets ?
6. Freeze problems
7. Tytn is in your hands since ?
8. Battery has got a metal plate on the bottom ?
THANKSSSS.
I'm so popular!
Just kidding, anyway.
Right down to business, Ive only had the 635 since Tuesday, so here are my findings thus far:
1. Screen alignment has been fine, no problems on MY device yet. I carnt say for all of them, but my unit has had NO issues with the screen alignment.
2. Wifi range appears slightly less then my previous 632 model, but sliding the notch to the left so its in the middle solved this. (under power mode tab/wireless lan/settings menu)
3. Keyboard is 100% fine, infact I think its slightly better then the 632's keyboard. No sticking keys at all and there is a satisfying 'click' when you press down on the keys to type.
4. I carnt say I've noticed the device getting hot while charging, but I have noticed it gets warm with the WLAN turned on. Probably more power being drawn from the battery and also the WLAN chip being turned on that makes the device warm when being used?
5. Havent tested this yet. I'm still using the case that came with my 632 and havent noticed the screen changing when taking it out from the case - and I always put the phone in the case when on the move.
{EDIT: I can get the screen to change from landscape/portrait when holding the supplied case under the Vario II when the phone is half open}
6. Freeze problems? As in WM5 just freezes when using it ? nope not at all unless I load an app on it which causes it to crash.
7. Its been in my hands since this Tuesday the 19th.
8. The battery does NOT have any metal plates at the bottom nor anywhere else on it. The battery is white on the front and back with small bits of black plastic on the edges, with the white covering.
I have to say that the battery in this unit compared to the 632 model (at least to me) lasts alot longer - say 2 days longer or so with normal use. Its 1350mAh's btw.
Hope the above helps !!!
Thanks for your "mini review" !
If you have free time to spend here...please let us to be upgraded with your tests or impressions...or bugs (hoping for you to not find them).
Ah , what can you say about the stylus ? When you insert or remove it , have you find something different from your previous Tytn ? Many users had reported issues with stylus retention mechanism...Hoping Htc will modify it , one day.
Thanks for now...Enjoy your Tytn.
Hello from down-under ,
I've come to put forward a problem myself and a few others are having over at the Mtekk forums. I currently just purchased an I-Mate JasJam on Telstras' new NextG network and have been using it for about a week and a half. As this fantastic piece of equipment is a little on the expensive side, I wanted to make sure it was kept safe all the time, so I began to use (no matter how silly it made me look ) the I-Mate supplied Pouch, little did I know it did more damage then not using it...
After investigating over the last few days, It was concluded that the magnetic found in the supplied Pouch had some diverse effect on the switching on Landscape to Portrait mode when removing the JasJam from the Pouch to answer/make a call, play a game or send a text message; often resulting in a 'bugged' or 'glitched' screen, stuck between either Landscape or Portrait etc (I fixed by removing the JasJam and sliding out the Keyboard and back in).
After I few days I thought that this couldn't be right for a brand new machine and took my problem to the Internet in which I found others with the same problem. Since then I have stopped using the supplied Pouch and am now looking at purchasing the Krussel Orbit Pouch as a magnetic-less replacement (any users with one, I'd love your feedback). I am making this thread to see if any users of the XDA-Developers board have faced this issue and ask one further question:
1. Since I stopped using the Pouch I can only find one annoying trait left, whenever I switch the Screen back on from 'Standby' mode I seem to receive a small 'glitch' in the Today Screen if the device has been locked, if the device has been left unlocked the Screen can be switched on/off with no issue - does anyone else have this problem, I'm concerned that the magnetic pouch has caused some internal damage...
Thanks,
Elite_Gamer04
Hi, there is a bit more about this problem in the accessories thread, I noticed the magnet causing issues and wondered about internal damage as you did, even possibly causing the align issues, but a few people reported back they had been using the case from day 1 and while it affected the landscape/portrait, they had no align issues or any other problems, so I don't suspect that there is any internal damage occurring..I do wonder about your screen glitch but without actually seein it..I haven't a clue, also do you have a lot of today plugins?..could possibly be one of them is buggy..I'm not sure, but the case does certainly suck, I was immediately concerned with the magnet strength, off topic..but on my device if my thumb is a bit damp or any metal touches the aluminum bezel around the ear piece of the phone..the screen will flicker.
Thanks for your reply Chaotic, My device is in the same state as when it come out of the box, so this isn't a 3rd party issue. I have tried removing/adding the default Today Screen icons to see if it makes an issue to the 'glitching' of my screen when it on/off and it makes no difference, only thing I can see that makes it not happen *sometimes* is when the device is not locked.
Well thats one user without my issue, hoping someone will report it, or I'm going to get a replacement.
*If your testing to see if you have the same issue as me, simply hold your device in your hand (try both with it Locked and Unlocked) and push the top right-hand side button which should switch your screen off, press it again for it to come on. If you see a sort of 'glitch' of white on your Today Screen and then it fixes itself (I'm talkin 1-2 seconds) you have the same as me.*
Hi chaps,
I've used the magnetic pouch from day one with my UK T-Mobile Vario II and am still yet to see the landscape/portrait switching issue when removing the Vario II to answer a call.
I had a theory about this, and it's probably going to get shot down in flames for it's obviousness, but I'll mention it anyway... Could the problem be down to the machine being powered down (manually or automatically) while in Landscape mode... then when switching on automatically when a phone call is received, the phone tries to switch back to portrait mode but gets stuck?
I have road tested this theory on my own Vario II and have not seen the problem at all, but my ROM may handle things differently to yours? Apologies again if this suggestion is obvious.

