Alright... I need a good (great?) task manager.
I have used SPB and Magic Button. I like SPB but it is too difficult to hold in the corner of the screen on my Wizard (8125) and I dont want to install ALL of it just for that (I use resco explorer and I like it better then SPB's addins to the default file explorer.)
Magic button was the next logical choice because it puts the icon in the middle of the screen and that's what I use now, but I'm not crazy about it. Anyone have any other suggestion? I am looking for something that is one hand friendly and lite weight and fast (of course, I want it ALL! lol)
Thanx in advance; Lew
Hi Lew...
You might want to try this http://www.insoftwarehouse.com/desktop/products/inclose/index.php?l=en
or you could try Wisbar Lite at http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/products.php?prod=WisBar+Lite
there seems to be some kind of conflict with every single task manager I've used so far:
InClose Mobile: freezes my Pictures & Videos app
Wisbar: doesn't close correctly on many windows such as Resco explorer options, and wallpaper changing. It simply ends the window thus discarding any changes you make.
Magic button: Made some of my status icons on the top bar disappear
still looking for the perfect app...

You know it has two display modes, right? If you tap-and-hold the OK/close button, it will switch between showing the Magic Button icon + running programs icons, and just showing your regular bar. I have it set up to just take up the whole task bar space, and usually show my regular bar. If I need to switch apps, I can just tap and hold and tap the icon of the app I want active.
I have tryed those 2 now and I am back to Magic Button. The MAIN reason... It is too hard to HOLD the corner of the screen with my thumb on the 8125, I guess because the border of the screen is raised so much. Ah well back to what works I guess.
Thanx guys; Lew
Hi,
You can also try Xbar. You can find it with Google. It is not freeware but very cheap. It is a completely different idea from a taskmanager. You use the Actionbutton to call on the Xbar and then you can switch or close tasks or open programs without using the stylus.
I've been using it for a couple of months now after using every taskbar on the market for the last 4 years...

If you want a proper task manager, this is pretty much definitive:
http://buzzdev.net/component/option,com_simpleboard/Itemid,59/func,view/catid,27/id,15472/#15472
By one of Buzz's boys, DotFred. It's superb.
But that's really for tech heads. If you just want to close apps, use SMclose or similar.
If you really just want one handed task closing, check out VJOkButt on the board (not my website, versions on here are newer). It has various options but is very simplistic, but does close apps one thumbed.
V
I bought xbar3, its a great very straightforward piece of software.
You can find information on it here
I've previously used handyswitcher which i didn't enjoy, because it listed 'phone' as a running application and tried to close it.
best app closer/task manager hands down:
PocketNav 2.74 http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff/pocketnav.zip
Free and just a simple .exe to throw in your startup. If you don't like it, just delete it. I've been using it for several years now and have tried others. I always come back quickly...

I like SmallMenu Plus, a launcher/manger, highly configurable, can replace STart menu. There is a free version, but for a couple $$ you get a lot more functionality. It's the first program I install.

Guys… what am I missing here? I’m managing tasks via tray launch and have no complaints but then I’m a noob and don’t know any better. Please let me know if this is dumb. TIA
I have my first two tray launch links set to “AltTab” and “Running Programs”. From Today, I navigate down w/dpad and have task switcher tool there. Move one right and I can kill apps via OEM system tool.
Picture 1 shows tray icons. First (far left) is AltTab and second is Running Programs (created under ZeBoxx’s tutelage).

Just a convenience thing E.g. like a on a desktop, you could run Task Manager, click the task you want, and then choose Activate or End Task. But you could also alt-tab to go to the application you want active, and you can click the buttons on your taskbar to switch to them directly, or close them from there.
Personally I still like MagicButton best, but there's a ton of these types of apps out there, all with different styles and functionalities. I'd say just try some of them - if you don't like it, just uninstall

Thanks for that tip I like small programs and it works well with smclose. I found magic button a bit glitchy and hid icons on the nav bar so I could not see missed calls etc.
Another small app to my collection
If you have not tried smclose it is attached and just put in startup folder as well and it will close rather than minimize apps.
I ask myself then do I need a task manager with all apps closed lol

Hello Ipasq, i'm using PHM Tray Launch, could u please inform me how i can put the "AltTab"?
TIA
I've been playing around with SKMenu and it seems to work really well on my 8125. It is a bit to get configured but once you scan through the options is it pretty simple. The custom menu editor with the preview is very very nice when creating custom menus.
Overall its not bad for $8. If it continues to play nice with all the other junk on my PPC I am sold.

Has anyone figured out how to hide or exclude certain applications from the close processes list (ie. Activesync, Phone, etc)? There is a settings button in the general tab of the smenu settings but it is disabled. Anyone figure this one out?
TIA!

i put AltTab.exe in \windows and placed shortcut in \windows\start menu\programs too. then used the following command line in PHM Traylnch: \windows\alttab.exe (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=42913&highlight=)
the AltTab in the tray along with water's sweet "smartskey" work fine for me and seem to give me the task management control i need. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=41060&highlight=)

Can't do it. The one that can, which is very similar to SmallMenuPlus (but free) is GSPocketMagic.

