After the duplicates in notifications another old school bug came to me.
My Wizard did not wake up this morning and it is the second time it happens.
when I turned it on the alarm started to go off.
Definitely they built WM5 on a crappy unpatched version of WM2003.
Did it happened to somebody else?
If it is only me I'll try to remove some softwares that could incriminated.
On the other case did you find workarounds.
That's pretty tough if you can not rely on your alarm clock...
this has happened to me recently.
someone suggested a setting under tools, advanced in pocket plus if you have that installed.
waiting to see if that fixes the issue for me ...
Well this has happened to me. I've had my 02 mini for 1 day and on the whole I'm pleased but this AM the alarm did not go off which is a real problem for me. Luckily I had my trusty old xda2s which woke me up. I switched the mini on and the alarm sounded.
No software installed, in fact I skip all the o2 install and just have default windows 5.0. Maybe this is the problem !
This is similar to a problem I used to get on my xda1 when the alarm would not go off ( infact the whole phone locked up and I needed to soft reset in the AM )
Any ideas ?
jeff
I had the same problem on Wednesday morning - I set an alarm on Tuesday night, and it didn't wake me up!
I then tried to set an alarm for 15 minutes later than the current time and that work.
i did originally set the alarm to repeat, no light, no vibration and didn't bother making that change for the one that worked. I'll have a play to see if there's any common "feature" of alarms that don't ring.
And yes, I did check that the alarm was enabled , and enabled for the right day!
I'm no further with this - anyone else observed weird behaviour?
Same for me, the alarm goes off when I turn my Qtek 9100 on...
Same thing with my 9100, russian localized. Was late at the office today thanks to this "assistant"!
Hm... My russian localized 9100 works fine.
Message and Alarm issues
Hi all,
As I have found these problem very annoying, I decided to mail dopod, and this is what they said (and some more):
Dear Sir:
The mobile 5.0 system use new operation behavior for ROM control. It will save the changes for setting, file when power off (stand by). So if you soft reset it before power off (stand by), it will cause some data changes lost. Please power off (stand by) first, then reset. It should keep the data changed well.
And the download agent is use for download file in internet explore. It will download the file automatically you select a file it support in internet explore.
Thanks for using Dopod products.

Hi, I recently purchased dopod 838 in thailand. overall I am pleased with its feature and capabilities. But I encountered several problems: soft-reset issues, each time I soft-reset the phone, the alarm which I dismissed couples of hour before rang again! also some of my messages are deleted (sms and e-mail); alarm itself has issues, sometimes it won't ring. btw, what does download agent do? I have visited your website several times now and I haven't seen any improvements ever sice. application section only provide manual and still no games. I would hope to see some application which might help me with my problems, also it would be convenient if you can make it mobile-friendly. thank you for your kind attention, I would appreciate it if I can hear from you soon. Regards, Aditya Pamungkas
Can anyone confirm and comment this? as I have found no problem ever since. thanks
::adit
hmm, that doesn't explain why mine didn't set the alarm... I didn't soft reset it.
However, it could explain the root cause: alarms are being set, then the device is turned off before the RAM has a chance to update the registry/flash/whatever...
A bit of debugging should prove/disprove this. I'll have another play
More playing... This seems to be something to do with turning off before the ram state gets a chance to update the flash, and set the appropriate flags, etc.
I wish that microsoft had a trouble ticketing mechanism!
booooo
I'm a long time lurker but cannot withhold myself from posting after reading this
This happened to me also a cple of times.
Alarm (the one in te clock settings) and notifications from the calender both failed on me 1 or 2 times allready. It's un-F*&^**-ing believable :x
A $700 PDA cannot do what a $1 dollar wristwatch does flawlessly.
And this has been an issue since WM2002 as i can remember, thats the saddest part.....
It's one of the most important functions of my pda!!
If I had an (real life) assistant i'd sure fire him if he made me miss my appointments.
any updates on this ?
a pda that does not have a reliable alarm is pretty much useless. :-(

Strange. I have same device and same bug.
Alarm not going off
Same happens with the HTC Universal (JJ).
Must definitely be a WM5 problem
Cheers