I assume you are referring to the lock/unlock option found on the Today screen? I also see a short white screen delay when using this Today screen option.
I also see an even longer delay when using the password/pin lock option. Probably something to do with the locking program checking to see if the preset time delay for locking and requesting the password/pin has passed.
Disabling both options makes starting up a lot faster, although you may of course need these options enabled. I'm sure it's something that will be resolved by the manufacturer in time.
elite_gamer04, I hadn't ever used the lock on my device, so I enabled it just to test, and there wasn't any differences, I also wasn't sure of what the actual glitch was, but since you mentioned it I did some further investigating, I do notice a white screen when coming back from standby, but it lasts no longer than half a second..definitely not 2 seconds.
g00nerz, its all good, all info around here is appreciated, but there is definitely an issue with the case magnet, I don't have a single landscape/portrait issue unless I put it in the bundle case..I use a modded aluminum case at the moment..but if I switch back it happens, I'm pretty sure the words "bundle case" are in the title of the post with others with this issue if you want to check it out.
I have read where some people were discussing that they thought some had different screens..that could be why you haven't had this issue or maybe it is ROM related, but from what I understand its been a variety of brands with this issue...now that I think about it..I wonder if all the brands bundle cases are the same?
I think its Mike(I hope I got that right) that has tore one of these apart..few posts about it with pics on the forum he might know, but anyhow I wonder if theres actually a hardware switch that triggers the switch from portrait/landscape when the slide out kb is opened, and the magnet is affecting that..could also be it was revised on some models.
I'm just speculating/guessin on what might be causing it, I really haven't any solid info other than some people definitely have an issue with the case, including me.
I also see a short white screen delay when using this Today screen option

I <3 you hehe. Thank god its not just me . Yes I was referring to the 'Device Lock' and 'Device Unlock' function on the Today Screen. When it is Unlocked and I switch on/off the screen I see no 'lag' or 'white glitch' but with it on I see a small 1-2 sec lag. Anyways as you have confirmed it also I don't have to worry about returning mine and will get on with my new Krussel case I'm about to order.
Thanks
P.S If others are having this issue, or know of how to fix, don't hesitate to post.
Please consider that the use of wifi may drasticely slow down the device's power up. I do use the default case with the strong magnet, and when I power up my device with the wifi enabled it takes a while until he completely awake; the wifi plus the switch landscape => portrait (thanks HTC case) slow it down.
I am also experiencing the "auto answer" issue; from time to time when I put my device off its case it answer to the incoming phone call, but till now I was not sure that the case could be involved; are you sure about this? I tried to give some testing but I was not able to reproduce it; it only happen when it is not expected to happen

