simple display on/off question - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hi!
- Does the Universal turn on automatically when the display flip is opened or does the user have to press the Power button first?
- What exactly does the Backlight button do?
I need to know this because I'm investigating a possible wiring damage ...
Thanks!

Depends...
The Universal knows two different states. When you close the display while the device is on, and then open the diplay again the screen will come on.
If however you first press the power button to send the device into standby, and then close and open the display, the screen will not come on, the device will remain in standby.
The backlight button is useless, use the hack to re-assign it to a function of your choice.

Thanks!
That helped a lot!! 8)

Backlight Button Faulty?

Hi,
Since i bought my Universal as the xda exec ive had two problems.
1. The touch screen stopped working keyboard worked fine. This was solved after a rom upgrade.
2. The backlight button does nothing
Isbnt the backlight button suppose to turn backlight of? if so why doesnt mine?
dunno about q1 but as for q2, the backlight key only turns on the backlight whe n the screen times out. Astonishly useless by design! You can remap it to use it like any other hardware button tho (with a bit of registry tinkering). Search this forum for how to.
There are 2 type of backlight:
(1) the screen
(2) the keyboard
the backlight of the screen you can turn on and of via the on/off button at the left side with which you turn on/off the device. For turning on and off the backlight without turning on/off the device you must press and hold the button.
the backlight button at the front is only for the keyboard. But this only works, when you set in the settings, that it should not use the light sensor to regulate the light.
thanks guys, your help is very much appreciated.
I found this a bit strange.
On my Qtek 9000, the backlight button (on device side) does nothing (even if light sensor not used).
The one which does this, is the 'SYM' key on keyboard... :?:
Ok, now I try it out. I was wrong: the light button at the side does absolutely nothing
so for what is that? how can I put a function on it?
lol, this is totaly true, on my o2 exec i thought i try it by disabling the sensor and it didnt do nothing. Whats it for?
Maybe it will have a function in a newer rom?
Hi,
You can change the function of this useless backlight key. You can make it to launch any application you want. Just follow the instructions on the first post of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=34377&highlight=backlight
Enjoy!

screen doesn't turn on by screen tap?

Hi All,
My Wizard is set to turn the screen off after a minute of inactivity.
To get it back on, I have to press the power button.
I've checked in backlight and power settings and have it set to allow a screen tap to turn the backlight on, but it's not working - well, if the backlight's off but the screen's on it works ok, but I want a tap to turn the screen and the backlight on together. At the moment I have to press the power button, which upsets Pocket Player MP3 playback...or I can press a hardware button, but again, this tends to interrupt playback of music as all the buttons are mapped to something.
Seems a simple request, am I missing anything? This is under the Mr Clean ROM, if it makes a difference.

Once the screen goes off, the phone is "sleeping". The only way I know of to turn it on at this point is to tap the power button. To do what you want would be turn turn off the screen going into sleep mode, but that will come at the expense of your battery life. Start>Settings>Power>Advanced then uncheck the Turn off device under On Battery Power.
device lock(s)
A halfway solution, you could turn the screen off using the device lock app, which includes screen off. Then when you press the power button it only effects the screen and not anything which is running. The second one is very good for listening to music with, assuming you volume control button isn't broken like mine

Shut Down Cab?

Downloaded and installed the Shut Down Cab on my Wing. The three options are:
1. Light Off
2. Shut Down (Does not Power Off, only turns off screen?)
3. Soft Reset
My question is: Should Shut Down turn the Power Off? If not, what is the purpose of this compare to Light Off?
Thanks
Press any key if you press Lights off. You'll see that your phone is still on but just with the lights off.
Shutdown is like when you press your power button on the top.
Soft reset, well... speaks for itself.

Thank you. Apparently Shutdown and Lights off do the same thing for me as I can touch any key after using either one and the phone works as if it were Lights off.
Maybe I don't see the purpose of them as being separate functions.
Check "keyboard lock" (more or less.. my wing rom is in spanish) under configuration - system and make sure it's set to "block all buttons except power button" if not, every button will power on your device after shutdown, making it look like turning the lights on.
Hope works for you.

Yes, that is correct. That is why I said that both options are doing the same thing. I would have thought that one would Power Off.
Again, thank you for your input. I do appreciate it.

Soft button to turn the screen off?

I'm new to Topaz. Every time I finish a phone call or a program, I need to wait for several seconds until the screen is turn off. In fact, I do not key lock my phone.
I wonder if there's any soft button (in any kind of program) can turn the screen off after I finish using the PDA phone?
Short press of the (hard) power button turns off the screen (but not the device). That's not satisfactory?
Hi jabok, thank you for yr reply and i noted the "hard" power button method. As the power button is located at the top of the phone and the button is a little bit difficult to press, in my opinion.
That's why I'm looking for a program or shortcut to have a "soft" button on-screen to turn off the screen

Yes, you may try PSSHUTXP or SVMPOWERMGR. I am currently using SVMPOWERMGR which provides 4 shortcuts in Windows Start program and one of them is screen off.

You can use TouchLockPro and configure CommandCallEnded = !SUSPEND.
You can also couple a (hardware) key shortcut to TouchLockAction SUSPEND

Way to make phone Sleep While Charging?

Is there any way way to make the phone sleep while charging without pressing the red button? I have the problem where the phone's touchscreen doesn't like to respond because of the worn out digitizer. So i have to hold the red button down very hard to make it work again. And when i press the red button while the touch screen is working, i have to redo the process. So is there any way to make it sleep while charging without pressing the red button?
Just leave the phone and the screen should time out. If not, you can change it in the settings, probably under 'display' (although it would really help if you mentioned a specific ROM, or even for that matter an OS).
Easy on android & very easy on WM to have an icon linked to a power off exe or a mortscript. on WM you could use uTask to have extra soft button & map long or short press to turn screen off ...