1st: I could not stop an alarm and had to make a hard reset, from that time I do not use the repeat functionality.
2nd: My morning alarm was "lost in space", from that time I check the notifications, and clear duplicates.
3rd: I had set the alarm from Mon to Fri, and on Thu the alarm was lost, it disappeared from the notif queue.
WM5 is unable to give a reliable alarm? It works for a time and suddenly gone?
What app would fix it?
Well, i did the hard reset and flashed to the lates k-jam rom.
I also did not install SPB pocket plus (one of my favourite apps )
Because i was suspecting it was slowing my system down.
And voila! untill today, my pda did not miss 1 alarm.
So i'm thinking spb pocketplus might be the culprit.
Can you guys confirm that you all have spb pocketplus installed when running into this bug?
No problem on my Qtek 9100.
But I use a french software named Pocket WakeUp 1.1
See : http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1299
For those who don't speak french I can translate the commands in english if you want...
there is also another freeware application made for this bug: search for WakeUp Tweak on http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/
But I'm not sure yet if it works completely well on WM2005
sometimes it does, sometimes i think it doesn't...
Wakeup Tweak is only for WM2003 first Edition.
I don't think it will work for the actual issue on WM 5.0
I now have the push email up and running but I can't seem to get my device to wakeup when I have new mail. I have to keep turning it on to see if I got new mail or not. This can be very annoying. Is there any way around this?
I have looked in notifications and under "new email message" I have it selected to display on screen and vibrate. What else do I need to change?
Hi DanITman,
I've got the same problem here.
With my HP6340 this works perfectly so when I bought the wizard I expected the same, but not.
Seems to me that active sync can’t wake up the wizard even if you change the registry to wake up WLAN after standby.
So if there is someone else who could help as that would be much appreciated.

I have no problem getting mail while in sleep mode. I just want it to notify me when I do receive mail by waking up and vibrating. Or stay in sleep mode and just vibrate. I would be happy with that. I just think that the push email is useless unless I get notified when an email comes in so I can respond promtly. I'm glad to see others are having the same problem and hopefully a fix will come out soon.
So if I understand you correctly your device can receive e-mail when it's in standby?
Do you use GPRS or WLAN for push e-mail?
I think you might have checked notification under sounds in the settings screen?

I use GPRS/EDGE for all of my email. ActiveSync works fine in sleep mode. However, when mail does arrive I don't know it until I turn my device back on manually, making the whole push email thing useless because i still have to check to see if I have received new mail or not. Under notifications I have it set to vibrate and show on screen when new email arrives (which it does) but only if its not in sleep mode or once I turn the device on manually it will begin to vibrate to tell me new mail has arrived.
Sorry can't help you with this one mate.
But you’re right, why no notification when your device is in standby.
Seems to me that there is no difference i notification between receiving an SMS or E-mail when you use push e-mail.
Maybe a bug in the test rom?
We will se when there is an official one.
Same issue here. Was never an issue using the old psuedo-push sms system with the old ROM.
Anybody know what the effect of never going into full standby mode would be on the battery? In other words, the screen backlight off but never in standby?

I have never been able to get this to work even when I had ActiveSync set to sync every 5 minutes with the old ROM. It wasn't a problem if you used the old SMS push system because the sms would wake the device up. I was hopeing it was my fault and I was missing a setting but it seems its happening to everyone. Its a pain in the ass.
I did some testing and found out that I can get it to play a sound in standby mode when I have a new email but it won't vibrate. Since my device is only syncing when told too by the server I am going to see if I can get it to vibrate at the end of an activesync and that could possible work.
Setting ActiveSync to vibrate after its finished doesn't work either. Even when the device is on
I was hoping that the "Wake Up to Full Power Mode" tweak in Tweaks2k2 might solve this one, but alas no go. Bummer.

Thanks for trying that. I think MS needs to get this figured out if they want these devices to be BlackBerry killers. Push email is useless if I don't know that I have email the minute it comes in.
this may not help, but it's worth a try......
i put my Wizard (with the new Rom) into a car cradle which is always powered..........therefore the unit is always on.........if the current program on screen is Inbox, then new email coming in does not sound the notification sound.......
if Inbox is running in the background or not at all, then i get the notification sound.......
so........ i tried at home both methods and even when switched off, Inbox needs to be running in the background and not the current program for the sound to notify in an off/standby state
but........ i do get sound notification in standby as long as it is running in the background (ie, when you switch it on, Today screen or Phone or any other app is the 1st thing that greets you)
i regularly get the sound going off through the evening whilst in standby mode....
I know it doesn't solve you problem, but Goodlink got it right.
I will get sound and vib while the unit is in stand-by.
you would thing MS would be able to do the same...
I assume its a glitch that will be fixed soon. Does anyone know where in the registry notifications are kept? I would like to do some searching to see what I can find.
Same problem...
I have the very same problem. Had it before the AKU2 ROM and still have it now. I have taken to using MortSaver and never putting the device in standby...battery doesn't seem affected. Still, rather have this working like it's supposed to out of the box...hope someone can find a solution!