Thanks for the file. You know, pocketnav closes apps as well. It puts an X on the screen so you can close the app and if you click on the lightening bolt, you can see a list of everything that's running and close them one at a time, all but active, or all.
Play around with the settings, it's pretty powerful!

Thanks for the info
First Glance
At first glance it looks amazing!!! I might get flamed for that but it is my opinion.
Currently,
-Sliding is smooth.
-It has a contacts application! Would like to see an option for Favorite Contacts.
-Calendar rework on the ribbon is great. Shows numerous days appointments.
-Dpad controls are present.
-Really intuative.
-Customization of animation is available under Customize Home. It can flip like the cube but in all directions.
-Battery drain is better but still a little more than my liking. This is probably device specific.
-Resource usage is down on my Wizard from before but still higher than most small programs
This is probably because things that PointUI controls in their interface like Weather, Contacts, CommManager
etc are always available immediately, no delay. It takes resources to do that. But I have to say overall 2 of
2 of the most recent cubes I have tried and 1 of the iphone knock offs I have tried have both been Ram hogs
with half the immediate access or smoothness this program gives.
-Messaging and calendar seem to be customizable to a degree still using a reg editor. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355961
-They have their own keyboard going on. Try to edit a contact and see what I mean. It would be nice to see it
skinnable because the color of it is so dark.
-Scrolling is still opposite. Both on press and direct, and flick to scroll but I like it.
------
Things I'd Like to see--These may actually come, see my notes below
-More options on weather. I like HTC Weather plugin much better. It would be nice to see more forcasts then
today and tomorrow. I really think a Hybrid of HTC Today Weather and Weather Watcher would be the best
but they may have an issue covering all of the countries.
-PointUI Calendar-Bet its coming
-PointUI SMS-Bet its coming
-PointUI VOIP
-PointUI Dialpad
-PointUI Media Hub & Player. Bet something like it is coming but man wouldn't it be great if they would team up with
A_C to make a killer integrated app!!!!!
-Rework the lock screen. Again they should talk to A_C here.
-Would like to see a Charging indicator on the home page battery icon. It does show however when pressed.
-Would like to see a Sync icon appear when connected to the PC
I haven't spent much more than 10 minutes with it. I don't know how customizable it is as of yet. It looks like on their site they are developing more programs and customizations to go with it. I also notice that at the top of the download section there was an emphasis on this Home being "Free". That along with the green check marks for some things and red x's for others makes me think that adds or improvements may cost money going forward.
Thats ok. Good programs do cost money and should be paid for.
I will add more as I test further.

Completely approve with you
I know it's a little early but to make this program "perfect" :
- an integrated SMS manager, like they did for Contacts
- surely theme customisation
- a shortcut manager for programs on the HOME screen (eg change the outlook calendar to ThumbCal or the Messaging to a program other than Outlook messaging)
Though, this program is still GREAT, and this update brings decents modifications and fixes

I believe the integrated SMS is coming. Just from looking at their website it will be there but they will probably charge for it and good for them.
Theme customization same thing
The shortcut manager is there in a way. Just press the "Star" Icon. I actually think it helps keep the screen clean of clutter. For you other 2 requests, ThumbCal and Messaging. You can change these using a reg editor. Not as simple as a ui but it can be done. Let me know if you need help with it.

new version looks promising..waiting for Wm2003 Edition
The new version is incredible!!!
a quick question
I am using version 1.02b, is it better to uninstall this version and start fresh? or should I use the update manager instead?
I really liked PointUI when it first came out, but realized pretty soon that I couldn't use it because of the way it lists the tasks. I was really hoping they had fixed that in this version, but see that it still lists tasks alpabetically instead of by due date.
Looks great, and the "Pick a version" screen definately implies "another (non free) version is coming soon"
Aaaa VGA version still have to wait

I would recommend you completely unintall the previous version. By that I mean go through their unistall method and soft reset. Then file explore and delete all info out of \Program Files. Then reg edit and delete all info in \HKCU and \HKLM. Soft reset and then use this one.
Cheers

hi
when i want to send an sms in WM6.1 i have two touch buttons in the lower part of the screen: they are "delete" (on left) and "menu" (on right).
I never delete my sms, so "delete" button is unuseful for me. Do you know if i can change it with "new sms" button ?
is quite boring to tap "menu" then "new sms" everytime i want to send a message !
Yeah dude, ur right... I think the same as u! In WM2003, the left soft-button was "new"
But u cen install WM 6.1 from PDAViet 5.2.19400, which works fine, it's stable and fast & on the main screen it has the "new sms" soft-button.....take a look:
Hope this hepls u...
yes this is what i want man !
but i have to format my pda i cannot do this right now.
someone else knows an easir/faster way ?