Hi elite_gamer04, As you had rightly mentioned this is really a fantastic device and no doubt about it.....like you I had the same problem when I bought it around 2 months back.
I was breaking my head as to why its happening, it looked for me as if the device hangs on and off...but did not notice keenly the instances when it happened as removing it out of the pouch was too normal a thing that did not hint me that it has something to do with the issue...But I was totally broken and disturbed and decided somehow I am going to get a replacement. I took it to the service centre and the guy there (very smart) as soon as I mentioned about the problem ( I went there thinking that it has something to do with the sliding mechanism) responded spontaneously taking the pouch opened the flap and took the magnet side over the screen and showed it to me....wow yes...its the pouch which was the culprit as we noticed the screen going crazy....Anyway I was relaxed but from that instance I kept aside the pouch that came with the pack and I am currently using a different one from the stores. Till now I have noticed no glitches and am happy I own a real amazing fast device.
About the other glitch you mentioned when the phone is locked yes I tried and it is there even for me but I dont think its a major issue for you to replace the device as its something to do with the screen refresh rate and memory which am sure would be fixed by new ROM upgrades in the days to come...but relax rest assured you own a fantastic device.
All the best
Thanks for posting this about the screen - I thought I was going nuts. I bought a replacement pouch that has a belt loop - so slightly more secure than the clip. But when i started using it - it always switches to landscape mode.
I'll have to find one without a magnet i guess!
Hey all,
I've read these forums, and am 90% sure I have a defective Hermes. However, I'm unsure, as these forum posts were just text, and therefore can't really accurately describe the problems being seen. So, I made a YouTube video showing a couple of my issues, especially the screen fading to white. Like I say, I'd just like confirmation, and I'd like this post and video to serve as a help to others who are wondering if they have the same problem. You know what they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words .
Here are more details of my problems, in no particular order:
o The buttons reset after a quick power off and on (not a reset).
o The screen fade problem resets itself after a quick power off and on (not a reset).
o The screen calibration issue (not shown in video) seems to last a little longer sometimes. The issue is that calibration gets a little off. It seems to be by 10-20 pixels, but I can't repeat this as readily as the screen fade.
o This has happened with and without a memory card inserted.
o I've tried two different batteries, with the same results.
o I've tried three different firmwares (original, WM5 update, WM6 Black 2.0).
o The battery quick powerdown issue has only happened to me once (battery drains 10% every minute).
Here's the link to the video. It's only 84 seconds, so take a peek!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQWqTkoMX_4
Let me (and others) know your thoughts. It'd be appreciated.
PS... about the screen calibration...
FYI, I know about the screen calibration issues some have had wth the Hermes. However, I don't think this is that problem, since I never, ever have to recalibrate my phone. It always corrects itself eventually.

This has been documented HEAVILY in the wiki and the forums so I wont answer that.
The rest seems VERY weird indeed especially the screen going white?!?!
Is it still in warranty because I would so send it to be repaired.
Not seen anything like that on any forum. Are you keeping it somewhere hot or near an e.m. field just before use?
What additional apps have you installed? Do these problems still occur with an "empty" phone (i.e. right after a hard reset before installing third party apps)? If so then that should rule out software and firmware (ROM).
Fade to white issue: hardware problem IMO
Buttons stop working issue: looks like software IMO

I agree, the screen going white is similar to when I had my O2 XDA EXEC (HTC Universal) in which whenever I moved the lcd into the mini laptop mode the screen would fade to pure white. When I sent it into PPC Tech they notified me saying in which the lcd cable was damaged itself. Im not sure if thats the case with you necesarily, since it seems the screen goes back to normal after powering the device to standby and back.
The keys are most likely software/rom issues. Perhaps maybe you should reflash to a recent rom and see what happens. Although if that doesnt work I suggest you send in for replacement or warranty. I neeever in the 6 months I had my phone did I ever have problems like the one you've listed.
::EDIT::
I just realized I saw that you tried multiple roms, if thats the case I realllly believe you have a defective phone. It does happen that one in a hundred tend to go bad..
Had similar occurance when mine had gotten damp.
fading screen and hardware buttons
Hi,
I've reported some time ago these issues, they started with LVSW Edition (2007-03-20) and after that Pro - BLACK 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and still with 3.01.
I don't think is hardware related. i happens in random way. No specific apps or time or connection.
I've had similar issues with the buttons not working on my 8525. It seems to have to do with changing in and out of landscape mode. For example, I'll always have problems if I reset the phone and leave it in landscape mode and I always have to push the keyboard in and pull it back out to get everything working right.
If the buttons DO work, they are usually wrong, like up and down will instead move left to right. Again, pushing in and pulling out the keyboard fixes it for me. I recently upgraded to a new ROM and couldn't say if the problem persists or not.
As for the white screen issue - I'd say it's FUBAR'd.