Thanks. I am going to try this -- do you know if the program, which I assume is running in the background all the time, has any impact on device performance?
I have the Cingular 8125 and I love it, but I also have the same problem. I have Goodlink installed and if my device is sleeping it will not vibrate when emails come in. It will make the sound but no vibration. I am currently using Mortsaver for now to keep the device running with the screen off, so that I can feel the vibration and know that I have received an email.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Can anyone verify if this has been fixed in the new Kjam ROM. I don't want to upgrade until this gets fixed. The qtek test ROM is working really well.

I still can't believe that MS has screwed this seemingly fundamental feature up.
In any event, the workaround I am trying at the moment involves the new version of AEPButtons plus. Using this program, I set a double click PIE button action to turn the screen off. In settings, I have unchecked the "Turn Device off after" button so the device never goes to sleep. When I holster or put down my K-jam, I double click the PIE button to turn off the screen and save battery life/prevent accidental key presses. Since the device never truly goes to sleep, the email notifications still come and I get the vibrate telling me an email has arrived. At night or when I don't want notifications, I press the power button. It's not a perfect solution, but it seems to work OK and I don't seem to be missing as many emails coming in.
My Wizard becomes completely silent after 9 hours in standby mode.
I need to reset it to get back sound.
No rings either when someone is calling me.
Does someone know what is going on here ?
Please advise. Thank you.
Did anyone else notice this too on their Wizard ?
Ok the first thing to do is, think to yourself have i put any software on my PDA since this started happening!
Then if so try taking it off and see if that software effects the PDA
I have the same issue. No idea what causes it. I just reset because I'm too lazy to find the solution.
This is a real pain in the neck.
Yes, this is a real problem.
I noticed that many people have this problem, but not many notice it.
They simple use their phone regulary or shut it off in the night,
and so they will not notice it.
I am still looking into it, but I noticed that it happens sometimes not always.
But its a pain in the neck as it needs to be always on.
I also have my GPRS always on for receiving email,
further I use Wisbar and SPB pocket plus.
So in the evening everything is ok, but in the morning I often do not get
any sound (no sound either from incoming calls) and need to reset.
I noticed that this problem happens when for example email is automatically checked during night. If email comes in (and is not read immediately) the phone will start notifying in background.
Notifications are kept and only a program like "check notifications" will delete them manually. But still if you delete them, the phone then needs a reset
to work properly again.
This is not a memory issue, it has to do with the notifications.
I do not know how to solve it.

I have this problem too. It's been driving me mad for ages and I have reached the point were I'm ready to ditch the phone. It can happen within a few hours of a soft reset, causing me to miss most calls! I hadn't added any new software in the period before the problem started.
Your thoughts that it may be due to receiving email message notifications without clearing them seems feasible. I changed jobs around the time I noticed this problem start. I often get lots of emails while I am unable to respond to the notifications so it seems a likely link. Previously, I always responded to mail promptly and I never noticed a problem.
I'm going to look into this idea by first turning off all notifications for email in the "sounds and notifications" tool in Settings. If this doesn't work, I'll try disabling automatic email checking.
I'll report back with my findings
As promised, an update to my earlier post.
It's been about a week since I tried my "tweak" to try and correct the loss of sound when in standby...
IT WORKED!!
Since I've disabled email notifications my phone has worked continuously without a single problem. I'm still automatically checking for new mail every 10 minutes, I just check the "message" item on the today screen every now and then to see if any mails have arrived rather than have the device notify me. Not ideal but better than not knowing when my phone rings!
If you want to try the workaround, go to settings and open "Sounds and notifications" on the personal tab.
Click on the notifications tab and select "Messaging: New e-mail message" from the drop down "Event" box. Uncheck all of the check boxes so that no notifications occur and you should be alright... unless it happends for some other notifications as well!
Good Luck.
Hi guys, please help save my sanity, I use my T-Mobile MDA as my alarm clock in the mornings and have done so since I got it on Ebay about 4 months ago.
The problems started this morning though, when the alarm activated it didn't give me the option to cancel with the left soft key or snooze with the right soft key - it just kept going....and going....and going!!!!! Even after a soft reset.....so I turned it off and removed the battery, refitted the battery and turned it on and the alarm started to go again... and again... and again I managed to stop it after a while but I dont know how because I'd restarted it and soft started it and switched off the alarms so many times I lost track of what I did!
Then this afternoon when I disconnected the MDA from my PC at work it locked out (it does this quite frequently - a different problem but still annoying though) I normally fix this by carrying out a soft reset, which I did....then the bloody alarm thing started all over again EVEN THOUGH THE ALARMS WERE ALL DISABLED, 45 minutes of mucking about again and now it has finally stopped again....please please please can anyone suggest how I fix this cos if I can't the phones going in the bin - I mean the unit is a useful little business tool but its got lots of problems that make it a pain in the as* sometimes. I dont know what software its running or anaything like that cos I'm not sure where to get these details - sorry.
Many many many thanks in advance.