CURRENT VERSION A4 (Updated 01/08/08)
Alright, so after some tweaking, I decided to release my Devonshire WAD2 QVGA theme
IMPORTANT: Make sure you have Calibri font installed on your Pocket PC! If you do not have it, follow the instructions found here: http://labnol.blogspot.com/2007/03/download-windows-vista-fonts-legally.html

}
The tabs are HOME, WEATHER, AGENDA, APPS & SETTINGS, and CONTACTS
History
A4: Fixed the change page gestures and refined the apps & settings page and the contacts page
A3: Home tab tweaked to add on the most used apps popup menu these items: bluetooth status, volume status & pending notifications. Apps & Settings tab completed: Now has 3 pages for apps, 2 pages for settings. Contacts tab completed: Now has 3 pages for contacts.
A2: Minor tweaks, plus better layout for weather
HOME
Pressing on the Home tab at the very bottom opens up WM5NewMenu, which is similar to the left softkey but customizable. I highly suggest you look for it and install it. Otherwise, just link it back to the left softkey.
The four main buttons above it are the Menu Button, Phone Button, AltTab Button, and S2U2 Button
If you need AltTab, it can be found in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3137583&postcount=10
Pressing on the left button (Menu) opens up the menu with your most-used apps. In version A3, I also added notifications for bluetooth, sound, and pending notifications. In the zip file, I also left the graphics for wifi, if you decide to switch any of them.
Pressing the analog clock opens up the indicators strip:
I also added a popup calendar which comes up when you press on the date at the top.
WEATHER
This tab uses WAD2's internal weather program. You can always change it to Weatherpanel, of course.
I changed the layout and the arrow to make it look nicer and provide more information.
I use the Yahoo weather icons from PhatPhinger for my layout, since not all of the Weatherpanel Diamond icons work properly. I attached the zip of the two set of icons for it.
AGENDA
For the sake of compatibility, this also uses WAD2's internal agenda. The links for tasks and appointments go to Agenda One, however. You can change those easily.
APPS & SETTINGS
The apps & settings tab has 3 pages for apps and 2 pages for settings, with 11 slots in each page. The arrows changes the pages.
Pressing on "Apps" will change it to "Settings", and vice versa.
The "App" tab on the very bottom opens up Resco file explorer,
CONTACTS
The contacts tab has 3 pages for contacts similar to the apps and settings tab. The "missed calls" text will also open the missed calls screen.
The "Person" tab on the very botom opens up VITO FunContact, but you can change it to any contact apps that you use.
Any feedbacks?
Hi! great work!
In my opinion only the weathertab is not really fitting to your desing of the other pages... it's a little bit too Manila like...but well, it's only me!
Thx for sharing!
ruebyi
Looks great ! Good job !
A couple notes:
1. For some reason, the ditigal time on my Home Tab was messed up. It showed the time as 4:30 A and then underneath it AM. I fixed it, but don't know if it was a bug or just my phone.
2. In Calendar Tab, the lines 0 Tasks Due Today and 0 Tasks Overdue where spilling over on to the calendar.
3. For some reason, the controls are inverted (i.e. if I am at the Home Tab and press left, instead of going to Contacts Tab, it goes to Weather Tab. Any way to fix this?
4. The Contacts Tab only has one page currently. Update?
Other than that, I love the theme. Possibility of landscape being added?

Okay, cool. I will re-install that tomorrow.
I have a suggestion/request if possible:
Is there any way to change the 3rd (AltTab) and 4th (S2u2) pictures into BlueTooth and WiFi.
Those are a bit more practical, especially since I don't know what AltTab does and don't use s2u2.
Also, I know landscape might be hard/time consuming, so is there a way to get simple landscape (e.g. maybe just a Home Tab w/ texts, e-mails, calls and time listed or something?
I use landscape a lot w/ my Tilt since I use it for texting.

Well, it's actually pretty easy for you to customize it and change the function under Author Mode for those two buttons. AltTab is a great little software that allow you to change programs, just like hitting Alt+Tab on your computer keyboard.
S2U2 is one of the most popular screen lock around and it started here on Xda-Developer. Do a search on it =D
I uploaded the AltTab program. Just copy the folder into your Program Files folder in your phone.

This can run on WM5, WM6, and WM6.1.
All you need is the Wisbar Advance Desktop software, which can be purchased here: http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/products/pocketpc/WisBarAdvanceDesktop/
Ok I have wisebar desktop.exe which adds this to my Fuze. But I am a little confused by instructions (yeah thick headed I know) I have added theme to my Themes folder under "\Program Files\Lakeridge\WisBar Advance Desktop\Themes" this is on device mem. Do I also then copy this to storage card, or just move the WisBar Advance Desktop\Themes portion of the foler to card?? kind of lost
edit: this is 2.1b version.

1. Copy the folder "Devonshire" into "\Program Files\Lakeridge\WisBar Advance Desktop\Themes"
2. On your storage card's root folder, copy the folder "Wisbar Advance Desktop." This is where the graphics are and the link has to be the same, or else you'd have to manually redefine each gfx file.