use clear_notify.exe and remove duplicates of "clock" events.
or
check_notifications.exe
Try to use SPB Time http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/time/?en , they did have few bugs with their alrm system, but in this new version they have rectified all the bugs, and it is really working fine, keep it in mind that once u use any other software for alarm then DO NOT use the basic windows alarm. SPB Time has also got a nice ScreenSaver functionality with your own picture support.
GoodLuck

No problem - i have tried a few alarms and they all use the same notification system for setting up an alarm so i do not think one has any benefit from another in terms of reliability (although you will always have diff people swaring by their paricular alarm) but diff ones have extra features - eg. play mp3, wma's etc...
IMHO you can have a reliable alarm by
1. Keeping the notification queue clean - i feel these errors occur when the NQ becomes large/corrupt
2. If it is for a morning alarm - plug your device into the mains and do not let it go into standby - this will give you a reliable alarm.
If you want to look into other alarms see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...highlight=wrap
and here http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/s.php?querywords=alarm
ok so i set my alarm for 7:00am this morning and it just didnt go off...luckily my mum woke me up anyway but still its very unreliable...anyone else had this issue? maybe its linked to my sms message problem? thanks
the alarm on my X1i has been working flawlessly and waking me up every day at the specified time of 7am...i wish mine didn't work so i wouldn't have to wake up that early!
Be sure to have "Let Alarmsignal ring, even if the device is turned on silent or vibrate only" (i dont know what the official text is but im just losely translating from english.
You should find this option with the Clock and Alarmsignal settings under the Tab More.
Also i suggest setting 2 or 3 alarms.. maybe that will help.. ;P
Mine too, some times it simply doesn't go off (specially if more than one alarm are set).
i wake up before it has to anyway but it's still annoying!
and no, that option doesn't help at all, i tried it.
I'm using the free G-Alarm since October last year and it reliably woke me up every morning.
Maybe you want to try it: www.ageye.de

Sorry to say that, but it seems to be your fault then.
G-Alarm works reliable and fine.
Just be sure the alarm is set active and at the right days and the ringtone is available and set to 100% volume.
Also let G-Alarm fix the Windows Mobile Alarm Bug and force to put the sound through the speaker even if the phone's set to silent or vibrate only.
Did you tell it to ring EVERY DAY? I forget this every "first" time on a new phone and the alarm dows not work. It only rings when you tell it to do.
I knew it wasn't just me!
Sometimes it will go off fine
Sometimes it will just vibrate and then do nothing else
Other times it won't go off at all
I can't seem to find a pattern to it, it just seems completely temperamental and is far to unreliable.
As for g-alarm that's far too annoying. It went off while my phone was on silent on a train. Had loads of puzzles and mazes and doesn't stop ringing until you have done them. I pulled out the battery, turned it back on and the alarm went off before the phone had even booted up!
sometimes this problem occurred for me with the custom roms being developed but with the original and the r2a roms I have not had an issue
yep, done all that and i have wm all fine tuned, and as i said, only failed twice over a month or so on a week day configuration with no changes made to it, but enough for me to not fully trust it anymore, be it problem with G Alarm or windows problem...

You can turn those snooze games off , it's just if you want it to really wake you up . Anyway G-Alarm works well for me so far. With the standard I had issuses, even on my older Magician. This one period it only sounded this ding sound repeatadly and refused to play the sound file which of course was in place. Weird stuff, but G-Alarm is awesome, it even allows you to set random MP3s from a playlist you set up. Waking up with a different DnB tune every day
Yes i have a feeling ill have the same issue as Elusivo...no alarm whether it be the standard or g-alarm will be 100% reliable on my X1. Glad i'm not alone but quite annoyed because that is one of my most important things...this along with text messages not always sounding or being displayed until messinging is opened up makes the phone a little difficult to love sometimes.
To me it seems everyone's X1 is slightly different....some have physical issues like cracking etc, whilst others have things that don't work as well as someone elses X1. I find it very strange. I guess these are my issues!

as far as i remember, i also faced this on my SE P910i, also same problem!
i barely sleep, and if the phone only vibrates i wake up, but mostly it doesnt!
i will try GAlarm, let's see.
+1 for G-alarm here.
I tried several different progs before settling with G.
I cannot think of an instance where it has let me down, without it being my own stupid fault.
As said before, you can switch off the mazes and puzzles, and just use it as a standard alarm, with/without snooze.
Best piece of freeware i have got, i think.
Why does WinMo standard alarm suck so badly?
Have MS forgotten to update it all this time?
